4 out of 5 stars Where's "Nessun Dorma"?.......1999-02-25

Copyrighted in 1996, you'd think that Bleiler ran into copyright problems with the world's most popular aria of the 90's. Turandot isn't mentioned at all. There are, however, Italian arias and English translations from 49 other opera.

My Italian's not that good, but it appears to me that the translations are faithful to the Italian text, rather than having a focus on poetic interpretations. This is what you need if you simply want to know what those beautiful Italian words mean. There are no plot synopses (nor did they promise any). It's short and sweet and well worth the price.

                    1 out of 5 stars A fascinating subject receives a debilitating treatment.......2005-05-01

Simply put, Mr. Smith's writing gets in the way of the subject about which he writes. This is a great 400-page book. Unfortunately, it's 623 pages long. Mr. Smith never takes one word if he can say it in ten. Were he one of the broadcasters about whom he writes, he would be described as "being in love with the sound of his own voice."

And it's such a shame, because this is a worthwhile topic. I climbed into the book hoping for a great deal, but what I got was a great deal less than that. Wordiness killed this book.

Smith might say that "One man's wordiness is another man's poetry," but I would say the man for whom wordiness is "poetry" is not yet fit to write.

                    5 out of 5 stars A classic........1999-09-06

Simply put, this is THE definitive history of baseball announcing, with biographies of the individual broadcasters themselves interspersed with more big-picture observations concerning baseball and broadcasting in general. The book was clearly a labor of love for its author, a fact which should make his occasional forays into self-indulgence forgivable. Smith has a decided bias toward the late '50s and early '60s, the era of his own childhood; as the reviewer from Ohio noted, he makes too many critical comparisons between the different "Voices" (although THIS reviewer misses Harry Caray tremendously and considers Jon Miller one of the all-time greats); and he peppers the text with comments derived from his conservative political leanings. Nonetheless, the anecdotes are fascinating and the sheer scope of the work is most impressive. All that's needed now is a third edition to touch on the entry of Fox into the network landscape and other developments of the last decade.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview Of A Fascinating Topic.......1998-11-23

Curt Smith's history of baseball broadcasting on both radio and television from 1921 to 1991 is a must-have for any baseball library and a fun overview of an oft-neglected topic. Many wonderful insights are revealed for the first time about local and network broadcasters, their comings and goings and their impact on the game itself. About the only drawback of this book and which keeps it from five stars is Smith's annoying habit of digressing into his personal opinions about various broadcasters, past and present. While this isn't too intrusive for announcers he praises, I for one was offended by his rude treatment of an announcer I grew up with as a Yankees fan in the late 1970s and who was my "Voice Of Summer" as surely as Mel Allen was to an earlier generation, in my case Frank Messer of the wonderful Yankees broadcast team of Phil Rizzuto, Messer and Bill White. Ditto his obnoxious diss at Gary Thorne of the New York Mets and ESPN who only happens to be one of the top all-around play-by-play men in the business today. Such comments are better suited to a media critic in the newspapers and not to a historical overview and in my opinion keep the book from being a flawless gem.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Source.......1998-10-27

Curt Smith's history of baseball broadcasting, from the early days of radio in the 1920s to the present is a must read for those who have always been fascinated by the men who have broadcast the games over the years and want to know just why baseball has sadly declined in importance on the networks over the decades. It is shocking to see how in the 1950s, there were more than 100 regular season baseball games each year on all three networks, while today we barely see a quarter of that amount.

The only thing wrong with Smith's book that keeps it from five stars are his annoying digressions into his personal opinions of certain broadcasters. As a Yankee fan who grew up in the late 1970s, I particularly take offense to his rude dismissal of Frank Messer, who broadcast more Yankee games than anyone other than Mel Allen or Phil Rizzuto as well as his total glossing over of Bill White, also a Yankee broadcaster at the time and the first black to broadcast regularly for a team. Jon Miller and Harry Caray, two announcers I dislike are overhyped as though they were gods while Gary Thorne, a solid professional for more than a decade on ESPN and the New York Mets is also treated rudely. Smith would have been well-advised to stick to the history and keep his opinions on announcers he doesn't care for to himself.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, informative and fun.......1998-02-03

Curt Smith is one of the most eloquent writers around today. This chronicle of the great voices who have brought the game of baseball into our homes is an absolute treasure. From Graham McNamee to Ty Tyson up to Mel Allen and Jack Buck, all of the great baseball voices are brought back to life. Curt Smith does a masterful job bringing to life these men who had the rare talent of entertaining us with descriptions of a baseball game.

                    1 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Bad!.......2006-11-02

I think Wienberg must be spamming these reviews with a multitude of user names. That is the only explanation that can explain the four star average rating for this steaming pile of refuse. This is a book from an era when there must have been very low standards for 'popular' technical books. Weinberg is no psychologist, his observations are amateurish and ill informed. This book reads more like a 'best practices' work for the mainframe era. The most telling thing I can relate is my experience; after finishing a chapter I would read the chapter summary and not recognize a single thing from the chapter I had just read. The most laughable part was the coverage of programming languages. Wienberg is so completely ignorant of programming language research, even for that era, it's stunning. AND the man had (has) the gall to write on the subject as if he knows something. The most distasteful part of the book are the Anniversary Edition comments. They basically consist of Weinberg telling us that, he may not have been completely correct, but wasn't he amazingly prescient for the times? Gag. I'll never read another book by this author.

If you're a developer (referred here as a "programmer") and something's not going just right in your work or group, try reading this book to see if the situations are somehow familiar. The stories about non-technical factors that affect code quality and developer's quality of life are the originals from 25 years ago, with a few-page update at the end of each chapter. While there aren't punch cards and batch jobs anymore, the situations still occur. Try to find your parallels in modern-day software development, where the tools may be new but the people are very much the same. (Do your best to ignore the chauvinistic comments here and there left over from a male programmer of 1971, for which the author now apologizes.) Interesting thoughts at the end about how language and compiler design also affects ease of writing good code.

