5 out of 5 stars Player Piano: Servicing & Rebuilding.......2007-09-26

This is the #1 book to own if you care about understanding how your player piano works and if you want to know how to service it. It is a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Classic and Informative.......2007-05-14

This is an essential reference of player piano servicing. Very technical at points, nonetheless, it offers valuable tips for the novice do-it-yourselfer as well as for the professional restorer seeking advice. Hundreds of modern and period photos from rare service manuals enhance this book. The writing style is very clear and easy to follow.

The only negative, for me, is that it has not been updated since the 1980's. The advent of computerized solenoid player systems, and their potential for being installed on antique players, is barely covered. I would have also covered roll scanning and restoration more thoroughly.

Even if you never open your player, this book provides valuable insight into the inner workings of this most fascinating mechanical technology and helps you to appreciate the art and craft of piano rebuilding.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-11

This book is great for helping with your own piano. Our player is so old that people don't have any idea or parts to fix it. This book gives us some ideas on how to do it ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars Very Complete.......2005-10-09

I'm very happy with this book. It's all expected and more.

It covers everything from basic cleaning and minor repairs to an absolute complete rebuild of ever component imaginable for spinets, uprights, and grand pianos. The author explains precisely how each part of a piano action works and how to properly regulate them. Moreover it also has two chapters on tuning; the first covers the theory of tuning while the second covers the actual tuning process along with exercises that teach each step of the process. It's well worth its price.

5 out of 5 stars Like they used to write them!.......2004-02-19

.
In a world of dumbed-down "hot to do it" books that simply tell you to hire an expert, this book is a breath of fresh air. This is the highly technical stuff that people like Audels wrote in the 1930's before America turned stupid.

Even if you're all thumbs, this will tell you what to look out for when hiring someone. If you have the skill, this will tell you the right way to do the job, just as it was done 80 years ago.

A fine resource written by a real gentlemen who is a purist in the field. If you own any instrument that plays itself, this book is a MUST!

Rookie author Douglas Century delivers a gritty account of street life in urban America. Street Kingdom started out in 1992 as an odd-couple friendship between Century, a Jewish-Canadian Princeton alum, and Big K, a black New Yorker trying to overcome his criminal past and become a rap star. Their five-year relationship--full of culture clashes at turns funny, depressing, and harrowing--allows Century to examine prison life, the sociology of gangs, and the meaning of success in the 1990s. Big K is an irresistible character study: a 270-pound, larger-than-life, one-man melting pot with roots in Jamaica and Panama. His raps blend Caribbean slang, Spanish influences, and the sensibilities (and insensibilities) of urban America. The book's heavy use of profanity may be authentic, but it's also numbing, and Century's decision to use aliases diminishes his otherwise fine journalism. Yet there is much to recommend: the narrative is strong, and Century (who has written for Forward and the New York Times) occasionally recalls the powerful work of Alex Kotlowitz and Ron Suskind. Readers interested in the human side of urban pathology will want to discover this promising new talent. --John J. Miller

      Book Description

When Douglas Century, a white, affluent Princeton graduate, met a streetwise rapper whod once led an 80 member Brooklyn crack gang, he didnt run away. Instead, he got in deep. Century spent the next five years with 30 men raised on violence and taught to impose their will on others, but who are nevertheless desperate to find a way out. Unsentimental, yet completely involving, Street Kingdom paints an unforgettable portrait of life on the street and the vibrant characters who represent both its most vicious criminals and most heartbreaking victims.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book........2006-09-28

If you have any interest in Hip Hop then this is an essential read for you. I do not agree with reviewers who found it condescending or parasitical. The author is a Jewish guy from Canada but that does not exclude him from writing such a book; he never hides who he is, he was the one who spent five years researching and writing it, and got it published, so more power to him. If you read it it appears that he did not decide to write such a book and then set out to use people to do so, rather that the book wrote itself through him having had interesting experiences through his involvement in Hip Hop, that he rightly put down on paper to share with others. It is a true life gripping account of the runnings of a Brooklyn street crew called The Franklin Avenue Posse, loosley associated with rap group Black Moon. It is full of great anecdotes and is well written. It will be of interest to readers of such magazines as Felon, Feds and Don Diva. It ranks up with William Shaw's "Westsiders", a similar excellent book about real life musicians on the fringes of the LA Hip Hop scene.

2 out of 5 stars Condescending and disappointing.......2006-05-05

The previous reviewer who said this book is condescending hits it right on the head. Century thinks that by hanging around these guys, and having a black girlfriend, he is now one of them. He even comments on how when he is out with the crew, people would get out of his way, like he was now suddenly a tough guy. His girlfriend said it best (I don't have the exact quote but can remember it pretty good) "You can go to all the reggae parties and hip-hop clubs you want, you'll still be a white Jewish guy from Canada!"

