Book Description

This expanded and completely revised fourth edition is a unique handbook, spanning a thousand years of music from Gregorian chant via Bach and Beethoven to current leading lights such as Thomas Adès and Kaija Saariaho. There are concise biographical profiles of more than 200 composers and informative summaries of the major compositions in all genres, from chamber works to operatic epics. Topics such as the influence of jazz, notation, conducting, the madrigal, and why Stradivarius made such great violins are covered fully in feature boxes. The Rough Guide has been praised for its mix of well-known composers with more obscure, but interesting, figures (like Antoine Brumel and Barbara Strozzi), and for the way it takes contemporary music seriously.

5 out of 5 stars A great place to start to explore classical music.......2006-04-19

This book is invaluable for those who have a limited knowledge of classical music and want to expand their listening repertoire. It is a compendium of information on over two hundred classical composers and their works. In addition to the information presented by composer, a number of boxes explore themes as diverse as "What is a Fugue?" (under Bach), "The Cult of the Conductor" (under Mahler) and "The Crisis of Tonality" (under Schoenberg). The choice of composers is excellent - of course when the number is limited, one can always gripe about the favourites that have been left out. The accounts are written in a lively, up-beat style that does not compromise the fidelity of the information. Each composer is covered by an introductory section that is largely biographic, followed by a treatment of major works. Finally, a number (typically one to three) of key recordings are recommended - they tend towards the conservative, but pretty much ensure that the new listener will not be disappointed.

It is worth pointing out that this book does not aspire to be a buyer's guide to CDs. That is the task of, for example, the Penguin and Gramophone guides (on Amazon: ISBN 0141022620 & 0860249727 respectively).

I would certainly recommend this book above the NPR guide and other "beginners guides" I have seen. Testimony to that is the fact that my copy has fallen apart from overuse over the years and is now held together with rubber bands. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A superb guide .......2005-09-15

The British seem to have a nack for classical music guides (Penguin, Gramophone) and here is another superb one from the Penguin people - albeit of a different breed. The BBC called this guide, "The perfect classical-music primer" and I think they are right on the money. I have nearly all the available guides and would cite "The Rough Guide" (along with David Dubal's "Essential Cannon") as the most complete, compelling and musically-rich overview of the world of classical music. This 2005 edition gives you three main things: engaging bio's on over 200 composers (a lot), a listing and short synopsis of their major works and then the editor's TOP one or two recording recommendations with some reasons for their choice. As such this book is more a guide to the repertoire of classical music and NOT a complete buying guide like The Penguin Guide. To give you an idea of the level of depth they cover, here's an example of the major compositions listed under "Franz Schubert":

Symphonies: No. 4, 5, 6, 8, 9
Chamber Music: "Trout" Quintet, Piano Trios No. 1/2, Arpeggione, Octet, Late Quartets, Last Quintet
Songs: "Winterreise," "Die Schone Mullerin"
Piano Music: Sonatas No. 14, 17, 18, 19-21; Impromptus, Moments Musicaux, Wanderer, Fantasie in F-minor

This is a superbly written and highly enjoyable book with much style and substance - but without being needlessly prosaic or overloaded with musical jargon - and should appeal to both the newcomer and classical veteran. The visual layout is among the best around - attractive and easy to follow with its clearly bolded sections, color-enhanced highlights and many photos including recommended CD's. Additionally, the many "side bar" educational texts are highly interesting, such as the ones about the historical and scientific background on Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier" or Antonio Stradivari's violins. I thoroughly enjoy reading through this book at random just for fun.

Also on the positive side, the editors narrow the field of recordings down to one or two top picks per major work - which allows a quick selection to be made with a reasonable chance of satisfaction by the classical music consumer. While such recommendations will always be subjective and somewhat limiting, the ones here are reliable and explained as to why they were chosen (a real plus as not all guides do this). So, guides as this are ideal for listeners who just want a couple quick, reliable and up-to-date CD recommendations.

Not part of the scope: more complete listing or comparisons of available recordings or detailed analyis/program notes of the major works. For this, the witty "NPR Guide" or humongous "All Music Guide" have more discussion of the musical score if that is your interest. Along with the NPR Guide or David Dubal's book, The Rough Guide is probably the best place to start one's journey into the classics but will not become obsolute anytime soon as it has some great depth. If you want the more musicology discussion - such as the various eras of classical music - Dubal's guide has the most intellectual depth. If you are looking to compare the widest selection of recordings, the 1500+ page Penguin Guide is the undisputed champion for many. 5 stars.