3 out of 5 stars Retrospective on Pioneering Days.......2005-02-15

The purpose of this book is to study computer programming as a human activity, or its psychology. This was written in 1971, just after the pioneering days of programming had ended, when colleges began to issue degrees in computer programming. Its like a fossil of an extinct species. The ability to do programming well is a talent that not all have (p.3). Like other talents, it can be well-paid. But these costs are targeted by computer management. Weinberg believes programmers can learn by reading programs. How many managers would allow this?

The story on page 18 shows that simple logic is not only easier to code, but avoids the bugs that come from complexity. [I suspect the original programmers started with little planning or design.] Page 34 points out that OS/360 JCL isn't hard to use, its hard to learn. Using keywords may be easier, but its more verbose than positional parameters (another trade-off). The paragraph on 'egoless programming' may not be usable in areas with changing personnel, a management that plays favorites or encourages dissent (divide et impera). The point of "clear and understandable" (p.59) implicitly criticizes subtle and sneaky code, but doesn't address job security. [There is no mention of on-line debuggers that will execute a program statement by statement.

Having a referee to look over programming is more important during initial construction than later maintenance. The discussion of "raw trainees" overlooks other areas, like the military or a factory assembly line. There is a certain amount of time needed for training, depending on the complexity of the task. Nothing can change that (p.69). Since programming is done by humans, it will always have 'human error' (p.72). Page 74 proves the need for program review by a referee, and for a ban against modifying executable code (non-reentrant). Technical arguments are often a mask for political power, and its rewards (p.78). The story on page 88 doesn't tell who pulled the plug! Chapter 5 concludes with the problems in 'herding cats' (p.91). The story about a dissatisfied programmer doesn't consider the idea that the manager may have felt threatened and acted accordingly (pp.97-98).

Doesn't Weinberg realize that his democratic team sounds like socialism? Has anyone anywhere tested the "simple maxim" on page 100? Page 104 explains the hidden agenda of polling: say something enough times and people will believe it. Weinberg should know that the adversarial relationship between testers and programmers is needed to prevent any problems from being overlooked (p.108). The "success of the Austrian Army" (p.108)? The story on page 110 doesn't ring true; aren't project managers downgraded if they're "too technical" (loss of objectivity)? Page 137 reminds me of those days when a bug could be due to hardware error.

The story on page 157 overlooks the fact that a big expensive project could be canceled if the obvious question was raised. The comment on labels is very true, but doesn't mention typing errors as another source of bugs (p.163). Weinberg's comment that re-writing a program is far easier than the first writing (p.165) explains the 'success' of the Structured Programming Fad in the late 1970s: "write a program in one day instead of a week". Wasn't the article on palindromic programming a hoax (p.174)? The pages on Linearity (pp.231-232) are very informative, but don't mention the effect of punched cards on the use of GO TO statements (adding new coding to the back of the deck). The problem of format errors can be handled by a one-page memo for each programmer (p.236). Are Weinberg's comments on COBOL (p.240) valid afterwards for COBOL II? The bug (typing error) on page 249 could be caught by a code reviewer. The story about "hasty punching" (p.260) does not mention the need for teaching programmers how to type for efficiency and productivity. CRT terminals give instant feedback. Batch allows code reviews, on-line gets faster results (p.261).

The topic of 'Documentation' doesn't distinguish between that written for the user of a program, and that written for program maintenance. A well-documented program should have comments where needed; the programmer is usually NOT the one to decide where it is needed (code review). Another method is to have the original programmer responsible for all future maintenance. Note how "documentation" is not defined here (p.262). As I remember it, the author left his University job after this book was published. What did that suggest?

3 out of 5 stars Good info on collaborations, but short on details and dated.......2003-12-22

This book has a wealth of information on how programmers work when in groups, and is a useful read for both managers and individual contributors alike. Many of the fuzzier, less-quantifiable people issues that affect programmers are covered well.

However, it really suffers in three ways:
                    - All of the examples and technology details are dated to the point of distraction.
                    - The typography appears to be photocopies of the original text, and really looks terrible. Couldn't they have reset it?

                    - Not a lot of concrete advice.

4 out of 5 stars How to understand your friend the programmer.......2002-12-17

Recently I was working with a group of professors who were rethinking the programming curriculum for Japanese computer science students. They knew what they wanted their students to learn, but they struggled in knowing just how to accomplish the skill instruction. I understood their problem, but only minimally. They should have recommended Weinberg's book because it really captures the tensions that are played out for teachers, students involved with programming, and it would have helped me make more informed colleague. As one interested in education and designing learning environments, I learned a whole lot about the complexity of studying/developing programming and programmers, and Weinberg increased my empathy for my computer science colleagues and their students. This book gives a view from a experienced programmer and instructor and depicts the challenges that programmers face. Chapter 12 on the principles for programming language design would have been helpful for our group; and this book covers many other related areas like group work, the variation of challenges, problem solving, instruction and more. Weinberg's great contribution however, is to highlight how the human factors such as personality and intelligence influence how programmers go about their tasks. I was turned on to this book through Gause and Weinberg's other book, "Are you lights on!" Both books are highly recommended. I have come to understand my programming friends a whole lot more because of reading this book, and am able to be more sensitive to my colleagues and engineering students are struggling with master this skill. When programming instructors, friends or students have bad days writing code, or keeping their sanity, I can suspend judgment, knowing a bit more of the problems he/she is working with. I recommend it for these reasons.
