Book Description
In Roomanitarian, popular author, actor, musician, and spoken-word artist Henry Rollins returns to the combative prose that has won him critical acclaim and a legion of devoted fans. The book is divided into three parts: The first section, "Walking the Chasm,” written in the form of a poem, epitomizes Rollins’s beautifully stark, hard-hitting style. The second part, "Ended," is a series of short prose pieces reminiscent of Solipsist. Finally, the biting humor and social commentary Rollins is renowned for is on full display in "To Ann Hitler with Love," a series of mock love letters to a fictional woman who bears a striking resemblance to conservative pundit Ann Coulter.

Dark but good.......2007-09-30
This is the first of his written works that I have read, it is definitly dark but still extremely good.
Henry... what happened!?!?!.......2007-07-22
I've followed Henry Rollins from his time with Black Flag. I've been reading his books since the 90's. I've seen him with his band in concert, spoken word dates, and his watered down comedy central special.
This book is a big disappointment. The majority of this book is a ripping of the Bush Administration. Whether or not it deserves the literary bashing that Henry lavishes on it, is beside the point. Henry does make some good points but the vitriol contained in the book seems to go against all of his previous works on hate. He has fully immersed himself in his hate of the Bush Administration; if I wanted to read this there are a lot of other (and better) books I could have spent my money on.
I appreciate his work and while I can't hold this book with the same esteem as "Black Coffee Blues" and "Art to Choke Hearts / Pissing in the Gene Pool" it has some good points.
Cutting and Funny........2006-07-18
In his second foray into fiction, Henry Rollins does not disappoint. From his scathing treatment of the Bush administration to his nutty faux paean to Anne Coulter Rollins, is by turns witty brutal and unforgiving. If you are already a Rollins fan you'll find his explorations into human darkness as (if not more) compelling and powerful as they always have been. Those new to Rollins work, hold on and enjoy the ride. Overall this is a good read with tight pacing, an interesting structure and the mental image of Barbara Bush saying "Boo-YA!" alone is worth the price of admission.
The Best!.......2006-05-07
First I want to apologize to Henry..I was the one {the only one} who gave Henry's other book Broken Summers a one star rating..I was "blinded by the right" at the time and I was believing the lies we were fed about the war and other things..but now after snapping out of my ignorance I feel Broken Summers is one of his best books..
Roomanitarian is a return to his style of his other masterpiece Solipsist..This is the kind of book you want to use a highlighter on..I wanted to remember the unique way of Henry's social commentary and observations..Classic Rollins!..A fantastic read and as always Henry delivers!..Also,watch The Henry Rollins Show on IFC
An important book.......2006-02-20
This 2005 work from Henry Rollins is different from some his more familiar journal-based works, like "Get in the Van" and "Black Coffee Blues." It is a collection of topical works, quite wide-ranging in both tone and subject.
One of the two main threads to be discerned in "Roomanitarian" is Rollins' adoption of another persona to explore various ideas and personalities. For example, separate sections of the chapter "Ended" have him writing first as a plastic-surgery-addicted inhabitant of a gated community, and later as a Russian citizen comparing recent American history to life under Stalin.
These vignettes provide a dizzying and poignant read. Imagine Kierkegaard if he had been born to a single runaway teen and been left for dead in a dumpster behind an L.A. McDonalds.
There are hints among these short pieces of greater things to come. Two must-read sections of "Ended" have Rollins wielding a command of fiction-craft that is much deeper and mature than one would suspect from his journal-based works.
The first is a short story that begins with a man and woman on plane discovering common interests, but which develops through surprising shifts of perspective. Another extended section has Rollins evoking a stark, David-Lynchian atmosphere as a man's everyday surroundings become increasingly ominous. My hope is that these portend a novel from Rollins at some point.
Another main strand through "Roomanitarian" addresses this question: How can a guy who draws sellout crowds to his gut-busting spoken word manage to bring his talent for humor to the page without trying to duplicate his live act? The answer: satire.
Rollins' written work has always provided source material for his talking gigs, but hearing or going to the gigs was always necessary for really catching the humor in his stories. He was never one to include the little one-liners and non-stop quipping that career humor-writers do. The fun was in the live delivery.
But now comes "Roomanitarian." Through the use of satire he has managed to write a book that is funny without seeming forced. None of that Dave Barry insert-punchline-here hackery.
Satire is criticism and it is also humor. Rollins is a critic of culture and politics, but he has never set himself up as a great arbiter of truth. You read his criticism somewhat like you would listen to a crude but shrewd guy down the street. There are gems of wisdom, but you don't expect some grand treatise.
However, with Rollins, your "guy down the street" is one who has packed about three lifetimes into one. The signal to noise ratio is accordingly much higher.
Both in the satirical pieces and in the fictional ones, readers will discover a political edge in "Roomanitarian." From his first Reagan-era book "2.13.61," Rollins has always had a few nasty things to about those in power. In this latest work the anger comes to a white-hot head. In the "Letters to whitey," "To Ann Hitler," and in several sections of "Ended," Rollins applies a keen blade to the throat of the Bush administration and its supporters. He seems to channel the anger of millions of us who felt betrayed by the farcical Iraq War and 2004 election.
Here is a quote from a standout Jeremiad in "Ended," clearly directed at Bush: "Do you know what parents consider themselves when they bury their sons? Failures. Will you admit that you never knew what you were doing and you were never ready to give what you made others give? That you are and always will be a coward? A weakling who preaches strength, who sends in the best to do the worst." (p.8)
"Roomanitarian" is an important part of Rollins' output in many ways. It will be seen as a transitional book for Rollins. It will be a book in which one can discern several lines of his later development maturing.