Book Description

The traffic-choked streets of Tehran and the magnificent mosques of Isfahan, the underground DJs and the Sufi minstrels of Kurdistan, are all reflected in the vibrant musical scene in Iran. When the Islamic Revolution took place in 1979 a great deal of music was banned. However, this didn’t last long and from contemporary rappers to folk legends, from great singing stars to contemporary bands, from regional traditionalists to the trance musicians of Baluchistan, this Rough Guide features a captivating cross-section of contemporary Iranian sounds.

5 out of 5 stars The Glorious Heritage of Persia.......2006-10-02

In recent years, the media has embarked on a campaign to villify Iran as little more than a fanatical Islamic theocracy seeking to "destroy our way of life". Yet there is another side of Iran that few westerners get to see. For thousands of years (before the Roman empire, even before Alexander!), Persia has been a great center of art, literature, poetry, learning, music and culture. Great works like the Shah-Nameh, Hazer Afsaneh (from which the 1001 Nights originated) and the poetry of Rumi, Hafez and Omar Khayyam all came from Iran. Since the Arab invasion of the 7th century, the Persians have worked to assert their own identity, and in the proccess wound up influencing much of the Middle East and South Asia. Many Iranians are quite proud of this heritage (rightly so I might add), and proudly call themselves Persian.

This CD is but a small sampling of the incredible musical diversity in modern day Iran. Such a survey is obviously going to leave out some major artists, but this CD benefits from being very fresh and up to date. As such, it can serve as a cross-cultural window for more westerners to see the REAL Iran. The classical, improvisational music of Persia is well represented by Kayhan Kolhor & Ali Akbar Moradi, the Masters of Persian Music and Hossein Alizadeh & Djivan Gasparyan (their song, "Sari Gailin" mixes Persian, Armenian and even Azeri influences), standing in contrast to the modern pop/rock of groups like Arian Band (named for the ancient Aryans, after whom Iran was named), Barad and O-Hum (who's song "Darde Eshgh" features some awesome vocals and guitar). And yes, even women are represented. Parvin Javdan and Zohreh Bayat from the all-female Rozaneh ensemble perform a wonderful song, quoting from the beloved Sufi poet Hafez.

Folk and ethnic music is also represented, showing the traditions of rural Iran (which includes numerous minority groups like the Kurds, Armenians, Qashqai, Turkomen, Azeris, Baluchis, etc). The legendary Kamkar ensemble showcases the irregular metered percussion of Kurdistan on "Dekay Ambar, Dekay Auber". Haj Ghorban Soleimani, a bashkhi or bard from Khorasan, tells a story from Hazer Afsaneh accompanied by the dotar on "Zareni Hossain Yar". Chenghis Medhipour showcases the epic song traditions of the Azeris, and Din Mohammad Zangeshahi shows the folk art of Baluchistan, while another Shahram Nazeri (also Kurdish) leads the Dastan Ensemble in a performance of Sufi music. But one of the great high-lights of this CD comes from the Jahle band (descendant of freed black African slaves, now settled along Iran's coast), who perform a lullaby made popular by being played on BBC. Demmand for this song, which until now was unavailable, proved so great that World Music Network spend a great deal of time working with the BBC to release it. Exclusive to this CD, fans should be glad that we can now get our hands on it.

From the first notes of the Arian Band's pop song Afsoongar, to the haunting last echos of the (aptly named) Masters of Persian Music, this CD serves as a wonderful journey across the incredibly varied country of Iran. It is a window into a world few in the west get to see, and it's a tragedy that this CD is not sold in every book and music store across the nation. I STRONGLY recommend that anyone who is interested in seeing the TRUE face or Iran and/or the Middle East purchase this CD. It will greatly expand your mind, showing you the beauty, grandeur and majesty that is Persian culture. Even those who are already familar with Persian music will find this CD an incredibly worthwhile purchase, because of the inclusion of several unique or hard to find tracks (particularly "Lullaby" by the Jahle Band). So do yourself a favor and go out and buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner Book, maybe work up to something else later........2006-11-29

I bought this book for only $6 hoping to learn more about classical music. While not everything is not in here, it is still plenty to digest at one time. Also while there are probably newer and better CD releases the last several years, once again this is excellent for getting your feet wet. It has a two page list of composers it examines, some not so well known. It gives brief biographies of their lifes, giving an effective backdrop to the explanation of works afterward. In describing these works, not only do they give recommendations for the finer renditions of compositions, but also budget cd recommendations for those with economical concerns. I really enjoy this book and use it quite often.

