Book Description

In 1993, three young boys were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. In what was widely considered a witch hunt, three older boys were convicted of the killings. Ten years later, Henry Rollins used his considerable cultural chops to raise money for their defense fund and for DNA testing, which could help clear them. His vehicle? The acclaimed CD “Rise Above” and a world tour. Broken Summers details the rehearsing of Black Flag songs he hadn’t played in years, dealing with an arrogant manager or two, a diverse group of musicians, recording the CD, and the arduous trek from Tucson to Tokyo that included grilling by heartland shock jocks unsympathetic to his cause. The book covers 14 months of desperate lows and dramatic highs, all rendered in Rollins’s trademark combative style. Included are black-and-white photos of the rehearsals, recording sessions, and tour.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fans of Henry # 1, Look Here!.......2007-03-29

The title of this review refers to a review I wrote of Rollins' "Unwelcomed Songs". This book, "Broken Summers", showcases Henry #1: funny, articulate and insightful. The man truly gives readers a window not only into his life, but into his mind. Books like this are why journaling is often called an art form.

The only thing that doesn't work here? The added-on Thomas Wolfe tribute chapter, "Nights Below the Treeline". It comes at the end of the book; it's all right for what it is---evidence of Rollins' continued growth as a writer---but it doesn't really fit with the rest of manuscript. But that's a minor concern.

This is a fine work by a talented author. If this is the first Henry Rollins book you've ever read, you're in for quite a treat.

5 out of 5 stars The grit dirt and feel of the road.......2005-05-10

Henry Rollins is not your drugged out space case of a musician. Join him as he writes in breathtaking painful clarity about his neurosis, his thoughts and life on the road. Amped only by an abundance of caffiene, it's an intense ride of focused agression, anger and anguish.

If you're a fan if it's a must read. If not - it might open your eyes to someone old school that manages to be brave and new.

4 out of 5 stars Another Interesting Book By Henry Rollins.......2004-05-05

This book is by far Rollins' most mature writing. Like other books by Rollins Broken Summers has a journal format which creates a sort of intimacy with the reader. It is interesting to read the ideas, rants and daily goings on of a person as well known as Henry Rollins.

Make sure to pick up Rise Above - Album To Benefit the West Memphis Three as well. That is after all the whole reason this book came to be at all.

4 out of 5 stars Not the average Rollins.......2004-05-01

This book is great companion piece to both the Rise Above CD and Henry's current speaking tour. Although the book is slow going at times with workout schedules and menu plans it gives a great insight to touring, band realtions and the politics of making a benefit CD.
You feel for Henry throughout the book that his good intentions are disrupted by other people's agendas and politics and you find yourself hoping he sells 10 million copies of the CD, despite how you may feel about the West Memphis Three.
Don't bother with this book if you're easily offended by truth. Henry frequently challenges the actions of the US government but it's rather him thinking aloud then going on a full on rant. Give it a try. It'll make you think.

5 out of 5 stars henry can do no wrong.......2004-04-16

Henry Rollins can not write a bad book, i've read every single book he has written and they are all good. He writes how he feels and sometimes it makes you feel better. His situations are outragious and lately his books have had alittle Rollins humor he's the man and you should buy this book, and every other book that was writen by Henry Rollins.

                      Book Description

AIDS Alibis tackles the cultural landscape upon which AIDS, often accompanied by poverty, drug addiction, and crime, proliferates on a global scale. Stephanie Kane layers stories of individuals and events—from Chicago to Belize City, to cyberspace—to illustrate the paths of HIV infection and the effects of environment, government intervention, and social mores. Linking ordinary yet kindred lives in communities around the globe, Kane challenges the assumptions underlying the use of police and courts to solve health problems.

The stories reveal the dynamics that determine how the policy decisions of white-collar health-care professionals actually play out in real life. By focusing on life-changing social problems, the narratives highlight the contradictions between public health and criminal law. Look at how HIV has transformed our social consciousness, from intimate touch to institutional outreach. But, Kane argues, these changes are dwarfed by the United States' refusal to stop the war on drugs, in effect misdirecting resources and awareness.

