Book Description

Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Dvorak, Stravinsky, Messiaen . . . Men of genius as different as their music - but all inspired by deep spiritual convictions. Peter Kavanaugh uncovers the spirituality of twenty of music's timeless giants, revealing legacies of the soul as diverse as the masterpieces they created. Warmly written, beautifully illustrated, and complete with listening recommendations for each composer, Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers is a fascinating look at the inner flame that lit the works of these masters.

2 out of 5 stars Spiritual?.......2007-01-12

As one reads this book he must be alert to know the truth. Mr. Kavanaugh writes from a very broad and quasi-Christian viewpoint. His conclusion is that the majority, if not all the composers he writes about are Christian. He assumes all music written by these composers to be without flaw. As near as I can tell he believes that music is amoral. That is, he believes that music can not be right or wrong. This idea is at odds with the supposed Christianity of these composers. Oh, I'm sure many of them were believers. I can tell you though that not all are. And so you see my dilema. I love classical music and reading about the composers. However, I don't enjoy having to sift through a bunch of rubbish posing as spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for the novice.......2006-11-18

I purchased this book to expand my families appreciation for classical music. We are beginners, at best, and it's hard to know where to start to broaden your understanding. This book was VERY insightful. It is one thing to listen to the music and attempt to appreciate it, but to understand the perspective of the composer and the purpose of major pieces puts everything in a new light. I am really pleased with this purchase.

I loved it. Great stories. Great insights.

4 out of 5 stars A Gem for Music Lovers.......2006-01-20

This was a neat little book for folks that like classical music. It gives us something of the personal and spiritual sides of great composers, as well as short summaries of their musical careers. It was good to know something about them besides their names and music, and to get some nice tips on great music you might not be familiar with.

I found that Mozart was not quite the consummate party animal he is portrayed as in `Amadeus', the movie, at least not for his whole life. The author, Patrick Kavannaugh, asks us how each of us would like to have our lives put into biographies for public consumption. I know I would have to pass on that. I found that Haydn was happy and friendly, just like his music. Bruckner was a little hard too know, but well worth the effort to do so, just like his music. Folks like Beethoven, Wagner, and Liszt were very spiritual, though you don't hear much about that, and would not suspect so.

It was also surprising to me that most of them were Catholic, but I guess that makes sense since the Catholic Church has always been a great patron of the arts. Certainly, Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's Mass are two of the greatest choral pieces ever written.

The book was a little gem for those of us who like classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for Piano Teachers/Music Teachers.......2005-09-14

I used information from this book as a part of my weekly Piano Theory classes this past summer. Each week we studied and listened to music from a different pianist/composers. This added real-life understanding of the composers, as opposed to data and factual information from standard reference sources. After the summer classes were over, I gave copies of this book to each student as a gift. The composers came alive for them, and they learned about them in a personal way.

            Book Description

In 1996, veteran CBS News reporter and producer Bernie Goldberg committed the unpardonable sin of publicly mentioning the issue of liberal bias in the media. For that he became persona non grata at CBS. Goldberg tells how friends and colleagues turned on him, from junior CBS reporters all the way to Dan Rather. But much more than that, he exposes a bias so uniform and overwhelming that it permeates every news story we hear and read- and so entrenched and deep rooted that the networks themselves don't even recognize it.

A great book that verified much of what I had learned through my own dealings with the media. A real eye-opener if you want to see how things really work.

            4 out of 5 stars Goldberg's Golden Hour.......2007-08-19

"Bias" is Bernard Goldberg's best book. Once a CBS insider, Goldberg violated CBS' internal politics and chose to grind his axe in these pages. I'm glad he did. Goldberg chooses several key news stories from the 1990s and demonstrates how they were given a slanted portrayal by the television media. He never claims that anyone intentionally chose to distort the news. Rather, he claims that due to similar educational backgrounds and political affiliations most marquee-level TV reporters automatically view the world through a certain perspective which cannot help but influence their choice of words. This is the meaning of the word "bias" in the broadest sense, and this is what Goldberg addresses in his book.

As such, this is essential reading for anyone who cares about politics, journalism, or both. I've read it multiple times and find something new to enjoy in it each time. Back before the internet was in every home, this sort of bias went almost undetected and Goldberg deserves a lot of credit for writing this book and making a clear and unemotional case.

