Book Description
Neil Peart, drummer for the legendary rock band Rush, is often recognized as one of the world's greatest drummers. This photo book features intimate portraits of Peart as captured by professional photographer Carrie Nuttal (who is also Peart's wife.)
Customer Reviews:
Must have for fans of the Band Rush.......2007-05-12
A spactacular tribute to the greatest drummer of all time. Neil is captured in black and white photos by his wife Carrie. The artistic use of light and dark contrasted to the subject who has defined musicality of rythum is amazing. I have been a fan of Rush and Neil Peart for a long time and have seen them over 40 times in concert. I have been a serious amature photographer for even longer and find this example of the combination of my love of music especially Rush and photography has hit a perfect 10 out of 10. Don't miss this fine piece of work!
Rhythm & Light- true revelation.......2007-05-09
I ordered this book after reading Peart's Roadshow. My son is a drummer and has chosen drumming as his future profession, or should I say it seems to have chosen him some time ago. I wanted to see the photos taken of someone who is known for his chosen solitude. I also wanted to see the photos taken by someone who was in love with their subject, but trying to discover this secret passion, warts and all, without being a stumbling block in the process of capturing the reality.
Great photos. I think my favorite photos are Magic and Shattered. Magic is reminiscient of the expression I see when my son is playing "in the zone" and Shattered is a photo I hope to purchase one day for my son.
This is a great gift for any Peart fan/drummer. A must have for any drummer's coffee table, or should I say "the large drum pad on legs sitting in their living room".
Just OK.......2005-11-02
I bought this for my husband who has been a RUSH fan forever and I was very much looking forward to seeing the book myself. Also a strange coincidence is the author and new Mrs. Peart was a grade under me in High School and while we were not friends because we weren't in the same grade or had the same circle of friends, I do remember seeing her around and remember her to be quite a nice person. The book had been on backorder FOREVER - longer than 6 months, with the ship date being changed several times. Although, overall I think the book is nice, I think it lacks substance. I'm not a professional photographer, but I do like to look at pictures that are clear and in focus, regardless of the subject. Alot of the pictures were fuzzy, and I just don't understand why that was. I would have liked to see more pictures in focus - it would have make it much more interesting. Also, what really annoyed me, was the condition the book arrived in. Multiple scratches all over the book jacket. It was packed nicely, so it must have happened prior to shipping. A good collector's item for an avid RUSH fan, but still a little disappointing.
interesting book........2004-07-17
i find this book to be interesting. Love the art style of using light to show the rhymic patterns. Brilliant. After reading this, I am inspired to try out some of the techniques.

Book Description
Light and time are key environmental components for the majority of organisms. Biologically, time operates at various scales, ranging from the annual cycle of seasons, to the daily cycle of the sun, to the potentially rapid cycle of cell division. What is apparently fundamental to all organisms is the ability to respond in a manner predictive of time. Time-dependent changes in physiology, morphology, and ecology are responsive to various environmental cues, the most significant of which is light. The ability of organisms to perceive, harvest, and protect themselves from light is also of fundamental importance, leading to a variety of biological responses including phototaxis and photosynthesis. This volume, which concentrates primarily but not exclusively on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, provides a series of chapters that explore various aspects of the underlying biology of organisms' reactions to light and time. The volume provides a wide-ranging and up-to-date review of this fundamental area of biology, which is currently advancing at a rapid pace.
Book Description
The 100th birthdays of George and Ira Gershwin (in 1898 and 1896, respectively) are being celebrated around the world. The centennials are the perfect occasion to reflect on the brothers' rich legacy to American theater music. "The Man I Love," "Fascinating Rhythm," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "A Foggy Day"--together they wrote 700 songs and dozens of shows that defined an age and revolutionized the musical theater. Essential to any consideration of their achievement is Deena Rosenberg's Fascinating Rhythm, the only book to closely examine the brothers'extraordinary collaboration.
First published in 1991, this pioneering work--which grew out of extensive interviews with Ira Gershwin and draws on much unpublished material from his archives--provides an interpretation and critical history of the Gershwin opus. Focusing on the major songs and shows and on the creative process that produced them, Rosenberg traces the development of the Gershwins' vocabulary, voice, subject, and viewpoint as they evolved from song to song. She illuminates how words and music work together in each song to create a small one-act play that encompasses a satisfying emotional and dramatic action.
Rosenberg also expertly places the Gershwins in their creative and social context, highlighting their innovations, their own growth as mature artists, and their relationship to their times. And she outlines Ira's productive career following the untimely death of his brother in 1937.
Filled with musical examples, Iyrics, and photographs, this rich portrait will fascinate any musical theater lover.
"Packed with terrific insights that will delight those who care about this music." --New York Times Book Review
Deena Rosenberg is the founding chair of the Musical Theatre Program, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. A cultural and music historian, she is coauthor of The Music Makers and has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, High Fidelity, and other publications.
Customer Reviews:
Stunningly beautiful, intelligent, fun, and engaging.......1999-12-10
When this book came out I was graduating from college with atheatre degree. A little lost, but in love with a recording of StrikeUp the Band, I bought this book. This beautiful book gripped me,delighted me and enchanted me. 7 years later, I'm writing my dissertation on musical theatre, with my first chapter (and my favorite) on the Gershwins. Deena Rosenburg's book is a model of what musical theatre biographies can be--history on the authors, the shows and the times. I won't wreck the ending for you, but it is one of the only non-fiction books I could say that about. I spent a week as spellbound as I was when reading The Lord of the Ring, and I will always hold this up as a fabulous book to introduce anyone to musical theatre and a joy. Bravo! END