AIDS Alibis combines empirical and interpretive methods in a path-breaking attempt to recognize the extent to which coercive institutional practices are implicated in HIV transmission patterns. Kane shows how the virus feeds on the politics of inequality and indifference, even as it exploits the human need for intimacy and release.

So happy to see the updated book! Love the questions, love the fun facts, love the photos! I'm already planning a post-FRIENDS party - will definitly organize some sort of game with all the questions!

4 out of 5 stars Great Trivia and Information.......2004-03-06

This is a great book for any Friends fan. Lots of background information since the beginning of the show. I hope they continue to update with even more info from the current season.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, but Released Too Soon..........2003-11-12

This trivia book has just about everything you need to know about Friends. It's not just question and answer, like in the trivia game; this book has multiple choice and fill in the blank questions! Plus, they're much more in depth and difficult to answer!

The questions are divided into seasons 1-9, which would make it easy for someone who missed a season to catch up quickly. Not only that, but there's an episode guide in the back that goes halfway through season 9. That's where the book lacks...

This book should have been released when the series ended. That way, it would be complete. This book doesn't even have the entire ninth season! I think they should have just waited and made a trivia book about the entire series, or at least waited to get the entire ninth. Other than that, this book is amazing, a MUST HAVE for any Friends fan...unless they come out with an update once the show ends.

5 out of 5 stars A must have book for any Friends fan!.......2003-10-30

As a huge Friends fanatic, I just love this book. It's so entertaining! The trivia is divided into nine chapters by each season and there are over a hundred questions pertaining to each season. Scattered throughout the book, you'll find various black & white photos from the show, multiple choice quizzes and bits of trivia (for example, you will find out when Jennifer Aniston's "The Rachel" hairstyle debuted).

In addition to all of the trivia questions, there's an episode guide (which goes all the way up to "The One With the Memorial Service" from the ninth season), eight pages of photos (there are some from the show and others are cast publicity shots), a foreword by Gunther (James Michael Tyler) and more!

"Friends: The One About The #1 Sitcom" is truly a must have for any fan of Friends. Lauren Johnson did a fantastic job of putting this book together.

Loved It!! It is fun to read the trivia and/or episode synopsis and watch the show to see it, especially if it is something you can't recall. A MUST for any true Friends fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great basic pocket reference.......2006-02-22

Overall this is a great pocket reference for a new to intermediate PC technician working towards A+ (so therefore does exactly what it says!).
However, some of the photos are misplaced (or mislabled). This is fine if you know what the item is supposed to look like, but not so good for the beginner.
That is the only reason it lost a star from me.
I would suggest tougher proof reading before the next edition.
However, I continue to use this book on a day to day basis and think you will find it a very useful resource! Recommended!

                      5 out of 5 stars A Musta Have!.......2004-05-25

I have to say that McGraw-Hill Osborne make the BEST technology related books in the world. The "Complete Reference" series has always been a favorite of mine, and the "All in One Guide" series is top of the line for thurough, comprehnesive learning and reference. Thier authors know thier stuff and have a way of creating easy-to-read, fun, and incredibly complete books for those of us who want to "know it all" (the why's as well as the hows). But what about those times when you just need a quick reference? Something to jog your memory, or perhaps a more condensed source that is more fit as a study guide... well that's what the A+ Pocket Reference is, and in typical McGraw-Hill Osborne form, it's been done to the highest of standards!

So you're taking the A+ exam in a few days. You've read the big thick comprehensive A+ exam books cover to cover. You understand the information and just need to brush up on some of your weaker areas, or perhaps you just need to keep some of those harder to remember facts straight in your head - the nitty gritty. After all, memorizing IRQ defaults, or the pin numbers for all the different connectors on a PC can be a pain. Or let's maybe you're a PC tech on the job; you're a smart guy, but some of those less often called upon facts can just seem to fall right out of your head!

