Book Description

Robert Shaw is considered to be the most influential choral conductor in American history. This is the first collection of his letters and notes about music ever published—at another time, it is the book Shaw would have written himself.
The letters are an invigorating mix of music history and analysis, philosophy, inspiration, and practical advice. Shaw examines technique, but only as a means to an end—he moves beyond that, delving into the essence of what music is and what it has to say to us. The heart of the book is composed of Shaw’s previously unpublished notes on fifteen major choral works, ranging from Bach’s B Minor Mass to Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms.
Often inspiring and sometime hilarious, these writings reveal the full breadth of Shaw’s knowledge, intensity, and humor.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Shaw - rehearsal genius.......2007-05-12

The book is an invaluable collection of Mr. Shaw's excellent rehearsal techniques, including his "building block" approach to learning new music. It's pedagogically sound. Another interesting section recounts his letters to his choirs about poor rehearsal attendance, tardiness, unexcused absences, etc. It was so gratifying to find out that the greatest choir director of the 20th century had many unfaithful attenders. Several of his Atlanta Symphony Chorus members failed to attend a full concert with the orchestra, in order to hear Pavarotti sing the same night!!! Shaw was furious. Every choir director should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Must Buy.......2007-02-14

This book is a must buy, if for nothing else, than for his analysis of some famous pieces. His analysis of the War Requiem is nothing short of awe inspiring. This man was one in a billion in terms of his thought process of music, and this book is a road map to greatness in choral conducting.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-01-30

If you are at all serious about being a choral director, this book is a must. If you work with amateur choruses or school groups, the opening chapters will serve as a reminder that you are not alone in your experiences; they are universal. The later chapters give great insight to Shaw's musical thinking and the care with which he prepares his work. My only regret is that I did not run across this book sooner in my career.

What an inspiring book. This man did it all and was successful at it. I recommend this to all future and current teachers looking at teaching music of any kind. Rehearsal techniques, great stories, letters, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Belatedly Fascinating Picture of Choral Genius: Robert Shaw.......2005-06-06

Sitting glued to radios-later to TV's, we loved the distinctive sounds of early Fred Waring Glee Club; Before we heard any name of their Creator, Robert Shaw. Lots of us sang Waring versions of Christmas Carols; Battle Hymn of the Republic; Onward Christian Soldiers; Dry Bones; surely, Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, not-knowing who created crazy-looking phonetic syllables! We waited until mid-1950's to become aware of Robert Shaw's Collegiate Chorale and its successor the Robert Shaw Chorale. Most of us first heard early RCA records of JOY To The WORLD; A Treasury of EASTER SONGS (with young! picture of RS)++Christmas Hymns & Carols; followed by DEEP RIVER and Spirituals in 1957.

Professors Blocker & Page paint vivid pictures of early years of Robert Shaw! Moving on to Chapter 2- THOUGHTS ON MUSIC, SINGING, REAHEARSAL, PERFORMANCE...we're introduced to his fascinating Choral Notes from 1970 to 1996. My favorite section is titled QUIET SINGING and COUNT-SINGING. Anyone lucky enough to sing in his rehearsals was exposed to quiet-singing (above a whisper)-- My good fortune began in Westminster Choral Workshops of 1973, 75, 77, again in 1986 Saratoga Springs, Carmina Burana & Brahms' German Requiem.

When Blocker named Shaw's absolute minimum essentials include, (as Caroline spoke to me, He has perfect rhythm; He knows the Time night or day to the minute with no clocks!) "Music is Order in Sound and Time!" Only God knows how many unique singing souls he introduced to permanent essentials ingrained in their music!

I must delve into his longest, most valued Chapter of CONDUCTING THE MASTERPIECES! Naturally he starts with Bach's B-Minor Mass and Bach's Passions of St. John and St. Matthew... Added to the longer Masterpieces we find Rachmaninoff's "The Bells" followed by "Liebeslied, Schicksalslied, Nanie" by Brahms! It seems as if anyone writing about Shaw, "Blocker could not escape temptation to include Gustav Mahler, Mozart's Mass in C Minor, Hymns and Christmas Carols, Verdi's Requiem or Poulenc's Stabat Mater!