I don't know if it pays to dig deeper into Goldberg's canon, sadly. Despite his claims that he was in strong agreement with the liberal values of CBS, his post-"Bias" career has been staunchly in step with the equally biased Fox News and AM Talk Radio. As such, there's a sameness to his later writing (as well as the feeling that he is preaching toward the choir) that can't be found here. This doesn't diminish the power of this book at all; I mention it only as a caveat.

This book is a quick, worthwhile, and fun read. You'll also come back to it in the future, and it holds up very well to subsequent re-readings.

            1 out of 5 stars Biased Rant.......2007-07-23

Bernard Goldberg should have learned in childhood that when one points a finger, three fingers point back at oneself. From the very start of this rant, it is obvious that Goldberg's ego suffered from being in the shadow of other news anchors. The more he complains about others, the more one learns about Goldberg. He goes ad nauseum into recounting how he complained time after time about liberal bias, but the powers that be wouldn't listen to him. Perhaps that was due to the higher-ups' recognition of Goldberg's envious manipulation and whining. In reality, perhaps he was shunned in the end because of his own lack of professionalism.
There is very little of actual journalism presented by this so-called journalist. Somehow I am not surprised at all to find that Bernard Goldberg landed at Fox News. His style must fit right in. What is so laughable is that he wrote this entire book deploring bias and then went to work at the most blatantly biased news network.
He calls himself a liberal and from reading through the reviews here on Amazon, a number of readers bought Goldberg's assertion. What ever gave them the impression he was telling the truth about being a liberal? He gives himself away regularly as anything but a liberal. His social conscience is asserted, but not proven. I'm old enough to remember the emptying of the mental hospitals in California, the VietNam war and the increased numbers of homeless. If one actually goes back and looks at research on the economic and social effects of stripping first state and then federal funding for mental health in the 1970s-1980s, one will find that Reagan's policies started in California and moved across the states. There are very comprehensive discussions available on the internet of the complex economic and social pressures that have left countless mentally ill without care. Do some research, don't just accept Goldberg's opinions. Homelessness continued to be a problem discussed in the media under Clinton, although Goldberg denies that was the case.
Somehow, I don't think viewers are as stupid as Goldberg thinks they are. Most of us can pick up on slant. Goldberg never got to be the star he thought he deserved at CBS, so maybe the viewers will love him on Fox News, maybe not. At least he's free to be as biased as he wants to be now.

5 out of 5 stars It Had To Be Done!.......2007-07-20

Five stars to Bernard Goldberg for blowing the whistle on the Media for the monopolistic power group that it is and for revealing what it is. His story stems from the article that he wrote in the Wall Street Journal about bias in the news and reactions that came from it.

I am a former journalist and the son of a network executive and what Goldberg reveals is exactly the atmosphere and thinking in the Media culture, even within little papers in the "conservative" Midwest.

His comments about what happened at CBS are telling and his sections that give evidence about stories and comments that have been made in the press about race, feminist power and aids are important. He confirms it from within. Also telling are the anti-Christian and anti-conservative hate comments that are frequently made in the industry with no repercussions. Believe me the media culture are one of the most conformist in the world and they will destroy you if you counter their orthodoxy and social prejudices.

Goldberg reveals much of his worldview location as a liberal in which the meaning of the world liberal has changed.

Peoples lives have been destroyed by this power culture!
It must change and will change.

This is one of the most important whistle blower books of our time.

            4 out of 5 stars Courageous Revelations.......2007-09-10

This was a much needed book and it was extremely courageous of Goldberg to write it. The foundation for the book is an op-ed he wrote in the Wall Street Journal in February 1996. The op-ed chastised a CBS report that was clearly biased against a Republican presidential candidate; Goldberg stated that "The old argument that the networks and other "media elites" have a liberal bias is so blatantly true that it's hardly worth discussing anymore." Those comments upset his CBS employers and eventually led to his resignation five years later. This is the story of that op-ed, the reaction to it, especially from Dan Rather, and Goldberg's excellent defense of his comments. In the process, he talks about the severe hypocrisy and double standards that dominates the insulated members of the liberal media. Many in that liberal circle know the bias exists, yet don't care or openly deny it. What makes this a compelling story is it comes from a veteran insider who admits he's not a conservative, never voted for a Republican president, and still has liberal views. It is a quick, easy, and at times hilarious account of how one person decided to 'out' the liberal elites that dominate the information market. Necessary reading given the politicized nature of our society since 9/11.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent At Proving A Problem Exists, But No Real Solution Offered.......2007-07-01

"Bias" is an excellent book when it comes to proving there is a bias when it comes to news reporting. Goldberg starts with practical experience, which is shared in the first three chapters. The rest of the book gives proof.

