Book Description
The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is an exhaustive reference to the treatment and progress of five different ethnic groups in the world's most visible industry. This book explores the various stereotypes propagated by television and the movies, as well as the breakthrough shows and films that shattered them. The text is divided into five sections: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans. Each section examines the representation of that particular ethnic group both on-screen and behind the camera. Presented in an easy-to-use, A-to-Z format, each comprehensive section offers an account detailing landmark films, movies, and television series relevant to that group; biographical entries covering key personalities; and topical entries covering key themes, genres, and fictional characters. An extensive index helps guide students, researchers, and general readers.

Encyclopedic!.......2003-04-10
Mary Jane Alexander, I am a New York film critic and enthusiast.
Film historian and authority James Robert Parish has done it again! "The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood," like all of Mr. Parish's well-regarded books, is comprehensive, thoroughly accurate and immensely readable. The sheer research is astounding and Mr. Parish uncovers the many fascinating tidbits that enliven film history. This is a book that is a must not only for every film and media library, but also for the general reader and film fan who wants is interested in the careers, lives and place in film history of the many ethnic stars who have thrilled us on screen. Bravo.

It's All in the Details.......2003-03-12
This is a wonderfully concise, detailed, and helpful general reference source for anyone researching ethnicity in the major films, television shows and performers of the past century. The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is easy to read, gives only the important highlights of each title and personality, and is well-indexed. The photographs in the book are nostalgic and illustrative. It's all in here -- the breakthroughs, the award winners, the important firsts, as well as other contributions that make Hollywood history and today's Hollywood unique.
Here is an "ABOUT TIME!" book.......2003-03-07
The movies have always help guide and shape moviegoers into an an understanding of who they are, where they're from, and where they're going. But much of the vast American public has been virtually invisible on the screen -- which is why this book is so valuable. Our overlooked ethnic groups -- African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans -- now have a wonderful reference source to help them understand who they are, where they're from, where they're going. This encyclopedia may be a bit pricey for average bookbuyers (where's the cheaper paperback edition?), but it will be criminal if every library in the country doesn't make it readily available.
authoritative and fascinating!.......2003-03-06
Jim Parish has outdone himself with this voluminous, impeccably researched work which is a concept long overdue in the publishing world. With the fine work of Allan Taylor, he has created a wonderful tome and a reference book which will be quite useful as well as enjoyable to read. Well worth the money! Cough up! You'll be happy you did.
Two Thumbs Up.......2003-02-12
By Hollywood, I expected the author to concentrate his efforts on films, which would have been fine in and of itself. But I was surprised (pleasantly) to see the detail into which he looks at the presentation of ethnic groups on television as well. This is the book that should be required reference material on every course in pop culture and in film studies as well. But don't let that scare you away from reading it. The book is written in a style that everyone can enjoy. It's one of those books once you pick up and start flipping through, you spend hours going through.

Excellent reference book for the student of World War Two.......2000-05-30
This work contains key names, battles, and machinery of the second world war. It gives the reader more than just "the basics". The biographical sketches of various characters of the war are informative. It gives the significance of various battles and weaponry as well. All in all, a very thorough work.
Book Description
Spanish food culture has evolved around strong regional cuisines and representative elements. This volume offers an overview of Spanish food and eating habits, taking into account a long and complex history, plus distinctive social, cultural, linguistic, geographic, political, and economic characteristics. Spain's location at the crossroads of Europe and North Africa has made it a gastronomic melting pot, with Arab influences and New World ingredients particularly noted. Readers will learn about the unique food culture in each region and how food practices and dishes in the Iberian Peninsula have developed over the centuries. Typical dishes and drinks, especially the Spanish wines, are described in context, with many accompanying recipes. Gastronomy in Spain has always been of utmost importance. Recently, the new Spanish gastronomy has taken center stage with internationally recognized chefs. Spaniards are shown to be extremely social eaters and drinkers who like to eat out. The everyday routine of eating out, such as at work and school, is clarified as well. Home cooking and the Spanish kitchen get special attention. Finally, although Spanish food has always been associated with the highly touted Mediterranean diet, health concerns about current eating trends are discussed. A timeline, a chronology, and illustrations round out the coverage.