In PREACHING THE GOSPEL(OF THE ARTS) we are graciously gifted by complete texts of 7 speeches given to Memorial Church of Harvard, Choral Societies, Atlanta Emory Lectures. I was deeply shocked to see exact text of his NPR Celebration of Bach's 200th anniversary in 1984, "Worship and the Fine Arts!"

In Chap V-CELEBRATIONS OF THE RITUALS OF LIFE we see an intimate 7 page Eulogy for Peter Harrower's Memorial Service. He was one of the great Bass-Baritones of Shaw's Atlanta Symphony Choral Performances and Premier vocal coach of GA State Music Students including my wife, Barbara in the mid-1960s!

After first perusing this lengthy biography in B/N one fine day, it took several readings for it to compare favorably with early-"Dear People." I am genuinely impressed to discover this closely intimate account, including Sir Robert's love for sung, written, and even, The Divinely Spoken Word from St. John, Chapter 1... Book Description

Computer games are one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving media of our time. Revenues from console and computer games have now overtaken those from Hollywood movies; and online gaming is one of the fastest-growing areas of the internet. Games are no longer just kids' stuff: the majority of players are now adults, and the market is constantly broadening. The visual style of games has become increasingly sophisticated, and the complexities of game-play are ever more challenging. Meanwhile, the iconography and generic forms of games are increasingly influencing a whole range of other media, from films and television to books and toys. This book provides a systematic, comprehensive introduction to the analysis of computer and video games. It introduces key concepts and approaches drawn from literary, film and media theory, as well as from computer games studies, in an accessible and concrete manner; and it tests their use and relevance by applying them to a small but representative selection of role-playing and action-adventure games. It combines methods of textual analysis and audience research, showing how the combination of such methods can give a more complete picture of these playable texts and the fan cultures they generate. Clearly written and engaging, it will be a key text for students in the field and for all those with an interest in taking games seriously.

By volume, topics covered, and the authority of the authors, nothing documents Redmond's new operating system quite like Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

The kit consists of seven books and a well-organized CD-ROM. Each of the books contains comprehensive information about the respective area that it covers, be it TCP/IP or distributed systems. The kit not only includes essential information but also contains detail and background information for its many subjects in great depth. For example, the book that covers Internet Information Server includes instructions on developing client/server and multitier applications. The Windows 2000 TCP/IP Core Networking Guide also has an outstanding introduction to the core tenets of TCP/IP.

Systems administration manuals have come a long way in terms of usability and presentation, but they are still not the easiest to use. Many books (including some from Microsoft) of lesser scope provide information in a format that's easier to follow, and that includes screen shots and step-by-step instructions. The volumes in this kit do not provide as many images, illustrations, or diagrams as other volumes, but the level of technical detail is unbeatable.

Many of the volumes could stand alone. The Distributed Systems Guide, which is over 1,600 pages long, contains complete coverage of Active Directory, PKI, Distributed File System, PKI, and much more.

Why the set includes the Internet Explorer 5 Resource Kit is unclear--it stands apart from the others in that it covers an application rather than a core piece of the OS.

If you have room in your budget and the need for the most comprehensive and authoritative guide available on Windows 2000 Server, this is it. --John Keogh

5 out of 5 stars For Microsoft gurus, this is a must-have reference!.......2002-07-10

I hate the size of this Resource Kit, the biggest ResKit published by Microsoft so far. But the material more than justifies its size - every thing you need to know about the Windows 2000 platform and Active Directory is in here. I keep coming back to this one from time to time to refer to a lot of stuff that I would've otherwise overlooked.

If you hate the idea of carrying or shelving this ResKit, the whole thing's available on the CD as well. I prefer to read long artciles/topics on paper - the CD servers as a Field Reference. Has plenty of tools too - some of them available for free on the Microsoft web site.

This Resource Kit is the best investment in a Microsoft Press book i've ever made.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Practical.......2002-05-24

Don't buy this set of books if you are interested in learning how to manage a 2000 server. It is very theoretical and devoid of practical advice. There are much better resources available if you are looking for a "how to" or reference book.

