5 out of 5 stars Solid, competent and readable biography of Syd........2007-07-22

This is a very well researched and written book with many fascinating details about Syd's life. We are lucky to have it, as Syd is not exactly George Washington, inspiring biography after three part biography.

Also, much is not known about Syd. If you are interested in learning more about him, I highly recommend this readable and insightful work. But there will always be much that we will not know about this fascinating artist... this book is a good place to start.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing read............2006-12-12

i was so excited to read this book as i adore the gorgeous syd.but this book was a big disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Great Diamond.......2006-11-22

If you like Pink Floyd's music, after read this book you are going to love it and you are going to understand lots of things about lyrics. Thanks Syd, wherever you are now!

4 out of 5 stars Shine on.......2006-09-25

A good, concise biography of Syd's rise and retreat from stardom. Not as detailed as Julian Palacios's "Lost in the Woods", which includes several excerpts from this book.

5 out of 5 stars newer edition on the way.......2006-09-10

To reflect the recent passing of "Syd" the book will be re-released (other details available through Omnibus Press).

4 out of 5 stars For All Fans.......2005-09-02

I, like many people, and many more to come, became a Pink Floyd fan after their best work had been completed. However, I (like many others) have been so taken with the music that I had to do some research on the somewhat mythological founder and now insane recluse. This book is a definite page turner for anyone who is truly interested in Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd.

5 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett - legendary founder of Pink Floyd.......2001-07-25

If you haven't heard Barrett's material, this book is a really good place to introduce yourself to the man behind Pink Floyd. If you have, this book will undoubtedly enlighten you on the origins of Pink Floyd and Syd's subsequent demise. Crazy Diamond is a thoroughly researched book which is sympathetic to Syd's material. It portrays him as a vulnerable person who couldn't cope with the pressure of having to perform, after having almost single-handedly written the Floyd's suberb debut album Piper At The Gates of Dawn. A fantastic read . . . buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Until the real thing comes along.......2000-01-12

A good enough book, full of stories, reminiscences, apocrypha. Unfortunately the writing is not that great, so all the trivia doesn't really give you a feel for who Syd Barrett was and why he's so fascinating. The definitive Madcap bio is still to be written, but for now this'll have to do...

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......1999-01-29

This is an amusing enough read, though rambling and somewhat poorly written. We don't really gain too much of an understanding of the man or his music, but then information about both has always been scanty, and this books does its best to at least find out the truth about reported incidents of his life.

    Book Description

In Dancing in Spite of Myself, Lawrence Grossberg—well known as a pioneering figure in cultural studies—has collected essays written over the past twenty years that have also established him as one of the leading theorists of popular culture and, specifically, of rock music. Grossberg offers an original and sophisticated view of the growing power of popular culture and its increasing inseparability from contemporary structures of economic and political power and from our everyday lives.
In the course of conducting this exploration into the meaning of "popularity," he investigates the nature of fandom, the social effects of rock music and youth culture, and the possibilities for understanding the history of popular texts and practices. Describing what he calls "the postmodernity of everyday life," Grossberg offers important insights into the relation of pop music to issues of postmodernity and inton the growing power of the new cultural conservatism and its relationship to "the popular." Exploring the limits of existing theories of hegemony in cultural studies, Grossberg reveals the ways in which popular culture is being mobilized in the service of economic and political struggles. In articulating his own critical practice, Grossberg surveys and challenges some of the major assumptions of popular culture studies, including notions of domination and resistance, mainstream and marginality, and authenticity and incorporation.
Dancing in Spite of Myself provides an introduction to contemporary theories of popular culture and a clear statement of relationships among theories of the nature of rock music, postmodernity, and conservative hegemony.

    Book Description

The international supermodel and actor details his rise to fame in the fashion world and reveals for the first time the truth about his stormy, passionate, and now famous relationship with Carolyn Bessette.

This is the story of a small–town kid who moved to the big city, fell in love with a beautiful, mysterious woman, and found himself in competition with the most eligible bachelor in the world, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Now, for the first time, Michael Bergin reveals the truth behind a life lived in the limelight and a relationship shrouded in secrecy. From his early days growing up in a small blue–collar Connecticut town, to his meteoric rise as fashion icon and television star, to the passion he shared with the enigmatic and complex Carolyn Bessette, this is an inside look at the world of beauty, power, and celebrity.

In 1992, Michael and Carolyn met in a bar in New York City. She was unlike any woman he had ever known–sophisticated, successful, with bewitching charm and grace. An intensely passionate relationship was born. Not long after, Michael landed the coveted Calvin Klein underwear campaign, and his career took off. The future looked bright, and Carolyn and Michael seemed destined for a long and happy life together.

