Customer Reviews:
Great Beginner Book.......2006-11-09
I originally purchased this when I got my guitar so I would have a quick reference for the notes of the strings as well as tuning and then I bought a DVD to learn basics from. I played around with the DVD and then I played around with this book. As a complete beginner, I love the book! It teaches you the notes and how to read the music and then it has you practice. It is amazing after the drills how quickly you can look at a note and then just know where to place your fingers without even thinking. I have not used the CD yet...I just keep trying the practice sections until I feel it is right...I may use the CD later. This book is so cheap so if you are a complete beginner, I recommend it. Later in the book are some chords and also tablature (I am not there yet). After I finish this book I will move on to the DVD that I bought. Great starting book I think.
affordable way to learn the basics.......2005-07-05
I bought my guitar over a year ago and wanted to learn how to play but couldn't afford to pay for guitar lessons. So I bought this book. It's amazingly clear on what to do and even shows you how to hold your hand for different chords and which finger to use for various notes.
You don't even have to be able to read a note of music to get started with this book: at the very beginning of it, before you actually start playing the guitar, it explains measures, whole notes, half notes, quarter notes (etc.), time signatures, which notes are on which lines and spaces, what a clef is, etc. Eventually (towards the end of the book) it gets into tablature.
It comes with a cd so that you know what sort of a sound you're going for and to make sure that you're doing it right... plus it's fun to have some background music to play along with. Yes it is very sappy in that the book changes the names of songs from "ode to joy" to "ode to joyful rock" and "johnny be good" to "billy b.badd". The book doesn't just throw you into chords right away but instead gradually makes things tougher and slowly introduces you to different techniques.
I highly recommend the FastTrack series to learn the basics and then taking lessons from an instructor.
The Fast Track Is The Right Track.......2005-04-21
There are books that only focus on playing chords. And then there are books that convert notes into that easy to read tablature. But there isn't much sheetmusic or many songbooks written in tablature.
I don't want to count strings and frets for each note. I just want to look at the notes on any sheet of music and know what to play. That's what I do when I play piano and it's what I want to do when I play guitar. This book teaches you how to do just that in addition to reading tablature and chords.
The CD makes practice more fun. Even the simplest exercises sound great with a little backup music. And if you aren't having fun...what's the point? Buy this book and start having some of that fun!
Frustrating and Corny.......2004-07-02
It's hard to get past the corny "humor" and wacky Comic Sans font, but even when I do, the text itself frustrates. There must be a better way to initiate a musical novice into playing an instrument. I've yet to make it past the six notes in the first two chapters. Maybe it works for others, but definitely not for me.
Great beginner's book and CD!.......2004-05-05
This book is helping me learn to read music more fluently, while I am learning to play the guitar. The CD is helpful and encouraging. While simple, the songs provide good exercises that are getting me familiar with the guitar and building "finger memory" as well as strengthening my fingers for tougher stuff. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn the basics.
Good luck!

Best Beginning Bass Book On The Market.......2003-07-26
This book lives up to its title. The combo of the CD and written material (tab + instruction) is excellent. The book has both tab and sheet music to learn from and you get to play along with the CD. This really enforces the concepts of time (rythum) and harmonics (chords, scales, etc.). Many different styles and tempos really help accelerate your learning process. For me timing was a very tough concept to grasp and playing along and viewing the various tempos and riffs in the book has brought me a long way toward being a respectable bassist. I still jam with friends who can play lead, rythum and drums and that just reinforces the concepts.
One thing I have to mention to be fair in the review is that I have bought a lot of the available "Learning" Books, DVD's, etc. that are on the market. This one is by far the best at teaching the conceptual and physical (real world) playing concepts. If you really want to play bass and want to learn quickly I highly recommend this book.
Another note - read some theory. At least enough to know the notes on the neck of the bass and how to find them. A little scale and chord construction will help you out a lot. Oh- and read up on timing and rythum as it applies to the bass. With this background and a concerted effort to play the material in this book you will progress quickly.
Guitarnoise.com has some great Bass Sections on timing and theory as well as cyberfretbass.com. They're both free and will help accompany the concepts and playing material in the book.
In short - for the money this is the best da#! beginning bass book on the market.
BEGINNER.......2003-01-07
THIS IS A GOOD BOOK FOR BEGINNERS. THE CD MAKES IT VERY EASY TO GET A RYTHM, IM NOT REALLY INTO THE ROCK MUSIC. BUT IT HAS SOME NICE BLUES TRACKS ON THERE AS WELL. THE LAST LESSONS ALLOW YOU TO PLAY WITH OTHER INSTRUMENTS SO YOU ARE THE ONLY BASS THAT YOU HEAR. AND IF YOU ARE STARTING A BAND THERE ARE ALSO 3 OTHER BOOKS THAT GO ALONG WITH YOURS, AT THE END OF THE LESSONS THERE ARE 3 SONGS. EACH INSTRUMENT WILL LOOK AT THERE OWN BOOK, AT THE SAME SONG AND PLAY TOGETHER, YOUR OWN BAND. (BASS,KEYBOARD,DRUMS,GUITAR)
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Very good.......2002-01-27
This book helped me to learn the basics of bass very quickly. It has tabs as well as regular notation for each song. There is a CD which is very helpful. I made it through this book very quickly and look forward to moving on to the next book.
EXCELLENT choice for a beginner.