Book Description
Coarse bread bathed in olive oil, then rubbed with tomato or garlic and salt, is common to all the Mediterranean cultures from France to Algeria, from Morocco to Greece. On the island of Majorca, it is known as pa amb oli, bread and oil. Tomás Graves takes this healthy peasant staple as a starting point to explore not only Mediterranean cooking, agriculture, and traditions but also the historical crosscurrents that have rescued this simple dish from disappearing along with a way of life that had remained essentially unchanged since Roman times.
Pa amb oli has come to symbolize for Majorcans all that is still honest and valid in the island, which became a major tourist destination in the 1960s and has been looking for its soul ever since. Bread and Oil celebrates the Majorcan character as reflected in its eating habits-simplicity, serenity, resourcefulness, and no qualms about getting one's hands oily.
"Bread and Oil . . . explores local traditions-the cooks and the restaurants, the bakers and sausage makers, wine-growers-and the provenance of its flour and bread, olives and olive oil, and the sensational vegetables and fruits."-Independent
Customer Reviews:
A Cultural Treat.......2006-03-01
Tomas Graves captures the cultural nuances of Mallorca in his narrative. The book is a translation of the original Catalan text and some linguistic intimacy with his native readers seems to disappear in English. As a frequent visitor to the island, his descriptions of local life and customs had a lot of relevance to me that could easily be lost on someone who has not been to Mallorca or only experienced the island's garish holiday life. As he describes his favorite rembrances of island life and his personal experiences expressed around the singular theme of bread and oil, the repetiveness of the theme is noticeable, but Graves seems to expect the reader to bear with him as he shares his thoughts and stories. I enjoyed his verbal pictures of Mallorca enough to buy his latest book, Tuning Up at Dawn, which is about his Mallorcan remembrances of life as a musician.

Book Description
These pun-studded fables by a popular science writer make complicated mathematical concepts accessible and fun. Twelve essays take a playful approach to mathematics, investigating the topology of a warm blanket, the odds of beating a superior tennis player, and how to distinguish between fact and fallacy. 1991 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Wading through puns to learn mathematics.......2002-11-17
Like the man who replaced Babe Ruth in the Yankee outfield, Ian Stewart is replacing a legend. When Martin Gardner "retired" as the editor of the Mathematical Games column of Scientific American it was eventually taken over by A. K. Dewdney and became Computer Recreations. Now written by Ian Stewart and called Mathematical Recreations, it is proving a worthy successor to the master. This book is a collection of twelve essays that explain serious mathematics using an unserious approach.
Set in a format that is best described as a chatty fable with puns included, the essays are certainly easy to read. However, as is usual with material containing a lot of puns, they do at times distract from the point of the essay. And those points are very good. The topology of a warm blanket, the odds of beating a tennis player that is better than you, logic and the construction of viruses are some of the topics covered in this book. All are presented as mathematical recreations with a minimum of computer involvement.
No one could possibly replace Martin Gardner. The best that can be done is to carve a successful, distinctive niche, which is what Ian Stewart has done.
Published in Journal of Recreational Mathematics, reprinted with permission.
Interesting but difficult.......2000-06-13
The book is a set of puzzles for the reader to solve, often involving a family of worms that have to split a blanket, cut a cheese, or some other commonplace task that nonetheless can take mathematics to solve in the required way. The author originally wrote the puzzles for the French edition of Scientific American. Some of the mathematics involved is the standard (but interesting) pop-math like games with infinity, but others get into topology and higher mathematics. While many of the puzzles are quite interesting, a few will lose the casual reader (even the well-informed casual reader.) Nevertheless, the pleasure of sticking it out for the good ones repays the pain.