But it was not to be. Four years later Michael was an international fashion icon and Carolyn was Mrs. John F. Kennedy Jr.–however, the story doesn't end there. This is the truth about their lives, a tale full of warmth, humour, heartbreak, and tragedy.

Above all, The Other Man is a testament to the enduring power of love and a story about the painful choices we make with our all–too–human hearts.

    3 out of 5 stars When a Man Loves a Woman....................2007-07-16

This book, to me, was not all that bad. I get tickled by the people who said "Well, Michael Bergin sure isn't a writer." No joke - he is a model.
I found this book refreshing in the fact that it was about a man pining after a woman. How often do you see that? All in all, I didnt think his writing was all that bad either. This book focuses on the relationship between Calvin Klein model Michael Bergin, and Carolyn Bessette (who ended up marrying John Kennedy, Jr, which eventually resulted in her untimely death since he was not as experienced at flying as he thought he was). There are parts of this book that are gut-wrenching and you can almost feel Bergin's pain as you read about how Bessette worked him like a "marionette", pulling his strings...pushing him away only to eventually pull him back closer. Although he says the book was to defend her, it just doesn't leave a very good image of her (3 abortions later) and bouncing between her husband's bed and her lovers bed.
If this book is true, I feel bad for Carolyn who obviously was looking for the happiness I dont think she ever found......and never will.

5 out of 5 stars me, carolyn, and john f. kennedy.......2007-05-18

i bought this book about two years ago i never got to it until few weeks ago, and once i started i jusy could`nt put the book down not until i was forced by time.
the author is honest, and his heart and feeling are right there you can actually feel it. whoever claims tyhis is a poorly written book, i guess he never read anything written with a full heart (for example: "a royal duty" by paul burrell, the late princess diana`s butler).

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-08-14

I usually don't read this type of book, but did purchase it and set it aside. I must admit that it was very interesting, although poorly written. For those who wrote reviews decrying his disloyalty, well, she wasn't that loyal either. Her name was CAROLYN not CAROLINE, Caroline is JFK, Jr's sister. I have read All that Remains, by Carol DeFalco Radziwill, and the personality that she describes Carolyn to have had is similar to Michael's description. I have never heard of him and really don't care what he has done to make a living. I believe Carolyn was neurotic and strange in many ways. She, also, must have had a very attractive side to her. I never saw her as "beautiful", but, obviously, others did. Including the author. It reads fast and it holds your attention. Certainly, not a must read, but entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Refreshing.......2006-07-12

Well, in reference to all of the people saying that Carolyn is not alive to defend herself-I didn't see too much in the book that really attacked her! It is evident to the last page that he was, and always will be, in awe of this woman(misguided as that may have been)! I don't see what all the fuss about her was, she was okay but not a supermodel or anything!! He really was in love with her! And that is sad, because if the account MB gave in this book about the mental torture he went through is true, then Carolyn was action-packed with issues. Anyone who has been in a relationship, or wanted to be in a relationship that ended up one-sided can attest to the mental torment you go through. This book is a horror story for those that have been there and done that. I just wonder if his poor wife is always living in the shadow of Carolyn, if he is always measuring her by the other woman because his obsession with Carolyn is probably still there. But anyway, this book is good because I really believe that this is how he thought the situation was. If it wasn't, he would try to make himself out to be much more macho. And about all the flings he had, sometimes when you are rebounding and hurt, you will do crazy things. I applaud his effort, and really liked this book.

    5 out of 5 stars I commend him!.......2006-06-14

The Other Man is a great book and a quick read. You continue to read and want to know what else is going to happen. The book is quite entertaining, but also leaves you with a respectable and sincere feeling from both sides.

Michael Bergin allows you to feel his ups and downs with Caroline. I hold much compassion for him. He was in a controlling relationship due to feelings. Feelings are stronger than people can imagine. He does personify Caroline as being a control freak, but that was the way she was able to lead the double life she held. This relationship took on a life of its own due to her power. Michael allowed her to control him more than he thought. He should be proud for all of his accomplishments, and yes she had a lot to do with it. He needed molding and he allowed himself to get molded by her. That's what happens when you are young and learning. He learned from her and she learned from him. It is all part of a growing relationship, although it ended. Like she said everything good has to end. Impact is what she left behind.

Overall, I feel compassion and lots of sadness for Michael Bergin. He led a life of hope. Hope that he could be with his soul mate. He honestly had so much respect for her when in return she didn't realize what she had. Caroline toyed with many emotions and that is a hard thing to take. I commend Michael. It takes strength to write and tell your story. He put his heart down on the table, although it was after her death. I believe he did it in a way that showed true love. He never degraded her, but showed much respect to her.

