5 out of 5 stars Good techniques book for those not familiar with brass instruments!.......2006-03-25

This book has great info on the various brass instruments, exercises and fingerings for the more common instruments. It is the required text for my college's Brass Techniques class for music teachers with little or no brass background. Overall a good buy, especially for those looking to get basic info before they start teaching instrumental music.

I took a course in teaching brass instruments at the University of North Texas this past semester. Scott Whitener's book was one of the texts used in the course. I believe that anyone wishing to learn more about brass instruments would benefit from reading Scott Whitener's book. He discusses the basic concepts of brass playing, mouthpieces, trumpets, trombones, tubas, horns, baritones/euphoniums, breathing, articulation, posture, instrument care, tone production, and the historical development of brass instruments. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent pedagogical resource.......1998-09-11

This book has an excellent overall pedigogical approach to brass. Good historical outline of each instrument; good description of accessories; list of recordings for each instrument; group examples that can be performed with the entire class. An added bonus is a section that includes pictures of famous performers and ensembles. The only reservation that I have with this resource is that, in my opinion, the ensemble materials progress too rapidly. I would strongly recommend this book for university brass technique (music education) courses and for public/private school music educators.

    Book Description

Anyone who reads the newspaper, watches television, or listens to casual conversation on the street is aware of the ubiquitous nature of sport. It is everywhere. It flavors our national culture and permeates every corner of our daily lives. Sport in America, as in many countries, is big business, popular culture, and potent politics. It has become its own medium of communication and has important ramifications for international and multicultural relationships. There is no topic that should be of greater interest to social science in general and anthropology in particular than the study of human sport. This volume presents the theory, history, practice, and institution of human sport.

            Book Description

Leisure is much more than what little time is left over after work. Both scholarly publications and popular opinion claim that leisure, at least in industrialized countries, will likely become one of the crucial components in people's lives, eventually resulting in a future society of leisure. Leisure experience can be objective and/or subjective, long-lasting or brief, planned or spontaneous, and end in itself or therapeutic/compensatory, sociable or solitary. This book reviews all of these aspects. Part One gives a historical overview of leisure, while Part Two examines definitions, disciplinary perspectives, theories and paradigms. Part Three looks at the inequitable allocation of leisure time among various population groups, leisure throughout the three stages of the life cycle, different kinds of leisure activities, and constraints and barriers to leisure. An extensive list of references to supplement this comprehensive discussion of one of the most important components in people's lives.

5 out of 5 stars Top book on popular Zenith Antique Radios.......2006-01-07

I have to start by saying I have been a collector of antique radios for over 25 years, so this book is right up my alley.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Harold Cones at a radio swap meet several years ago, and heard a talk about the research that went into this series of books on Zenith.

Zenith radios are some of the most collectable antique radios. From the radio made famous (and expensive) by the Walton's Television series, to the more common table radios, and the large console radios with the big black dials and funny green "Magic Eye" tubes. This is from an era where worldwide communication was not instantaneous, and television was but a dream.

These authors had the opportunity to go through the archives of the Zenith Radio company prior to its dissolution. Zenith was the last American radio and televison manufacturer. It was eventually purchased by LG Electronics of Hong Kong.

The radios of the mid to late thirties seems to be the culmination of both the woodworking art and the art of hand made electronics. This book focuses on the story behind the company and the people who designed and made the radios.

There are some beautiful photographs of many of the Zenith radios made during this period. Each photograph is accompanied by a rarity value and an estimated value range. The photography is exceptional.

In addition, the book has many reproductions of advertisements of the time, and many other documents that give insight to the company during this ten year period.

One section that I found very interesting was composed of several drawings of possible designs for radios that were never made. These were provided by the family of the designer (Mr Budlong), and I see these designs from the early 40's look like the designs of the late 50's and early 60's, indicating that he was way ahead of his time.

All in all, this is a great book for anyone who has ever had or still has a Zenith radio, or is just interested in the story of a great American company that has since faded into history.

            4 out of 5 stars Difficult read........2006-04-11

I had this book for a class at post graduate school. The material in the book is good, but it is unfortunate how difficult reading the book is. I think the reason for this is the translation from another language.

Aside from the english of the book, the arguments presented are down so in a very logical progression and made very well.

