Book Description

Henry Rollins is an artist whose legendary, no-holds-barred performances encompasses music, acting, and written and spoken word.  As Details magazine said when it named Rollins the 1994 Man of the Year: "through two decades of rage and discipline, Henry Rollins has transformed himself from an L.A. punk rocker into a universal soldier.  His enemies: slackers and hypocrites.  His mission: to steel your soul and rock your world."

Rollins was frontman for the seminal punk band Black Flag, and since 1987 has led the Rollins Band, whose ninth album, Come In and Burn, was just released by DreamWorks.

As a spoken-word artist, he regularly performs at colleges and theaters worldwide and has released eight spoken-word audiotapes.  His album Get in the Van won the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for 1995.  As an actor, he has appeared in The Chase, Johnny Mnemonic, Heat, and David Lynch's forthcoming film, Lost Highway.

From his days as front man for the band Black Flag and the current Rollins Band to his books and spoken-word audiotapes, Henry Rollins is the music, the attitude, and the voice that takes no prisoners.  In his twelve books, he has led us on a hallucinatory journey through the decades--and his mind--with poems, essays, short stories, diary entries, and rants that exist at "the frayed edges where reality ends and imagination begins" (Publishers Weekly).  For the first time, the best of his legendary, no-holds-barred writings are available.  This collection includes new photos and works from such seminal Rollins books as:

High Adventure in the Great Outdoors
Art to Choke Hearts
Bang!
Black Coffee Blues
Get in the Van
Do I Come Here Often?
Solipsist

5 out of 5 stars More great work from Rollins.......2006-02-27

If you like the work of Henry Rollins then you will most likely enjoy this, it's full of intense stories that will have you felling good, Also if your new to Rollins work you will understand why he has that unbalanced look in his eyes after reading this.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly depressing........2003-05-22

Perhaps they should have renamed it "Henry Rollins: His Depressingest Hits".

It's good, but it seems like the stories all lack the depth of many of this other books. They just leave you depressed and angsty. I'd get one of his other books instead (or before) this one.

5 out of 5 stars Social commentary by a social introvert........2003-04-29

I think when a person has seen enough of the twisted and crazy in the world, they need to have a blow off valve for all that pent up insanity. Henry Rollins has seemed to attract more madness to himself in less time than anyone I've ever seen. Obviously, with his great intelligence, he noted lots of the hypocrisy in the world, and with his unique view point, blessed us with his writing. This book is great, and makes any member of society take a good look at what they're killing themselves to become "the best" of. This book is required reading for anyone sick of the BS daily life makes us all live through. Henry Rollins is a genius. (And his band rules.)

5 out of 5 stars Rollins Is The Man.......2003-03-03

Henry Rollins' writing is limited. He doesn't have the diplomacy, the syntax, or the vocabulary of other reknowned American writers like Hawthorne, Twain, or even Ginsberg, but he makes up for it with his brutal sense of honesty, and a very plausible sense of reality. Most of his works represent the struggle of every day life, finding yourself, and dealing with the harshness of people he comes across. The Portable Henry Rollins is a great introduction to his writing style, and only makes me want to dive in deeper into his works, and his mind.

5 out of 5 stars Rollins rocks!.......2002-01-12

As a fan of the "audible" Rollins, I was very intrigued to see what the "written" Rollins was all about. This anthology of Rollins' work is just superb. The rawness, the humor, the darkness, the energy; all are hallmarks of Henry's style. If you've ever wanted to start to see what makes Henry tick, this is a great place to start. I can guarantee something will grab you and invade your soul.

      Book Description

The twentieth century introduced an unprecedented era of propaganda in all its forms, the fallout of new technologies of mass communication. Today, the prevalence of the word "propaganda" in ordinary discourse indicates the social pervasiveness of the phenomenon. The Holocaust in Nazi Germany was the result of a decade of systematic propaganda harnessing and intensifying a centuries-old anti-Semitic legacy. The massacre of over half a million Tutsis in Rwanda was instigated by radio propaganda. Support for the 1991 Gulf War, like the Great War of 1914-1918, has been attributed to the deliberate shaping of pubic opinion through false atrocity stories such as alleged incubator baby killings. Advertising and propaganda have long been associated and now the Internet opens entirely new avenues for propaganda.

Communication technologies have always served the interests of those controlling them. And as Jacques Ellul warned in 1980, any new technology enters into an already existing class system, and can be expected to develop in a way favourable to the dominant interests of that system. The merger of AOL and Time-Warner confirms that the future of the Internet will favour corporate interests. But the Internet has also opened up new possibilities for a politically effective counter-culture, as was demonstrated at the Seattle meeting of the World Trade Organization late in 1999.

