Creative Insights are the Big Value.......2006-10-19
I liked this book quite a bit; not because it gave me step-by-step instructions on how to create music using digital technology, but more to the point because it didn't. Any book on music technology can become dated quite quickly, but when one concentrates instead on hearing a very wide variety of artists, producers, technologists and industry executives talk about how they *think*, then you have something that if not timeless is at least fresh and interesting for some time. Knowing how Todd Rundgren approaches producing or songwriting is way more valuable than knowing which button in ProTools does pitch correction.
Feels "dated" an no longer relevant to me...........2006-08-24
Honestly I'm surprised by most of the reviews I see here giving this book 5 stars. Most of the people in the book, I personally don't hold in the highest regard. They all seem "past their prime" and many sound like they are remeniscing on how it used to be. In terms of the books title "Insider reveal their creative secrets." .. I find this laughable. I've read through the entire book, and there are very few concrete, CLEAR ideas on how to improve your musical craft. If you're a person that likes to learn through explicit instruction, then this book is definitely not for you. If you simply want to read interviews from some semi-relevant people that were in the music biz at one time, then this book may be for you. I would highly recommend going to your local bookstore and scanning through a few pages before spending your money.
Timely Insights in the bold, brave digital music space........2006-03-31
Kelli Richards and David Battino have done a tremendous job bringing in the masters of this space to reveal where we are and we are going in this revoloutionary time.
On a personal level, and as an artist/producer in this space, I found great take aways from people I have studied, admired and in some cases, worked directly with over the years including Herbie Hancock, Todd Rundgren, Don Was, Thomas Dolby and Brian Eno.
I highly recommend this insightful and inspired writing. 5 stars!!
Accelerated Journey into the World of Music Making..........2006-02-04
Kelli Richard's and David Battino's The Art of Digital Music is a journey into the minds of great artists and experts in the field of digital music. The information presented is very concentrated representing years of industry and creative experience. It offers insight into the evolution of music trends, the technologies that support them and an understanding about the mindset required to be successful in this challenging industry.
Learn how it is to work with Madonna or Britney Spears or what it takes to think like Herbie Hancock! Realize making music is an art facilitated by new technologies that can enhance an artist's ability to express their talent to the world without depending on a major label.
Once started you cannot put this book down as you discover each unique story within. It is amazing how much you can learn about digital music from just reading the interviews!
The Art of Digital Music is a great resource to have at home whether you actively produce music or not and makes a splendid gift for those who aspire to enter the music industry. If you ever had a song playing in your mind that you would like to bring into the world but you don't know how - this book is for you!
How grateful I am that this book has been written by people who KNOW what they are talking about!.......2005-12-24
Each and every word of this book was necessary for me to read. The information could not have been written more clearly. I use it daily. Thank you, Kelli Richards and all for writing such a great one.

Book Description
A young American visits Communist Transylvania during the closing years of the Cold War, discovering that Communism is vampirism, and a man is better dead than undead. This dark fantasy/satire (of both Nicolae Ceausescu's Rumania and of Communism itself) combines the insights of Ayn Rand with the black comedy of Kurt Vonnegut.
Customer Reviews:
Fast-paced, darkly comic thriller.......2005-07-08
Sipos captures the drab madness of Ceausescu's Romania, combining dark humor with nail-biting suspense as an American screenwriter teams up with a supermodel CIA rouge agent to drive a stake through the heart of the super Stalinist regime - and its diabolical leaders.
From the opening scenes in a gloomy Bucharest populated with vampires who serve the evil regime - and the ghouls and even orphans who grab at whatever human morsels they can, the story moves at near-breakneck speed to a climax so bizarre that the reader is left wanting another hundred pages of this stuff.
Sipos has a deft understanding of his subjects - socialism as vampirism - and Romania under the megalomaniac fist of super-Stalinist Nicolae Ceausescu and his obscene, venom-spitting wife, Elena. Some of the dialogue seems lifted nearly intact from Ion Pacepa's RED HORIZONS - a device that works perfectly in conveying the tragicomedy of those dark days in the 80's prior to the "Revolution" that ended with the bloody execution of the power mad couple.
I read it in a few hours, only wishing the book were longer. Well written and researched, VAMPIRE NATION is a bloody feast for anyone drawn to the horror genre - and a comic delight for anyone interested in the real horrors of life under Communism, especially its mind-boggling version that played out so tragically in Romania. It helps knowing that, eventually, Nic and Elena hit such a bloody and ignomious end - because the Romania Sipos reveals would have otherwise required an invasion by George W. Yet the book isn't dated in the least.
