Book Description
Extensively refined and updated, this new edition on conducting posits that conducting is atime-space art. It builds basic book techniques and includes additional band scores excerpts, placed in proximity with the classic repertoire. The text adds new baton timing techniques, and shows the relationships of time, speed, and motion. Key words and principles are highlighted in boldface or italics. This book states a new principle regarding gesture-speed as related to dynamics and phrasing. Drills to train the mind and hands simultaneously are presented. Complete diagrams, all time-beating patterns, and logical classification of expressive gestures are included. Offers manual-technique photo illustrations and a wealth of music examples that show the application of techniques. Features an extensive appendix that includes seating charts, language tables (scores), less common terms, and an outline of musical form to aid in score study. For musicians.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book after reading Rudolf's book.......2001-10-19
This book written by the legendary conducting teacher Elizabeth A.H. Green is very insightful and shows the beginnings of conducting from an old master like Malko.
I would reccommend buying the Max Rudolf text (used by most major conservatories and universities) for a more substantial basis. Then read this book and get a whole new perspective on several different baton techniques, rehearsal techniques, and conducting in general.
My only problem is that I don't think this book is worth the 68 dollars that the publisher is asking. First get the Rudolf (much thicker, more info for a basis, and cheaper) and get this book. It's great despite the price and somewhat limited explanation.
Clear, constructive, and essential.......1999-12-22
The Modern Conductor is an amazingly straight-forward book. Its directions are constructive and clear, and by following Elizabeth Green's suggested exercises and drills, you will develop great conducting "grammar." Arm motions become second-nature, and the aspiring conductor can focus instead on expressing musical ideas clearly to the orchestra.
I was Elizabeth Green's last student before she died in 1995. This book brought me to this wonderful musical sage. Nothing can replace the lessons I had with her as senior in high school, but the Modern Conductor encapsulates her method and primary teachings. It is an essential book for any conductor who wants to speak clearly with the hands.

Book Description
Recent advances in semiconductor technology have made it possible to fabricate microcavity structures in which both photon fields and electron-hole pairs (or excitons) are confined in a small volume comparable to their wavelength. The radiative properties of the electron-hole pairs and excitons are modified owing to the drastic change in the structure of the electromagnetic-field modes. This book is the first to give a comprehensive account of the theory of semiconductor cavity quantum electrodynamics for such systems in the weak-coupling and strong-coupling regimes. The important concepts are presented, together with relevant, recent experimental results.

The Physics of Semiconductors: With Applications to Optoelectronic Devices
ASIN: 0471415413 |
Book Description
A thorough examination of the present and future of semiconductor device technology
Engineers continue to develop new electronic semiconductor devices that are almost exponentially smaller, faster, and more efficient than their immediate predecessors. Theory of Modern Electronic Semiconductor Devices endeavors to provide an up-to-date, extended discussion of the most important emerging devices and trends in semiconductor technology, setting the pace for the next generation of the discipline's literature.
Kevin Brennan and April Brown focus on three increasingly important areas: telecommunications, quantum structures, and challenges and alternatives to CMOS technology. Specifically, the text examines the behavior of heterostructure devices for communications systems, quantum phenomena that appear in miniaturized structures and new nanoelectronic device types that exploit these effects, the challenges faced by continued miniaturization of CMOS devices, and futuristic alternatives. Device structures on the commercial and research levels analyzed in detail include:
* Heterostructure field effect transistors
* Bipolar and CMOS transistors
* Resonant tunneling diodes
* Real space transfer transistors
* Quantum dot cellular automata
* Single electron transistors
The book contains many homework exercises at the end of each chapter, and a solution manual can be obtained for instructors. Emphasizing the development of new technology, Theory of Modern Electronic Semiconductor Devices is an ideal companion to electrical and computer engineering graduate level courses and an essential reference for semiconductor device engineers.

