Good Subject--Not Easy Reading.......2007-06-20
While it is interesting to read about the roots of country rock, this book leaves a bit to be desired in regards to "structure". The chapters are a bit rambling at times. The publisher would have been advised to insert some page breaks in between subjects.
Ehhh..........2006-11-24
Since I own tons of records by this work's focal artists, I figured I'd get this book. Not the best move, for a bunch of reasons. First off, as one writer referred to, it totally lacks organization. The chapters jump all over the place, making it hard to keep things in mind. Second, why should a work that deals with such lyrical and evocative music be written like a college term paper? Excuse me, Mr. Einarson, you're not proving a thesis, don't be afraid to inject some imagery! The BEST books about musical artists from this period (see Bud Scoppa's Byrds biography NOT Johnny Rogan's, and the wonderful "CSN") are better organized, more pictoral, and livelier! Man, if the times were as dry as Einarson's writing, this genre would never have come about!!!!!
And how anyone could knock the Byrds' "Untitled" album is beyond me....
Always enjoy reading's from "down south"... of Bakersfield ! .......2006-07-28

Roots of Country Rock.......2005-08-09
I strongly recomend this boook, especially for fams of the Byrds, Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Graham Parsons, or the Flying Burrito Brothers.
Not the best.......2005-03-23
I guess I'm the lone detractor, but this book simply is not as good as it should have been, certainly not for anyone not already closely acquainted with the topic. Major problems: although Einarson sensibly avoids cramming every sentence with dates, he goes to the other extreme and includes so few that it's difficult to keep track of persons, events and band membership. Also, the book lack a chronology/time line; anyone not knowledgeable with the musicians involved will have a tough time remembering how and when a Byrd became a Burrito. Finally, the book has no index, which is just inexcusable. And some less serious problems: although most folks wouldn't call CSN/CSN&Y country rock, all members (except perhaps Graham Nash) certainly played country-influenced rock at some time. But you'd never know that from Desperados; aside from a couple of passing references, there is no discussion of them (while many pages are devoted to Ian and Sylvia/Great Speckled Bird, hailed as significant purveyors of country rock, although their efforts in that arena had virtually no influence in the U.S.) Finally, a good proofreader would have found minor typos such as the insertion of commas in the title of Steve Young's Rock Salt & Nails.
There are lots of interesting facts and comments in the book, but the lack of organization makes this a frustrating read.

Roadside Thrills!.......2007-09-09
This book is a dense and stunning compilation of all things "roadside" (interesting buildings, restaurants, fiberglass giants, old amusement parks, eccentric constructions, etc.). The research is thorough and up-to-date, the photos fantastic, and the subject matter comprehensive. It's a must-have for anyone looking to add interesting sights to their travels and for folks interested in Americana.
Gotta Love that "Pink" Motel with the Fairy.......2007-08-18
There is so much going on in this book; it is busy and fun, and informative, and a hoot! It is real trip down Memory Lane. Cover is lively and enticing, print quality is nice, as is page size. It is clear the authors enjoy their work. Colors are crispy cool! I plan to buy several for Christmas gifts. If you took road trips when you were young, you're going to really enjoy being reminded of the quirky places along the way. If you never experienced road trips in the middle of last century, then read it anyway and find out what you missed, and what your parents and grandparents are talking about when they say they "took a trip". I'm the cute little girl in the convertible on page 69.

A real showpiece!.......2000-02-21
What a great book! The title "Route 66 Souvenirs" says it all. Everytime I hit Route 66, I end up buying a ton of souvenirs. I actually constructed the models in the book, and placed a bunch of them in a curio cabinet, along with several real-life souvenirs that I had bought along Route 66. Doing this was incredibly great "therapy" til I can get back on the old Mother Road again!

Alan Rose's new book is art in itself. Somehow, the author has enhanced the innovative precision of his past paper-building books with a humorous perspective and the sense that -- like Buzz and Todd -- one's along on a colorful Route 66 adventure with an old pal. Got two copies: one for the buildings and one for the book.