Book Description
Our knowledge of the circadian clock in plants has advanced considerably in recent years and we now have a clearer view of the biochemical processes making up its mechanism. Recent work provides insight into the central role played by the circadian system in the regulation of many aspects of metabolism. The multiple systems involved in photoreception have been determined, leading to an understanding of how light entrains the internal biological clock to the natural cycle of day and night, and how this impacts on key events in the plant lifecycle, such as the photoperiodic regulation of flowering. This book provides a contemporary overview of endogenous plant rhythms for researchers and professionals in the plant sciences. It will also serve as a valuable source of reference for the wider circadian community.

Book Description
Photographer and author Jim Jamieson illustrates through film the rhythms of light and land across millions of acres of national parks, wildlife refuges, and unprotected lands. Blending photographic techniques, equipment, conservation and preservation themes, the natural rhythms of light and land come to life in some our most cherished national parks and refuges.
Customer Reviews:
The next best thing to being there.......2004-12-01
The bottom line here is absolutely incredible photography. Of course that's the only way to try to present the sheer beauty of the national parks to the reader. Although the name is National Parks and Wildlife Refuges it also includes seven state park areas in Indiana, South Dakota, and Minnesota. With parks as diverse as the Badlands, Great Smoky Mountains, White Sands, and Yellowstone, the color, light, and patterns are diverse and spectacular. There is little information provided about the parks but it does include maps of where the state parks are located and information on each of the photographs. This is a beautiful book just to spend time looking through and a wonderful introduction to the scenic beauty of our national parks. Our National Parks and Wildlife Refuges is a highly recommended book.
A truly breathtaking compendium of natural photography.......2004-07-18
Our National Parks And Wildlife Refuges: Capturing The Rhythms Of Light And Land is a truly breathtaking compendium of natural photography of scenes from America's national parks and wildlife refuges, from Custer State Park to Indiana Dunes, Yellowstone, and much more. Captivating views of sunrise, wild animals, untamed forest and much more dominate this colelction, which offers a brief text embellishment to its genuinely captivating images.
Awesome.......2004-07-11
On par with the great photographers of our time. Stunning photos of our parks and natural heritage.

