Book Description
New York magazine calls this award-winning drama about doomed 1920s cave explorer Floyd Collins, "The daring and original musical of our day...a powerhouse!" The vocal score by Adam Guettel and Tina Landau features 30 songs from the production, including: An' She'd Have Blue Eyes * The Ballad of Floyd Collins * The Call * The Carnival * Daybreak * The Dream * Git Comfortable * How Glory Goes * Is That Remarkable? * Lucky * Time to Go * Trapped * and more.
Customer Reviews:
Complete, accurate, vocal score.......2006-05-11
This is the complete vocal score to Adam Guettel's "Floyd Collins." It contains all the vocal lines and underscoring from the show. Also present is a breakdown of the 8 orchestra books for the pit. A list of characters in included, but there is no discussion of their vocal ranges (not that it's all that hard to look through the score and find them for yourself).
Mr. Sperling's keyboard reductions of his own orchestrations are incredibly accurate, if highly un-pianistic. This isn't so much his fault, as it is the nature of the beast. Guitar music just doesn't translate to the piano all that well. Chord symbols would have been nice-and they are included in the guitar appendix (a nice addition to the score)-alas, they are not present in the piano reduction.
All in all a great volume.
Floyd Collins Musical Score.......2005-08-18
This is a fabulous show; a must have for any musical theater group!

Book Description
With a new epilogue revealing additional information about the Floyd Collins story that has come to light since the book was first published!
The sensationalism and hysteria of the rescue attempt in early 1925 generated America's first true media spectacle, making Floyd Collins's story one of the seminal events of the century.
The crowds that gathered outside Sand Cave turned the rescue site into a carnival. Collins's situation was front-page news throughout the country, hourly bulletins interrupted radio programs, and Congress recessed to hear the latest word.
TRAPPED! is both a tense adventure and a brilliant historical recreation of the past.
Customer Reviews:
A STORY THAT WILL CONSUME YOU AND A MAN THAT WILL LEAVE A DEEP IMPRESSION ON YOU.......2007-03-25
After my first trip through one of the sections of Mammoth Cave, I was addicted to this world. My husband turned me on to this man, Floyd Collins, who I have never heard of. We both bought a book from the park store and I couldn't pull myself away from this one. As we drove for hours on our vacation, I would read multiple parts to my husband while he was driving. I couldn't fight the tears as I read so many parts of this book to him. I don't normally get consumed by movies or books, but this book and the story of Floyd Collins has left such an impact on me. It is inevitable the you will find yourself feeling trapped along with Floyd and find a warm level of love and respect for him as his days and conversations are described. I can't even begin to describe feeling as though I was right there beside Homer, Skeets and Johnnie with their dedication to saving this man. I wish there was a movie about this - not a documentary, but a movie. The drama, suspense, characters and events of this story are so realistic and R.K. Murray did a great job on this book.
Definitely a winner.
Trapped: The Story of Floyd Collins.......2002-12-21
When asked about his earliest childhood memory, my late father would tell of his dad carrying him to his uncle's house to listen to radio news reports of the attempted rescue of Floyd Collins from a cave in nearby Kentucky. This book brings to life those events that captured the nation's attention in Jan.-Feb. 1925. Trapped is a well-written, well-documented account of the tragedy that occured in the central Kentucky hills and before watchful eyes of the nation. Its a gripping account that manages to capture the facts of the event, including great details of America's first modern media circus, while still attending to the many colorful characters who played a role in Collin's life, the rescue attempt, and the aftermath.
Trapped: The Story of Floyd Collins.......2002-10-11
The best book I've ever read, period. Within the context of a rescue attempt of a Kentucky caver, the authors paint a revealing picture of America in the 1920's. From the glory seeking Louisville fireman to a journalist who won the nobel prize, this story is not to be missed. Just read the 1st five pages, up to the 1st line break, & you'll be hooked. I've never handed this book to anyone who wasn't totally enthralled w/ it.
Cave Country Tragedy.......2002-07-15
Trapped! the story of Floyd Collins, is a very well written account of one of the first mass media coverages of an American Tragedy. The book itself flows very well and engrosses the reader in the details of the often heroic effort to save Collins who was trapped in a cave near Mammouth Cave in Kentucky. Murray and Brucker do an excellent job in discussing the noted personalities associated with the media frenzy that closely followed the efforts to save Collins. Also dealt with is the exploitation of the entire event by a number of self serving individuals. A great book for those interested in Kentucky History and a noteworthy work for those who prefer casual reading.
A wonderful, well written account........2001-09-29
O.K.- this genre of book is not my usual reading. However- Since seeing the play (musical) and buying the O.B.C. C.D, I had to know more. This fast paced book is highly readable, and contains wonderful but chilling insights into the farce that passed as a rescue attempt as well as many sidelights into the people and events of this tragedy. What had me literally on chair's edge was the author's move by move of his personal trip into the very cave that was to be Collins' first grave. A real nail biter! Buy this book, buy the C.D., and please see the show- you too will be hooked! Good stuff!!