Well you're in luck either way. This Pocket reference is made just to fit both of those purposes perfectly. As a study guide, this is superb. It's not comprehensive and not meant to be. Just the raw data and basic overviews. It's written to help jog your memory and give you just the plain straight forward fact. It's almost formatted like really really good class notes. This is a book you'll want to bring with you to the exam and flip through imediatly before heading into the exam room.

Packed with to-the-point facts, and containing tons of tables, diagrams, definitions, specs, and so on, this is just the book you'll want to have when refreshing your memory or when you just need that one vital piece of information (or that one number that just slips your mind). Let's say you're working on a PC with a potentially bad power supply and you just can't for the life of your remember which wire has which voltages... fear not, flip to pages 18-20 and you'll have diagrams of molex connectors and a complete table pin-out of the voltages for each wire! Such valuable information is about in this book! After all, who can waste room in thier brains memorizing all the assignments for DMA channels?? Whether you're a soon-to-be test-taker or an IT Pro, this is the easiest quick reference book I know of. It's absolutley invaluable and every PC hobbyist, IT Student or PC Tech should have a copy in thier car, thier drawer and stuffed into thier back pocket - it's a LIFE SAVER!

The only problem was a few mistakes. On pg 7 for example, fig 1-9 is supposed to be of an RJ 11 jack... instead it's a picture of a SIMM and a DIMM! How could the editor miss that!? All tech books have some minor errors, but errors like this one make me a little insecure as to the integrity of the rest of the book's data. When Im taking my A+ exam, there is no room for mistakes, so the reliabillity of a book (particularly a wquick reference study guide) is very important.

Also a few things I were missing that shocked me considering the amazing level of completeness throughout the book. No real mention of wifi nor any table of wireless networking standards is in here - a big shock. Also missing was the awareness of IEEE 1394b - not a huge deal however. What really shocked me was the absence of a diagram of the TIA/EIA RJ 45 Cabling standards! How could they have a table of power cable voltages and a table of outlining the different class fire extinguishers but not cat 5 cable?? If there's one thing I need a pocket reference for it's that one day I need to make a patch cable, because I can never remember the pin layouts of both standards for all 8 wires - come on! :)

IN the end however, this is a very valuable and well done book that belongs on my desk at ALL times. I still give it 5 stars because of the excellence of the overall inclusivness of the book. Hopefully Osborne will make a second edition sometime in the near future to remedy these minor flaws.

                      4 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2003-08-30

For a pocket reference, this is a good book. It covers all the relevant subjects, explains the issues concisely, and provides ample pictures to illustrate points.

However, there are several pictures that are wrong -- they show the wrong device for the explanation.

Secondly, a "pocket" reference simply can't contain all that much information.

Nevertheless, given the fact that this is a pocket reference, it is valueable in providing concise and relevant information, and it covers a wide range of topics that are important.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendously useful PC reference.......2003-08-05

As with all self-styled pocket books, this title is too tall and thick to genuinely fit into a pocket. However, it is conveniently sized for carrying around in laptop bags and leaving on desks.

The thrust of this book is that it can help prepare one for CompTIA's A+ exam topics. In this regard, the publisher may well have sold themselves short; this book really is a tremendously useful collection of PC diagnostic information and any "serious" hobbyist or computer professional would do well to consider it as a resource, whether they intend to pursue A+ certification or not.

The book has a whopping 60 chapters plus index, but these average two pages each though some stretch to four pages. Hence, each topic is easily digested any may mean this book could server as the modern I.T. equivalent of a "bathroom reader"!

Despite its brevity, the author has packed useful, essential and practical information into each chapter. Topics range wildly from serial, parallel and USB connections to Internet sharing. These are divided into two broad categories, namely "parts and connectors" and "operating systems technologies", but this latter part includes technical detail on processors, hard drives and RAM that would more sensibly have formed a third section on their own.