How can anyone cover all of classical music and opera in just 465 pages, including an index? It can't be done with too much depth, but the Rough Guide team led by Jonathan Buckley has done its best, managing to achieve a reasonable amount of breadth. Of necessity, the entries are brief and the number of recordings examined extremely limited; some of these recommendations do seem odd. It's a wonder how any guide of this sort could fail to mention the Solti/Decca version of Wagner's Ring, or the classic Sir Neville Marriner-Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra reading of Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances; here, it is the exclusions that jump out. But the guide's inclusions are quite often on the mark. There is a slightly British bent to the discs, artists, and composers listed, but that should not be a problem for most listeners. As always, it's a good idea to consult more than one guidebook before investing heavily in a recorded music library. --Sarah Bryan Miller

What else is there to say... It has not steered me wrong once. The suggestions as to what recordings are the best of works that have been recorded dozens of times are particularly helpful. A healthy number of 20th century composers too!

    Book Description

    Introduction

Though few of them make much effort to entice a new audience to their product, the recording companies continue to pour out a flood of classical music. The catalogue of current classical CDs runs to more than two thousand tightly packed pages, and lists nearly three hundred composers before reaching the second letter of the alphabet. An average month sees some four hundred recordings added to the pile. THE ROUGH GUIDE to CLASSICAL MUSIC attempts to make sense of this overwhelming volume of music, giving you the information that's essential whether you're starting from the beginning or have already begun exploring.

As well as being a buyer's guide to CDs, this book is a who's who of classical music, ranging from Hildegard of Bingen, one of the great figures of twelfth-century European culture, to Michael Torke, born in Milwaukee in 1961. Of course we've had to be selective, both with the composers and with their output - Domenico Scarlatti, for example, was a fascinating musician, but no book of this scope could do justice to each of his five hundred keyboard sonatas. Gaetano Donizetti wrote more than seventy operas, but you wouldn't want to listen to all of them. We've gone for what we think are the best works by the most interesting composers, mixing some underrated people with the big names, and highlighting some we think you should keep an eye on.

When it comes to CDs the situation requires even greater ruthlessness. Beethoven may have written only nine symphonies, but there are more than one hundred versions of the fifth in the catalogue, and scores of recordings of all the others. Several of these CDs should never have been issued - they are there simply because any up-and-coming conductor has to make a Beethoven recording as a kind of calling card, regardless of any aptitude for the music. However, a fair proportion of the Beethoven CDs are worth listening to, because a piece of music as complex as a Beethoven symphony will bear as many different readings as a Shakespeare play.

Although there are recordings that stand head and shoulders above the competition, no performance can be described as definitive, which is one reason why we have often recommended more than one account of a work. Whereas all our first-choice CDs make persuasive cases for the music, some of the additional recommendations are included because they make provocative counter-arguments. Where price is a consideration, we've also listed a lower-cost alternative whenever appropriate - thus we might suggest a mid-price boxed set of symphonies as an alternative to buying them as full-price individual CDs. Finally, in many instances we've picked an outstanding pre-stereo performance as a complement to a modern recording.

These "historic" reissues are the one reliable growth area in the classical music industry, and their success is not due to mere nostalgia. There are some great musicians around today, but there's also a lot of hype in the business, with many soloists owing their success more to the way they look than to the way they play - and, conversely, many superlative musicians who remain obscure because they don't project the requisite glamour. It's in the area of orchestral music and opera that the situation is especially bad, notwithstanding the technically immaculate quality of many digital recordings. Orchestral musicians are now trained to a very high standard, but only a few of the top-class orchestras enjoy the sort of long-term relationship with an individual conductor that can mould a distinctive identity. The same goes for opera companies, which used to have a stable core of singers and musicians working under the same conductor for years. Now there's a system based on jet-setting stars, who might be performing in London one night, New York the next, then in the recording studio for a few days to record something with people they hadn't met until the day the session started. You don't necessarily get a good football team by paying millions for a miscellaneous batch of top-flight players, and you don't build a good musical team that way either.

