4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2007-03-25

This book gives you what you need, succinctly--it might add a few more progressions and the reasons behind them but it gives you all the basic knowledge clearly.

5 out of 5 stars 'Oh, Give Me A Home Where Progressions Roam'.......2003-05-31

A 'Guiding Light' to Progressions. This book takes you from basic chord construction to advanced chord structures and progressions with simple illustrations and clearly defined instructions. I highly recommend this book to keyboardists who needs to quickly expand their C&P repertoire. Add this book to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Chord Progression.......2000-03-01

In this book, Kenneth shows you different kinds of chord progression, mostly leading to the Tonic ( I chord ). He explains the use of all kinds of chords, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, etc. and how these can be applied in your chord progressions. Examples are given and there are just tons of information on how to add 'color' to your progressions. An excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Piano Chords..........2006-12-21

Much material in the book to be learned...this stuff will definitely keep you off the streets at night!

If you master the material in this book, you just may have the skills to earn a part-time (or maybe full-time) living playing jazz.

Hey! That would put you back in the streets performing gigs - all night! Hmmmmm....that could be fun!! Five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-03-23

This book is a good resource for jazz players. I thought it would have the fingerings for the chords (for beginners). But if you can read treble and bass clefs its great!!!! It has just about every possibility you can imagine!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Such a vauable resource! .......2005-09-03

This book is a great, valuable resource. As an aspiring musician, I would often find it frustrating to find the right chord to harmonize the melody note I picked. This book has an entire section on chords that will harmonize each melody note, so it is as simple is picking out the chord from whatever progression you want to use! Eperienced musicians will find this helpful and valuable . . . beginning musicans NEED it! Great investment, you won't regret purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide!.......2003-11-24

"Jazz Piano Chords" is a well-thought-out and equally well-layed-out book for the beginning as well as the more experienced jazz pianist. There are many chord dictionaries on the market, but this one is specifically designed for jazz pianists, and it goes into detail about how chords are structured and when to use and not use specific types of chords. Preceding the chord charts are about twenty-five pages of text with explanations of the basics of what intervals and chords are and how they function in different musical settings (solo piano, as an accompanist, in a combo, etc.). The text then moves into voicings and a thorough exploration of the various kinds of chords with many charts to illustrate how these chords are built and used. Next follow the chord charts for all keys, charts of chords used for harmonizing in all keys, and charts of quartal harmonies in all keys. The final chart is spelling suggestions for the various chords. An award-winning jazz pianist as well as a composer of many different styles of music, Misha Stefanuk shares a wealth of knowledge in a concise and very readable fashion. An easy-to-use reference book as well as an excellent textbook, it is recommended for any pianist who wants to learn how to play jazz and to understand the fundamental structure of jazz piano.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Piano Reference.......2002-12-08

Jazz Piano Chords by Misha V. Stefanuk is a great sourcebook for both beginning and experienced jazz pianists. Stefanuk simply explains the music theory of intervals, chords, voicing, harmonizing chords, substitutions and enharmonic spellings which lays the foundation for understanding the complexity of the sound and chord structures on the piano. He finishes the book up by spelling out every jazz chord that you would ever need in all keys.
All in all, a terrific compilation for any pianist interested in jazz!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VISUAL BIOGRAPHY OF THE MAN.......2001-04-03

This documentary about one of the greatest ballad singer of his time has all a documentary should have including clips of his widow that tells a lot about what kind of man he really was;revealing television appearances in different shows including his own that was sadly put off by the sponsors after a few years;FRANK SINATRA,ELLA FITZGERALD and HARRY BELLAFONTE also add their opinions. The most important thing here is that new generations can get to know why NATHALIE COLE's father was so much loved in his lifetime. The stories of his attack by white men is shameful and so is the one about their residence in CALIFORNIA,but unfortunally they also are a part of his life. Finally, i would say that hearing STARDUST at the end pleased me a lot since it is probably the best version ever of this song.

5 out of 5 stars King Cole rules forever!.......2000-08-14

I loved this documentary. It was very candid. It profiles Nat's triumphs, but doesn't shy away from the tragedies, either...it captured the life from beginning to end of this larger-than-life entertainer on video, and I loved the clips of Nat singing the songs. It was a little sad to see some of the celebrities who were close friends of Nat's had since died years after this video was made (Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald) but I still enjoyed watching it. Even though they were friends of Nat's it was obvious that they were still in awe of him, as they should be.