Victoria - The Adventure of Robin Hood.......2005-01-21
The book The Adventure of Robin Hood is a great read. This Traditional Literature was written by Howard Pyle. This book is full of action packed adventure. In this book is about an outlaw named Robin Hood that lives in Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood and his merry band of men are very helpful by stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The sheriff of Nottingham doesn't appreciate Robin Hood's good will. Will they achieve? I think this is a great book because they meet new people, the definitions of Robin is very descriptive. I also think this is a great book is because at one of my family reunion's I saw it at the kid table. I could not put it down. I think this book is great book for people who like action and adventure. This book is for kids and adults of all ages.

Book Description
In February, 1954, under the direction of Joe Lawrence, Jr., the National Speleological Society sent the largest, most highly organized, and best-equipped expedition in the history of American cave exploration into Floyd Collins' Crystal Cave, Kentucky. The Caves Beyond is the official account of that expedition and a classic American caving story. There is no other caving book like it.
First published in 1955 in an edition of 10,000 copies, the book was out of print soon afterwards. Good copies of the rare first edition are a sought after prize to book collectors. This quality reprint reproduces every word and picture of the original edition. Brucker's new introduction to the long-awaited reprint edition reveals a number of "untold stories" about the expedition, including stories of the politics behind the C-3 expedition and of how the book came to be written in an attic in Brooklyn in two weeks' time. There is also a detailed index, which the first edition lacked.
Customer Reviews:
Enlightening and Inspiring.......1999-09-17
I am a college student, and after reading this book I have considered learning to cave. The authors write in away that pulls you into the story. Anyone who even remotely likes caves should read this book.
A classic of caving literature!!!.......1998-06-10
'The Caves Beyond' may be responsible for getting more Americans interested in caving than any other single piece of literature. For a long time it was the only work on caving, a sort of informal bible. The book is both a work in itself and a prequel to its now better known cousin 'The Longest Cave'. Along with 'Trapped', these two books form an informal history of Mammoth Cave, one of the most celebrated caves of all time. The writing style is easy and free, bringing the reader into the events. By the end of the book, you feel as if you've been along with the C-3 Expedition, shared their hopes and dreams and their failures too. 'The Caves Beyond' is a book by cavers for everyone and a great introduction for anyone who has harbored hidden desires to go caving.
I LIVED the book -- or a large part of it anyway........1998-04-12
While stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky. in 1954 I learned of the National Speleological Society intent to explore Floyd Collins Crystal Cave. Having done explorations in Indiana caves as a boy I thought it would be interesting to go to the site in Kentucky where preparations were being made for the exploration. My knowledge of communications was quickly put to use when someone was needed to operate the switchboard. I volunteered to give it a try and was asked by expedition leader Joe Lawrence if I'd like to stay and help out.
Somehow the leaders of the expedition managed to get in contact with my commanding officer and arrange for a special leave from the Army. My wife, Barbara, and I both served on the expedition. It was a difficult time for Barbara since she was soon to become a mother. Our first child, Kathy Lynn, was born just two months after we served on the staff.
The book chronicles not only the small contribution that we made, but the yeoman service and dedication given by the many who were behind the scenes.
One of the reporters who went into the cave spoke to his editor from deep inside the Kentucky hills. That reporter has since made quite a name for himself -- Robert Halmi, Sr. At the time he was doing an article for True Magazine.
Before I left the expedition site to return to Ft. Knox I made sure I joined the National Speleological Society. Although I am now in my late 60's, I still have wonderful memories of the days spent both above and under the ground on this expedition.
The excitement generated by Caves Beyond may tempt younger people to try "caving" or "spelunking" but a caution needs to be made -- Never go caving along!
That is what Floyd Collins did in the 1930's. He became trapped and died in the cave that the book describes.
Difficult photography was carried out on the expedition. Many of the photographs you will find in the book were done by technicians whose hearts went into their work.
Joe Lawrence and Roger Brucker accurately depict the discoverie!s and dangers of one of the most unusual and interesting caves in America.
I am pround to admit that I lived the book -- or a part of it.