Customer Reviews:
Gets you productive in OOo Writer!.......2007-03-10
Even though the book emphasizes a version of OOo before the current one, this book will get you proficient on the basics of Writer enough to get you off and running. The majority of the basic tasks you will do with a word processor are covered. I would recommend some previous experience with word processors and GUIs in general, but its not completely necessary. For someone switching over from Word to Open Office Writer, this book would more than meet your needs.
why do you need this book?.......2006-06-13
Writer is very easy to learn, especially if you have already been using some other word formatting package. A lot of care went into the design of Writer. So that you don't have to be a technical person in order to quickly learn it.
Which largely obviates the need for this book. Most of the material should be obvious to readers. Plus, the book's CD is superfluous, so long as you have Internet access. If you need a version of Writer to install on your computer, try going to openoffice.org and getting the latest version.
As an expert user, I still learned a lot.......2005-12-15
I have used OpenOffice.org since before it was called OpenOffice.org and I was surprised at how much I learned when I read this book. Most of the sections stand alone, which means that you can read the sections that interest you at the moment.
This book is very readable and accessible to beginners, and it contains content that some advanced users do not know. If you want to learn how to use styles, for example, this book is amazing. I also learned how to use fields to count my figures and other items. I consider this book a must have.
Excellent tool for advanced documentation.......2005-07-07
Jean Hollis did a good job of explaining how to do certain advanced things like styles and creating tables of contents.
I was really floundering until I got hold of this book.
I had always used Word but have not used it since.
I am a software developer and we are writing documentation for our software.
OpenOffice has been a good tool to have and this book was the key to understanding some really handy things.
It also covers some more mundane things like optimizations.
Well written, not enough examples........2005-05-16
O'Reilly made a great choice in picking up this previously self published book, "Taming OpenOffice.org Writer," and adding it to their collection. The author has a great style which is very easy to read.
For someone already familiar with word processing applications this book is a great help in showing how OpenOffice.org Writer accomplishes the task. It is written for someone who has experience in this type of software. As the subtitle is "The Free Alternative to Microsoft Word" you can imagine that much of the differences she shows are differences between Writer and Word.
The author does a great job at showing what can and cannot be done with OOo. She does not pretend that OOo Writer is perfect and is quick to show how to avoid some common pitfalls. The book is refreshing in that it does admit some weaknesses of the software, but also provides ways around the problems.
Because it is written for current users of word processors, it gives few examples of what can be done with the features. If you already know what you want to accomplish but are unsure of how it is done in Writer, then this book is a great help.
One of the strengths of OOo is "Styles." The author explained how to use styles in a very concise manner. The only thing lacking was a thorough explanation as to why someone should use styles. Other word processors handle formatting on a paragraph to paragraph, or word to word basis. OOo handles its formatting through styles, though you can do it the wrong way if you like. Styles are document wide formating and is much more powerful. But the book lacked the convincing paragraph or two as to why one should try to learn to use the Stylist.
There are lots of screen captures. Of which 183 are dialog boxes or menus. The other 8 show something other than those 2 items. Precisely two, and only two are an example of actual text being formated. The problem I have with this is if I go through the steps that are given in the book, I can, without fail, end up at the same dialog box as the book references. What would have been more to my liking would have been to see more examples of how you can use OOo to put text on a page.
The saving grace of this though is the one huge example that the book shows of what can be done with OOo...the entire book was written in and typeset from OOo Writer. Anything you see in the book can be done with the OOo Writer program. That is a testimony to the power of the tool. Because of this, the author goes into great detail as to how to manage large documents with Writer. This is something that OOo does very well. With its Stylist to help manage the uniform formatting and the Navigator to help manage a large document, OOo not only competes for MS Word's secretarial market, but WordPerfect's dominance in the legal and governmental fields.
I look forward to the release of OpenOffice.org 2.0. I hope that O'Reilly will work with the author to produce a new version of the book in line with the new version and features of the software. As well, I would like to see O'Reilly do a book on each of the components in the OpenOffice.org suite.