The author has clearly gone to great efforts to produce a precise and accurate book. Careful definitions abound as do cautions such as one advising the term "IDE" can be used to correctly describe both ATA and SCSI drives due to the integrated controller in all modern harddrives. The author then goes on to explain that in practical terms, though, IDE is synonymous with ATA; it is only in highly technical literature that a reference to the "IDE nature" of a SCSI hard drive would be found.

This is undoubtedly a tremendous resource for those pursuing CompTIA A+ certification. Equally as certain, this is an excellent reference for all involved with computer troubleshooting and maintenance. It is especially handy for those who may have got into computing late and never got their hands dirty with DOS and IRQs.

                      Book Description

Many A+ certification guides prepare aspiring PC technicians to pass the exam, but don't put test objectives in a "practical use" context. Other PC repair guides cover A+ exam objectives in a real-world setting, but don't prepare students well enough to pass the test and get certified. The A+ Certification and PC Repair Handbook solves this problem by combining a complete test preparation for the new A+ examinations (220-301 and 220-302) with a hands on guide that reflects how the A+ exam questions apply to real-world PC repair problems. The book teaches users how to install and troubleshoot hardware, and provides solutions to common operating system-related problems for machines running Microsoft Windows 9x, Me, 2000, and XP. Each chapter includes numerous diagrams and photographs, and explains PC repair techniques using easy-to-understand language and accessible terms. For each chapter explaining these PC repair tactics, another chapter is included on how to effectively pass the corresponding portion of the A+ exam, with sample exam questions based on the actual tests. Test-taking techniques are also covered, including the test's recent return to conventional linear testing, as opposed to the adaptive format of previous years. The book's companion CD-ROM contains video tutorials that illustrate PC repair techniques, and full-length, timed, 80-question conventional practice tests covering both modules (Core Hardware and OS Technology) of the A+ certification exam.

This book is good for people seeking PC repair and maintenance tips. The authors include valuable information about diagnostic utilities and tools. But I don't recommend as an A+ exams study guide.
The problem is that the contents of some chapters are not in the right place. For example, chapter 15 covers motherboards, power, bios and expansion buses. As expected, the authors include information about power supply and PCMCIA cards. But also, preventive maintenance and safety! Chapter 18 covers system resources and input devices. Why the authors included here laptops and batteries?
The chapter that covers basic networking is a disaster in terms of organization. The actual chapter is covering A+ Hardware Exam objectives but the authors also include A+ OS Exam objectives (internet, viruses and firewall). To complete the confusion there is information about OSI reference model, bridges, routers, switches and hubs and guess what?
They are not A+ Exam objectives.
The OS exam coverage is incomplete. I can not understand why the authors provided little information about Windows 9X and Windows XP and why they dedicated a long chapter to Windows Me!
When I realized that I wasted my time with this book I purchased another one.

4 out of 5 stars Horrible CD Test.......2004-10-27

Although I found this book to be very informative on all needed A+ certification topics, I was extremely disappointed with the included CD-ROM. The CD-ROM included with this book claims to have practice tests which I was very excited about. The practice exams are horrible. There are terrible misspellings, some incorrect answers, and incorrect questions. Also, there are only 4 practice tests. Two for the first exam, and two for the second exam.

For example, one of the questions asks, "What is the memory address is for the video card? I believe a much better, improved question would be, "On the Reserved (Upper) Memory Map, what is the memory address range for the Video Bios? The choices for this one question are also not good. The correct answer is supposed to be C0000-C7FFF, however it is listed as C000-C7FFF (missing a zero). All of the other choices are also missing letters or zeros.

If you are buying this book as a read-only study guide, you have made the right choice. If you would like a practice test study guide on CD, I would suggest another book.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference for half your A+........2004-08-01

After reading the two excellent reviews for this book, I purchased it to ensure I was ready for the two required A+ tests. That and it was one of the few books at the time which covered the new 220-301 & 302 exam objectives. The only reason I am writing this review is to ensure other A+ certification seekers out there that this book will not be a great deal of help with the OS/220-302 test. $290 is not cheap for an entry level certification and I would hope that anyone prepping for these tests only has to take each test once. On a good note, this book would be a decent PC Hardware Repair Handbook.

