Great book for Pink Floyd lovers!.......2007-07-12
I recommend this book to all P.F. lovers, I collect all of there stuff from books, dvd's, cd's and whatever else is available, this book tells of all whose been involved with P.F. since they've been around, real interesting. Shine On!!
Encyclopedia for sure.......2007-01-13
At first I thought I wouldn't like it because it was definitely an encyclopia and I was expecting more of a book (regardless of its name) but the more I delved into it, the more I appreciated it. I bought another Pink Floyd book at the same time so it helped as a reference to that, too. My only complaint is how small the print is. Again I understand it is an encyclopia and know it would be thicker or bigger but think it would be worth it to have larger print. But it is very interesting to the Floyd fanatic like me. It has a lot more information than I expected.
Don't miss this one.......2007-01-08
This book is great. Things I never new before. Try it, you won't be dissapointed
Vernon Fitch certainly did no slacking with his research.......2007-01-06
This is THE most detailed and expansive resource for Pink Floyd info. That said, it's a true encyclopedia. Don't buy it expecting to read through it, because although its really cool to know specifically what guitar David played in WYWH, you'll find yourself skipping over the page to the next section.
Recommended.
Excellent.......2006-08-08
A wonderful guide, only small complaint I have is it's a tad hard to read quickly due to small print, but still overall a wonderful companion for a Pink Floyd fan
Book Description
Whether it's real or imaginary, every child has a secret space, and this remarkable book explores them all. For some it's a treehouse or a hidden spot beneath a bush; for others it's a private psychic refuge--a favorite book, or a dollhouse that becomes a stage for a young imagination. As the more than four dozen pieces collected here reveal, such spaces play a key role in a child's development and retain a symbolic power that resonates throughout our adult lives. No reader will put this book down without experiencing a rush of familiar memories and new insights into that bygone world.
Poet Diane Ackerman evokes that "parallel universe behind the eyes / which no one shared, or dare discover"; Paul Brodeur recalls the "fort" where he and his brother defended Cape Cod against invaders in World War II; Nobelist Wole Soyinka offers a poignant verse portrait of Africa's lost children; and Paul West remembers youthful encounters with his eccentric neighbors Edith and Osbert Sitwell. Elsewhere, Robert Coles summons up memories of his first years as a doctor and a wise young patient who taught him a lesson he has never forgotten, and Mary Galbraith shows how childhood loss is transformed into art in Ludwig Bemelmans's classic Madeline. And these are just a few of the gems in a treasury that includes Anne Frank, the controversial photographs of Sally Mann and the crudely eloquent drawings of young South African refugees, clinical case studies and profoundly personal imagery.
A perceptive, thought-provoking work for general readers, Secret Spaces of Childhood opens a wonderful window on the world of the young.

Captivating reflections on childhood & imagination.......2004-02-14
First, a bit about the book:
"Secret Spaces of Childhood" presents essays, poems, artwork, short stories, and memoirs dealing with the secret mental lives of children--how, as children, we all create or seek out secret places, and how memories of those spaces stay with us and shape us as adults. A "secret space" can be an actual physical place (a treehouse, a fort made of blankets, the woods behind school, etc.) or a mental escape (reading, play-acting, imaginary friendships). Children seek out these spaces for any number of reasons, from the usual motivators of curiosity and mental development, to more practical reasons of self-protection (such as escaping violence in the home or bullying at school). Some of the book's contributing authors tell their own stories of childhood, and some write about the idea of secret spaces and the importance of secret spaces from a more academic or theoretical standpoint. With such renowned contributors as novelists Joyce Carol Oates and Jim Harrison, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, poet Philip Levine, and children's author/artist Gerald McDermott, the book is a treasure-trove of thoughtful and thought-provoking pieces.
Next, my reaction:
I could not put this book down. I read it in one sitting. It was absolutely riveting! Each time I read one author's story, I was transported to my own childhood, and I thought about how my mental and physical world when I was a kid compared to the one described in the story or essay. So many memories (both happy and sad) returned to me as I read the book, thoughts that might never have been evoked without the gentle prompting of the pieces in this anthology.
One of the most important aspects of the book is its discussion (from many angles) of the inherent vulnerability of children. All over the world, children are subjected to domestic violence, war, random predatory assaults by strangers, poverty, and environmental destruction. This last point--the effects of commercial & industrial development on the physical landscape--was especially interesting to me. As adults we acquire views (pro or con) about saving, say...the rainforest and the Arctic wildlife refuge--views that are informed by politics, economics, and various other ideologies. But for a child, when a previously untouched landscape is developed, it makes the child's world smaller. It is one less place the child can explore, escape to, inhabit. The impact of a shrinking physical landscape on a child's life can be dramatic and dire--especially for children whose psychological or physical safety is at risk to begin with, in situations of abuse, neglect, war, or poverty.
It's bad enough to think of endangered species that are displaced or made extinct by human endeavors, but suddenly to realize that children are a kind of endangered species, too--one that we are failing to protect in so many ways--is sobering.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares about children, has children, knows children, or remembers being a child. Perhaps more importantly, for anyone who has forgotten what it was like to be a child. The selections are at turns funny, poignant, sad, light-hearted, and disturbing. This is a very important book, one whose ideas will stay with you long after you've finished reading.
Book Description
EastEnders is the ongoing saga of life in London’s East End. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this popular series, EastEnders takes a nostalgic look back over the life of Albert Square, revisiting all the classic moments, the characters we’ve grown to love, the romances and conflicts—all that has made EastEnders a favorite soap on both sides of the Atlantic. The book also takes us behind the scenes to see how the show is created, from the writing of the script to the filming.

