Book Description

Silence, A Year from Monday, M, Empty Words and X (in this order) form the five parts of a series of books in which Cage tries, as he says, "to find a way of writing which comes from ideas, is not about them, but which produces them." Often these writings include mesostics and essays created by subjecting the work of other writers to chance procedures using the I Ching (what Cage called "writing through").

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting!!.......2007-02-17

This book is a work of art in itself. John Cage takes so many of his theories and applies them to his writing style, formatting, and type style. I suggest knowing a little about him before reading this book as it is a little easy to get lost in translation (figuratively speaking). Overall, it is definitely worth reading, and it is fairly affordable...a good addition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2002-05-09

Not just for musicians, but for anybody who is interested in music or philosophy. Cage's ideas presented in the work are fascinating in and of themselves, but even the manner in which he physically notates his thoughts on paper is amazing to see.

There's a common argument that his ideas (and this book) are overrated. I find this difficult to digest, especially when one considers the enormous impact Cage's writings and compositions have had on countless composers (basically anyone composing after 1950 has most likely taken a thing or two from the ideas in this book).

Sometimes he can be a little tough to follow in the book, as properly constructed sentences are not high up on Cage's list of priorities. However, this book has so much to offer that it is worth wading through the occasional slow spot.

So give it a whirl. Even if you don't like Cage's music, reading this book will give you insights into what he did that may change your mind or at least instill a newfound respect. At its best, this is inspiration of the highest sort.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Cage.......2001-08-17

I keep reading it year after year and I keep finding sections of it I've never seen before. magic. A the same time, I read the same part overs and over again years later and they just get better.

It's just a remarkable text.

You have to get it.

4 out of 5 stars This book is slightly overrated, actually.......2001-06-13

There is no denying the importance of John Cage as a composer as well as a writer. But even though this book is a necessary provocation for anyone who thinks they know what music is and should be, he is not a philosopher, and his ideas are often contradictory, naive and even romantic.

Romantic? Yes, I would say that for instance his idea of "sounds in themselves" and "nature" are romantic. Can we really eliminate all cultural impact and distortion just by refusing intention? I think not. Sounds are always inflected by history.

Still, I would not want a world without the challenge of his extreme stance.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Has Been The Same.......2000-05-20

It's always a strange sensation for me to go into a record store, or even see what's available here, and find so many John Cage recordings in print. As the most essential and avant-garde composer of the century, that's gratifying to me [a composer] but also unnerving that anyone so experimental and uncompromising in the arts would enjoy such popularity.

This book goes a long way towards explaining that. And in many ways, this book stands apart from his music, and can be enjoyed without ever hearing or knowing of Cage's music pieces. Because the music was almost by accident - Schoenberg told Cage that he was an inventor, not a composer, and this book demonstrates that, and goes further to show Cage was a philosopher. Music just happened to be the medium where he best expressed his philosophy, but it could have been painting or film, depending on his path. The book defines a way of living and thinking and seeing, and of course hearing, the world. That's what it's about. And it's beautiful and gentle quality capture the essence of Cage, a true quiet revolutionary. His revolution was profound, and best expressed in his piano piece 4'33", where the pianist does not make a sound at the instrument. The revolution of that event was the most profound and destabilizing in the history of music, and yet it was entirely silent. Such is the power of Cage's ideas that he has no need to really 'lecture' about them, he merely presents them and let's their own strength do the rest.