Musically, then, new is not always best. And don't assume that a recording made more than thirty years ago will sound terrible. Sound quality won't match that of digital CDs, but you'll be surprised at how good it can be - indeed, many people prefer the warmth of the old analogue sound to the often chilly precision produced by modern studios. (We've warned you if surface noise or tinny quality might be a hindrance to enjoyment.) In short, you'll be missing a lot if you insist on hi-tech - few recent releases can match Vladimir Horowitz's 1940 account of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, for instance, or Josef Hofmann's versions of the Chopin piano concertos from the 1930s.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Bios.......2005-03-11

I'll start off by saying that I'm not rating this book based on it's CD recommendations. My knowledge of all the recorded versions of any particular composition is not vast enough for that critique.

However the biographies are excellent; Well written and intriguing within the concise bounds required by this format.
If fact you will probably read about and become interested in many composers that you know little about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent NearPerfect Music Guide!.......2004-11-29

Truly, all the ROUGH GUIDES are top notch! This beautifully designed book will give you not only the basic pieces of just about every leading composer through the present, but also picks the top CD performances. Plus there are short bios on leading players and conductors. Did you know there is a collection of about 94 CD's by Toscanini, for example, (who, I did not know, lived in to his mid 90's). Browsing thru, say, Mozart on Beethoven, you get a terrific rundown on their top pieces and performances, plus bios and place in musical history. Plus there are many relative unknowns who I never knew! One very small criticism..Where are the 2 American composers, Edward MacDowell, and Amy Beach? (Maybe in later editions. Mine is dated 1994).In sum, a very fine book, even with these monir flaws!

3 out of 5 stars More helpful with composers than recordings.......2004-08-30

I bought the Rough Guide to Classical Music a couple years back to complement the other reference guides in my library. Having used it a couple years, I can say it provides nice summaries of composers and the compostions they rate. It also provides some fascinating features -- such as "What Is a Fugue?" and "Sonata and Sonata Form" -- that provide information the average collector will find helpful if he/she is not a practicing musician.

However, the main reason people buy these books is to get information on CDs they intend to purchase or add to their collection. I use this one and a half-dozen others as reference for that purpose.

On that score, I find the Rough Guide is an average book. I say this because the authors tend to give highest grades to the most oft-recommended CD of a particular piece of music and never -- never -- go off the beaten track to recommend anything outside the standard circle of well known conductors, performers and orchestras.

This tells me the authors of this book do not have a very comprehensive working relationship with classical CDs, even though they have written a book recommending same! This pattern becomes almost predicatable after while. In fact, this book can become more conservative than the ultraconservative American Record Guide in making recommendations on core repertoire.

For the Beethoven Violin Concerto -- which every violinist in history has taken a shot or two at -- this book goes back to World War II to recommend the Menhiun-Furtwangler recording and recommends a Heifitz recording on an old Music and Arts CD. To give balance to current performers, they also include a recommendation for the more recent Hilary Hahn recording.

I've heard all these recordings and Heifitz could not be more different than Hahn. Most collectors that enjoy one would not care for the other, although they might buy it to build their collection. But Heifitz, who jets through the concerto in less than 40 minutes, is a far cry from the romanticism of Hahn and Menhuin.

On the basis of this kind of thing happening over and over again in these pages, I'd say the Rough Guide authors either haven't heard all the recordings out there or they consciously make an effort to satisfy old timers and DDD fanatics simultaneously. Nothing wrong with trying to keep everyone happy, I suppose, although to me it seems like a lack of vision.

Furthermore, the book does not include recordings by a number of composers of note. Bernhard Henrik Crusell, a Scandanaivan composer whose three clarinet concertos have been recorded a half-dozen times in recent years, is not represented in the book. Neither is Franz Krommer, a Moravian Romantic era composer that published several symphonies and a number of popular and often recorded woodwind works.

Meanwhile, composers Carol Gesauldo and Morton Feldman found their way into this book. Also included are Guillame de Machaut, Elisabeth Luytens and Perotin. A living composer named Sofia Gubaidulina gets as many pages in this book as Carl Maria von Weber and more than Einojuhani Rautavarra, the most popular of all living composers.

For these reasons, no serious collector could consider the Rough Guide to Classical Music a core item in their library. I've been collecting books on 78, LP, tape and compact disk criticism going back to "Ewen's Musical Masterpieces", first published in 1954 (Ewen also recommended the Heifitz recording in Beethoven, the old RCA Victor ICT 1010).

I find this book helpful on occasion but, more often that not, it pretends to be a lot more thorough than it is.