Writing with attitude........2007-05-21
I am a long-time EastEnders fan. I asked for this book last Christmas. I am moderately satisfied with it. It is fun to look back at the early story lines. The frustration I have with this book is the angle of the writing. I don't know if it reflects British "tabloid" style or their version of soap-talk, but I didn't appreciate the tone of it. But all in all, it was as good a compilation of EastEnders memories as one can find. SPOILER ALERT! For those of us who are stuck in PBS limbo with 2001 episodes (in Minnesota), this book tells all up through 2004! I didn't want to know that stuff yet, but who could keep from reading to the end of the book?? A hint - some characters divorce, some marry, some die.
"The Book" On Everything Eastender.......2005-12-04
This coffee table style book includes plotlines, character biographies and almost eveything an EASTENDERS fan needs to know about the show, its characters and the actors/actresses who play them. But those of us here in America beware; we see episodes which are 4-5 years, so there are spoilers galore here.
I've been a fan of this long running Brit soap opera since the early 90's, when it began airing on my local PBS station (WHYY 12).
Unlike American soaps, this serial avoids over-the-top plots and absurd character developments. Rather, EASTENDERS chronicles the everyday lives and issues of everyday people living the fictious East London suburb of Walford.
It was a shame when WHYY cancelled airing the show. BBC America has also removed it from its listings. Fortunately for me and other Philly fans it is now being aired on Lehigh Valley PBS station WLVT 39.
Eastender fever.......2005-10-13
For those who want to know about the series this is the guide. It gives insight and allows you to catch up if you missed some episodes (as I did). Always loved the show (miss it) and this is a great read to remind me why.

GR8 to keep on hand for reference and Eastenders memorabilia isn't always so easy to find. I'm a HUGE Eastenders fan, so this was a GR8 addition to my collection:-)
Memories.......2004-11-04
This book is a nice way to get to know the characters for new E.E. fans. I however got it simply as a keepsake. I've been watching this show for the past fifteen years, and I'm hooked on the realness of Albert Square.
Background Info. Galore.......2003-10-25
This book is great for people who are just getting into EastEnders, or have watched it for a while and are trying to understand the nuances of Albert Square. You will certainly learn a lot of you're new to EastEnders. Also, for more information about EastEnders aside from the book you can go to www.saveeastenders.com. Enjoy!
For those who want the background..........2003-09-22
This is a very good book for those who need to understand this British soap's plot history. It's easy reading without giving away much. But those reviewers who think that Eastenders is "realistic" have obviously never lived in the East End of London. No one utters the "F word", hardly anyone smokes, and all the incestuous and adulterous relationships on the show make it appear as if there were a shortage of people in the UK. Everyone in Walford has shagged a cousin, a friend's wife, a neighbor, a son-in-law at least once. Realistic? Everyone knows each other's name, conflicts are resolved within 20 minutes and in the end, they're all one big happy family regardless of who slept with whom. Please! The plotlines are recycled every year or two.
Most working class people in London are decent and respectful. Many are educated, hard-working and especially among the immigrants, hold religion and education in high regard (unlike the show). Eastenders is deemed "realistic" because the characters aren't very glamorous, they speak terrible English and they're not wealthy, not college-educated. In fact, there's almost a disdain for the wealthy and the educated. Eastenders is not "better" than American soaps -- just more depressing and drab...and myopic.
The Low Down on England's # 1 Soap Opera.......2003-04-06
Another confession, I am addicted to Eastenders. Why oh why do the Brits make TV sooo much better than we do? What makes Eastenders so great? Well, the main characters aren't a bunch wealthy idiots, in some fictional city at some fictional mega-corporation with too much time on their hands, too much perfect make-up who spend all day making goo-goo eyes at one another. In England, this soap is about the working class, struggling with their jobs at the local pub, the laundrymat, local small gorcery store, the cafe, etc. The women look like REAL women, they use a huge variety of people, you know, like you find in the actual world? Don't get me wrong, there are some very attractive women (and men as well!) on Eastenders, but they don't get all the airtime.
This book is a super look at the past, which always plays a part in the current storyline, and helps new viewers understand some of the undercurrents between many of the characters.
You should check out the show and this great history.