Lisa Crystal Carver, idol to millions of post-teen fans, has seen fit to collect the best of the first 16 issues of her zine. As self-appointed leader of Generation L, she teaches us that "you don't have to be beautiful to be naked;" asks Liz Phair if she had to give the president of her record company a blowjob in order to get a contract; records a fight that Courtney Love had with Kurt Cobain while she was talking on the phone to Lisa; and presents a world of sex, blood, and the joy of horseback riding. The best thing about having several years worth of Rollerderby in one volume is that you get to watch Lisa's progression from slutty, fag-hag, performance artist to refined, suburban mother.

this is undoubtedly one of THE BEST BOOKS OF ANY TIME. that's not a casual compliment. everything you need is in there. take it seriously and come back to it again and again. maybe best read over breakfast every morning. or dinner. or over biscuits in the evening. or over a cigarette. or in the bath. or in the bed.
it's a holy book. everything you need to know is in all the trashy trash in it; trust it.

let me tell you, after reading the reviews of this book i was anxious to get ahold of a copy. i was turned on to lisa carver because she once dated bill callahan of "smog", who i adore. i thought it would be interesting and stimulating, and i suppose some would describe it as that. however, i found it awful. i can't imagine why anyone would say this book made them intimidated to write for fear of not being as good. it was pathetic really. full of a couple of girls who really needed to feel, accepted? to impress the masses with their raunchy escapades. we've heard it all before, haven't we? they dis courtney love, but really i think they want to be just like her. or what they perceive her to be anyway? i'm only glad there wasn't anything in there that made me lower my opinion of smog-boy.

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Carver makes you want to write...just like her........1999-11-11

Books make me want to write. Good books make me want to write well, and funny books make me want to write with wit. Good and funny books are especially enchanting and threaten to change my whole life, because writing well is difficult enough without humor, so now I have to do both things. Such books make me miserable because I can't even do one of them. When I first read Woody Allen I wanted to master the non-sequitur and lead the reader through a maze of the underexpected. Then, when I read Heller I wanted to write run-on sentences. Nicholson Baker made me want to ponder wonderously about the mundane, and endlessly catalogue the minutae of my unspecial surroundings. DeBernierre made me want to write trilogies of hilarious and mythical characters who all sleep with eachother. Russo made me want to write sympathetically about small town life and middle-aged people. And others made me want to write yet other things. Of course, wanting to write and successfully pulling it all off are two completely different things, and I make no claims of having accomplished the latter. My correspondence has improved, though, and that's something! But now I have found a new influence, and she is Lisa Carver. In fact, one might say that I am under her influence - luckily there aren't Check-Stops for these types of things. I want to write just like Lisa about all the strange and funny things that I and my friends encounter in day to day life except that my life and my friends are not like hers (and yours aren't, either!) so I can never write like her. I can never be like her. I have reached that bottomless feeling that people get when they meet someone who is better at everything than they are. Might as well just give it up and watch them do it instead. Because of Lisa I don't write to my friends as much because she has made me miserably unable to write like her. I require her friends and her life. I am hooked! Help!

this book is amazing. the zine was amazing. and now you can replace all your other peices of coffee table reading, cuz this is THE one! you loooove pop culture, judith krantz novels.. white trash.... what more can i say. it'll knock you out, first round.

Marvin Kaye's "The Handbook of Mental Magic" is one of the best books to begin for those who wish to learn about mental magic. Not only does he cover the basics of most mental magic, he also gives new and interesting twists to some standard effects. Check out his effect "In Stygian Depths" to see how effects can be dressed up. In addition to many great effects, one of the best things about this book is its bibliography. I have used that bibliography to expand my library of magic and related mental areas. I can't recommend this book to highly for those interested in a basic foundation for mental magic and a great bibliography to expand on this interesting field of magic. The only weakness this book has, if any, is that it is dated and does not have some of the newer material in the bibliography

"TCP/IP sockets in C# is an excellent book for anyone interested in writing network applications using Microsoft .Net frameworks. It is a unique combination of well written concise text and rich carefully selected set of working examples. For the beginner of network programming, it's a good starting book; on the other hand professionals could also take advantage of excellent handy sample code snippets and material on topics like message parsing and asynchronous programming."

