5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-05-12

Some of Bennett Reimer's writings are very inspiring. I am so thankful that my college professor used this particular book for our required reading.

2 out of 5 stars Words, words, and more words..........2003-02-08

The man has interesting viewpoints, but these are all overshadowed by the overwhelming verbage. He can explain these principles in fewer paragraphs without missing out on anything. Instead, he opts to confuse readers by using too many words and by beating around the bush. I'd rather read something else if this weren't a required text.

1 out of 5 stars 3rd Edition, Same old stuff.......2002-11-10

Reimer wants his readers to think he's done something important by putting his tired, old ideas into new words (here and there) and using a new cover. Only his rabid followers will agree. This is the same old stuff that Reimer has always tried to sell and it fails for the same basic reasons: Reimer does not have -- Reimer never had -- a plausible explanation of the nature and value of music. Reimer is obvioulsy desperate -- he's running very hard -- to save his legacy in this "third" book (the same book x 3!). But he cannot. He fails, again, because a new generation of music education philosophers -- Bowman, Jorgensen, Elliott, Regelski -- has already exposed Reimer's poor thinking, weak scholarship, and faulty logic in the past. This "third" edition is full of the same old problems.

1 out of 5 stars A poor book.......2001-07-24

This book is poor. It 's not "philosophical" in any sense because it's not logical and it's not supported by the majority of music scholars today. Reimer contradicts himself at every turn; he doesn't understand what Langer is really saying; and. his absolutist notion of music is completely out of synch with what most scholars argue about music today. Reimer just mouths a lot of fluffy, feel-good nonsense.

1 out of 5 stars Not convincing!.......1999-12-10

This book is selling old, modernist ideas about music which are totally unconvincing compared to the postmodern views of music (e.g., Lawrence Kramer, John Shepherd, George Lipsitz, Robert Walser, Richard Taruskin) I've been studying in musicology and ethnomusicology courses (where the profs just chuckle at Reimer's book). Why do my music education profs still believe this stuff?

    Digital Delirium is written like a jazz album, with freeform narrative drifting around solid ideological structures the way that jazz improvisations run figures around fundamental themes. St. Martin's Press describes the book as "a manifesto against the right-wing politics of cyberlibertarianism." That's certainly a big part of this book. The contributors devote much of their efforts to examining the social and ethical structures of a wired world. But more than that, Digital Delirium revels in taking readers to places where they can view the whole world of cyberspace from new perspectives.

    Science fiction writer Bruce Sterling looks into the myth of the Cyberpunk Hacker Hero and proves that it's about as substantial as Spider-Man. Paul Virilio observes how cyberspace splits an individual into a physical being and a ghostly other being that can be dramatically involved with others at a distance. There's a mocking quality to the whole book that practically defies readers to take themselves or the grand pronouncements about cyberutopian thinking too seriously.

    While some contributors, such as Sterling, make their points through witty rants, others express themselves through poetry, literary prose, or even screenplays. This is a through-the-looking-glass examination of how technology affects society. Each article in the collection is food for hours of late-night conversation.

    Book Description

    Digital Delirium is a manifest against the right-wing politics of cyberlibertarianism and for rewiring the question of ethics to digital reality. Bringing together the most creative minds of the digital generation, it explores what is lost and what is gained by being digital.

    4 out of 5 stars Amazing document of its time.......2003-07-03

    It's amazing how much people wrote off the Krokers when this was published but also how prescient they have been proven to be since the publication of their trilogy Data Trash (Kroker and Weinstein), Hacking the Future, and Digital Delirium. No one else writing in the era was even close to as bang-on in their analysis, and although the three works can be difficult at times, they remain the top of the pile among the literature - but academic and popular - of that era in this subject.

    1 out of 5 stars Silly ignorance........2001-02-21

    Not since the writing of Karl Marx has there been such garbage.