        Book Description

Struts is the most popular framework for building scalable Java Web applications. The first part of this book explains the latest version of Struts and teaches how to build real-world Struts applications. The second part goes the extra mile to discuss how to design Struts applications and solve common problems in Struts development. It's like two books at the price of one.

More importantly, this book is a tutorial designed to make the reader truly understand the concepts. It explains not only how to use Struts' features, but also how a certain feature works under the hood and which to choose if similar features exist. Examples are relevant and based on real-world applications. Several important topics rarely mentioned in other books—such as file upload, paging, object caching—are given detailed treatment.

The first part is for beginners and Struts developers who don't feel they have a complete grasp of Struts. It explains the following and many more:

        - The Model-View-Controller design pattern
        - Action forms
        - User input validation
        - The Validator Plug-in
        - JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library (JSTL)
        - The JSP 2.0 Expression Language (EL)
        - HTML, Bean, Logic, Nested Tag Libraries
        - Application configuration
        - The Custom SelectLabel Tag
        - Tiles - Message handling and internationalization
        - Struts-JSF Plug-in
        - The open source DisplayTag Library
        - File upload and programmable file download
        - Jakarta Commons BeanUtil Class

In addition, this book deals with many design topics such as
        - Data persistence
        - Transfer objects
        - Configuration information sharing
        - Object caching
        - Application security
        - Paging and sorting
        - HttpServletRequest wrapping
        - Early session invalidation

The last chapter, "How Struts Works", dissects Struts' source code and explains the components that together make Struts tick. This chapter is particularly interesting to readers who want to know how Struts works in the background and how to extend Struts. Understanding it helps you design and develop more effective Struts applications.
This book is for you if you need one written with clarity and readability in mind.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good layout, unclear explanations.......2007-03-09

I bought this book after reading a lot of positive reviews... and i'm a little disappointed.

        Minuses of this books are:
        - language - it's very poor - i guess the author is not a native speaker; the content of the book may be very unclear for people who don't speak english in everyday life (as i do),
        - unclear explanations - a lot of easy things are explained in an obscure way. In addition some parts of the book just seem to be incomplete - sometimes you just want to grasp something and you can't because there is lack of information - you turn the page in hope you'll find what you think should be there and... there's entirely new subject there,
        - some examples are not printed in the book so if you want to read them you have to turn on you computer - i don't like it.

        Pluses:
        - nice layout - chapters are arranged in a logical and intuitive way, the most simple and general ones at the beginning, the most exceptional at the end. I suppose it will be fast and easy to find something if there is a need to recall it,
        - a lot of simple examples - even if you are not able to understand the explanations of some subjects you can easily grasp them by reading the examples.

In general - this book can help you learn Struts but you have to read it very patiently and carefully. Don't buy this book if you think you have a better choice.

3 out of 5 stars good book overall - lacking details - expensive for the content.......2007-03-08

The book is good but I wish the author took time to go through the details, there are so many gaps that I needed to look elswhere to understand. It sees the author was in a hurry and that's not good - I found the examples had many errors, for instance, I could not get the struts to display, the author never took time to explained them properly. Too expensive for a tiny content.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference to learn struts.......2007-02-21

I found this book very clear and concise. I used it as a reference in my work and it has been of a great help to me.
        I highly recommend it!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-01-10

In my opinion, there aren't many great books out there on learning struts, that will also get you into some of the real life details and reality of struts programming. I went back in forth between this book and Ted Husted's Struts In Action (which is better but a few years older so not quite as up to date). Between the 2 of these books I've been able to get a fairly good understanding of struts and tiles.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!!.......2006-12-18

I bought this book based on the very positive reviews on this forum and I was not disappointed. I read the entire book from cover to cover and tested the sample code that can be downloaded from the publisher's website. With the exception of a single chapter (13), I was able to run all applications successfully with Tomcat. Note that there are a few errors in the code (not syntax but logical, so you don't see the desired result on the web page once you hit submit on the initial page) but these can easily be fixed. This book has a load of valuable information on Struts. While you do need patience to read it, it does not get boring at any point. Well deserved kudos to the author for doing an excellent job explaining Struts. Highly recommended to any one wanting to learn from Struts. If you have no experience with J2EE but you have experience with Java, do not start with this book as it might get too hard at times. Instead start with some thing more basic such as Head First Servlet and JSP and then move on to this book. If you already know JSPs and Servlets, then this book will teach you pretty much everything you need to know about Struts.

2 out of 5 stars Defeats its own goals.......2006-04-25

The author goes in to some detail about the philosophy of the book, how he intends to present it as a "action" oriented book, rather than a list of instructions. That's fine, but the actions that he presents are terrible.