4 out of 5 stars An overall helpful book..........2004-07-15

This book I found to be an overall quick and easy reference book, there are of course more explicit and more informative books around, but this book is great for an overall view of a composer's life and famous works. But there are several things that I must attend to in this review and that would be: I believe it would be really nice if instead of alphabetical order they would have catagorized them into their eras, but of course this would most likely be only appeasing to me or some other person who knows what eras they are in, so if you don't know about eras etc. then this should not discourage you in any way. I also was rather disappointed that the author yeilded into only putting in their most famous works, which is fine and all, it just even more obscures some of the composer's works of equal quality that have been placed in the back row. (ex: Mozart's string quintets are very famous and I grant, excellent, but why is it that no one ever hears his string Duos and trios which are of equal greatness?) Again, nothing to discourage you from buying this book. But overall this book is a great reference source for novices and experts alike.

As with any choice there are going to be works missing, performances you love which aren't here, and odd selections. This book contains all of those but still gives a good balance of classic performances, contemporay pieces and a range of prices. For example, Bach is represented by period performances and Glen Gould. There are recomendations for music from the earliest Western Traditions to contempory composers. Conductors and orchestras from around the world are listed in a sensible way. In addition there are notes on the composers and pieces recommended which are informative. It is an excellent way to start a collection or to suppliment an already existing one. The discs are available in Europe and North America (I buy through Amazon!). There is an equally good Rough Guide to Opera CDs.

              Book Description

This work determines the processes that strengthen hostility between opposing groups and identifies those who are willing to act in order to change these situations. The backdrop of the Arab-Israeli conflict is used to demonstrate how collective identities are shaped by membership in ethnic and religious groups, and how these identities influence attitudes and behavior. It examines political attitudes, hatred of "others," and willingness to assume responsibility for the various social issues of this conflict. This book takes a fresh approach to the Arab-Israeli conflict by relating it to three distinct societies: Jews, Arabs, and Palestinians. Though it deals with conflict, this assessment is optimistic in the sense that it shows that bridges can be built and maintained among these groups. These bridges are still small and fragile, but may be the structures upon which more elaborate relationships may be developed.

Bridge Over Troubled Water tells the true story about the experience of a fifteen-year-old pregnant teenager and how she was able to overcome that traumatic experience as well as many other obstacles to succeed in completing her sophomore year on time and to graduate from high school with no setbacks. This story is a testimonial and a demonstration to teenagers who find themselves in similar situations that they can still lead successful lives and accomplish the goals which they have set for themselves.

"Dear God, don't let me be pregnant." The opening pleas of Ethylene Crenshaw's book "Bridge over Troubled Water" bring home the fear and despair of teenage pregnancy. She takes the reader on a journey through her own experiences as a pregnant teenager, through her thoughts and her broken dreams. And, yet, Crenshaw also carries a message of hope. This book is one that can and should be read with your teenaged daughter. It dispels the locker room myths surrounding sex and pregnancy, and lets girls know that sex not only doesn't equal love, but that it has consequences as well.

                              Book Description

The popularity of wireless networking has grown exponentially over the past few years, despite a general downward trend in the telecommunications industry. More and more computers and users worldwide communicate via radio waves every day, cutting the tethers of the cabled network both at home and at work.

Wireless technology changes not only the way we talk to our devices, but also what we ask them to do. With greater flexibility, broader range, and increased mobility, wireless networks let us live, work, and think differently. Wireless networks also open up a vast range of tasty new hack possibilities, from fine-tuning network frequencies to hot-rodding handhelds.

The second edition of Wireless Hacks, co-authored by Rob Flickenger and Roger Weeks, brings readers more of the practical tips and tricks that made the first edition a runaway hit, selling nearly 30,000 copies. Completely revised and updated, this version includes over 30 brand new hacks, major overhauls of over 30 more, and timely adjustments and touchups to dozens of other hacks introduced in the first edition. From passive network scanning to aligning long-distance antennas, beefing up wireless network security, and beyond, Wireless Hacks answers real-life networking needs with direct solutions.

Flickenger and Weeks both have extensive experience in systems and network administration, and share a passion for making wireless more broadly available. The authors include detailed coverage for important new changes in specifications and in hardware and software, and they delve deep into cellular and Bluetooth technologies.

Whether you need your wireless network to extend to the edge of your desk, fit into your backpack, or cross county lines, the proven techniques in Wireless Hacks will show you how to get the coverage and functionality you're looking for.