Its funny, scary, romantic, revolting and - yes - thought provoking. Sipos loathes the erstwhile Western approach of cooperation and conciliation with the Iron Curtain countries (Romania retained its Most Favored Nation trading status right up til the end). Like Reagan and others, he was right.
Buy it, draw the drapes, hide under the duvet with a good flashlight - and let this natural tale-spinner pull you into a vortex so real and creepy that you'll need a bath in holy water once the bloody thing reaches its final, dripping climax.
Interesting premise, but could have been better..........2005-01-10
As a fan of the vampire genre, I really like this novel's premise, however I thought it was a little heavy-handed. I think it would have been better if it focused on parallels between vampirism and Communism, and limited the scope of this analogy to its Romanian locale, rather than limiting itself to the high-level metaphor of Communist blood-sucking being equivalent to vampire blood-sucking. I also felt like there was room for the characters to be taken a little further in their development. Many questions remained open at the end. I'd like to see a sequel, just to see more resolution to mythology and character elements.
Subtle it is not!.......2003-09-29
The idea of this story is entertaining. The writing is just too bad. It does not suggest in a subtle way that communism is vampirism, it blatantly states it-over and over! I finished the book-I always do. However, I almost never get rid of a book once I have finished it. this one, though, I couldn't wait to finish and bring to the used bookstore.
For readers of any political stripe.......2002-10-10
For whatever reason, it often seems that literary talent seems to go hand-in-hand with left-of-center politics. Hence, for a political conservative such as myself, it is often difficult to find novels that are enthralling, enjoyable reads that don't require one to gnash his teeth whenever the author decides to mix a little political propaganda into the mix. However, occasionally, the intrepid right-wing reader is lucky enough to come across an exception to the rule and Thomas Sipos' often frightening, frequently hilarious, and -- in the end -- disturbingly haunting Vampire Nation is one such beautiful exception.
Set in the late '80s, Vampire Nation follows Henry, intrepid American screenwriter, into Romania where he discovers that the decaying communist regime is actually made up of decadent vampires. Somewhat forcefully recruited by an enigmatic woman, Henry is soon part of a violent conspiracy to assassinate Romania's ruler, Nicolae Ceausescu. Over the course of one night, Henry is forced into a netherworld where communist vampires live off the blood of the "common man" and where the country side is haunted by the ghosts of innocent men, women, and children sacrificed in the name of "the people."
The analogy between vampirism and communism is very explicit but also very believable. As a writer, Sipos has a definite knack for creating dark images and many of the book's sequences will remain in the reader's head long after the final page has been turned. However, what makes this political book work is the fact that Sipos doesn't simply rest on his politics. Instead, the book's anti-communist message is mixed in with a thrilling, fast-moving story that will capture the interest and imagination of any reader, regardless of that reader's ideology. As scary as Sipos' vampires are, this is also, at-times, a laugh out loud novel and Sipos shows a wit that would make several better known writers envious. He has created a truly likeable and sympathetic everyman in his protaganist and its hard not to get caught up in Henry's adventures and his unlikely romance with a woman who might save his life or kill him, depending on the circumstances. All-in-all, this is an impressive, intelligent tour-de-force and truly both one of the best horror novels and one of the best books period that I've had the pleasure to read in a long time.
Frightfully close to reality.......2002-07-30
I lived in Romania during the last 15 years of communism and yes, the atmosphere pervading the book is awfully close to reality. The dark misery and total fear, the orphans, the total surveillance, they are all true. All telephones in Romania did carry microphones, as did ashtrays in some restaurants. The grotesque behavior of the ruling class - Nicu Ceausescu pissing on the oysters, and many others, are witness accounts described in "Red Horizons: The True Story of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescus' Crimes, Lifestyle, and Corruption", by I.M.Pacepa, from which the author borrows happily, even in terms of actual words said. (Pacepa was the chief of Romanian espionage and defected to the West; his book is available on Amazon as well). All geographical and architectural descriptions are correct too. Vampirism is an elegant explanation that gives totalitarianism a sense of logic. I almost wish it were true, at least things would have made much more sense. I can't stress that enough - except for the actual drinking of blood and the heroes' attempt to kill Ceausescu, the book is almost a documentary one. Overall, I enjoyed reading it, the adventures of Henry and Anya are fun. I only gave it 4 stars because 5 stars should be reserved for the rare masterpieces of literature.

this book is a buy........2007-10-06
I enjoyed the book. everyone who is worried about the economic trend in the US should read this book. I is a buy because it's a book that one can keep for future reference.