This books aims to develop a sophisticated understanding of propaganda. It begins with a brief history of early western propaganda, introducing Ancient Greek classical theories of rhetoric and the art of persuasion and tracing developments through Christianity, the rise of the nation-state, World War I, Nazism and Communism. The core of the book, however, examines the ethical implications of various forms of persuasion. It looks at hate propaganda but also insidious elements of more generally acceptable communication such as advertising, public relations, and government information. It examines the case for legal controls and self-imposed restraints in the light of the freedom of expression guarantees provided in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but references are also made to situations in other countries.

Propaganda and the Ethics of Persuasion examines the art of persuasion but it also hopes to establish a "self-defense" resistance to propaganda.

5 out of 5 stars Very Important Book!.......2005-02-26

If America wishes to maintain a representative democracy, the information in this book is essential. All Americans have the liberty to make choices and the freedom to pursue happiness. But the very "happiness" and "freedom" that we seek to protect is often used to package and fuel propaganda. Ideas, like "the Patriot Act" may have an inherently enormous emotional appeal. They promise security, support our personal desires and even make us feel more like a member of a vast majority; ideas like this, however, have the ability to limit our freedom and our pursuit of happiness by harboring or promoting false agendas. In many ways, small influential groups have the ability to use propaganda to affect the beliefs or actions of majorities. Therefore, an understanding of propaganda is crucial if Americans wish to avoid tyrannous control of their government and restriction of their personal freedom.

Randal Marlin defines "propaganda" as "the organized attempt through communication to affect belief or action or inculcate attitudes in a large audience in ways that circumvent or suppress an individual's adequately informed, rational, reflective judgment" (22). It is critical to recognize that Marlin's definition supports the idea that the individual or group generating the propaganda creates a situation wherein its recipients are receptive to falsehoods. It is also important to recognize that within this definition, propaganda happens within information. I personally tend to believe that the reception of propaganda involves negotiation, and that the recipients of propaganda are not passive. From this perspective, it is the impairment of people's ability to negotiate that I find easier to examine than the propaganda itself. By understanding some of the techniques used in propaganda that inhibit this negotiation process, we can increase our ability to identify, dissect, and disarm them. I believe that Marlin's book educates its readers, thereby making them informed participants in this negotiation process.

Propaganda requires the attention of its target audience; without this attention, seduction opportunities cannot occur. Furthermore, there exists an overwhelmingly vast array of possible contexts and complementary channels that give rise and support to such seduction opportunities. Marlin says that "in a free society, the right of a person to choose what messages to see and hear will place limits on the right of others to communicate with him or her" (97). I agree with Marlin's statement generally, and recognize the tremendous skill that propagandists must use to choose complementary channels that support their efforts, all while holding the attention of their target audiences and supporting those audiences' interests. I also recognize the concentration of capital in American mass media industries (Marlin 253-255, 262, 283) as a frightening advancement in the efficiency of these processes.

The deregulation of American mass media industries have created a situation where there are literally thousands of information channels and venues, but a shrinking number of powerful hands that control the content therein. Our market's natural tendency toward concentration furiously drives companies toward oligopoly domination while effectively destroying media diversity. This concentration has ultimately resulted in the birth of conglomerates that exhibit an alarming control over every idea and message published through all mass media channels today.

Further indicative of this amalgamation tendency is the fact that, between 1982 and 2003, the number of news stations with news staff dropped from 98 percent to 67 percent, and half of the remaining staff members now work part time; indeed, fewer minds and bodies are required to cut-and-paste or regurgitate a single message than to create original, thought-provoking dialogue. The result is that while there may be many "channels" competing for the public's attention today, the information of many of these "channels" are cross-pollinated. It seems that if a propagandist wishes to capture the attention of his or her audience - and restrict the audiences' ability to verify information - he or she can do so easily, because the process is quickly becoming a matter of "one-stop propagation."

Marlin's discussion of the vast linguistic and nonverbal techniques used for propaganda leaves me with tremendous feelings of apprehension. I have great concern for my fellow Americans, our Bill of Rights, and the growing consolidation of our mass media industries. The more I grow to understand and identify each method employed by propagandists, the more I begin to realize the extent of the power of propaganda, and the damage that it causes. If America wishes to maintain a representative democracy, the information in this book is essential.

5 out of 5 stars White Wolf's answer to Call of Cthulhu.......2004-03-18

I am a fairly new inductee into the World of Darkness. I really enjoy modern settings and the last one I took part in was Call of Cthulhu. This book brought back memories! If you are into the modern setting then this book should be considered a must have. It goes into pretty good detail about the FBI, CIA, and NSA as well as covers a bit of info about less secretive groups like loval law enforcement and the Centers for Disease Control. Just reading this book gave me lots and LOTS of ideas for a campaign. In the back there is also included a fairly well written scenario which will give you a feel for how government agents might be run. As I said before, it has a very cool Cthulhuesque quality. The only thing I feel is lacking is a Sanity roll... but then again, this ain't Cthulhu.