2 out of 5 stars Low on specifics, low on applicability.......2004-07-06

I had much higher hopes for this book. The idea of software architecture is finally coming into its own as a field of study. That includes the levels above individual software systems, including highly configurable systems and whole corporate product families. The subtitle, "Adopting and evolving a product line approach," looked promising.

A few things early on left me skeptical. Section I.4.1, for example, discusses quality factors of an architecture. The approach is completely retrospective, though. It only looks backwards at what emerged in a system, not forwards into how a system should be designed. I agree with section I.5.5 that some quality requirement X will be implemented across some set of system modules. Summing that quality's presence across all modules to add up to X is a positively dangerous mis-statement. The strength of a chain is in all of its links, but is not the sum of the link strengths - the strength of a system's security is not increased by adding yet more insecure modules.

The treatment of "software science" metrics is deplorably shallow. If you must use that approach, it's best to use a wide variety of indicators with different sensitivities, ideally indicators that don't depend on the programming language. The author stops with one metric, a graph-theoretic number that would be nearly impossible to apply to XSLT, Prolog, UI specification systems, database schemata, and so on. "Experience-based assessment" proposes the use of external assessment teams, without suggesting any way of guaging that team's ability. The discussion of processes vs. threads, with respect to program reliability misses the most critical point: that processes normally have hardware memory protection and threads don't. Unwittingly or maliciously shared memory is the biggest threat to reliability, and is a threat in process systems without memory protection.

The same shallow approach appears elsewhere in the "Transformation of architecture" section, in the dicussion of design patterns. The failure to distinguish strategic from tactical design issues is disappointing. A facade pattern is a useful tool, at the level of a few modules or minor subsystem. It is not a fundamental organizational principle capable of guiding the system's future structure - it doesn't work at the architectural level.

Bosch's emphasis is on analysis of successful systems and on retrofit of older systems under active development. Good stuff - that really describes the large majority of software effort. The discussion never gets started, however, because it scarcely mentions any way of determining which existing subsystems demand the most immediate attention.

There are lots more problems with this book, but I hope the pattern is clear: shallow discussion, weak specifics, and sparse mention of commercially critical issues.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent fifth book about the subject.......2002-03-27

This book is certainly not for beginners. You already have to know a lot about software architecture to meaningfully read it.

It is very abstract, elegant and bright. The reading style is still amazingly light. If you are in the know you are delighted to read about it in such an elegant way. If you are not in the know you will have trouble to develop a concrete idea and to digest all those different aspects on so few pages.

5 out of 5 stars Sound approach - ATAM proponents will like this book!.......2001-05-01

This book provides an interesting and comprehensive approach to designing software architectures. The author crystalized four concepts that have greatly influenced on my thinking: (1)focus on quality attributes during the design and evaluation, (2) a rich set of evaluation techniques, (3) dimensional views of the architecture design, and (4) a realistic approach to reusability.

The author's treatment of quality attributes provides a good foundation for the design process. The author's method of linking quality attributes to quality requirements is plain good practice and bears careful reading. Traceability in any engineering or design effort is essential and the approach proposed needs to be included early in the life cycle.

There are major four evaluation techniques covered in the book: Scenario-based that examines software qualities within the context of scenarios; simulation techniques that model the architecture in a simulation environment; mathematical modeling that uses statistics, probability and other techniques to predict qualities such as reliability, etc.; and experienced-based reasoning (see Brooks' Mythical Man Month for a good explanation of that!).

Among the most powerful concepts presented is dimensional views, which decompose the architecture into component and system views; business, organization, process and technology views; and development, usage and evolution views. This approach ensures that an architecture's design proceeds in accordance with findings from a thorough analysis, and that all factors be considered and incorporated into the design. If you are a proponent of SEI's Architecture Trade-off Analysis Method (ATAM) you will see some similarities. However, if you carefully examine the author's approach you will see some gaps: the focus is not on trade-off points (although the dimensional views will certainly uncover trade-offs that have to be made), and ATAM does not address the evolution of the architecture. The product line approach proposed by the author does. Applying product line concepts to design and development promotes reusability, as well as providing a set of guidelines for evolving or changing the architecture.