Brilliant re-creation of 10 years of Grant Mitchell!.......2000-06-21
This book is a must-read for any fan of EastEnders. Author Kate Lock has true empathy, not only for Grant Mitchell but for all the other characters, and covers an amazing amount of ground. The only thing that was hard to get used to is that, because of the amount of time spanned, the non-Grant story lines are often summarized in a few paragraphs (e.g., events like Eddie Royle's murder and Michelle Fowler's decision to leave Walford). But this allows Lock to explore Grant, Phil, Sharon, Peggy, Kathy, and Tiffany in detail. The book also helped explain a few things that took place before I started watching the series. And because my PBS station in the Washington, D.C. area is about three years behind England in airing EastEnders, it's also possible to see where the show will go from here.
Now that Ross Kemp (Grant) has left the show, I hope Lock writes a sequel that ties things up -- I'd be the first to buy a copy!
If you love GRANT, you'll love this book!.......2000-02-23
The book was GREAT! It filled in many of the missing years I missed since GRANTS appearance on the show in the yearly 1990's. It takes you through all the significant events in his life which shapes his character. The author was true to the original text of this show, I was watching these episodes simaltaneosly with reading the novel. The writing was easy to follow. After reading this, I understand Grant's character. In many instances a viewer underestimates a character by there actions. In this book, Lock makes it apparent as to what Grant really feels and the nature of his actions. EXCELLENT, WELL DONE!

Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice is the most exhaustive overview of computer graphics techniques available. This textbook's 21 chapters cover graphics hardware, user interface software, rendering, and a host of other subjects. Assuming a solid background in computer science or a related field, Computer Graphicsgives example programs in C and provides exercises at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge of the material. The guide has over 100 beautiful, four-color photographs that illustrate important topics and algorithms, such as ray tracing and bump maps, and also inspire you to acquire the skills necessary to produce them. Encyclopedic in its coverage, the book has a good table of contents so that you can immediately turn to information on the z-Buffer algorithm or the chapter on animation.

Get Subcription to Siggraph Instead.......2006-07-06
Except for the chapters on raster algorithms, this book is just an extended bibliography. It has no material on texturing, for example, just a reference to the original paper on it. The math isn't that mature either, and the chapter on Perspective Projections is a pedagogical atrocity. Instead of buying this book, just go to your local univ. library and xerox the bibliography; then, lookup the articles on topics you're interested in.
good book.......2006-03-25
This book is a great book for general knowledge but all of the chapters that deal with talking about hardware is badly outdated. I got this book mostly for algorithms. I got much more then what I expected but most of everything I needed was there. Its a very good book for learning about line drawing, and polygon rasteration algorithms. Don't expect anything up to date like shaders though.
All-time classic.......2005-12-08
It's an all-time classic in computer graphics world. I bought this in 1997 and i could learn a lot from it. Though it hasn't been updated, one can gain all the fundamentals about CG.
A thorough coverage of the Computer Graphics world........2003-10-29
I have found this book to be _the_ most useful book in my line of work yet. I have been involved in computer graphics and software development for about 10 years, and this stands out as the ideal reference book.
Dont bother with this book if you just want source code. This book is all about explanation of the fundamentals of computer graphics. It is excellent in helping with design descisions and implementation strategies. Dont overlook this book if you are in anyway involved with the creation of a computer graphics application. The theory and algorithms described are old, but these are still used today - interestingly other reviewers seem to think this is bad, its not. It saves you spending months researching a method only to find it was already mentioned in this book, and the benefits and disadvantages are often written well with solid references.
In my opinion, in Computer Graphics, this is the Bible. The theories and algorithms assist in solving any problem you will find in the computer graphics world. It wont give you the code, but it will give you a solution.
Good book for 3D graphics.......2003-06-08
It is a book for the ones who like math, not for general programmers.