The popularity of the C# language and the .NET framework is ever rising due to its ease of use, the extensive class libraries available in the .NET Framework, and the ubiquity of the Microsoft Windows operating system, to name a few advantages. TCP/IP Sockets in C# focuses on the Sockets API, the de facto standard for writing network applications in any programming language. Starting with simple client and server programs that use TCP/IP (the Internet protocol suite), students and practitioners quickly learn the basics and move on to firsthand experience with advanced topics including non-blocking sockets, multiplexing, threads, asynchronous programming, and multicasting. Key network programming concepts such as framing, performance and deadlocks are illustrated through hands-on examples. Using a detailed yet clear, concise approach, this book includes numerous code examples and focused discussions to provide a solid understanding of programming TCP/IP sockets in C#.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but..........2007-09-05

This book is a good intermediate to somewhat advanced book on TCP and UDP protocols using Sockets in .Net - all examples of-course as the title suggests are in C#. It does show some interesting examples and was able to get me started using Sockets in .Net - however it didn't go as far as I had hoped. But if you're needing something to show you how to start using Sockets it is a very good book.

I think this book is very good because es simple, explain clearly and go directly to the matter.

Did you ever just want a book get to the point and tell you what you need to know? This is that book. If your new to winsock, this book will get you rolling quickly.

                        5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-09-03

I've read through the first couple of chapters and I must say this is a good book. The thing I like most about this book is that the authors take time to not only give you working code but explain what the heck blocks within the programs do. If you are a novice programmer you may want to pick up a different book because it does assume you have a good understanding of basic C# programming.

                        4 out of 5 stars A good practical manual.......2005-12-08

This book teaches TCP Socket programming using C# in a very efficient step-by-step manner.
Unlike many other books on .NET that I have, this one does not just give you code samples and leave you to scratch your head trying to figure out what's going on there. Instead, it analyzes all code samples line-by-line, leaving you virtually no questions to ask.

I gave this book 4 stars only because I was particularly interested in using multithreading with sockets for the project I'm working on, and this book's chapter on threading is surprisingly weak.

Other than that, it's a great manual to start with if you need to learn how to write socket apps in .NET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, its a must have........2007-06-11

This book gives you an amazing jump start in socket programming, the language is very easy to understand and very clear.

                        All the examples just work!.

My only concern was that this book does not cover unix domain sockets and link layer sockets such as AF_LOCAL and AF_LINK.

I strongly recommend buying this book.

                        thanks,

5 out of 5 stars The best intro to socket programming on C.......2007-06-09

Before I got this book I thought writing C programs, that interfaced with TCP/IP sockets, was hard, but with this book in ones reach nothing could be simpler. With the help of this book and the HTTP Pocket Reference: Hypertext Transfer Protocol I was able to write a simple Web server.

The way book gives you the sample codes as complete listing and afterwards dissecting it line by line worked for me.

4 out of 5 stars Sockets for the Programmer.......2007-01-10

As a self taught programmer who formalized his hip-pocket knowledege with a formal degree in Semi-Conductor Physics and Applied Electrical Engineering, I still appreciate a easy to read and understandable treatise on any programming subject. This little book is packed full of relevent information and programming snippets to aid even the most basic of programmers. Sometimes even the multi-degreed can be taught or refreshed in a subject. These authors provide a lot of information in a small form factor. It is concise and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn or relearn the programming of TCP/IP sockets.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Supplement.......2006-05-02

This is a great book if you are looking for a decent introduction to the Sockets API or just a quick reference. Prior knowledge of C programming and networking concepts is required. It is very easy to read, and not overwhelming like the Stevens book. It covers TCP and UDP sockets as well as name resolution. Money well spent.

                        5 out of 5 stars Good service.......2005-09-26

This was my first shop at Amazon and I had lot of expectations.
I can happily say tell that I am very happy with the service provided by Amazon.com . This is why people should trust great companies.

                        Anyway, ...

The is in excellent quality. It is a good start for anyone who has knowledge of C (or perhaps of C++) language and wants to learn about networking. Good explanations of the functionalities.

                        I am satisfied.