The reason it received 3 stars from me was for its weak OS coverage, which is half the certification. When I received the book from Amazon.com, I noticed how short the OS section was compared to the Hardware/Core section. Even the basics of 9x, NT, 2k, and XP cannot be covered in a few short sections like it was done in this book.

I did manage to pass the tests regardless, but my hands on experience and MCSE certification got me through the OS test.

Good luck to all of you!

PC & Electronics: Connecting Your PC to External Devices shows how to make your own version of the oft-advertised Clapper, a device that turns lights on and off in response to the noise of a handclap. Further, it shows you how to make port testers, a thermometer, an interface that enables you to control a model train, a control for a stepper motor, and several other projects--all designed to plug into a port on an IBM-compatible personal computer and interact with the user via software.

A couple of Zoller's projects are straight out of Mr. Wizard's Pointless Science Projects--no one needs a special electronic device for testing light bulbs when a lamp will do the job admirably. Many of the circuits--those having to do with model railroads, for example--are of practical use only to certain people. But this book is for electronic hobbyists, people who get a kick out of soldering components together to make functional devices. The programs that interact with the hardware appear on the companion CD-ROM, where you'll find the Visual Basic source code, though it's not discussed in the text.

Don't worry if you're new to homemade electronics. Zoller explains basic techniques, including soldering, board making, and component identification, in some detail. --David Wall

CDROM did not contain the circuit diagrams as promised#%$@^&*( Software is written in VB4 and won't run unless you have VB4. (I have VB5). Does not give part numbers or manufacturers for some of the most important parts like the pressure sensor or the temperature resistor sensor or where you can buy them. Book may be useful to someone learning perfboard layout and design. The CAD software that comes with it is so stripped down that it is almost useless. You can't judge a book by its cover because this books cover is glossy and colorful and expensive.

2 out of 5 stars This book looked promising but it ultimately disappointed.......2002-10-14

The most frustrating thing about this book is that it does not explain anything about how the circuits work. This makes it almost impossible to fix the errors in the circuits as shown (yes, there are errors). Also, some of his choices for components are dubious, like the 25-pin serial port connectors (why not use a 9 pin?) and the flat (ribbon) Centronics printer cable with 36-pin connector.

I also agree with most of the complaints in the other reviews.

This book could have been so much better if only the workings of the circuits were described (e.g., why a certain resistor value was chosen, why one circuit needs external power and one doesn't, etc.)

                        1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2002-04-28

One would read this book expecting to learn how to interface electronic systems with a pc, but this book leaves you learning nothing. The book gives you sample circuits you can build but can't seem to explain why or how any of them work. Nor can it furnish a schematic. Finaly the book promises to teach you about both serial and parallel interfaces, yet not a single one of the sample circuits are serial. If you're interested in electronics and want to walk away from a book having learned something then this is not the book for you.

                        1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2001-11-19

The whole subject really could be picked off the net. I am
a EE (but rusty) and wanted a simple book to get started prototyping a design off a parellel port.

This book was a hindrence. The so called diagrams are horrid, the writup terse and cryptic, and the scope very limited. (...)

If you are a Technical Hobbyist this book will be useless to you. In fact if you have a pulse this book will be useless to you.

                        1 out of 5 stars Horrible book.......2001-01-04

I have to agree with the rest of the reviews. The circuits may be simple but the code for talking to them is written in VB 4.0. The problem with this is that it makes it very difficult to talk to the serial and parallel ports because they included two dll's (which contain all the manditory code to talk to the ports) when they should have just included the code for them inside the main module of the program (at least then we may have been able to see how in the heck the programs talk to the ports.) Windows 95 and above versions talk differently to the serial and parallel ports than what the software included with the projects does. You may build some neat circuits, but don't expect to be able to control them from the included software. I have had to rewrite each and every individual program in Visual C++. I am a computer science major and this was even difficult for me. I don't recommend this book at all!