            4 out of 5 stars A mountain of knowledge.......2002-02-20

This set of books contains everything one needs to know as a system administrator working in a Windows 2000 Domain. I've needed to refer to each book SEVERAL times to take care of one problem or another.

My only complaint, now, is that it is outdated by design (in other words, it is printed). The withholding of a star may be a statement about Microsoft and their tendency to release buggy software, but as service pack after service pack has been released, I find myself trusting this information less and less. I always read from the reference books and then double check online to make sure it hasn't changed, as that has happened on occassion.

If you are getting these books, I would advise you to do the same. Microsoft's support page should be bookmarked in your browser.

4 out of 5 stars Scale model of Microsoft market share........2001-11-04

This set of books is enormous. The sheer quantity of information that Microsoft has made available through this kit is almost overwhelming. If there is anything that you want to know about Windows 2000 server (regular, advanced and datacenter) you WILL find it here. An outstanding reference for system administrators and would be MCSA/MCSEs, this kit gives you incredible detail about the key features of Active Directory, Windows 2000 DNS, and migration planning. The only major draw back to the kit is its haphazard cross-referencing between the books within the set. Expect to do a lot of book switching and index checking. Some of the books also expect that you have read the Windows Help file on your server. This set has made a giant leap in readability. The clean layout and clear writing style keeps you attentive without loading "fluff" into its explanations.

5 out of 5 stars If you are an IT pro in a W2K shop, you MUST HAVE this.......2001-09-07

Print this out and take it to your boss. The IT department has to buy a this expensive set of books if you are running Windows 2000 Server. The on-line help is for users. This is the documentation set for professionals. There are the books MS no longer includes with the software. You also need this as a reference if you expect to get a W2K MCSE or if you make a living consulting to W2K shops. This should be a total no brainer. You might be able to administer one or two low usage servers without these, but if you intend to implement the powerful new features of W2K (that's what you paid all that money to MS for, isn't it?) then you simply can't get by without these. While a good deal of this info can be obtained from TechNet or Knowledgebase, you just can't highlight and dogear those resources for future reference. And even those resources are incomplete compared to this.
I'm giving this 5 stars not because of outstanding performance on the part of Microsoft Press with these editions, but because of the absolute necessity of having them.

Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 is meant to act as an intermediary for communications among processing and storage systems from diverse vendors--think of it as a sort of Jimmy Carter for operating systems. Systems administrators charged with maintaining a multivendor environment know that the analogy to Middle East warring factions could, unfortunately, be taken a lot further. Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 Resource Kit exists to further the cause of Host Integration Server, providing a set of tools, utilities, and modifiable scripts you can use to make your heterogeneous systems get along as well as possible. Like any technical book and CD-ROM package, your opinion of this one will vary directly with its ability to solve your particular problems. Regardless, Host Integration Server users will want to have this kit on hand, both for its "just-in-case" value and its ability to inspire new thoughts about how to solve sticky integration problems.

Don't head to Microsoft's Web site, get the list of utilities on this book's companion CD-ROM, and base your decision to buy solely on that. This is the only printed documentation around on one of Microsoft's newest and least-known products, and the authors do quite a bit to explain how the server works, architecturally and procedurally. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000, explained for the system administrator who has to make it mediate among heterogeneous systems. The bulk of coverage (in text and in software) goes to SNA services, Component Object Model Transaction Integrator (COMTI), and Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ).

            Book Description

1 out of 5 stars Another waste of time from Microsoft.......2003-04-24

This resource kit is another waste of time by Microsoft. The book contains a lot of theory and duplicate information regarding Host Integration Server. The actual operation of HIS seems to be completely missing from the book. The majority of the explanations are either too short or absolutely useless for direction. In the end, this resource kit is extremely lacking in resources. I did notice that during the entire 1200+ pages, only 20 pages were dedicated to actually explaining how to use the software. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I suggest too download the latest HIS service pack, included in the services pack are the latest series of document about the application.