4 out of 5 stars Conspiracy all over the world.......2001-11-13

Conspiracy all over the world. Project Twilight pictures govt. agencies, first of all FBI, NSA and CIA, hunting vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings. The organisations are described in detail. Who knows what? Whom is influenced by what? What factions do exist within the agencies? What are the goals of mortal hunters? How is their interaction? What equipment and tools do they use? Etc.
However, I would suppose most hunters don't know that much about supernaturals as mentioned in the book, unless they had obvious personal contact. They know something is strange and they are the ones to discover it. But who sane human believes in vampires? "Maybe they are aliens or have some new bio-technical inventions" would be first explanations.
If you always knew the true power of the world are not the governments but lies in hands behind the curtain, this book is what you want.

4 out of 5 stars Gearing up for Hunter: The Reckoning.......1999-02-11

Only one thing stands between this book and that fifth star: a good opening story. Otherwise the book reads like a conspiracy theorist's worst nightmare come true. All you need is this and the main rule book for Werewolf, Vampire, or Mage, and you're ready to make federal gov't sponsored hunters galore.

Included are neat new backgrounds(rank, favors, backers, and equipment) along with some new numina. Pyrokinesis looks like it'll be a blast(excuse the pun). Many gov't agencies are detailed, and you'd be surprised by how little they know about the supernatural. So this game is more about discovery than just killing monsters, although there's plenty of room for that too.

The World of Darkness's sixth standalone game Hunter:The Reckoning debuts this year, so this sourcebook may soon see a jump in demand. All wannabe gov't hunters out there(you know who you are)had better beat the rush and buy this book soon.

5 out of 5 stars A great White Wolf supplement for conspiracy theorists !!!.......1998-08-31

Project Twilight is great for anyone who wants to cross Vampire or Werewolf with government agencies. It gives in depth source for playing a para-intellegence agent, hunting the super natural. It contains information on the postion of the FBI, CDC, NSA & CIA within White Wolf's world of darkness...

In my opinion, a must for serious RPG'ers

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of the bunch.......2000-02-16

Once the Iron Curtain was lifted, several anthologies of contemporary Czech literature came out. One of the earliest, published in 1991, is this one published by New Rivers Press in Minnesota. It is an odd compilation simply because many of its 30-some contributors are not of Czech origin nor even write on Czech or European themes! Rather, BOT is from "the North American Czechoslovak community of writers" (whatever that is supposed to be). One good thing in the book is the intro by editor CJ Hribal who does a nice job summing up the eclectic and diverse character of the former Czechoslovakia and its' proud history. But why include a short story written by someone named L. Pappeno whose only claim to Czech/Slovak roots is a "Czech grandmother" (according to her contributor bio)especially when this story ("her first published story") has nothing to do with the former Czechoslovakia or its culture? There are several such perplexities through this volume penned by American natives who seemingly have no connection with anything European. I liked the obligatory piece, though, by Skvorecky and I did get my first sampling of the much-heralded Jaroslava Blazkova whose short story "Circe" combines the oft-used Czech elements of fantasy and realism. I liked the poignant "Ma's Dictionary" by Milan Kovacovic, too. There is likewise an obligatory piece by Skvorecky's wife, Zdena Salivora whose work seems to appear in any volume that his does. But why the short story "Texas Baby" by someone named Joyce Kehoe, described in the contrib's notes as "one quarter Czech?" There are three sets of B&W photos in BOT. In the first set, there are some great photos of a party in Moravia, former communist officials and mountain shots of what I presume are the Tatras. There is a great photo showing the grieving masses at the 1948 funeral of ex-President Edward Benes, but then by the third set of photos, all coherence vanishes. A picture of candymakers in Afghanistan, a Freemason, a Pakistani and a Swede having coffee and then some bleak shots of a deteriorating part of New York City...these photos make as much sense as "Texas Baby." On a more positive note, I liked the short pieces by Americans (?) Meehl and Martin and the two pieces by Pat Hampl, the longer one from her Romantic Education and the shorter from her later novel about Dvorak. As a big fan of Czech writer Iva Pekarkova, I was tickled to discover an excerpt from her 1994 novel Truck Stop Rainbows, which had not yet been published in English at the time of this anthology. The notes describe the excerpt as "coming from her forthcoming novel "Feathers and Wings" (a nice bit of trivia here for IP fans. This alone would be worth buying the book!) So if you're looking for an anthology of Czech writing, better look elsewhere. BOT has some good points--I appreciate the brevity of the selections and the first two sections of photos--but many of the works are simply nonsensical.

