Customer Reviews:
a friendly and complete introduction to music theory.......2006-09-04
The author of this book obviously had those of us who are scared of the complexity of music theory in mind when he wrote this book. Basic Music Theory is a down to earth book that moves gently through the landscape of music theory from the layout of the staff to chords and their inversions. The author also has interludes on practicing and conducting among others. I highly recommend this book if you want to understand music theory whether to compose music or to play it better.
This is Very Basic Stuff.......2004-06-02
As someone who studied an instrument through high school but had no formal training in music theory, this book didn't tell me much that I didn't already know. It's for people with no performance OR theory background. It doesn't cover anything that you'd expect to learn in a college level class. But, it would be a great for someone who's never learned an instrument or for a kid at the elementary or middle school level. It's very clearly written and easy to understand.
Good Book.......2002-12-24
A music teacher friend recommended this book for my son, and before wrapping it I checked it out. I don't know music, but this book seems like a great way to learn. I've bought most other theory books out there and this one seems the friendliest and easiest to understand.
What I forgot.......2002-11-21
I took band in junior high and am now rediscovering my instrument in college on my own. I forgot a lot of stuff since junior high and got this book as a present. Its great! Funny and simple, even when it explains tough ideas, like key signatures. The tricks he uses to get information across are great and have helped me a lot. This is a great book for anyone from junior high to adult!
Great Book.......2002-10-26
Most of my best teachers have been books, and this one is certainly added to my list. In high school what theory I did get was confusing and boring. Not so with this book. It's clear, concise, and maybe what I liked the best was it's style. It reminded me of sitting down and playing with a friend who knows more than I do and is willing to teach me what he knows. It's so much easier to learn that way. Great book. I highly recommend it!

Definitive.......2002-03-09
The scholarship here is solid as Thor's magic hammer; no doubt about that. I probably won't have to buy another book on Norse mythology. Well, maybe a picture book! The writing style is not "scholarly"; it's quite good prose, really. So buy this book and relive the days when gods and frost giants roamed Midgard, Nifelheim, Asgard, Jotunheim...

Succinct and Priced Right.......2004-09-08
Attempting to read the Elder Eddas without some familiarity with Norse mythology can be confusing. I got this book because it is short and inexpensive, thus providing me with the needed background without a large investment in time or money.
The book was written in Danish and translated into English a century ago. Its strong point is the succinct summaries of the Norse myths.
On the other hand, there is at least one curious omission. The book refers to the death of Baldur, but makes no reference to the story of how Baldur died, in a William Tell type archery contest.
Another strange feature is that its summary of Beowulf, which the author considered to be a Norse myth, is incorrect. Contrary to this book's claim, Beowulf did NOT cut off Grendl's arm with a sword. On the contrary, Beowulf said that he would not use a sword because Grendl did not, and pulled Grendl's arm out of its socket.
It turned out that Grendl was enchanted and so impervious to swords.

"The Lost Episode".......2004-12-11
For those of you who are true 'fans' of Northern Exposure, this book is definitely a must have! This book is as quirky as the original series. The reader gets an opportunity to see some of the insights and private thoughts of Cicilians as they write letters to various people outside of Cicily. As you read through the story that is made up of these letters, you can actually hear the characters 'talking'. Also, for those of you who watched Northern Exposure well into the 'Dr. Capra' era, remember a play that is briefly mentioned that Marice wanted to have performed, but something happened to cancel it? The story in this book explains what that reference was about.
Letters From Cicely.......2000-04-03
A must read for any Northern Exposure Fan! I thoroughly enjoyed every page. It is a shame it wasn't a script for a two hour movie.
This book is very disappointing........1999-03-06
I was so excited to get this book! I thought: at last, new adventures with my favorite characters! What a disappointment. Not only is the premise ridiculous, but the characters are written as caricatures of themselves. Joel is only barely recognizable; do you really think he would close a letter with "Yours in Chutzpah!"??? Would Chris end a note with "Supremely Conscious"??? Please. Don't hit us over the head with it! Another irritant is the fact that whenever Joel, Maurice, or Holling sends a letter to a place of business, the personal address reads "Gentlemen." The Northern Exposure series was always exploring issues of gender with thoughtfulness and insight, but this book simply reiterates the cultural undertones of sexism. If you're a real Northern Exposure fan, don't waste your time on this book.
Warm, funny, definitely a feel-good book for NX fans........1998-10-22
Letters from Cicely is a great way to revisit those wonderfully eccentric Cicelians, especially now that the show has been relegated to the hinterlands of re-run TV. The premise of the book is that the whole town cannot sleep for months. The extra time on everyone's hands produces an out-break of letter writing. At first the strange sleeplessness produces no ill effects--no irritability, no loss of clarity. However, after a couple of months pulling all-nighters, things start to go hay-wire. Highly recommended for all who enjoy a good dose of art, philosophy, and a glimpse of life in a small Alaskan town.
It's great!!.......1998-04-22
After reading this book I am really homesick for the televisionseries. In the Netherlands N.E. wasn't popular at all, they didn't even show all of the episodes! So reading a book that gives the exact sensation of watching an episode was a very nice experience for me.