Nat King Cole, in my opinion, was the greatest singer that ever lived, and he was a wonderful jazz pianist (even though after 1948, he played the piano less and less). The video goes into a lot of detail, whereas other Nat documentaries somehow leave you wanting to know more. Also featured are interviews with Freddy and Evelyn Coles, Nat's siblings, Maria Cole, Cole's widow, Natalie and Carole Cole, Nat's daughters, jazz pianist George Shearing, Harry Belafonte, Eartha Kitt and Quincy Jones. Also very moving was the final tune, "Stardust", undoubtedly the best version of that song ever recorded. When you heard Nat's voice, footage of his funeral was shown. I honestly broke down and cried, I was so affected.

NAT KING COLE: UNFORGETTABLE is an excellent look at what made this man and his music so special and beloved all over the world. Obviously he made a colossal impact, because his music is still selling, perhaps even better now than it ever did when he was alive. Seeing this video plainly shows why. It is a must-have for Nat's fans, and also makes for a wonderful study in African-American history. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars No Surprises Here (and that's a good thing!).......2007-04-22

This book is a welcome follow-up to Mark Levine's Jazz Piano Book. The only frustration I had with the Jazz Piano Book is that it could not tell me EVERYTHING. The Jazz Piano book only introduced Drop 2 techniques, leaving the voracious student wondering where to find more information. The Drop 2 Book fills that void with the same clarity and pace that made the Jazz Piano Book so useful and popular. The book explains major, minor and dominant progressions, tweaks to make chords sound "modern", applications, problems and work-arounds, soloing, comping, the Altered Bebop Minor Scale, and suggested practice routines. Jazz Piano Masterclass with Mark Levine(With CD) can also be purchased with recorded examples. Most students at this level could hammer out the examples, but the relative volumes of the left and right hands are important to this technique. Such nuances cannot be expressed clearly with standard music notation, so the CD is more than just a nice afterthought. If you have worked through the Jazz Piano Book and feel ready to explore Drop 2 voicings in greater depth, this book will take you there. Buy it and recommend it to all your friends so that we can see more Masterclass books by Mark Levine.

When Barry Diller first stepped onto the Hollywood playing field more than three decades ago, few could have imagined the tremendous impact and power he would one day hold in the entertainment industry. Smart, brash, and a bold risk taker, Diller is considered by many to be the best the business has ever seen. Now, in an eye-opening, vastly entertaining biography, Mair offers a riveting, behind-the-scenes look at the life and work of Barry Diller. Chronicling the brilliant successes—as well as the bitter struggles—of this legendary media mogul, Mair reveals Diller as Hollywood's most visionary executive.

Perhaps more than any other studio executive in recent history, Barry Diller has influenced the viewing habits of both big and small screen audiences. With creativity and insight, he drastically altered the landscape of television programming with groundbreaking, critically acclaimed concepts such as the movie-of-the-week and the miniseries—the first of which was the landmark premiere of Alex Haley's Roots. Always on the cutting edge, Diller also introduced such offbeat—and controversial—shows as The Simpsons and Married . . . With Children. He has also exerted enormous influence over the motion picture industry, revolutionizing the process by which studios acquire scripts, and greenlighting a string of megahits, including Raiders of the Lost Ark, 48 Hours, and Terms of Endearment.

The Barry Diller Story reveals how this media giant climbed from the mailroom of the William Morris Agency to top positions at Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and QVC. With exacting detail, Mair deftly weaves tales of Diller's impressive accomplishments, from his rescue of Paramount Pictures to his historic launching of a fourth network, Fox TV. Here, too, are sobering descriptions of hard-fought failures, among them Diller's abortive attempt at a leveraged buyout of Paramount, and his bid for a CBS-QVC merger.

Today, running Silver King Communications and Savoy Pictures, Barry Diller has embarked on yet another bold media adventure: creating his own television network. A man who has made invaluable contributions to the entertainment industry in the past, he figures to make even more in the future.

The Barry Diller Story boasts a colorful supporting cast of Tinseltown heavy hitters. Among the A-list names you'll find Rupert Murdoch, Sumner Redstone, Marvin Davis, and Michael Eisner. Brimming with fabulous stories of multi-million dollar deals and volatile business alliances, The Barry Diller Story is a revealing look at not only one of today's most powerful media moguls, but the fast-paced and competitive industry in which he has been a star player for more than thirty years.

4 out of 5 stars Ok for a Business History.......2003-01-17

Ok, for a business history of mergers, deals, movies, cable channels and so forth. It does give some glimpse into Diller's Jewish background and childhood, as well as, the vulgar and occasionally violent way he assaults his employees. However, it barely mentions his co-leadership of the notorious Velvet Mafia. Biographers of David Geffen, the long-time "associate" of Diller, are more forthcoming. Stephen Singular in "The Rise and Rise of David Geffen" discusses the Velvet Mafia and its bisexual media mogul leaders including Diller and Geffen. Tom King's "The Operator" flatly states the gay preference of Barry Diller. George Mair's book is well worth reading as is his biography of Si Newhouse, "Newhouse."