Felicia dropped the ball with this one............2005-02-12
Testimony started off alright but it seemed like she just threw an ending together because she didn't know how to end the story. She definitely needs to write a sequel because there are too many loose ends characterwise and storywise. In the short interview she did in the back of the book she said that she's not writing a sequel but that if she was, she said that the only two characters she would want to explore are Roger and Margaret. What about Tyrone? Marcus? What exactly happened with Scottie? Does he get in over his head with his numbers running? What were the ramifications to the choir after Roger's secret was revealed? How did the church react? The remaining members of the choir? Who leads the choir now? What about Camille? What about the family of the woman from Roger's secret? What exactly did Margaret do to her boss before she left? What happened after she moved? There are so many unanswered questions and so many other storylines that could be explored. Overall, I was very disappointed with this book and will be donating my hardcover copy to my local library.
Testify: To tell of God's goodness ONE STAR.......2004-10-03
Testimony was the wrong title of this book it should have been call "confessions" I understand that christians aren't perfect, but testimony in christian circles explains to a lost and hopeless world that no matter what trouble faces you that God has a better way/solution because he is a redeeming God. The way this book ended didn't symbolize the hope that is born from a true testimony. It just laid out the "confessions" of some lost people who maybe didnt really know God, or maybe that was the author's intent.
Somebody oughta testify,,,.......2004-08-29
Wonderfully written and definally a page turner. There is a need for a sequel if only for Margarget's selfish behind and for the sake of the choir. Good job Felicia Mason.
Good Book!.......2004-07-29
I enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't wait to turn to the next page. This book really kept my attention. I really hope that a sequel comes out so I can see how the choir turns out when Roger finishes doing his time.
Testimony-boring.......2004-06-22
This was the most boring book that I have read. It had a very slow begining. It was a struggle to get through. For excitement, I recommend Church Folks, Tomorrow may never come, or, Singsation.
Book Description
Behind a french twist and sensible clothes, forty-year-old librarian Alison Sheffield hides an extravagant nature. But after last night, even her most proper attire can't disguise the signs-the pink cheeks, the extra-poufy hair, the bounce in her step. Alison Sheffield is in love.
The heart-palpitating, nausea-inducing, silly, inexplicable, absurd and pointless kind of love found in a romance novel. And for once in her life, what Alison needs to know she can't find in any reference book-she can only live it...
Customer Reviews:
Laugh out loud funny.......2007-08-09
I am a librarian and I loved it. It was, in lots of wonderful places, laugh out loud funny. Just like a Lucy show. Most of what was going on was not plausible at the superb Philadelphia Public Library, but that was not the point. The stereotypes were to give you the idea of the situation without a great deal of description and most librarians and library users could easily picture the characters and situations: staff interactions, Ed-the homeless patron and the exciting tidbits of everyday lives with books, reference questions and historic documents. Fiction does not have to meet anyone's standard of real to be good! I was tickled with the ending!
Love and lust at the library.......2007-08-07
This was a light, enjoyable book about a librarian who hasn't had sex in 15 years. Flitting around her periphery are Gordon, her handsome, womanizing boss, and Aleksi, the intriguing music conductor. The librarian gets sucked into a web of intrigue involving the music conductor's sudden interest in her library's collections and the conductor's wife study of poisons, supposedly for a novel she's writing.
The writing was a little weak and the pacing dragged a bit, but there was something charming and endearing about it, kooky as it was. I think most bibliophiles and library lovers would like it.
fun read.......2007-07-31
The ending surprised me. It was only partly because I felt rushed through the resolution and was left with so many questions about what happened next. Mostly it's because I expected the last line of the book to be..."and then I woke up." It's a quick, entertaining read, but pure fantasy.
Silly rather than funny.......2006-08-02
I thought the comedic episodes in the book were contrived and really not funny -- not at all the way a person would actually act. A decent read for a rainy afternoon.
Comic?.......2005-10-13
If I hadn't know that this was considered a comic novel, I certainly wouldn't have ascertained it by reading it. Granted, the protagonist makes the occasional witty comment, but the incidents in the book that I gather were supposed to be amusing just...weren't. The plot is pretty entertaining for about 7/8th of the book, but, as so often seems to happen, the ending was a dud. Can no one write a satisfying ending these days?

A Fine Addition to the 'Ravenloft' Campaign.......2000-10-21
This supplement to the Ravenloft campaign contains new character kits and game statistics for famous characters from the Ravenloft novels and the campaign book Domains of Dread.
Character kits include temporary conditions kits (a lot can happen to you out on the Demiplane of Dread) and adventuring kits for adoption by both existing and newly created characters. The kits consist of the following: Accursed, Cold One (a horrid aftermath of an undead encounter), Eremite (a wizard kit in which spells are brewed, not spoken), Fugitive, Ghostwatcher, the Green Hand (for priests of Osiris), Invisible (a rogue kit for agents of a secret order), Knight of the Shadows (a Ravenloft avenger class kit), Monster Hunter, Order of the Guardians (a monastic priest kit), Pistoleer, Psychic, Redeemed (for the once-evil character), and Spiritualist (a wizard kit).
Ravenloft heroes provided in this book illustrate some of the above character kits, and are of various good and neutral alignments; the author gives notes or "adventure hooks" on how to use each hero to create adventures, or just trouble, in your own campaign. The heroes are Brother Dominic, Ivan Dragonov the monster hunter, Gondegal (formerly the conqueror of Arabel in the Forgotten Realms campaign, now trapped in Ravenloft), Hermos the man-giant, Tara Kolyana the anchorite, the married spiritualists Hilda and Friedrich Kreutzer, Alanik Ray (Ravenloft's answer to Sherlock Holmes), the druid and dancer Larissa Snowmane, and the bitter, obsessed George Weathermay.
A fine addition to the Ravenloft campaign.