If you want to learn guitar on your own, get this book!.......2000-12-31
This book is great if you are just starting out on guitar. It is useful if you want to be self-taught as well as to give you extra practice if you are taking formal lessons. This is the only book I've found that can really teach you how to play. It goes from the basics and works up slowly. If you buy this one first, you'll save yourself alot of money and trouble.

Book Description
Americans are often accused of not appreciating history, but this charge belies the real popular interest in the past. Historical reenactments draw thousands of spectators; popular histories fill the bestseller lists; PBS, A&E and The History Channel air a dizzying array of documentaries and historical dramas; and Hollywood war movies become blockbusters.
Though historians worry that these popular representations sacrifice authenticity for broad appeal, Michael C.C. Adams argues that living historyeven if it is an incomplete depiction of the pastplays a vital role in stimulating the historical imagination. In Echoes of War, he examines how one of the most popular fields of history is portrayed, embraced, and shaped by mainstream culture.
Adams argues that symbols of war are of intrinsic military significance and help people to articulate ideas and values. We still return to the knight as a symbol of noble striving; the bowman appeals as a rebel against unjust privilege. Though Custer may not have been the Army's most accomplished fighter, he achieved the status of cultural icon. The public memory of the redcoated British regular soldier shaped American attitudes toward governments and gun laws. The 1863 attack on Fort Wagner by the black Fifty-fourth Massachusetts regiment was lost to public view until racial equality became important in the late twentieth century.
Echoes of War is a unique look at how a thousand years of military history are remembered in popular culture, through images ranging from the medieval knight to the horror of U.S. involvement in the My Lai massacre.

Couching The Sopranos.......2007-08-28
Was very skeptic of this publication from the title name. Once I skimmed over the content inside, I KNEW I wanted it.
Inside you will be exposed to the reasoning for actions of the characters. It offers insight to their motivations and their way of thinking.
Very entertaining for those who want exposure that goes beyond the surface of the action you see in the series.
They're not really on the couch.......2003-02-19
Right off the bat, I realized that I would never get what I expected with this book -- a psychoanalytic assessment of the characters of TV's "The Sopranos." Rather, what you have is a light weight paperback with overviews of the episodes containing some interesting insight into character development and dialogue, but never really getting into the characters' heads. Perhaps we need Dr. Melfi to invite the other "family" members onto her couch and ask _her_ to write a book!
One of the few redeeming qualities of this book is Yacowar's comparison of the Sopranos series to Francis Ford Coppola's The
Godfather films, but you have to skip to the back of the book for this.
If you were hoping to really see each of the characters on the couch, you will be disappointed. If you are just a huge fan who wants to reflect on one of the greatest television shows ever created in a 1 hour read, then I would commend this book.
Book Description
There's no better way to learn to author professional, interactive DVDs than this self-paced, Apple-certified guide to DVD Studio Pro 3. This revision of the best-selling first edition is fully updated to take advantage of the software's new transition styles, superb HD-to-MPEG-2 encoding, and brand-new graphical view. Master trainers

You'll also learn sophisticated techniques for juggling multiple audio tracks and camera angles, creating smart buttons and custom transitions, and scripting. Finally, you'll encode professional-quality audio and video and build, format, and burn the DVD. By the end of the book, you'll have created four full DVDs, each geared to a different audience and using different navigation schemes and effects.