Book Description
For decades educators and cultural critics have deplored the corrosive effects of electronic media on the national consciousness. The average American reads less often, writes less well. And, numbed by the frenetic image-bombardment of music videos, commercials and sound bites, we may also, it is argued, think less profoundly. But wait. Is it just possible that some good might arise from the ashes of the printed word? Most emphatically yes, argues Mitchell Stephens, who asserts that the moving image is likely to make our thoughts not more feeble but more robust. Through a fascinating overview of previous communications revolutions, Stephens demonstrates that the charges that have been leveled against television have been faced by most new media, including writing and print. Centuries elapsed before most of these new forms of communication would be used to produce works of art and intellect of sufficient stature to overcome this inevitable mistrust and nostalgia. Using examples taken from the history of photography and film, as well as MTV, experimental films, and Pepsi commercials, the author considers the kinds of work that might unleash, in time, the full power of moving images. And he argues that these works--an emerging computer-edited and -distributed "new video"--have the potential to inspire transformations in thought on a level with those inspired by the products of writing and print. Stephens sees in video's complexities, simultaneities, and juxtapositions, new ways of understanding and perhaps even surmounting the tumult and confusions of contemporary life. Sure to spark lively--even heated--debate, The Rise of the Image, the Fall of the Word belongs in the library of millennium-watchers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Future Thinking.......2003-01-02
Although Stephen's writing style may make it difficult for the scholar to take him seriously (he sounds more like an Info-Age
geek than a academic), he presents some extrordinary ideas that shouldn't be ignored or overlooked. For example, his list of the new elements and principles of design spawned by Info-Age art
forms is revolutionary. A must read for the Info-Age artist,
art critic, social-critic, or art educator!
Insightful look into future of communication.......2001-12-20
I teach a graduate design class, and this book is a great way to let students think about their role in the fast changing world of visual communications. Stephens has a great way of putting things in perspective, and notes that each fundamental change in communication has met with resistance, i.e. we still think of TV as the Boob Tube. When I read it a few years ago, it seemed so new--it's fun to see how his theories are quickly melding into our culture seamlessly. It's been an optional read for my students--now it's time to make it mandatory!
Powerful insight.......2001-05-20
I read Stephen's last summer and I'm now rereading parts of it in preparation for using video in my classroom next Fall. There's no doubt what Stephen says is true. The role of the image can often be even more powerful than the word. For example, Henry Hampton's documentary, Eyes on the Prize, conveys much more emotionally and intellectually than any book on the Civil Rights Movement. Even the most prolific readers out there are moved by powerful motion pictures and documentaries. So far me Stephen's work is only a start in terms of examining what we can be done with visual communication, especially the video.
Interesting, but left wanting more.......2000-10-30
His take that nobody has really fully taken advantage of "the language" of video because it is still in its infancy was very interesting and supported pretty well in the book. However, I felt there has to be more to developing video than the fast cuts of Pellington who he so often refers to. Also, I felt he undervalued the contribution new media will have, choosing to encapsulate aspects of interactivity and other digital technologies under the umbrella term of "video." It seems if video is going to fulfill a new function in terms of its ability to change how we get information and even think, it will do so within the framework of digital media, in which video, still images and words can each co-exist seamlessly and utilize their particular strengths.
His ideas are intriguing and challenging and his clear writing style makes the book a very good read. Even with what I felt were the weaknesses mentioned above, his challenge to video to rise above what it is now is needed and will hopefully encourage even more people to experiment with what video can do.
Ahead of his time.......2000-03-15
With TV viewing increasing, it is no wonder more people depend on television than books or newspapers. Mr. Stephens states that the image has not conquered the word yet, it may not happen at all, but he fears it will. Eloquently written and researched, with an excellent chapter 'thinking "above the stream"' that includes director Mark Pellington (Arlington Road). This book is especially useful for journalism students.

Perfectly Useless.......2005-09-14
This book deals with older Palm Operating Systems; so old in fact, that my year-old T5 was way beyond it. It has a copyright from about 2000. If this was in a real bookstore, I owuld have been able to see this fact and avoid this out-of-date product.
Perhaps my worse Amazon experiece to date.
A Good Basic Beginner's Book.......2000-04-14
Being a new Palm IIIxe owner, I was pretty excited about getting another user's manual that would help simplify and reveal the full potential of my PDA. This book makes finding the information relatively easy and it has a good reference section that directs you to third party software downloads. If you're looking for a good starter book that simplifies basic tasks without having to search endlessly with the user's manual that comes with the PDA, then this book is for you. Don't expect too much advanced information to be provided. The descriptions are easy to follow and having the spiral binding makes laying the book flat for reading a nice feature. A good book to have when spare time allows you to just sit back with your Palm and learn basic operations.
Recommended for all Palm users!.......1999-06-03
This book has everything I need to use my Palm and maximize its potential. It's easy to find any command or procedure within seconds. It's great for beginners and advanced users alike.

Excellent for the new computer user.......2000-04-22
These books are written in a very easy to read and understand format; if it uses some unfamiliar computer term, it defines it. It is also written in a nice and simple step by step order to bring your understanding of computers/Windows 98 up gradually not to mention its humorous slant. I build computers for my friends and family and I always send these books along with the new computers becuase I think they are the easiest to understand.