Written for the advanced C++ programmer, ATL Internals reveals the inner workings of the Active Template Library (ATL), the toolkit of choice for building today's lightweight Internet and server components.

The book begins with a tour of the ATL code generated by the Microsoft Visual C++ 6 AppWizard. The authors introduce fundamental ATL programming issues here, but they do not provide a general introduction to COM or ATL; they assume that readers have a good deal of background in both C++ and COM.

The book focuses on the extremely useful ATL support classes for managing strings (BSTRs), variants, and smart pointers. It covers the classes that help instantiate COM components (and examines support for different threading models and "creator" classes). The guide continues with object internals--covering object maps and the classes used to manage them--and interfaces, including aggregates and various interface design options. Information on ATL's support for persistence, which lets objects save and restore their state; on how ATL supports basic containers; and on interfaces that work with the Standard Template Library (STL) in C++ is well done.

Later sections explain how to work with windows and ActiveX controls. After some material on events (and connection points), the authors reveal ATL support for basic window operations, including dialogs. For building a custom ActiveX control, the authors provide an excellent example of a nicely functional visual control. (This code will prove invaluable since it illustrates all the essentials of ATL component programming.) --Richard Dragan

                  Book Description

ActiveX controls are a Microsoft technology that allows
developers to reuse components. The ActiveX Template Library (ATL) is a
C++ library of class and function templates. ATL is a faster,
easier-to-learn alternative to Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), that
allows Windows programmers to produce compact code quickly.

This book provides practical solutions for programmers, and explains
these solutions on a detailed, technical level -- keeping the technology in
a real-world context that many books lack. Programmers will learn how to
create new ActiveX controls using ATL, and how to modify the thousands of
available ActiveX controls to fit specific needs.

Written by well-respected writer and teacher Brent Rector along with
DevelopMentor's Chris Sells, the content of this book has been taught in
courses for the Technology Exchange Company and Wise Owl Consulting. The
book covers the latest version of ATL, 2.1, a major revision.

Very professional and prompt. The book arrived earlier than the estimated date and in perfect condition.

ATL internals is the final word on ATL. No other book is needed to master ATL.

I have a good number of books on COM and ATL but getting the low down on ATL starts and ends in this book. The coverage in unbeleiveable. It will make you think you were part of the ATL implementation team.
This book is not a short cut for learning COM programming. You should have a good understanding of how COM works and you also need to know your c++ well(emphasis on well. This book does not teach c++)
However, considering the .NET revolution, ATL may not be of much use for much longer. But if for some reason you need to learn ATL, this book is the ATL University.

5 out of 5 stars Don't do ATL or COM without it.......2002-05-05

This is simply one book that you do not want to be without when designing and implementing a COM project. I purchased the book after I found myself in my first COM project and without any coworkers with any experience in this area. As a comment, I've also rummaged around the Internet and purchase ...books in the effort to come up to speed as quickly as I can. ATL Internals is the best source of data on ATL that I've found so far.

ATL Internals not only discusses ATL but also does and excellent job discussing COM's theory of operation and how a Win32 OS supports COM.

As a warning, however, ATL Internals isn't the only book that you need on a COM project because it is specialized on ATL (and on COM in general). While ATL is useful it is not the only thing that you will have to deal with on a COM project. You will probably need to work with IDL files and for that I can unequivocally recommend "Essential IDL" by Martin Gudgin.

ATL Internals accomplishes several things well; I will try to describe the most valuable aspects of this book. One of the best properties of this book is that it is thorough. It covers ATL in depth.

The following is a partial list of the material in ATL Internals:

                  1) ATL Internals covers using the wizards and explains how to proceed beyond the point where the wizards quit.
                  2) A though discussion of ATL facilities. For example: CComPtr (a COM smart pointer), CComBSTR (a class wrapped around the error-prone BSTR datatype) classes are covered in detail. The text conversion macros are completely covered here. In other books and on the internet I saw code examples that used them but will little explantion.
                  3) Bug warnings, both your (potential) bugs and bugs within ATL. The authors point out the buggy parts of ATL and they invest the necessary effort to warn out about aspects of ATL that, if naively used, create bugs. Numerous pages are dedicated to showing both how to correctly use certain hazardous parts of ATL as well as examples of buggy code. Depreciated techniques are also described for completeness.
                  4) Discussion and examples of various COM issues, including threading issues, connection points, the Service Control manager (SCM)and so on.
                  5) Detailed discussion of the numerous macros that Microsoft uses to conceal substantial code, (e.g. BEGIN_OBJECT_MAP, COM_INTERFACE_ENTRY_IMPL, etc.)
                  6) One of the appendixes shows a cross reference between ATL classes and header file names. This was a welcome convenience (yes I could have greped, but this is quicker)

ATL Internals not only has great content but it is written in a very readable style. The typeset is easy to read and the diagrams are well done.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for understanding what's REALLY going on.......2002-02-14

I first bought this book because it was the only one I could find that had a discussion of ICollectionOnSTLImpl that I could understand. I was already fairly familiar with ATL - at least how to use the wizards - but found that a lot of the documentation that was available was less than useful, especially the collections stuff.