Crash Proof if you have the assets!.......2007-10-05
My wife and I read this and found it very helpful. It makes sense. However, our assets only amount to 40K. We are retired and all of our income is from SS and a pension in dollars. There is nothing we can do about this. We moved almost all of our assets out of dollars.
If and when the US economy collapses, we will be hurt badly even if our 40K remains solid.
Quarterlife Finance says, "Read it with a grain of salt.".......2007-10-03
Consider this scenario: The domestic manufacturing sector is all but gone. Housing prices crash and billions of dollars of unrealized equity evaporate almost overnight. Consumer spending drops and the US service economy, driven by consumer spending and propped up by foreign investment and trade deficits, crashes. Foreign investors see the weakness and stop buying dollar denominated assets, furthering the dollar's free-fall. Our interest rates shoot skyward, and at the same time we suffer hyperinflation. This catastrophic chain of events leads to a tremendous depression that leaves millions of Americans penniless and unemployed.
That is just one of the possible scenarios foreseen by Schiff and Downes in their 2007 book Crash Proof: How to Profit From the Coming Economic Collapse (Lynn Sonberg Books). This book makes for an interesting read, though one to be taken with a grain of salt. The book combines dire doom-and-gloom predictions with a healthy dose of mistrust for the government. If the authors were not so absolutely correct about many of the points in the book, it wouldn't deserve a second look. The authors' predictions are proving valid with each day that goes by, though, so I think this book is worth reading.
The book spends the first seven chapters discussing why the US economy is about to collapse. The author delves into the shift from a manufacturing to a service economy and the possible consequences. He examines inflation and convincingly explains why he believes that the government manipulates inflation indicators to hide the truth. He predicts a sharp decline in the dollar for many reasons, including the possibility that the dollar may no longer be the world's reserve currency after a few years.
He goes on to consider the chaos that has affected the stock market in recent years, and how the tech bubble never really burst but rather shifted into housing. He predicts a decline in housing on par with or greater than the tech crash at the beginning of this decade. He predicts that the same dollars will go towards creating a commodity bubble and result in even greater inflation. Before giving us his answer to these problems, he caps his analysis with a coup de grace - the problem of debt in the US. The author is very concerned about the levels of consumer debt, lack of home equity, and US government debt that threaten to overwhelm both US citizens and the economy as a whole.
Finally, we are given the answer to this impending crisis in three simple steps: move most of your investment dollars into foreign dividend-paying stocks and gold, and hold a reserve of liquidity (preferably in foreign currency) to allow you to take advantage of investment opportunities as the domestic economy comes crashing down around you.
I liked this book for many reasons. For one, it presents a worst-case scenario that deserves serious consideration given the veracity of some of the authors' claims. Second, it presents interesting reading. I particularly enjoyed the authors' analogy of the current world economy to an island on which six Asians work around-the-clock to feed, clothe, and shelter the sole American - who benefits the Asians by giving them a reason to produce.
Most interestingly, the author hit the nail on the head with respect to both housing and the declining dollar. An investor in February, 2007 (when this book was published) would have done very well moving his portfolio to gold and foreign stocks.
However, there were some major problems with this book, in my opinion. First and foremost, the book ends with a shameless plug for the authors' investment company. If his ideas are that excellent, he should not need to plug his brokerage....clients will find him regardless. Also, he presents his company as the single outlet for implementing his plan. I would appreciate two or three unbiased options (low-cost foreign index funds, for example) - otherwise his entire book seems like a fear-based ploy to increase his own business with little regard for his clients.
The authors also make a strong case for dividends over capital appreciation. However, if you are a believer in efficient markets, singling out dividend-paying stocks will not result in a greater return than the market as a whole.
Lastly, a major premise of the book is that the lack of manufacturing in America will lead to a decline in the dollar, inflation, and recession. However, I think it is important to note that a declining dollar may serve to bolster our manufacturing sector by making our products more competitive both domestically and internationally. So the very problem the authors present could potentially solve itself.
Overall, the authors do an excellent job of considering the potential for a decline in the US economy, and present some interesting strategies to mitigate the effects of the crash. Even if you disagree with the authors, some of their strategies (including investment in foreign securities and gold) have a place in almost every portfolio.
Good to be aware of this, don't have to agree...........2007-10-03
I saw Peter Schiff on CNBC and was drawn to his style. I love the fact that he stands up to these idiot talking heads that think everything is "pretty good".. the economy is basically strong they will tell you. Well I tend to agree with Schiff's views. Worth the read.