The Comics Journal has, for 25 years, reigned as the world's premier magazine covering the art of comics. With its fiercely independent editorial stance and its unashamedly high-falutin' aesthetic standards, the Journal has been the recipient of numerous awards and libel suits over the last quarter century. Its interview subjects reads like a Who's Who of the cartooning profession from Jules Feiffer and Ralph Steadman to R. Crumb and Art Spiegelman.
Twice a year the Journal is published in a special "coffee table" edition, a cross between a magazine and an art book, combining the magazine's patented journalistic and scholarly featureswide-ranging interviews, iconoclastic criticism, and scholarly essayswith new comic strips by the most innovative cartoonists working today. The 2002 Summer Special spotlights master cartoonist Jim Woodring with a spectacular cover painting, two essays on the artist's oeuvre by Donald Phelps and Kenneth Smith, and an interview. Text-and-art features include an appreciation of the cartoonist W.E. Hill by Zippy-creator Bill Griffith (with many examples of Hill's gorgeous tabloid-sized Sunday pages) and an expansive appreciation of Jack Kent's King Aroo strip.
Our comics section's theme this volume is "Cartoonists on Music and Musicians" and we expect many of last volume's contributors which included R. Crumb, Charles Burns, Mary Fleener, Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Megan Kelso, Tony Millionaire, Dave Cooper, and Art Spiegelmanto be back, as well as a few new names and faces. Black-and-white illustrations throughout; 60 pages in full color.

Challenge your Brain and Expand your Mind.......2006-07-25
Solving logic puzzles is an active way of developing your thinking power. The puzzles in this book are all of a formal logic nature, requiring that you think a problem through and reason deductively in arriving at the solution. Each section on this book contains a different type of logic puzzle, and each presents a different kind of challenge. They also share one thing, they all contains false statements which must be identified before you can come with the correct solutions.
If one needs assistance in solving a particular puzzle or type of puzzle, the hints section will be helpful. The solutions section presents considerations in solving each problem. For each puzzle, these describe an appropriate method to use to arrive at the solution. These will be helpful in solving puzzles of the same type.
The stories that describes the situations associated with each puzzle are developed in the backwards, wrong-way, mixed-up Kingdom of Lidd. If you like solving challenging puzzles, you will enjoy the adventures you will face in this book.
Challenging False Logic Puzzles.......2000-06-28
Although this book is interesting, not all of the problems made sense. The ones that I could understand were well-written, so I give this book 4 stars.

They're tough. They're varied. And they all contain at least one false statement. They're False Logic Puzzles and this batch is set in many mysterious locales. These "mind-benders" are much more complicated than other games, often requiring the use of diagrams and the Hints Section. Good luck! 96 pages, 56 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.

