Book Description
Whenever John, Paul, or George went on a trip, they would send Ringo a postcard. Now, for the first time, Ringo Starr is opening his private archive to share this delightful and very intimate correspondence. Whether it's John advising Ringo to record a "great & simple" song like Blondie's Heart of Glass, Paul and Jane Asher dropping a note from Rishikesh to report on their meditation lessons with the Maharishi, or George writing from the Great Barrier Reef to confirm plans for Christmas dinner, each postcard is a warm and personal snapshot of life in (and after) The Beatles. The 51 postcards -- many of which are covered in whimsical drawings -- are colorfully reproduced, both front and back. Ringo's droll commentary fills in the blanks, though he does confess that at times he had to consult the Internet for details! Often funny, occasionally bittersweet, and always revealing, Postcards from the Boys is a must for Beatles lovers.

Postcards from the Boys.......2007-05-09
Wonderful book! Every Beatles fan should own this one. It's a gem.
Beatles.......2007-01-10
If you loved the Beatles and still do you will enjoy this book by Ringo. Easy to read and have in a your collection of memorabilia.
satisfying insights into informal relationships between the other beatles and ringo .......2006-07-17
This is a valuable piece of Beatle literature that provided me with some really nice new nuggets of information and understanding, and I feel grateful to Ringo for sharing not only the postcards, but his observations on them. Even the choice of pictures on the cards tells you things about the characters of George, John and Paul.
In all, a real contribution for Beatle nuts who hunger for a little more sense of what the guys are/were "really like."
At least the cover looked nice!.......2006-07-10
I wasn't that happy with the book. Seeing the personal post cards the Beatles sent to each other over the years seemed like a good concept. I guess it looked better on paper than reality. For one thing, there aren't many postcards. Two: They are just the average postcards anybody gets when someone travels, except more boring. Nothing more than "having fun, see you soon". That's about the whole lot of them. Each postcard has a one or two line Ringo quip about it. Sometimes they're interesting, mostly not. The only good thing about it is the fact that it was only $10.00 and some or all of the profits go to charity. Even a die hard Beatle fan won't find much to love about this book.

Book Description
Renaissance Revivals examines patterns in the London revivals of two English Renaissance theatre genres over the past four centuries. Griswold's focus on revenge tragedies and city comedies illuminates the ongoing interaction between society and its cultural products. No cultural object is ever created anew, she argues, but is instead constructed from existing cultural genres and conventions, the visions and professional needs of the artist, and the interests of an audience. Thus, every "new play" is in part a renaissance and every "revival" is in part an entirely new cultural object.

Book Description
Marlowe and the Popular Tradition turns away from popular stereotypes to consider Marlowe as a popular dramatist who inherited an audience with certain expectations and shared experiences. This work explores Marlowe's engagement with the traditions of the popular stage in the 1580's and early 1590's. It offers a new approach to his major plays in terms of staging and audience response, as well as providing a new account of the English drama in these important but largely neglected years.

Book Description
Shakespeare in Theory: The Postmodern Academy and the Early Modern Theater offers a provocative, highly original premise: that present-day literary criticism and theory have been shaped by the same institutional forces that shaped the theater of Shakespeare's day. Stephen Bretzius argues that Shakespeare's poetry and drama have been central to the development of postwar literary and cultural criticism, not just because his works validate these various critical approaches, but because the approaches variously replay his works, from the theater of the Renaissance to the contemporary American university. Where early modern theater once usurped the university, the postmodern university now refashions the theater, recasting in a theoretical register the same disappearing subjects, ideological contradictions, and imperialist illusions that it uncovers in Shakespeare.
Individual chapters provide provocative interpretations of various postwar critical schools and Shakespearean dramas, including the New Historicism and Hamlet, feminism and The Taming of the Shrew, pragmatism and Henry V. Other approaches, including psychoanalysis, multiculturalism, feminism, deconstruction, and nuclear criticism are brought to bear on Love's Labor Lost, Julius Caesar, and Othello. A final chapter on Shakespeare and the Beatles provides a lively conclusion to an imaginative and thought-provoking volume.
"A wonderful book, both witty and incisive in its analysis of cold war literary theory. Bretzius proves the astounding thesis that Shakespearean plot provides the archetypes of theoretical desire for the postwar academy. Paul de Man, Jacques Derrida, Stephen Greenblatt, René Girard, Joel Fineman, pragmatists and feminists alike, appear among the cast of characters in the postmodern play-within-a-play called the 'University.' Bretzius's strong readings of Shakespeare and literary theory will instruct Renaissance and theory scholars alike and amuse a wide audience of readers." --Tobin Siebers, University of Michigan
Stephen Bretzius is Lecturer, Chaffey College.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing and insightful........1999-09-22
Bretzius' book is entertaining and insightful on Shakespeare's work and on the dynamics of Shakespearean criticism. The section on the Beatles and Shakespeare rejuvenated my interest in both. The book's overall vision of the contemporary academy as state-driven theater seems timely and (not politically) correct. I give it a fab four stars and would throw in another for more on the Beatles and the Bard. Highly recommended. --M. Oliver, Orlando.
A journal entry for other specialists; terms undefined.......1999-02-03
This book nearly incomprehensible. The author fails to define terms. The insider chatty style makes it appear he is writing journal entries for other specialists.
The index includes only names of persons, fails to list subjects. Some of the index enties (see, e.g., Booth, Stephen) miscite pages.
I have purchased many university press texts. This is the first disappointment I've experienced.
Incidentally, Amazon's "review" was from the books own jacket.

Book Description
Transversal Enterprises in the Drama of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries further develops the pioneering critical theory, methodology and aesthetics of "transversal poetics" as it progresses beyond both traditional parameters for analysis of early modern English literature and culture and recent trends in literary, theater, and performance studies to offer new readings of plays by Shakespeare, Peele, Jonson, Marlowe, Middleton, Dekker, Rowley, Webster, and Greene. To elucidate their theoretical and historical claims about hermeneutics, phenomenology, theology, consciousness, subjectivity, social identity, theatre and performance, Reynolds and his collaborators move "investigative-expansively" across a broad range of typically separated fields within and outside of the humanities while giving critical attention to topics that are often marginalized within the fields.

Synopsis.......2007-07-09
The ultimate games anthology: every game by the legendary Bobby Fischer up to and including his historic East v West victory against Boris Spassky in Reykjavik 1972. There is also a complete record of all Fischer's tournament and match performances. Many of the games are furnished with deep explanatory notes. This is a book which made publishing history! With contributions by Leonard Barden, Arthur Bisguier, Les Blackstock, Harry Golombek and Paul Keres.
Kevin O'Connell was a former FIDE - World Chess Federation - zone President who was an expert in rules, ratings and archives. He was instrumental in collecting all traceable games by Bobby Fischer up to his conquest of the World Title in 1972. Bob Wade, twice British champion and for decades chief junior coach of the British Chess Federation, was one of the driving forces behind the explosion of chess in England which led to three team silver medals in the chess Olympiads of 1984, 1986 and 1988 and to a British player, Nigel Short, challenging for the world title in 1993.
Wade won the International Master title in his own right, and would doubtless have obtained a Grandmaster title under modern title stipulations.