Book Description
This is a family story of America's most famous cave explorer who was trapped and died in Sand Cave, Kentucky, in 1925. That story has been told many times but never before has the complete life of Floyd Collins been presented. Floyd's younger brother Homer tells how Floyd was fascinated with caves from his childhood, of his discovery of the famous Crystal Cave on the home property, and of the Sand Cave rescue attempts from the viewpoint of a devoted brother whose extraordinary efforts to save Floyd were rewarded by his being removed from the premises while others inexperienced in working in caves carried on the unsuccessful attempt. It is a warm story of a man whose love in life was exploring caves, a man who endured his grim death with dignity and pride in his vocation.

Soft-Tip Darts for the New Player: A Quiver of 3
ASIN: 1891708236 |
Book Description
"To The Point: The Story of Darts in America" is the first book to detail the history of the sport of darts in the United States. Although its release has been eagerly anticipated in America's large darts shooting community, the book is written and structured in such a way as to appeal to the general interest audience.
The story begins with a description of a darts match in Boston, where 10,000 members of the Minuteman Dart League compete on pub and club teams every Tuesday night in season. In the second chapter the author explores the history and mythology of the sport in Great Britain. From there the reader is taken on an authoritative and entertaining tour of a century of dartsplay in the United States.
The book's sharply drawn characters and lively prose are enhanced with an interesting array of photographs and illustrations. These include a late 19th century photograph of a bowler-hatted darts team and American darts photographs of the 1940's from Time-Life,Inc. and Temple University's Urban Archives. The final photograph in the text is a classic action shot of Stacy Bromberg, ranked number one woman dart shooter in America, at Blueberry Hill in St. Louis in April, 2001.
The research for the book is thorough, even the location of the first dartboard in America is pinpointed (Ridge Street and Nicetown Lane, Philadelphia). The reader is taken along on the author's field expeditions which include a darts-pub crawl in Philadelphia, a trip to the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution and a sojourn in Albany, NY where darts team scores in the newspaper, "Knickerbocker News", in the 1930's, are discovered. The author, ranging across the country in search of clues and provenance of darts in America, finds a richly textured, exciting segment of American culture that has been, until now, if not overlooked, certainly under-reported.
The author traces the evolution of the American-style darts games many Americans grew up playing. Also covered in-depth is the "darts explosion" of British-style darts in the 1970's and the effect of the introduction of viable electronic darts machines in the mid-1980's. The book ends with a report on the "world war" between darts promoters in the 1990's and a look at the future of the sport in America.
"To the Point: The Story of Darts in America" is a fascinating portrait of an American pastime which grew to be more than just a game.
Customer Reviews:
To the Point: It is a history book........2007-04-11
I love the game of darts. When I first started playing I wanted to get as many books on the subject that I could find. My main purspose was to read about how I could become a better player by reading what the experts had to say. This was one of the books that I bought. The book is interesting if you are looking for exactly what the title says, "The Story of Darts in America". If you are looking for more or tips on how to be a better player than find another book. I do still have the book, and I do pick it up from time to time and read a little bit of it. I enjoy it now more than I did when I first bought it. I think it is recommended for someone who loves the sport and is interested in it historically, not for a beginner that wants to learn to play.
Best Dart Book Ever.......2002-07-31
I never knew the history of darts until I read this book. I recommend it to anyone who plays darts, or is just a dart spectator.