Customer Reviews:
It's a firewall book.......2007-05-12
Needed it for class. This book uses Cisco syntax. It's a decent reference, although it's easier to find information on an internet search. This book is not organized that well and has poorly named titles making it hard to search the index for specific information.
Network Security Book.......2007-05-12
This is an excellent book. Authors do not assume that you already know. So, every network element is explained in details from a security perspective.
Four stars if reorganized and distilled, five if updated.......2006-08-30
I first looked at Inside Network Perimeter Security, 2nd Ed (INPS:2E) for my blog, in May 2005. I decided to try reading it this week because I've been reading books on related topics. Individually, the INPS:2E authors largely know their craft. Unfortunately, the book is so poorly organized and diffused that I don't know why other reviewers rate it so highly. Furthermore, the choice of material covered and certain recommendations drag the book down. A third edition might be promising, but I recommend avoiding INPS:2E.
On the macro level, I question the ordering of the book's parts. It's best to lead with definitions, policy, and design, but that doesn't happen here. Part I is mostly about firewalls, with a chapter about policy at the end (Ch 5). Fundamentals of Secure Perimeter Design (Ch 12) appears in Part III (Designing a Secure Network Perimeter). Another design chapter (Ch 23) pops up in Part IV. This makes no sense. The book should have been divided into Theory / Implementation / Processes or some other rational system, with all related material in the proper place.
For example, the operation of FTP (control vs data channels, active vs passive FTP, etc.) is separated into three chapters (2, 3, and 4). FTP should have been explained early in one place, then referenced later. Host IPS appears as part of Ch 11, when it should have been in Ch 10 (Host Defense Components). VPNs appear in Ch 7 and again in Ch 16. TCP state is explained in Ch 3 (Stateful Firewalls), when it should have been covered in Ch 2 (Packeting Filtering) or in a different and earlier section. Yet another firewall -- Pf -- isn't shown until Ch 10 (which covers host defense). Ch 6 (The Role of a Router) covers routers, but Ch 2 mostly covered using routers for filtering.
Beyond organization, the book's choice of technical material is sometimes questionable. INPS:2E spends a good deal of time on reflexive ACLs, even though Cisco recommends using CBAC instead. INPS:2E mentions CBAC but gives no implementation details. Worse, the extrusion RACL suggestion on p 51 allows outbound FTP control (port 21 TCP) but makes no provision for FTP data channels. Ch 19 promotes the virtues of Big Brother, a monitoring tool that's been declining for years since its acquisition. Nagios should have been covered instead. When I also see discussions of IPChains (Ch 2) and FWTK (Ch 4), I question the relevancy of the text.
Despite these problems, most of the book's technical recommendations are sound. I found fault with a few suggestions, e.g. "a good way to improve security is to disable SSID broadcasts on all wireless access points" (p 364). I did like the tip on changing Windows MAC addresses on p 365.
If a third edition is planned, I would like to see a ground-up rewrite. A lead author should plan the chapters of the book, including a rough outline of each chapter's contents. Experts can work within that framework, and then have the lead author edit for consistency and coherency. As it stands, INPS:2E reads more like a collection of disparate thoughts loosely bound by a network security theme. If the existing material was rewritten with clarity and structure in mind, the book would probably be 350-400 pages (not 660).
Richard Deal's Cisco Router Firewall Security, while Cisco-centric, is a better book on this subject. The older Security Sage's Guide to Hardening the Network Infrastructure is helpful. Sean Convery's Network Security Architectures might be the best of all.
WOW!.......2006-04-17
What a book...As a relative new comer to IT security I'm digesting all I can lay my hands on. This book by SANS Institute is a rare gem. It starts easy and escalates subject by subject. This is the kind of book where I read a chapter, think about it for a week or so, then pick it up for another chapter. There's just too much for me to blast through, and gather all the knowlege. I award 5 stars and I'm not even finished yet
Excellent book at discussing how to defend your network perimeter.......2006-02-05
This review is for the 2nd edition of this book.
"Inside Network Perimeter Security" (INPS) by Northcutt, Zeltser, Winters, Kent, and Ritchey suitably covers the broad topic of securing a network's edge. The book is based, on part, from various SANS Institute training material (Northcutt is the CEO of the SANS Institute). Most of the items documented in INPS are honed from years of discussions in classes (and is mentioned an `excellent supplementary resource" for the GIAC Certified Firewall Analyst (GCFW)).
The book first focuses on perimeter fundamentals - including dedicating about 100 pages to the three main types of firewalls (Packet, Stateful & Proxy). The second section discusses how to fortify other areas of the perimeter - by implementing hardened routers and hosts, VPNs, IDSs, and IPS. The third section discusses designing a secure perimeter from the ground up (consider it best practices). This includes a much-needed chapter on wireless security. The last section is how to monitor and maintain the perimeter.
It is hard to characterize who this book should be aimed at. While configurations examples are given for many different platforms and OSs, the configs cannot be considered complete. I feel this book would serve network admins well as a starting point and as introduction to concepts that they might not be familiar with.
Some items I like from Inside Network Perimeter Security:
-Chapter 6 gives a great discussion on Cisco routers. What really impresses me is, since the documentation is from someone besides CiscoPress, you get an idea of other ways to harden Cisco routers (see the telnet trick on page 142). The first appendix also gives a great collection of different ACLs (consider it an update of the NSA's list). I have over 50 CiscoPress books, and information found in these 2 chapters I have not seen documented in any CiscoPress book.
-Chapter 21 provides a `quick' list of tools to use to help troubleshoot and isolate an issue. While there are some great books that are wholly dedicated to showing the ins-and-outs of different tools, sometimes you can't see the trees through the forest. Within just a few short pages, INPS is able to suggest a plethora of different tools to use based upon the issue.
The book mentions that it's goal "...is to create a practical guide for designing, deploying, and maintaining a real-world network security perimeter." I believe they have done just that!
I give this book 5 pings out of 5:

Submarines handle awkwardly on the surface of the sea; airplanes are cumbersome when taxiing. Both modes of operation, however, are design requirements. Organizational computer networks have a similar requirement: they have to interface with other networks (thereby forming the Internet) in order to be useful. How network engineers manage their networks' perimeters has a lot to do with their usefulness, cost effectiveness, and--perhaps above all--security. Inside Network Perimeter Security concerns itself with this latter aspect of the connection to the outside world. It's carefully researched, cleverly written, and full of references to recent exploits and, more importantly, the trends they represent. The best details on emerging hack attacks will always be found online. This book takes a longer view, evaluating offensive and defensive technologies and offering well-reasoned advice on how to keep a network secure now and in the future.
Readers familiar with the previous work of the authors--particularly the highly respected Stephen Northcutt--will recognize the style here. It doesn't aim to teach you how to do much in particular--there are a few procedures, and some Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command listings--but rather tries to show how to think about networks and the data that comes from them. In a typical section, the authors analyze a log from Tiny Personal Firewall. They highlight the facts that are present in the log and the inferences that can be made from them. A similar style helps you master software tools and make network design decisions. This book is perfect for a network engineer wanting to improve his or her security skills for both design and administration purposes. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to design networks' borders for maximum security, and how to monitor them for unauthorized activity. After an introduction to firewalls, packet filtering, and access lists, the authors explain how to set up routers, special-purpose firewalls, and general-purpose hosts with security in mind. A large section has to do with security-conscious design, both for green field projects and existing networks that need expansion or improvement.

Great Book on SMB Network Security.......2006-03-13
This is a great book for seasoned IT professionals that want to learn how to secure small and medium sized networks.
As others have said, if you want to read only one book, this is the one. The authors did a great job of describing concepts and relevant low level details and tools.
I enjoyed reading most of it, but I skimmed parts that described processes that seasoned engineers have applied countless times.
Highly recommended!
Excellent.......2005-09-10
Very, very good.
All the most important subjects of perimeter security, remote access, resources separation are addressed.
TCP protocol details are clearly part of the explanation, therefore the more you know of it the better it is.
Useful links and vendor specific technology references are also included, like Microsoft, Cisco and so on.
Excellent.
A very informative read.......2005-01-27
Stephen Northcutt, and the various contributing authors, have created a masterful and well rounded guide of the various considerations that go into securing the network perimeter. As a student of Information Technology this book has been instrumental in my education and has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf (when it is not in my hands directly).
If you want to buy just one book, buy this one........2005-01-24
Stephen Northcutt has done a great job! this is the most comphrensive book on the subject. I particularly found the part on access lists very helpful. Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP
Fairly decent but can be thinned out a bit.......2004-03-02
Fairly decent overview of perimeter security. If your a security professional you may learn a thing or two, if your a network administrator and your idea of security is a firewall then this book is meant for you. Its a fairly easy read, but some of the examples of the commands to enter in configuring routers and hosts could be eliminated. I felt the author was just taking up space with these examples. (not a big deal but I'm taking a star away on principal) I also felt the author could have gone into a little be more detail in the VPN chapter, especially when dealing with encryption, PKI, and authenication which I felt was glossed over. (again not a big deal, but when you call yourself the definitive guide, be more definitive and save the 'commands' for the user guides")