                    Book Description

PL/SQL, Oracle's programming language for stored procedures, delivers a world of possibilities for your database programs. PL/SQL supplements the standard relational database language, SQL, with a wide range of procedural features, including loops, IF-THEN statements, advanced data structures, and rich transactional control--all closely integrated with the Oracle database server. Knowing where to start with Oracle's procedural language is not always obvious to a newcomer, especially considering the language's feature set and the sheer size of the official documentation (not to mention Oracle's ever-increasing number of pre-built PL/SQL programs). But Learning Oracle PL/SQL offers the signposts and guidance you need to come up to speed on the language, delivered in a manageable number of pages while covering all the essentials. Topics include: Meticulously crafted with all-new examples downloadable from examples.oreilly.com/learnoracle, the book addresses language features available in all versions of Oracle, from Oracle7 to Oracle8i to Oracle9i. Learning Oracle PL/SQL was written by PL/SQL experts Bill Pribyl and Steven Feuerstein, whose easy-to-read style and attention to detail has made other O'Reilly books (such as the bestselling Oracle PL/SQL Programming) very popular among Oracle developers worldwide. Learning Oracle PL/SQL is meant for a wide range of target audiences, including both beginning programmers and those already experienced with other programming languages. Whether you are a new developer, a crossover programmer from another database system, or a new database administrator who needs to learn PL/SQL, this book will get you well on your way. It is the perfect introduction to Oracle PL/SQL Programming, also by Pribyl and Feuerstein.

1 out of 5 stars Not learning anything.......2006-05-24

This book is erroneously named. There's barely anything about PL/SQL. It's just a hodge-podge on oracle database server and oracle application server with minimum coverage on both.

PL/SQL is an Oracle proprietary language that is available in a variety of Oracle products, and is somewhat different and differently used in each Oracle product. If you want to learn Oracle database server PL/SQL get books by Alice Rischert or Scott Urman because their coverage of PL/SQL is well explained and in depth.

1 out of 5 stars Learning Oracle Maybe, But Not PL/SQL.......2003-09-14

I've been developing with Sybase and SQL Server for about 5 years with very limited experience with Oracle in that time. I purchased this book hoping to get up to speed on the differences between Oracle's PL/SQL and the Sybase/Microsoft T-SQL syntax. From the title this book seemed appropriate for the job. In short, while the book might be an adequate, albeit SLOW, introduction to Oracle, it covers very little actual PL/SQL.

If you are a programer/engineer/dba looking to "learn Oracle PL/SQL", interested in practical applications of such fundamental topics as constraints, foreign keys, indexes, joins, cursors, views, triggers, corelated subqueries and the like, look elsewhere. Don't take my word for it--take a peek at the index or table of contents and you'll see that the focus of this book has very little to do with PL/SQL.

4 out of 5 stars Overall very good.......2003-07-16

I've only read three chapters so far. It's been very good actually - I knew some SQL beforehand, although nothing very complicated, and it has been pretty easy for me to understand as well as very helpful for me in learning how to use PL/SQL. It has genuinely useful examples, and also provides tips as to how to perform unit testing on stored procedures and functions.

Another very useful thing the author does is list common and not-as-common mistakes that a programmer may make (which may not always result in errors or exceptions), hence possibly saving you the trouble of hours of debugging.

The only problem I've had with it is that he doesn't treat foreign keys as constraints. One of his sample column declarations is: "isbn VARCHAR2(100) FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES books (isbn)", but I kept getting an error until I changed it to: "isbn VARCHAR2(100), FOREIGN KEY (isbn) REFERENCES books (isbn)". I am not sure if this is a peculiarity of my installation (running Oracle 9i), but a check online reveals that many people also consider foreign keys a constraint.

Except for that problem, I would have given this book 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Fair Guide for Learning PL/SQL.......2003-04-23

I use a self-taught approach to learn new things like most people. And, like most people, I get frustrated with the lengthy superfluous nature of how-to books which throw everything in, including the kitchen sink. This book starts off well, and you can learn from it at a comfortably progressive pace, but it could use a larger scope. The author leaves a lot of code out of the book, though he does explain parts of it. In the end, the project he uses to illustrate PL/SQL becomes more complicated than it needs to be for a tutorial exercise. Still, I haven't seen anything better.

I've been a self taught Oracle PL/SQL developer for two years, so I was sceptical on reading a "Learning" book. After reading the first few chapters I was able to make improvements to my PL/SQL programs. It was definitely worth the time and money. The examples are well written and simple enough to make sense, but not too simple that they are "duh" type examples. I also liked the fact that the book explains how to set up and use Oracle/Apache to make PSP pages (Stored Procedures that generate web content). The PSP section makes up a good portion of the book that I didn't know was in it before I got it. With plenty of real-world experience tips, a section on tools and security, it will be a while before I have this ingrained and used on a daily basis. I defiantly got more than I was looking for.