I bought this book mostly to see what's changed since Struts 1, which is what I'm familiar with. I'm somewhat familiar with Struts 1.1, I've messed with DynaActionForm and some of the new validation features. So I know what Struts is capable of... and it's not this.

Struts is an excellent controller (the C in MVC), and it has a lot of really handy tags that you can use in your JSP pages. Where the author completely misses the mark is that he concentrates so heavily on the tags and very little on what makes Struts really powerful... its controller. That's not to say that he only concentrates on tags, he goes into great detail about integrating a database, writing a properties singleton, and other garbage that has nothing to do with struts.

He frequently uses a jsp page as the URL to visit to access a page. A good Struts implementation should rely COMPLETELY on Struts as its controller. This means that all of his pages should have been *.do pages. Not only does this allow for pre-render logic, but it means that you can switch out what JSP page you want to use without having to change your URL. It's pretty much the foundation of struts, and yet it's completely lost here.

Another thing I found missing was action-specific forwards. His action tags were almost all single, closed tags with no content in between. He opted instead to use global forwards for everything.

I'm not a genius, I obviously have something to learn about Struts if I'm still buying books. But Struts is about making things clean, abstracting the Model 1 grossness that JSPs introduced. This book is a piecemeal organization of some capabilities of Struts. Not only is this book lacking on any high-level struts capabilities, but I think it actually teaches bad programming.

5 out of 5 stars Making Learning Struts Easy.......2005-11-29

Jakarta Struts is a framework that helps in developing and maintaining web applications. Struts really shows its potential with larger web applications when multiple developers, UI artists, content specialists are working on an application.

And maintaining a Struts application is a breeze in comparison to JSP/Servlet configuration. The challenge with Sturts is the complexity in understanding the framework - the framework itself is not terribly complex but it makes it seem like a tedious way to develop a web application. Many developers start off learning Struts with a 'Hello World' example and are not terrible impressed by what they have to do to get it going.

Mr. Wiesner's book makes learning Struts much easier - as the benefits are given in examples upfront. Most readers loose interest if the benefits are not demonstrated and that is a great lost to the Struts framework.

This book is suitable for a reader who is familiar with Java/Tomcat and would like a great introduction to Struts. The examples lead a reader through setting up a Java web application and tips on enhancing productivity with Struts.

4 out of 5 stars A welcome introductory book to Struts.......2005-10-30

I enjoyed this book, both Mr. Wiesner’s style of writing, and the way topics were introduced. The chapters are easy to read, and I never felt I was being lectured to. In addition, Mr. Wiesner has kept information relevant to the topic at hand without digressing into background information that might confuse newcomers. From as early as the second chapter you are developing in Struts, using a simple internationalization example. The chapters gradually build up from there, each one introducing new concepts in easy to read sections. By the end of the book, you will have created a simple bookstore application.

Mr. Wiesner assumes knowledge of Java, JSP, and Servlets, and expects you to have set up your JDK, Web Container, and Database before beginning. With this rudimentary knowledge, his introduction to Struts makes sense and examples are given demonstrating the differences between calling standard Java code from within a JSP and using the Struts equivalents.

My only complaints with this book are that the downloadable source code has not been converted into English (while the source code in the book has been) - this does not cause a major problem since the downloadable code is still very readable, but it does mean that the downloadable code does not exactly match the published code. Another issue is that the errata page does not appear to be regularly updated.

All in all, a very good book, and a welcome introductory book to Struts.

4 out of 5 stars Does well to get you quickly coding in Struts..........2005-09-25

If you already have a Java background and are looking to learn how to use Struts for web apps, a good concise tutorial title would be Learning Jakarta Struts 1.2 by Stephan Wiesner.

Contents: Introduction to Struts; Hello Struts; The Struts Shop; Internationalization and Taglibs; Logging and Configuration; Forms; Logic; Exceptions; Controller and Templates; Putting It All Together; Struts Validator and Plug-In Classes; JSTL; Tools and Tricks; Solutions; Glossary; Literature; Index

This is a 200 page tutorial that assumes a basic background in your IDE of choice and Java in general. It's written well, but there's not a lot of hand-holding going on. The author dives right in and brings you up to speed on the concepts you need to know to work with Struts. The associated platform choices are all open source (like Tomcat and MySQL), so it won't cost you anything to get started. Conversely, the coverage of these other software packages aren't covered in great detail. You're told where you can download the software, and quickly how to install it. If you have problems, you'll probably need to check out other sources to fix them. The book follows a common development project throughout (a book store application), so it does a nice job of building on itself as it goes along. Couple that with the exercises sprinkled throughout the book, and you should be able to learn enough to become competent on the basics. For long-term Struts work, you'll probably want to get a Struts reference book or check out the project website. Still, as a first book to learn by doing, Learning Jakarta Struts fairs well...