Overall this is an excellent book that balances theory with a practical approach that is supported by case studies and real examples. I view it as a philosophy on architecture design instead of a methodology. It is a refreshing change from some of the architecture books I have read that are filled with dogmatic methods and "design in a vacuum". The approach proposed will link design to requirements, and will ensure that the architecture meets standards that are defined by quality attributes and not arbitrary design criteria.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent description of software product lines.......2007-03-10

I do a lot of work on large software projects. One area I work in a lot is helping to define and organize the requirements. This can be a difficult task for product line architectures.

Mr. Gomaa does an excellent job describing all of the implications of designing software product lines, including the managing of the requirements for such a project. There is also a lot of great information about architecting such a project (another area I frequently work in).

This book is one I keep on my professional bookshelf and refer to often. I have recommended it to many of my colleagues. I think anyone on a project team for software product lines can benefit from reading this book, whether the person is a requirements writer, architect, manager, or designer.

This book is great for the UML syntax. The author does a great job of putting together a UML profile for Product Line Engineering modeling, and has great examples on how to use it.

But if you decide to read it beware that it excludes many of the Architectural practices that are found in the other resources. It does not use Attribute Driven Design, Cost-Benefit Analysis, or Architectural Tradeoff Analysis.

If you get it, keep that in mind. It is only good for an artifact creation reference, not the process behind arriving at the artifacts.

I would definitely recommend it for the UML profile it has and the examples the author provides.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting contribution but does not solve the Problems.......2005-05-30

            All,

There are many sources that if you are reading this you are probably aware of. UML is in my opinion a robust enough modeling environment to do pattern based software architectures at a macro level but this post is about taking UML a step farther to Domain Specific Software Factory type concepts, which this book dances around and I believe crosses over into territority that is quite dangerous for UML (and I am a huge fan of UML. I use it for Agile Modeling as well as early stage iteration design, but the UML is superceeded by Test Driven Development at development time).

As long as you stay at a rather low level of abstraction, UML is fine. However it semantically falls apart as the level of abstraction rises and you try to build very specific domain solutions (and abstraction we know will rise in the bext few months/years dramatically with the MDA initiative and Microsoft's Software Factories).

If you want to understand why UML runs out of gas as you move up in abstraction and get more specific in your domain, rather then rehash other's arguments, read the book "Software Factories" - Appendix B, by Steve Cook and Stuart Kent. It explains in detail why UML is a dead end for large scale, mass market software factories and model driven development. Alternatively, in my opinion, as long as you keep things technical and close to the 'classes, patterns, general purpose frameworks like logging, ORM, etc.' you are fine I believe.

The last paragraph says it all:

"In its role as the standard notation for documenting and communicating Object-Oriented concepts, UML 2 represents a useful incremental extension to UML 1. However, it remains poor at representing specific programming languages and platform technologies"....

There is much, much more. The above is copyright Wiley Publishing, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana. 2004, ISBN: 0-471-20284-3 All Rights Reserved.

I strongly recommend you read the software factories book above to get an understanding and perhaps arrive at a different perspective then trying to 'make the UML shoe fit'.. Many seem to just do anything to go against Microsoft in a very unscientific way. Some people let emotions and false assumptions lead them astray from what is scientifically the right answer. I am asking you all now to think like a scientist and have an open mind to what is the best solution for a given problem. I'm not even saying this is wrong. Just far less correct and appropriate. Let your own investigation lead you to the answer, not marketing or what I have to say.

5 out of 5 stars Good Text for Reusable Software Architecture.......2004-11-16

This book is a good text for software product lines. The approach to PLUS is well described with reasonable examples represented using UML notation, which make readers understand clearly the theoretical background of PLUS. This book can be used for a graduate course developing Reusable Software Architecture in terms of software product lines. In particular, it illustrates very well how reusable software architecture is specified from product line multiple-view models.

4 out of 5 stars UML for software products, maybe lines too?.......2004-10-14

It's still unclear to me how the software product lines in this book are distinguished simply from the products themselves. There is more emphasis on reuse and this appears to be the key distinguishing characteristic. But even with the book just focusing on a singly product this is a valuable work showing the use of techniques of Object Oriented Analysis and Design using UML. The book is a solid piece of work (both physically and in content), though there is a bias towards illustrations as opposed to explanatory text. Software architects should evaluate the book in person. Front line software engineers probably won't find much they can apply to their work.