Cicely Saunders: Selected Writings 1958-2004
ASIN: 019851607X |
Book Description
Cicely Saunders is universally acclaimed as a pioneer of modern hospice care. Trained initially in nursing and social work, she qualified in medicine in 1958 and subsequently dedicated the whole of her professional life to improving the care of dying and bereaved people. Founding St Christopher's Hospice in London in 1967, she encouraged a radical new approach to end of life care combining attention to physical, social, emotional and spiritual problems, brilliantly captured in her concept of 'total pain'. Her ideas about clinical care, education and research have been hugely influential, leading to numerous prizes and awards in recognition of her humanitarian achievements. In this book the sociologist and historian David Clark presents a selection of her vast correspondence, together with his own commentary. The letters of Cicely Saunders tell a remarkable story of vision, determination and creativity. They should be read by anyone interested in how we die in the modern world. David Clark is Professor of Medical Sociology at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He is the author and editor of many books and papers and has written widely on sociological aspects of religion, family life and end of life care. His more recent interests include the history of hospice, palliative care and pain medicine; policy issues in the international development of palliative care; and related ethical questions. He is currently writing a major work on the global history of hospice and palliative care.

Excellent guide for musicians on creating digital audio content.......2007-04-22
This is a book for musicians who need to understand the science of sound as well as the principles of digital music production including equipment, computers, and software. There is even an entire chapter dedicated to MIDI. If you are a musician who is interested in getting involved in computer music, this is a great place to start learning as well as getting your hands dirty with the actual business of creating digital music.
Chapter 1. Understanding Digital Sound - Covers the basic physical concepts of analog sound - the sine wave, pitch, amplitude, and perception. Next the book discusses how these concepts translate into digital form.
Chapter 2. Choosing Your Tools - Surveys the available hardware and software you'll need to produce digital audio. Included are photos of typical devices, their uses, their price ranges, and examples of some name-brand products. This section even tells you how to select a computer that is best for your needs.
Chapter 3. Setting Up Your Equipment - Discusses all aspects of connecting the physical hardware you selected in chapter two. This includes a discussion of the desirable acoustic properties of the room you'll be using for your studio.
Chapter 4. Preparing Your Computer for Audio - Discusses setting up your computer to optimize your audio productivity. This chapter gives detailed instructions on the installation and configuration of drivers and plug-ins, copy protection schemes, disk storage space, operating system optimization, and other tips on making a computer most efficient for the production of digital music.
Chapter 5. Quick Songs with Patterns and Loops - Shows you how to quickly and easily turn your ideas into music using Kinetic and GarageBand's pre-built musical components.
Chapter 6. Recording Instruments and Sound - This chapter is all about the different types of microphones and how they work. Also shown are microphone strategies for different instruments and the use of Audacity and Ableton Live, which is recording software included on the DVD.
Chapter 7. Processing and Effects - Without getting over-technical(i.e. mathematical), this section discusses the various effects you'll need to know about to complete most digital audio projects. The chapter begins discussing what signal processors are and then goes on to explain equalization, dynamics processors, time-related effects such as delay and reverb, and specialized processors such as distortion and modulation.
Chapter 8. MIDI: Notes, Rhythms, and Physical Control - Discusses how MIDI enables you to express digital music in a form that seems natural to musicians. The chapter discusses when to use MIDI, how to connect MIDI devices, MIDI's data structure and messaging system, and how to put everything together so that you can use MIDI to create a song.
Chapter 9. Synthesis and Software Instruments - This chapter concerns turning your computer and its software into various musical instruments. You learn how to work with prefabricated sounds, analog waveshapes and their sounds, and how to use envelopes, modulation, and different effects to produce more interesting sounds.

Put It Together: Arrange, Mix, and Master - This chapter takes the material from the previous nine and shows you how to arrange and assemble a complete composition, including mixing, so that you have something professional sounding that is ready for distribution, which is also discussed.
Chapter 11. Producing Printed Scores - Goes into detail about producing a score. Shows how to choose the right notation software, using quick-start features and templates, how to input your notes to your score either via keyboard, MIDI, scanning, or pure audio, assembling and replaying your score, and finally sharing your results with others. Sibelius and Finale are among the software packages featured.

Essential.......2006-08-08
This is a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute study of the digital music world that is unparralelled in accessibility. Read this book cover to cover and then enjoy the freedom to go any direction you like in the field, knowing that you have the fundamentals.
Peter Kirn has managed to explain the concepts in a way that is clear and concise without ever being misleading or confusing. Read this and you can know that the next audio text you pick up you won't get stuck on concepts that are taken for granted by so many authors. College level "Introduction to Music Technology" classes (that so often fall short of expectation) would do themselves a favor to make this required reading.
Extremely Useful Book!.......2006-05-08
This book is a great compendium of explanation, tutorial, product reviews, and software. In fact, for once the included disc has programs that are actually useful - not just time-limited demos of whatever software was new at the time of publishing. The author also utilizes the included software (PC and Mac alike) in his explanations and tutorials, so you're buying a multimedia learning package. Newbies and old pros will be sure to get their money's worth!
Great in-depth book.......2006-02-07