The best instruction on using DVD Studio Pro 3.......2006-10-24
This is by far the best instruction manual on using a software product that I have seen. It walks you step by step through DVD studio Pro's feature while you are creating a sample dvd. It teaches you in simple steps so you understand immediately what is being done. This is great for the inexperienced and experienced users of authoring a dvd.
Excellent book, but not flawless.......2005-01-22
First of all its actually 4.9 stars out of 5, but since the book is not flawless it cannot get 5 stars.
Apple Pro Training Series -- DVD Studio Pro 3 (with a DVD attached to the inside back cover) is a great book for the novice DVD Studio Pro 3 learner. (I am referring to ISBN 0-321-25610-7 Copyright 2005 by all4DVD and Martin Sitter)
The Book
There is no doubt, that you will learn a lot from this book, and if you are a novice in this area, do not waste your time looking any further: This is the book you want and need. I am a novice myself and therefore cannot say how helpful it may be to the Pro.
The entire book is in color (with the usual "Apple Blue" for certain text parts) and full color graphics (compared to the same-series Final Cut Pro HD book, where all graphics are in b/w)
The DVD contains:
My_Projects (that folder is empty, so you can save your lesson file here) 0MB
Media (contains all the files you need for your lessons) 3.45GB
Lessons (contains start- and finish lessons) 32.8MB
Appendix A (contains a PDF with a lesson: "Creating a Motion Menu in Final Cut Pro" which is not covered in the book) 4.6MB
There are some flaws, which may or may not make you angry while going through the book and by the book. Some drove me nuts, while others made me smile. You decide for yourself.
The Flaws (after reading the first 225 pages (total: a little over 720 pages)):
Page 31, Step 15, 2nd Paragraph
"As you select each button, it should turn red." Well, it does not turn red. Apple must have changed the appearance. But do not worry, it is working anyway.
[angry]
Page 45, Keyboard Shortcuts
Cmd-P Burn (It should read: Cmd-Shift-F Burn)
The Cmd-P (Command-key, also known as the Apple-key, plus the P-key) is usually opening the Print-Dialogue Window.
[angry]
Page 80, Step 1, 1st Paragraph
" . . . double-clicking the DVD Studio Pro icon in your Dock . . . "
A single click is enough for the Dock.
[smile]
Page 104, Step 1, 2nd Paragraph
Cmd-Option-O should read Cmd-Option-0 (Cmd-Option-zero)
[smile]
Page 194, Step 13, 2nd Paragraph
""Main Menu" should appear . . . "
That's correct: "should", but it does not, since it is not mentioned, that you will have to switch back to English Subtitle first in order to make this work.
[very angry, took me quite a while to figure this out]
And the next step after "Step 13" should be "Step 14" and not again "Step 13".
So and now I can't wait to continue with my lesson.
Good luck to you in becoming a pro -- this book will help you a lot.
One final advice for overseas orders: I ordered this book via Amazon.com to be shipped to Tokyo/Japan via "via DHL Express (averages 2-4 days)". It actually took 8 days to arrive. You may not waste your money on DHL's Express [loughing out load] Service.
In tutorial form, You'll burn four movies........2004-11-20
Apple And Macintosh Graphics And Sound, Computer Animation, This is the official Apple Pro training course for DVD Studio Pro 3, so it's clear that this is the book you need to get. The nice thing about is that it's also very well written. If you have the earlier versions of this guide, you'll know what I mean.
The approach used in the book is to go produce DVD's. In fact after just a few pages of introductory this is what we're going to do stuff, you get started making a DVD. The first DVD is planned to take about one hour to make, it includes getting started with learning your way around the Studio Pro authoring window, making a title page and a simple menu. At the end of the hour you should have a burned DVD ready to play.
Having hit the ground running, from here the projects get more and more complex, and in each DVD you have to repeat some of the steps of the earlier one, this kind of repetition makes it familiar. By the end of the fourth project you've used basically all of DVD Studio Pro.
The format of this book is a directed hands-on tutorial. It's neither a cram for the test nor a general reference manual. But after working through the course material in this book, you can become a certified Apple Pro by taking the certification exam. You will have been exposed to and practiced everything you need to know.
Excellent Resource.......2004-10-01
I've used DVD Studio Pro since version 1 and when our company upgraded from version 2 to 3 I decided to buy this book to see how to utilize the new features in my DVD productions. Not only was I happy to find easy to read instructions and tutorials on the new features of DVD Studio Pro 3 (all in color), but this book has taught me some new tricks for some of the older features as well. One chapter that caught me off guard that was a pleasant addition was a detailed account on how to create you own custom presets for Compressor, including a great description on how MPEG-2 compression works (excellent for beginners and advanced). I'd recommend this book for anyone using DVD Studio Pro 3, even if your an advanced user this makes a great resource for your desk.