IN CLOSING I WILL SAY THAT IF WE WANT TO HAVE A SOUND COUNTRY AGAIN AND A CURRENCY THAT HAS VALUE, THEN WE NEED TO ELECT RON PAUL. HE WILL DO AWAY WITH THE IRS AND THE FEDERAL RESERVE AND RESTORE OUR CURRENCY TO ONE THAT IS WORTH MORE THAN A "CONTINENTAL"

"... Inside PFTB (Proofs from The Book) is indeed a glimpse of mathematical heaven, where clever insights and beautiful ideas combine in astonishing and glorious ways. There is vast wealth within its pages, one gem after another. Some of the proofs are classics, but many are new and brilliant proofs of classical results. ...Aigner and Ziegler... write: "... all we offer is the examples that we have selected, hoping that our readers will share our enthusiasm about brilliant ideas, clever insights and wonderful observations." I do. ... "
Notices of the AMS, August 1999
"... the style is clear and entertaining, the level is close to elementary ... and the proofs are brilliant. ..."
LMS Newsletter, January 1999
This third edition offers two new chapters, on partition identities, and on card shuffling. Three proofs of Euler's most famous infinite series appear in a separate chapter. There is also a number of other improvements, such as an exciting new way to "enumerate the rationals".
Customer Reviews:
this is THE BOOK!.......2007-09-13
One of the most important mathematicians in the last quarter of a century was, arguably, Paul Erdos. At least we could say he was the one who travelled the most, and who had more collaborations with other mathematicians in the areas of Graph Theory, Combinatorics, etc.
One of his dreams was to assemble a collection of all the most beautiful proofs in Mathematics, in which God would maintain the perfect proofs in mathematical theorems. This collection would be called The Book. Unfortunately, he didn't see his dream fulfilled while among us, but after his death Agner and Ziegler wrote this excellent book, "Proofs from THE BOOK", as a nice excerpt of what The Book could have been.
Topics in this book range from Number Theory to Analysis, and also discussing Combinatorics and Graph Theory. Most of the proofs are accessible to everybody with some mathematical training, they are beautiful and surprisingly simple.
I just love this book, in the last five years or so I have bought several copies of it, as it has been my favorite gift for people who want to discover a little more about the beauty of Mathematics.
Fantastic exploration into mathematics.......2007-01-04
We used it for an undergraduate statistics seminar series; and that was largely a success. PFTB contains many of the most elegant proofs I have ever seen. Reading through it is, by itself, an enjoyable journey through some aspects of many branches of mathematics. A few of its chapters may not address the average undergraduate math population quite well, due to its depth of reasoning and assumption of prior knowledge in Abstract Algebra and Geometry; but those who reads it are likely to be more advanced anyway. In general, an excellent book.
Excellent, but bizarre and atypical book on mathematics.......2006-10-23
I agree with what most of the other authors have said. This is a wonderful book, if only a bit strange. The book is very clearly written and easy to follow, although many of the proofs require a great deal of contemplation in order to fully understand.
This is one of those books that a serious mathematician will probably enjoy picking up and reading from time to time. It is neither a reference nor a textbook, but more a source of mathematical inspiration, a collection of particularly elegant mathematical results. My favourite aspect of this book is the way it focuses on proofs and results that draw connections between different areas of mathematics. The interconnectedness of mathematics is too often ignored by researchers nowadays, who have become specialized to the point that their work is often inaccessible. This book is a healthy step in the opposite direction.
My only complaint about this book (and it's not really about this book at all) is that there are not more books like this. The book is heavily slanted towards number theory, combinatorics, and graph theory. The chapter on analysis is beautiful, but atypical of analysis as a whole. I think that it would be wonderful for people to write similar books in other topics, in particular, analysis, algebra, or probability or topology like the other reviewer mentioned.
As a final note I would like to give credit to the publisher for doing a good job on this one. The typesetting is excellent, the layout is clear with all the illustrations, the paper is of high quality, and the binding is oustanding. It has held up well to moderate use and still looks brand new. I only wish some of my more heavily-used reference texts were bound like this.
Proofs from the Book.......2006-08-24
The famous eccentric mathematician had a theory that God (who he liked to call the SF-Supreme Fascist) had a book with every mathematical theorem and that the book had the most beautiful and elegant proofs for the theorems.
This book has that philosophy and presents great proofs for many beautiful theorems.
It is a masterpiece. A book that shows why mathematicians love what they do.
belong's on any math lover's bookshelf.......2006-08-13
It is a pleasure to explore these polished gems, some prettier than others but all worth looking at. I find it worth having within reach and reading a theorem and proof now and again for the sheer joy of (re)discovery.