After successfully using Chapter 7 (Collections & Enumerations) for what I needed, I went back and read the whole book from front to back, and started really to understand what was happening under the covers - the whys and wherefores for all of the seemingly quirky little code chunks that I had seen peppered throughout my code, but not understood fully.

This book has become an indispensible resource, that I keep close at hand. I can't really recommend it as a first book on COM or as an introduction to ATL, but this is not a criticism, because that's not its intended purpose. For in-depth coverage of the workings of ATL, though, I haven't come across a better book.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for ATL.......2001-12-01

If you are a COM C++ developer, this book is great and it answer a lot of your questions. However, it is not for COM beginners. If you are a beginner, definitly buy Essential COM (by Don Box).
After reading Essential COM, you should own this book. It is excellent to learn ATL and as a reference too.

3 out of 5 stars ATL Internals: Working with ATL 8 (2nd Edition).......2007-08-16

Most reviews on this book were very good. It was the reason I bought this book. This book covers topic on the ATL 8 as its title says.

However, I don't like this book although I will read this book to the end.
The reason is this. Each chapter discuss about its own topics like strings, and so on. However, it just describes each methods of a given class. It is like that of the MSDN. Why doesn't it show some sample code lines which shows how to use some of them and what the result is? By doing so, it is much easier to understand and read. After reading a few chapters, I started skipping explanations because of the pattern.

Also, just like other books nowadays, it is too descriptive. It will be good if it is a book about explaining concept of the COM, or if it should give some idea on the topic. However, readers of this book already knows about the COM and if they consider "COM", they are already fairly experienced programmers. Then explaining things like the MSDN documents do is not helpful. Probably it would be better if it can explain thing more clearly than the MSDN do, but I guess it is not the case for this book.

Also, what lacks seriously among most COM books is that they fails to describe the automatically inserted macros and their relationship.
Also, for the Visual C++ 2005 IDE, there are some peculiar things. For example, the IDE displays the same interface under class and under interface on its solution pane. You may wonder where to put codes for a certain interface. It could be better if this book explains about them too.

Because COM is designed very confusing way, the Objective-C remote messaging, it needs good explanation. However, this ( and most ) book fails in doing so.

Additionally, it would be better if it has some tutorial chapters.
By following step by step, you can figure out things more clearly, but this book fails in that too. At least the first chapter seems to be written for that purpose. However, it omits some declarations and it is not implied where to put those. So, I gave up writing codes for the chapter.

However, as for the coverage of the topic, it seems to be chosen well.

I know.. people are moving to the C#/C++ .NET remoting.
Nowadays many books on COM/.NET interop are published. So, probably the important of COM is diminishing.
However, COM is still the core of the technology, and I'm not sure if the .NET stands for long-time. Even MS changed things about .NET abruptly so much, and people using .NET seem to use C# instead of C++ generally, I think it is not good idea to rely on proprietary technology. Yeah.. COM is proprietary. But your code using COM doesn't totally rely on proprietary code... at least C++ part...

I hope this book would be improved.

5 out of 5 stars deals with many legacy issues.......2006-08-09

Tavares and his co-authors present a specialised guide to the latest version of Active Template Library. It's for the C++ programmer on a Microsoft machine, who is also familiar with the Component Object Model. The authors specifically state that you really do need expertise in the latter.

The book deals with various legacy issues, mostly dating back to MFC, which is now largely deprecated. But there are also other aspects that are grubby and mostly unavoidable. For example, when dealing with character types, there is an abstraction called OLECHAR. Under Win32, it maps to wchar_t, while under Win16 [and the Mac] it maps to char. The need for this was due to the hardware improvements that took us from 16 bit CPUs to 32 bits. A transition that occurred mostly in the 80s. But for Microsoft, the legacy code remains in use. So there has to be low level logic that maps the character type to an actual appropriately sized memory allocation.

By the way, don't think this issue is confined to Microsoft. C code from that era that was developed for Unix machines, and which might still be in use, often has a similar problem. C macros dealing with this are a notorious source of porting errors.

The text deals with many other aspects of ATL. Some, like collections and enumerations, are very cleanly done. These classes are inherently meant to be high level abstractions. And the C++ code examples that use these are very easy to follow. The discussion of this also includes some sample Visual Basic code. (Most of the book has C++ code.)
