Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2006-05-04

I highly recommend this book for anyone who teaches singing- especially those who work with groups of inexperienced singers. Phillips goes a long way in demystifying singing technique and causes for singing problems as well as providing ideas for remediation in older inexperienced singers. The fact that Phillips approaches singing in a very objective manner makes singing an attainable skill for anyone who is willing to put in the physical work. The exercises in this book are intended for group use and when used consistently they really work! Many people ask me how I get my 4th and 5th grade boys to sing so willingly and I really think a lot of it has to do with the information that I have taken to my music classroom from this book. Some of the exercises may sound a little silly at first, but give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Overall approach to effective vocal production in youth........1998-05-26

This book explores the history behind American vocal training, describing how different attitudes towards school singing has affected the choral sound as we know it today. The author also effectively presents how singing is a psychomotor process, and one that is not always easily taught or learned. He reviews the vocal parameters of younger and developing voices, and explains the difficulty with the adolescent voice change (especially with boys). He also encourages teachers to express singing as a "sport", one that requires physical involvement of the body! The second half of the book is dedicated to 90 specific exercise methods for teachers to use in developing their choir. He has broken it into three age levels so that teachers anywhere within the grades 1-12 spectrum can use it effectively, or just use it to supplement a program they may already use and like. The exercises develop repiration, phonation, resonance, diction, and expression within choirs. Eighteen wonderful vocal exercises are explained for each of these areas. This would make an excellent reference book for any music teacher who is involved with teaching singing to any age level. The exercises are specific and help coordinate the students' overall approach to singing.

1 out of 5 stars Será buen periodista, pero es mal escritor.......2003-01-18

5 out of 5 stars Detrás de la máscara.......2003-01-18

                    5 out of 5 stars Muy interesante.......2002-09-27

                    5 out of 5 stars great.......2002-09-01

wonderful, anyone who reads this book will fully understand what being a latino in the U.S is really like. felicidades Sr. Ramos!

5 out of 5 stars Great book if you are looking for the what the title describes.......2007-06-18

I bought this book expecting fluff based on the reviews. I am a big fan of Dragnet the radio show but did not think the book would cover much of it in depth. I was wrong. Although it spends more time discussing the television series and movies, I was happy with the information on the radio show.

This book details the Dragnet radio show, both Dragnet television shows, and Mark VII movies. It does this through the central person in all of these productions, Jack Webb. However, the reader also learns about the regulars on the shows, and we get to know a bit about them as well.

"My Name's Friday" does not claim to be a biography on Webb and if that is what you are looking for, this is the wrong book for you. If you are looking for a bio of Jack Webb, there are many other books that you would probably enjoy more. However, If you are interested in the multiple incarnations of Dragnet and Pete Kelly's Blues, this is the book for you.

In addition to the main text, the appendixes include titles and brief descriptions of each Dragnet radio and television show in addition to police terms used in the shows and movies.

                      4 out of 5 stars OK, but..........2005-09-09

I found this book to be an OK read. The only problem I had was that toward the end the tone of the writing shifted as the author sought to be a Jack Webb apologist. There are excuses made for the way the Dragnet of the 60s portrayed drug users, and there's almost an indignant tone taken over Dragnet spoofs such as the Dan Ackroyd film and even Nick at Nite promos!

The reason the Dragnet of the 60s became such a ripe ground for spoofing (besides the rapid fire patter) was indeed the portrayal of drug users. The series basically equated marijuana use with LSD and heroin, which is a laughable premise. The author's defense of the "Blue Boy" episode was particularly humorous. I remember seeing one of the participants of the drug party in that show actually physically trying to climb the walls. Talk about heavy-handed and unintentionally funny!

That said, I still found the book worthwhile reading, I'm a fan of Dragnet, both for Jack Webb's innovative style of shooting and the campy humor. It was interesting discovering things about Webb's radio show and some of his films that I had not previously known. I was easily able to overcome any minor annoyances with the tone shifting at the end.

                      5 out of 5 stars The facts...and much more.......2005-08-26

This is a must if you are collecting the radio shows, original TV series, or the '67-'70 version. A lot of the 50's series is on DVD, but they are scattered on all sorts of compilations. This book helps keep track of what you've got. I particularly enjoyed hearing from the extras that Webb used religiously.

But beyond Dragnet, there's a lot of interesting stuff here, how Webb was a jazz nut, including his foray into recording with his spoken-word "You're My Girl" album.

I think it's very interesting how he worked with ex-wife and her husband on Emergency! Many paramedics credit Emergency! with inspiring them to join this service. He obviously loved police and emergency services and his hometown. It makes you wonder, if Webb had lived, what his creative reaction to say the LA riots and the OJ trial would have been.

Great, great, great that's all that can be said about this book on ol' Jack Webb. Definately recommend that you get it,causes it's truly Dragnet A to Z. Buy it and remember when T.V. was new.

                      5 out of 5 stars As Solid As Joe Friday's .38 Special.......2002-09-07

The subtitle succinctly describes this book: a biography of Jack Webb with the emphasis on "Dragnet" in its various forms and on his long neglected feature films. Most readers, like myself, will probably get the book for its coverage of "Dragnet" in its successive permutations: radio series (1949-55), the original TV series (1951-59), theatrical film (1954), TV movie (1966), and the second TV series (1967-70). Hayde shows that in all three media, Webb was an innovator, using new and existing technologies to enhance realism and impact and speed up production. He was a stickler for realism in everything from doorknobs to nomenclature. When "Dragnet" moved to TV, Webb kept the radio series' actors, despite the network's fears that they weren't glamorous enough for TV; besides being famously loyal, Webb wanted actors who looked like real people, not movie stars. Hayde also shows that "Dragnet" was more than just reenactment, but showed the human side of police work and the effects of crime.