    3 out of 5 stars It's still easier to read than "Wired" magazine.......2000-07-05

    The reflections offered by the various contributors to "Digital Delirium" help remind us of exactly what it is we should ponder before formally adopting new systems and technologies into our daily routines. The book's central theme is to approach the Digital/Information Age with an acknowledgement of potential societal consequences. Even the most optimistic supporters for global networking concede that there are certain dangers with cybertechnology that can befall disaster on the inexperienced and the ignorant. If there is one thing the Internet does not have a lot of is accountability; until global networks become self-verifying, we will have to take the information we process with a proper degree of skepticism.

    While it was not hard to derive some practical knowledge and advice from the book's material, a few select authors nevertheless ventured into a realm of dialogue that seemed designed more for bewilderment and confusion than clarity and understanding. In reading some of the blueprints for futuristic societies as described by Marcos Novak, Paolo Atzori, and a host of others, I found it difficult to figure if they were being literal, speaking metaphorically, or just pulling my chain. In spite of this problem, there were three consistencies that I deciphered as fundamental beliefs that editors Arthur and Marilouise Kroker hoped to convey by virtue of the articles published in their book. First is the danger or right-wing politics and government regulation of the Internet and global communication. Second is the contradictory and thereby self-defeating intellectual arguments taken by those who fear or oppose cybertechnology. Finally, there is the sense that the new Information Age has been overrated in terms of its impact and importance, and that the authors are merely practicing cynicism as they patronizingly amuse and augment the curiosity of their brainwashed readers with the book's technoscopic subject matter.

    The published writings can be taken collectively as a "manifesto in contention against right-wing politics and cyberlibertarianism" that threaten the functioning use of the Internet as a democratic tool for all individuals. Humanists like Slavoj Zizek and Robert Adrian, in conjunction with patronizing skeptics such as R.U. Sirius and Jean Baudrillard proclaim the imminent dangers to our basic freedoms if global communication is used by a group of elitists to manipulate minds and disperse propaganda to credulous and unsuspecting victims. I whole-heartedly agree on this standpoint. However, I was disheartened at the general consensus among the writers that religions, in particular Fundamental Christianity and Catholicism, are examples of these deceiving congregations that serve only to indoctrinate their followers into a state of mind incapable of independent thought. There is wonder and excitement to be had with the possibilities presented by technological breakthroughs, but there is also great sadness where secular principles such as materiality and profitability proceed to make one a godless creature; indeed, one can be too intellectual for his own good.

    In presenting written arguments against the implementation of worldwide networks and open systems, Kroker cleverly reveals a contradiction that makes the dissenters' case less credible. For example, Berhnard Serexhe states in no uncertain terms that interactive communications will function as a powerful economic / marketing tool that will attempt to homogenize consumers, erase multiculturalism, and spell the end of European cultural identity. Geert Lovink and Slavoj Zizek counter this fear with the contradicting apprehension felt by right-wing nationalists who prefer homogeneity (as long as it is with their belief system) versus diversity but consider the Internet as a method of introducing foreign influences into their temporal mainstream. Which is it? Will we be subject to pan-capitalism and global marketing aspiring to create an online society with unvarying tastes and cultural preferences? Or will an autonomous Internet open the gates to individualism and encourage worldwide diversity at the expense of segregated nationalistic esteem? Perhaps there is a point to the cynical undertone evident throughout "Digital Delirium." Not only are the pessimists getting worked up over nothing, but cybertech industry proponents themselves cannot distinguish science fiction from reality in their speculative prognostications of where technological advancements will take us as a community. As manifested by the Critical Art Ensemble, too many so-called information age innovations and products serve no practical purpose, are underutilized, or are presently unavailable to much of the world. This somewhat fits in with my own conjecture. The true dynamic puissance of global networking on both societal and business organizations cannot be unerringly measured or estimated until we experience real global accessibility. Worldwide interconnectivity in an absolute sense is has not yet been achieved; as such, depictions of futuristic societies, technological advancements, and networking potentials remain a subject of contemplation. It is in this ambience that the contents of "Digital Delirium" should be read and analyzed.