Cases in Bioethics: Selections from the Hastings Center Report
ASIN: 0415180503 |
Book Description
Brain Mystique Light and Dark bridges the gap between neuroscience, brain evolution and consciousness by examining scientific models of how the brain becomes conscious. The book argues that the spiritual dimension of life is compatible with scientific naturalism. Not bound by conventional stereotypes, Charles Don Keyes safeguards the unity of brain/mind, synthesized from a wide range of sources, reinterprets the triune brain concept and self-reference models of consciousness.
Customer Reviews:
Srange book........2002-04-05
This is a weird book. I got it because I am intereste din consciousness studies, and in the reviews and summary it seemed to involve some things on scientific theories of consciousness, and brain science as well. But it turned out to be a really strange piece of philosphy. The author tries to put together Mcleans truine brain hypothesis with some Kantian moral philosophy and some PLatonist considerations. I know some Kant and PLato, but unfortunately almost no philosophy of music or aesthethics, and the book goes into these things. I have to say it is really confusing.
The book starts with the claim that materialism is true. Then it exposes the truine brain hypothesis, and extends it to explain some human morality. Afterwards there is a brief account of scientific theories of consciousness, involving mainly "resonance" and self-reference. Theories like Reentry (Edelman) or oscilation (Crick) and even quantum reduction (Penrose) are discussed, but not throughly nor interestingly. The author just points out that some theories involve self-reference, and somehow thinks that that is a key towards understanding the human condition.
Later, there appears talk on music and aesthetics. Somehow, the soul exists by symbolically (Kantian sense) aprehending aesthetics and PLatos "the good and the just". The author holds that this idea of the soul is compatible with materialism, and somehow links religion to aesthetic issues. This is by far the strangest part of the book. It is not clear to me why aesthethics should do all that, but of course one must remember that apparently here aesthethics are viewed with an objective existence, in a Platonian sense. Or maybe not, because there is talk of the neuronal bases of aesthetic experience. I just do not know. Maybe philosphers will like the book, or at any rate understand it better than I did. But it does not add anything of value (in my opinion) to consciousness studies.

Did the 1970s truly exist? Jack Boulware takes a lurid romp through this playful age, looking back at a time when nudity in films was new, swapping and swinging were sweeping suburbia, and everyone at least pretended to be a player. Filled with photographs and memories of the brief glimmer of naughtiness that followed the sexual revolution and preceded the AIDS epidemic, Sex, American Style is endlessly amusing in showing how freedom of expression allowed people to be silly.
Customer Reviews:
A joyous, visual feast!.......2001-12-21
Alas, I was only ten years old when the 70's came to an end, too young to have experienced any of the grown-up delights celebrated in this wonderful book. But as a record of those times, I've never seen a more thorough and all-encompassing tribute than Sex, American Style, and have never read anything that's ever made me want to go back in time so bad. A few minor errors here and there, but nothing that distracts from the overall giddiness you feel looking back on the highlights of this delightfully decadent era. Plaid leisure suits aside, it's a shame those days are long gone; but since they are, let this book be considered a definitive reminder.
Sexy and F-U-N!.......2000-05-17
Has Jack Boulware been reading my mind? I'd like to think so. Funny, sexy, and just plain good horse sense. I purchased two copies, one to read and one safely sealed in plastic. The seventies have come and gone, but Mr. Boulware has given us a gift, nay, a treasure-tool to keep them just arms reach away from a trip down memory lane. Ah, to sleep purchance to dream. Peace.
No wonder the babes shunned me..........2000-02-18
I came of age (no pun intended) during the Sexed-up Seventies but unfortunately didn't partake of any even lukewarm love action for reasons too numerous and too pathetic to recount without using all of this website's available memory. Boulware's book certainly captures the era's mood, aspects of which I experienced only peripherally at the time. However, the book contains the slipshod proofreading that has marred other recent Feral House publications. Misspellings, typos, factual errors, and layout gaffes interfered with my enjoyment of Boulware's heterohorniness study. I apologize if the above complaint seems picayune, but I've always abhorred mistake-laden communication, whether written or oral, for reasons too numerous, etc.
So good you'll need a cigarette & shower when you're done!.......1999-06-12
This book should make all happy hetero's stand up and give a collective cheer! This book is jammed packed with everything and more one would ever want to know about the greatest decade for sex in the history of mankind-- the 1970's! Rarely has a book so thoroughly covered the era's hedonistic sexuality with such gusto. Little care is taken to not offend the late 90's PC crowd and that in itself puts the book head and shoulders above similar fare. If you lived it, want to re-live it, or want to experience sexuality in all its 70's glory, read this book!
informative but cynical.......1999-01-11
This is a pretty thorough and informative look at the sexual habits of America from the 70's to the present. Most of the reading is interesting and fun, and the photographs of old magazine ads are great. After a while, however, the author's cynical, condescending tone started to grate on me. For instance, regarding hot tubs: 'soon California was deafened by the sounds of old growth redwoods falling to keep up with the demand. And of course, hot tub owners soon realized you had to occasionally clean out the filters, whch would become clogged with pubic hair and other human mange'. A little of this goes a long way, but it seems like Boulware ends every example in the book with a similar disclaimer. I found it read best in small doses.