Absolutely Love The Show---Absolutely Hate The Book.......2004-03-02
This book would have been much better if it wasn't written to entertain more than to inform. It is written in a style that attempts to make the reader think they are reading police investigation reports about Vic Mackey and crew. This book would have been a hell of lot better if it was written matter-of-factly about the show, actors, and characters, along with the episode guide. Ultimately this book insults the intelligence of anyone who has seen, and is familiar with this exceptional television series. I hope to get at least $5 for this book on Ebay.
May be "Fully Authorized" but not "Fully Loaded".......2004-01-14
Because of awards the show has garnered [Golden Globes], "The Shield" has become a pretty non-mainstream TV show on cable. That's great and I truly applaud the show for its daring risks and good storylines and great characters, but this book isn't what I expected.
I'm a huge Shield fan [ www.theshieldfans.com ] and I was hoping for an exclusive look at how the show is produced, how scripts are written, characters played out, behind-the-scene interviews and more from this "Fully Authorized - Fully Loaded" book. Instead it's only "Fully Authorized" and Half-Loaded...
Coming from FX, I expected something more original and atypical. While there are alot of pictures, they are all black and white and printed on newspaper/recycled-like paper, ie texture isn't great nor white. The book is basically an episode guide with summaries of what happened in each episode, what each character's profile is, and that's it.
You do NOT get any insight on the cast or crew, you do not go behind-the-scenes, you do not have anything new that you do not already know if you have seen the show on TV. If that's what a guide is, then this really does not present anything worth having unless you just like to look at some images from each episode and of the cast that you haven't seen before.
Overall, this book is not helpful unless you have missed several episodes of the show and do not have the DVDs. This is a basic fan-book that gives you "notes" that any basic fan could write up.
Skip this and instead, spend your money on something more worthwhile - the DVDs and other Shield-related merchandise. Check out: theshieldfans.com for more items.

This book will take you from A to Z but seam to be a little outdted because Studio Pro is now 4.0 but anyway, this book is well done. I will gladly share it to my videographer friends.
Took me from "somewhat willing" to "very able" in two days!.......2005-05-19
Thank you Martin Sitter! I am a filmmaker/photographer who needed to move into the realm of making DVDs. You took me from A to Z in an informative, easy to understand way. I really liked how you started at the beginning of what the differences are between DVDs and CDs and especially what countries use what format (all those film festival markets!) Words like MPEG-2 video streams, encoding, and assets roll off my tongue now and it all makes sense!
You have opened up a new world for me and I am grateful!
- Lisa Bevis, Los Angeles, CA
Good, But!.......2005-04-04
Basically a excellent tutorial and reference. But unfortunately falls into the
do-everything cracks by forcing someone who wishes to produce a simple slideshow only to learn all about how to create complex video audio supported programs. Before the user can put together a slide show they will have to learn many functions that have no relation ship to what they ultimately want wind up with.
Good Mix of Theory and Instructions.......2004-11-27
DVD Studio Pro was born as DVDirector, a $5,400 software package from a company named Astarte. Seeing a very good thing, Apple bought Astarte in April of 2000 and turned it into DVD Studio Pro for a price of $1,000. The first release was - well it was a first release. In competition with this software was DVDMaestro, a quite advanced product, but also a quite advanced $25,000.
Apple mixed all this technology together with the golden third release at only $499. All of a sudden professional quality DVD authoring was available to virtually anyone.
This book starts with a discussion on what hardware you need to work with DVD Studio Pro 3. DVD files are huge, often measured in gigabytes. You'll need processing power, memory, and disk space. Starting from this simple view, it continues in a step by step basis through every aspect of producing a DVD. The writing style is clear and concise, with just the right amount of theory mixed in with practical instruction. Considered an intermediate level book, this is not exactly a beginners 'this is how you turn it on' book.
You'll note that this is also a very reasonably priced book.