      Book Description

      The concept of bartering can be applied to virtually every aspect of life and commerce.

      In bartering, there is an implicit psychological process by which both parties mutually arrive at a "comfort zone" which enables a transaction or "value event" to occur. This book, based on the collected writings of James Harvey Stout, recognizes the universality of barter as a vibrant currency in all sectors of life.

      In publishing this text, our purpose is to provide an illustrative guide, a road map to navigate the terrain of this process, both in the context of broad principles as well as the nuances leading to a successful outcome for all participants.

          From the author: The NEECHAM Confusion Scale was used to study the incidence and severity of acute confusion among elders in a rural community hospital. Thirty-eight patients over the age of 64 were assessed for confusion within 48 hours of admission. The NEECHAM Confusion Scale was readministered to a subsample of 17 elders within 24 hours of pending discharge. The incidence of acute confusion was 81.5% at admission with a prevalence of 52.9% at discharge. Staff identified signs of acute confusion in 34.2% of the elders confused upon admission as indicated by the NEECHAM Confusion Scale. These findings have major implications for adult health nursing practice.

                        Now that I have your attention, let me begin by saying that every male character on the show is: emasculated, infantile and generally unattractive, (not that it should matter but since the show's humor draws so heavily upon that, it's relevant). Next, why does David K. need to write scripts on the level of 13yr olds? Why do we need references to sweat, baldness and obseity? Are these "beautiful" people so sheltered in their insulated little worlds; that when they venture outside they are reduced to giggles by a fat man? And why does everyone harp about her weight? Personally I have no problem with it, but, since she's on television and anorexia is epidemic nowadays she is a role model whether she likes it or not. And let's face it, she looks like a walking anatomy lesson. But hey, I didn't even read the book.

                        5 out of 5 stars THE MUST READ BOOK OF THE CENTURY!.......1999-05-07

                        Not only is the television series amazing, but the books, that go with it, are completely out of this world. They aren't only amazing, but just WOW! The pictures, the writing and everything else is fab. If you've read and enjoyed this, then read 'That Lawyer Lady: The Unauthorized Guide to Ally's World'. Gabriel

                        She really lets you know what its like on both sides of the story.I don't understand why everyone has to comment on her weight, I think she's perfect! She will last for a really long time.

                        3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but I am a die hard Ally Fan, so I have mixed views.......1999-02-14

                        It's ok, but a bit cheesy. I am waiting for the official one! DEK rocks! John and Fish were explored nicely though.

                        3 out of 5 stars Broad, High Level Overview.......2006-10-21

                        This book is a broad overview of all things related to data storage:

                        * how disk drives work
                        * how file systems and drivers use disk drives
                        * direct attached storage (local disk drive)
                        * SCSI
                        * RAID
                        * NAS (network attached storage)
                        * SAN (storage area network)
                        * backups and tape technologies

                        With this much territory to cover, the author had to choose between writing an encyclopedia and keeping things high level. He opted for high level. The book is a good way to get started with these topics but it doesn't take you far enough to be practical. The author strives for vendor neutrality (and achieves it), but of course you can only use products from vendors. Getting a handle on any particular product should be easier once you've read this.

                        The ordering of the material is not the best. Of the topics covered, most people understand the file system best. This could have been used as the starting point to go deeper into what lays behind the file system. Unfortunately, the file system isn't really discussed until chapter 14.

                        As the name indicates this book is an introduction to all aspects of storage networking. While you think it may just deal with SANs, it does not. Author Marc Farley starts with as he calls it, "The Big Picture of Storage Netorking". These chapters cover basic storage principles and how storage I/O works. He then follows with a discussion of the different storage architectures available and their history. While this may not seem important, for the person entering the storage arena it's valuable information to know where storage has come in the last 20 years.

                        The next two parts cover data redundancy and storage and data management. Farley gives very good descriptions on the different redundancy options available. He also goes into an analysis of the different advantages and disadvantages of each. While it's not an extensive discussion it does give an administrator a basis for an analysis. Discussions of remote file copy and multipathing, which are very important in storage networking, are described and broken down into terms that the novice storage person can comprehend.