Some years ago, Leonard Malton wrote that Webb's theatrical films demanded reappraisal. Hayde does here, perhaps giving them their first detailed examinations since their premieres. Webb had seen radio and TV as stepping stones to film, but his features are often considered less successful than his TV shows. If so, this book shows that any shortcomings were due to writing, not acting or technique.

Hayde describes the success Webb enjoyed. The "Dragnet" dum-de-dum-dum theme is one of the most recognized in the world. The two "Dragnet" TV series were huge hits in both prime time and syndication and Webb also enjoyed success with "Adam-12" and "Emergency." He realized about $2.5 million from the sale of the syndication rights to the first "Dragnet" TV series, a huge sum for the day. But as Hayde shows, Webb paid a high price, too. Three of his four marriages ended in divorce, casaulties of his workaholism. His daily regimen of 18 hours of work, three packs of cigarettes, and up to three hard drinks ruined his health and lead to an early and fatal heart attack at age 62 in December 1982.

A huge amount of research obviously went into this book, including interviews with surviving associates of Webb. The writing is excellent. The book is profusely illustrated, with an especially evocative cover shot. It also contains some fascinating and useful appendices, including episode guides.

But this book is more than just a history of Webb's productions. Hayde provides some very incisive analyses, giving praise and criticism when due. He does an excellent job in placing "Dragnet" in context. It may seem too cut and dry today, but "Dragnet" was a breath of fresh air at a time when most crime dramas were wildly inaccurate and consisted of screams, gunshots, sirens, and wisecracks. Hayde points out that the huge success of the original TV series in syndication showed the lucrative possibilities of that market and thus doomed live TV. Hayde also points out that the second series' drug episodes, now considered campy, reflected the horror and bewilderment that broke out when drugs hit the middle class in the 1960's.

In summary, this is one of the best non-fiction books I've read. I recommend it highly, not only to Webb fans, but to any serious student of radio, TV, or film.

In my opinion, I don't know wether to get because it is usefull, or not to get it because it isn't usefull. I have been dying to get the Sims Makin Magic since the time my friend told me about it. I own every Sims Expansion pack that there is. The original Sims, The Sims Livin Large, The Sims House Party, The Sims Hot Date, The Sims Unleashed, and The Sims Superstar. I was actually VERY disappointed in the Sims Superstar, but that's what I get for getting it just to spend my hard earned money. I thought that the book would be usefull, but when I heard that there are 240 pages and only 111 are devoted to The Sims Makin Magic, I was kinda bumed. Somebody, PLEASE help me make the write decision! (I only filled in the star because I had to, don't take my word based on the stars, do it based on my most likely unhelpful review because I haven't bought the book yet!)

                      2 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2004-03-25

I first purchased the expansion pack, Makin' Magic, and played with it for a day or so, and then I purchased this book on the expansion pack hoping for some tips and tricks and some more info on the game. Unfortunately, I didn't find what I was looking for. The book does have some good charts about what spells require which ingrediants and what it takes to do a spell right and takes you for an overview of the game, but there weren't any helpful tips except for one or two. And everything I read in there I had already figured out just by playing the game. There also aren't any cheats in this book like there are for the rest of the books (on the rest of the expansion packs). Overall, I found this to be a bit of a disappointment. If you are buying it with the game then I guess it'd be alright, but if you already bought the game and played around with it for a few hours then you know all this book can tell you.

I played the game for about five hours and I made notes on spells and charms. I then purchased this book thinking it would give me a complete list of spells and charms and no it doesn't. It did give me everything that I had already wrote down.

It only gave me one other spell and it doesn't say what it does you will just have to try it out and see. It gives you one other charm but it doesn't say what it does you will just have to try it out and see.

I alread know how to play this game, I have every expansion for the Sims, I just wanted a complete spell book and I feel I was robbed.

"The Sims Makin' Magic: Prima's Official Strategy Guide" is a great buy! It's chock full of useful tips and information and a must-have for any Makin' Magic fan. The first half of the book is a basic recap of the original "Sims" for anyone who doesn't already know how to play ;-) The second half details "Makin' Magic", everything from how to raise your dragon to spell lists to dueling tips. I found several sections especially helpful...

A chart listing all the spells/charms and cookbook recipes and their ingredients was especially time-saving as I no longer had to keep running back to the family spell book/cookbook to check ingredients. The descriptions of each spell are also listed so you know what to expect and don't end up blowing your hard-earned MagiCoins on ingredients for a spell that doesn't even help you that much.

This strategy guide is also packed with tips on how to complete quests, how to win a duel, where to find rare ingredients, info on magical rewards, funhouse designs, how to hatch a friendly dragon, and a helpful general guide on how to begin your highly rewarding magical career.

The Sims Makin Magic, the FINAL expansion pack for the original Sims has just been released. As with every pack, a prima game has released a strategy guide. There is something you have to understand before you purchase this item. Yes, it is helpful in figuring out what to do for the first few days, but almost all the information included you could look up on the internet. Also for the SEVENTH time now, over half of the book is devoted to the original Sims, while only the last part is set aside for the new expansion pack. It says in the book this is for all the people who have only the expansion that the book is talking about, but by this point almost everyone who is buying Makin Magic has at least one other expansion. This book is 240 pages long, and the Makin Magic section doesn't start until page 129. Every time a new expansion comes out, I buy it and the strategy guide, to see if they have changed their ways. I have been disappointed. This is a HUGE waste of trees and resources, not to mention money. The information was very helpful, and they have a FEW pages that I think I might refer to often, but if you really want the info that is in this book, go to thesims.com and read the transcripts or find a good fan site. You do not need this book to play the game, and the more guides I see in this format, the lower I will rate them because Prima just doesn't get it.