Goldberg writes in a friendly, attention getting way. Also, he seems to give credit where it is due, instead of blasting his foes without qualifiers. For example, in a chapter dealing with hate speech (by those in the media), he points out all his examples were in "editorial" situations, and not given by someone who is at the time reporting the news.

Some books are written to prove there is a problem, while others are written to solve that problem (I won't mention those who try to deny that there is a problem). This book is in the first category. Goldberg effectively proves his point with actual occurances that we still see today. Unfortunately, he offers no suggestions as to solutions.

                Product Description

In his nearly 30 years at CBS News, Goldberg earned a reputation as a preeminent reporter in the TV news business. Now he blows the whistle on the news business.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars media bias worse than thought..........2004-11-10

Bernard Goldberg, a (former) longtime CBS reporter, argues that bias in the media is fundamental and pervasive. If what he says is true, you should distrust every nontrivial story from mainstream media.

He provides evidence that liberal media have distorted issues on (1) Islam and terrorism, (2) the flat tax, (3) the homeless, (3) AIDS, (4) child care, and (5) men.

He argues that liberal media distort the news because they have a liberal point of view (as reported by well-known surveys); news must now pay for itself; actors in news pieces must look like their primary audience-i.e., not black or Hispanic; and journalists' desire to change the world has resulted in advocacy journalism.

Goldberg also provides an explanation of how liberal media distort the news. They (1) simplify an issue by leaving out facts, (2) select liberal points of views through interviewing, (3) ignore other points of view, and (4) make an issue mainstream by misapplying studies and facts.

While this is not a scholarly work, anyone who knows how to operate Google should be able to verify his findings.

To identify media bias yourself, ask these questions: Who gets quoted in stories? What's their point of view? Is the other side quoted? Are liberal and conservatives described differently? Where do the facts come from? Is this the whole story?

Goldberg's prediction for the future of liberal media is not good. On his view, "the ship be sinking" for liberal media.

3 out of 5 stars Some Cheese With That Whine?.......2004-10-04

Bernard Goldberg is a highly respected journalist. The fact that he is and worked at CBS for 28 years makes this book about media bias a must read. He was clear about how bias exists and manifests itself at the three major television networks and various other newspaper and magazine outlets. He offered numerous examples but in some instances they don't seem to be the weightiest or juiciest that could be found. After 28 years I would have thought his grab bag of illustrations to make his point would have been running over. Plus, there is a noticeable element of whine and petulance to the entire book that made him a little repetitious, irritating and gives opportunity for critics to dismiss his fundamental premise as a flight of fancy or sour grapes. His attempts at humour fall like bad jokes from a standup. Overall the book is good but I was disappointed that it wasn't something to really get excited and write home about. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

Think the media are biased? CONSERVATIVES HAVE BEEN crying foul for years, but now a veteran CBS reporter has come forward to expose how liberal bias pervades the mainstream media. Even if you've suspected your nightly news is slanted to the left, it's far worse than you think. Breaking ranks and naming names, Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist Bernard Goldberg reveals a corporate news culture in which the close-mindedness is breathtaking, journalistic integrity has been pawned to liberal opinion, and "entertainment" trumps hard news every time. In his three decades at CBS, Goldberg repeatedly voiced his concerns to network executives about the often one-sided nature of the news coverage. But no one listened to his complaints-or if they did listen, they did nothing about the problem. Finally, Goldberg had no choice but to blow the whistle on his own industry, to break the code of silence that pervades the news business. Bias is the result. As the author reveals, "liberal bias" doesn't mean simply being hard on Republicans and easy on Democrats. Real media bias is the result of how those in the media see the world-and their bias directly affects how we all see the world. In Bias you'll learn: How on issues ranging from homelessness to AIDS, reporters have simply regurgitated the propaganda of pressure groups they favor, to the detriment of honest reporting The Peter Jennings test for classifying politicians-and how all the networks do it The network color bar-why so many "victims" on network news stories are blond-haired, blue-eyed, and middle class How one high-level CBS News executive told Goldberg that of course the networks tilt left-but in the next breath said he'd deny that statement if Goldberg ever went public One of the biggest stories of our time-and why you probably didn't hear about it on the evening news How political correctness in network newsrooms puts "sensitivity" ahead of facts