                        While the first three parts of the book may seem like a review and unnecessary to most. They do provide a good foundation for Parts IV and V, which deal with storage and data management. As Farley points out these two areas are important and should not book overlooked by the storage administrator. With the ever changing legal environment and governmental regulations, data management and retention looks to be the next big evolution in storage management.

                        As advertised Storage Networking Fundamentals: An Introduction to Storage Devices, Subsystems, Applications, Management, and File Systems provides a good introduction to storage fundamentals for the person new to storage. For the person already familiar with storage it provides details that were either not know or forgotten. At the very least it provides some of the latest information in the storage arena.

                        I would highly recommend this book for anybody involved with storage administration or storage networking.

                        3 out of 5 stars Misleading book title.......2005-08-08

                        This is a good storage book overall but... released under wrong title. If you erase "networking" part out of the title, it will be exactly what the book is about. Author himself emphasize the book is not really about "connecting function". He also introduces some new terms and even though these are quite acceptable for the discussion matter those terms barely might be seen somewhere else.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent at the Fundamentals.......2005-06-27

                        This book was not what I expected...I pre-ordered it as soon as I saw that Cisco Press had a new storage book coming out, and I expected that at least some of its content would cover Cisco's storage products (the MDS line in particular). I got the book the week it came out, looked at the TOC and was immediately disappointed. That's the bad news. The good news is that I read the book anyway and was very pleasantly suprised. This is an awesome book about "storage networking fundamentals". Had my expectations been in line with the very clear title, I wouldn't have been disappointed. The title is not misleading, I just assumed that it would have MDS content.

                        This is definitely the most relevant and up-to-date text about storage networking, and I find myself constantly recommending it to other engineers who want to see what storage networking is all about. As other reviewers noted - the author doesn't go terribly deep on every topic. Again, the title says it all - "fundamentals". If you are new to the storage world, this is currently the one "must read" in my opinion.

                        One small gripe that comes to mind is the author's failure to differentiate between RAID 0+1 and 1+0. He, like many others, makes the mistake of calling RAID 0+1 "RAID 10". To be clear, 0+1 is striping and then mirroring the striped sets. 1+0 (aka RAID 10) is mirroring and then striping across the mirrored sets. Too many people think this difference isn't important, but it is!

                        5 out of 5 stars Storage Networking Fundamentals is a very well written book........2005-06-27

                        Storage Networking Fundamentals is a very well written book. As its title implies, it provides a fantastic introduction to Storage Area Networking, providing details from disk drive mechanics to Information Life-Cycle Management (ILM). Furthermore, this book impressed me because it consistently did one thing: it did not push or suggest Cisco products. This book very clearly at the beginning stated it was a not a networking book, but a storage book. It then sets out to explain Storage Area Networking in vendor neutral terms. If fact, it pokes fun at a few vendors because of the multitude of standards and technologies in Storage Networking. This should be commended as well as appreciated. The author does not adhere to one vendor's technology, but addresses general terms and explains where differences between vendors occur.

                        I particularly liked Part II of the book that covered the actual hardware and software that makes a SAN work. This nicely started with a detailed overview of hard drives, the building blocks of storage, and ended with technologies for connecting Storage Area Networks. Very nice growth and building on previous chapters.

                        My only small complaint about the book was its chapter layout. It would've been easier to understand Part II if Chapter 14 and 15 would've come first. This explains file systems and how they interact with storage. Being an introduction to Storage Area Networking, it would've been appropriate to explain storage to the reader as they perceive storage now. And since an introductory reader understands file systems, since they interact with a personal computer daily, it would've been nice to include these concepts earlier in the book. However, this is a minor flaw.

                        Overall, I recommend this book to anyone looking to start learning Storage Area Networking. A very well written book with easy to understand concepts. 5 Stars!