This book is about getting the most out of your wireless networking hardware and software. In this book, you will find practical techniques for extending range, increasing throughput, managing wireless resources, and generally making your wireless networking vision a reality. Remember that reality is what you can get away with, and wireless hackers have found that they can get away with quite a lot using surprisingly little. This book will show you some of the best bits of their collected experience. You can browse this book since each hack stands on its own. The following details the table of contents:

Chapter 1, Bluetooth, Mobile Phones, and GPS - The last couple years have brought hundreds of millions of tiny battery-powered wireless devices to market. Some will get you an Internet connection just about anywhere with mobile phone service, while others keep your devices connected to the "last 10 feet," and some cover the whole globe. This chapter demonstrates some uses for these technologies, which will keep your devices and yourself connected, without wires.

Chapter 2, Network Discovery and Monitoring - This chapter will give you the tools you need to detect the presence of wireless networks, coordinate spectrum usage to avoid interference, and visualize network performance. It also covers a number of advanced data-monitoring techniques to pinpoint networking issues and even get an idea of your users' online habits.

Chapter 3, Wireless Security - This chapter explores the current standards for securing wireless networks and suggests several strong methods for protecting yourself and your wireless users from abuse.

Chapter 4, Hardware Hacks - This extensive chapter tells you how to push wireless hardware to the limits, extending range and increasing performance and efficiency. It presents a large collection of components, along with sources and recommendations on how best to use them.

Chapter 5, Software Hacks - There would be no such thing as wireless networks without software, which ranges from the firmware that powers wireless cards and routers to the drivers required for those cards, up to general-purpose operating systems that can be used to build your own wireless access point, router, and firewall. This chapter covers all these topics.

Chapter 6, Do-It-Yourself Antennas - This chapter presents several home-brew designs for wireless networking made by contributors from all over the world. These are practical, tested designs that can significantly extend the range of your wireless network.

Chapter 7, Wireless Network Design - This chapter is a collection of techniques to help simplify the job of building wireless networks that cover the area you require.

Appendix A, Wireless Standards - This appendix will give you a good idea of what problems each wireless technology is designed to solve, their relative strengths and weaknesses, and how to make the best possible use of each to fulfill your communication needs.

Appendix B, Wireless Hardware Guide - This appendix provides a comprehensive list of wireless equipment retailers.

This second edition was published in November 2005, and this edition is almost a complete rewrite of the first edition published in 2003. Thus all lists of hacks prior to November 2005 are invalid for this second edition.

They continue by covering software hacks in detail. Then, the authors present several homebrew designs for wireless networking made by contributors from all over the world. Finally, they present a collection of techniques to help simplify the job of building wireless networks that cover the area you require.

In this most excellent book, you will find practical techniques for extending range , increasing throughput, managing wireless resources, and generally making your wireless networking vision a reality. As others have suggested, it really is not about hacks. Actually its the computer jargon, that keeps varying time to time. There really is a very thin line between hacks and cracks. One suggestion, "The book's title could have been "Wireless tips/hacks for Geeks". Bug again for Geeks, the current title should be fine(endless loop).
This really is a great book, a lot of information consolidated most of the obvious technical part removed and thorow work/research done on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best around.......2006-04-22

Wireless Hacks is one of the best, most succinct books on all things wireless that I have come across. I was expecting the standard "how to set up and secure a wireless access point" fare, and while you do get some of that, you get so much more as well. The authors really do a good job covering everything wireless. From BlueTooth technology, to standard WiFi, to hacking routers, to creating your own antennas, this is a great book for anyone interested in wireless technology.

Like the other "Hacks" books from O'Reilly, this book contains 100 different things you can do to get more out of your wireless devices. The book begins with a good section on BlueTooth technology. If you've got a new cell phone, chances are you have BlueTooth. The authors show you how to do a lot of creative things-from simply connecting your phone to your computer, to showing a slide show of photographs.

The section on 802.11x hacks is so much more than how to secure a network. The authors show you how to detect wireless networks, how to analyze and watch network traffic, and even build your own access point. One of my favorite hacks involves turning a Linksys WRT54G wireless router into a remote control car-all over 802.11b.

In the last section of the book, the authors concentrate on creating effective wireless networks-big or small. Examples are provided for creating a network for a single house, as well as how to create a network for a whole city.

This is a fascinating book, with examples provided for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms. This book is a must have for wireless network enthusiasts.

For the reviewer that said there weren't many hacks in this book, I have no idea what they are talking about. If you play with wireless devices in your spare time and you want to find new toys you can play with, or want to build toys of your own, this is the perfect guide to turn to! With 100 different ideas and tips, for any wireless junkie that likes to take things apart, put things back together, and play with the latest technology, this book is for you!!!