Better hands-on experience.......2006-02-07
You can find a lot of written stuff about RFID on the Internet for free. When you try playing with the real readers and tags and try to write your own RFID application it becomes clear that the practice is far behind the theory. A narrow (and inexpensive) shortcut for matching both is so called "PIRF" (platform independent radio frequency API). It is Java based and runs on both Windows and Linux platforms. The Lite version comes with some of TI developers Kits. There are some examples on how to use it and it works fine with a number of RFID readers (mostly TI ). Anyways, it is useful for you first clash with RFID to have it on your side.
discusses business issues; especially concerning privacy.......2005-12-28
As Sun gropes around for a next Big Thing in technology, this book tries to suggest that RFID might be it. The text is written at a management level of discussion. You do not need to be in IT hardware or software to benefit from the book's explanations.
The authors discuss the business implications of RFID deployment. Not just in the background of a supply chain, but also at a mass consumer level. To wit, there is a careful airing of the privacy issues that might arise if RFID tags can be used for tracking people and their purchases. And different countries have different policies towards these issues.
The conclusion is broadly positive for an eventual ubiquitous deployment. Prudently, the authors desist from suggesting when that might be.
Disappointing.......2005-07-30
The information presented in this book is very basic and entry level for those who have not a clue about RFID. All information are available almost every where on the internet, they just gathered them in a book form. The book explains stuff that every body knows when implementing a technical project, like selecting vendors, implementing projects, etc.
Recomended only for those who have never implemented a technical project (not even RFID).
RFID Field Guide .......2005-06-09
This is an excellent book for a company evaluating Radio Frequency Identification. It is a great reference for both a project manager or a person in the trenches, who is doing the implementation. Its focus is evenly balanced between the business issues and the technical issues.
The authors provide an overview of RFID, including historical context to set the stage. They follow through with key concepts about RFID and as well as EPC standards and dedicate most of the book towards implementation related issues, including project management and cost-benefit analysis. Each chapter begins with a set of questions which I found quite useful. The authors successfully tie the lessons learned from other deployments and the historical technology adoption trends into the book to make some interesting predictions about RFID as well as provide a road-map for the practitoners. The variety of examples sprinkled through out the book as well as the detailed case studies in the back of the book drive home the points.
This is a must-read for anyone thinking of evaluating or deploying RFID. The corresponding web-site (www.rfidfieldguide.com) offers a comprehensive list of RFID vendors as well as informatin on the basic and advanced RFID classes offered by the authors.
RFID Field Guide by Bhuptani & Moradpour.......2005-06-07
RFID Field Guide provides a focused analysis and resources for those who seek to capitalize on RFID-derived business opportunities. It is not an RFID primer nor a theoretical treatise as much as a guide for those who must act today on RFID. Of the 3 sections (I: What is; II: How to Deploy; III: Path Ahead), this book is focused on the latter two issues. Having worked with both authors, I can hear their Java & Jini market development experience throughout this book. These are not techies who are fascinated by technology. Rather, Moradpour and Bhuptani believe that RFID will benefit the business processes of some companies more than others. This book stems from their significant experience with platforms, technology innovation cycles and managing ecosystems. In this respect, I found the book unique from other books answering the "big" RFID questions.
Two criticisms of the book include the surprisingly non-quantitative nature of Chapter 7: Cost-Benefit Analysis. I expected the financial analysis behind some RFID deployments or even some good projections on the Wal-Mart mandate (although the case studies in the appendix are good). And, second, the authors frequently plug a URL for more information (www.rfidfieldguide.com). I found the site disappointingly bare of updated data or even links to other good sources. Perhaps they will add to this site in the near future.
As for this coming from a Sun-Prentice Hall Press, the analysis has almost nothing to do with Sun's technology. That said, at Sun we often say that RFID will fill more databases and storage than any human-keyed application (think Web URL strings and navigation data for everything connected to the Net).
In sum, Bhuptani and Moradpour have provided a seasoned structural analysis that can be used to drive real-world RFID deployments as well as challenge practitioners to envision and prepare for an "RFID-enabled world."