3 out of 5 stars my pet monster.......2005-10-24

this book came across as very condescending of the main character by the author. century came across to me as a parasitical tick waiting for his mealticket to die or go to jail, in order to profit off him. other than that it was easy reading and i'll read his other books.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-02-23

I ran across this book at the local library. Very interesting read. I wish he'd write a follow up to let us know what happened to all of these people. Life on the streets that isn't a reality to most of us and a scary reality to those who it is real to. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Restoring Faith in American Culture.......2006-11-24

With all of the negativity engendered of late throughout the world about the image of America and Americans, this book (a catalogue from the Brooklyn Museum) is as refreshing as a full-scale Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Based on the exhibition AMERICAN VIEW: MASTERPIECES FROM THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM, this beautifully designed and composed book traces American art from 1824 to 2005, the bulk of the contents of the exhibition and catalogue are from the nineteenth century. Written with great clarity by Teresa A Carbone (she even offers a concise chronology for the span of time the exhibition covers), the works of John Singleton Copley, Charles Wilson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, Asher B. Durand, Abbot Handerson Thayer, George Inness, Raphaelle Peale, Edward Hicks, John Singer Sargent and George Bellows are just a few of the artists whose background with illustrations are offered.

Carbone wisely allows the bulk of this catalogue to let the images speak for themselves and the book is primarily composed of full-page reproductions with complementing commentary opposite the image. Strolling through this book is nostalgic, enriching, and rewarding. The publication of this tome could not have come at a better time when our psyches need a bit of positive input! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 06

        Book Description

Brooklyn is booming, and it is now home to some of the world's most radical design talent. Brooklyn: New Style provides an insider's look at these cutting-edge designers-in graphics, fashion, furniture, architecture, and other fields-who came to the area in search of space, artistic freedom, places to exhibit their work, and fellow artists with whom to collaborate. Priced out of Manhattan by high rents and exorbitant living costs, these young innovators settled in unexpected, out-of-the way neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Dumbo, Fort Greene, and Bushwick, moving Brooklyn to creative center stage in the process. This is the second in a series published by Booth-Clibborn Editions on cities or boroughs where young designers live and work, the first being Berliner Style, edited by Caroline Kurz.

Filled with more than 350 full-color illustrations of off-the-wall projects by Fischer Spooner, Graphic Havoc, Made in USA, Milkcrate, Project Dragon, and 30 other designers, the book captures the energy and talent of these Brooklyn scene-makers. Interviews with the designers and informative captions add another dimension, exploring the social and economic context for this creative explosion.

Vincent Schiavelli's enchanting, sometimes deeply moving memoir with recipes, Bruculinu, America, is a warmly recalled distortion of Brooklyn, one of New York City's boroughs, as it really was. As Schiavelli says, "The stories may not always contain the strict facts, but they certainly tell the truth." Don't be surprised if his beautiful reminiscence of the miracle (which took place before he was born!) that saved his uncle Salvatore Calogero from dying of pneumonia brings a tear to your eye.

Schiavelli, a successful actor, writes scenes so vividly that you participate as he visits a strega, or witch, who exorcised him of a medical problem when he was nine years old. (After seeing a doctor, Schiavelli's mother figured that in case the condition was caused by malocchio, the evil eye, it would be wise to cover all bases.)

Schiavelli's recollections often involve his grandfather, Papa Andrea, a Sicilian master chef. The 70 or so recipes in this enchanting book come from him. The Baked Mashed Potatoes made with peas and grated cheese and fennel-flavored Pasta with Chickpeas are delicious everyday dishes. Baked Macaroni, rich with mushrooms, ground meat, and a touch of cinnamon, is for Sundays. Cucciaddatu are the buttery, log-shaped Christmas cookies filled with nuts and raisins that each Sicilian cook makes in his or her own way. Here, cocoa powder, honey, and cognac add nuances to the nubbly filling. The only frustrations with Bruculinu, America are that its compact size makes it hard to keep one's spot while cooking from it, and that the recipes are woven through the text in no logical order; to return to something in particular, it's necessary to consult a list at the back of the book. --Dana Jacobi

            Book Description

"In the early 1950s, Bruculinu, as the Sicilian immigrants called their Brooklyn neighborhood, was a remarkable place. If the weather was fair, the streets would be teeming with life. Women would be haggling with pushcart vendors in Sicilian and broken English over pieces of fruits and vegetables. Other vendors in horse-drawn wagons would be chanting their wares amid the song of the ragman's bell and the iceman's bellow. Growing up in this place was like having one foot in mid-twentieth-century United States and the other in mid-eighteenth-century Sicily." So begins Vincent Schiavelli's captivating story of coming of age in the Italian section of Brooklyn. In a series of witty vignettes, Schiavelli describes the social customs and secret recipes he learned from his grandfather, a Sicilian master chef, as well as the tenements, gangs, dances, holiday celebrations, and funerals that defined the culture of the neighborhood.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me of my childhood........2005-02-09

I saw this book and needed to read it. After all, I am also Sicilian and born and raised in Brooklyn (though a good many years after Mr. Schiavelli.) His memories brought back a great deal of my own; often ones I had forgotten. I thank him for this. From the street vendors with their horses to the people sharing stories on their stoops to the men's only clubs and the strega exorcising the evil eye - It is all as I remember it, too. If anyone says that this book isn't true to Brooklynites and to Italians, they must not be either.
Enjoy it, it is true treasure!

I originally bought this book because I have always been interested in ethnic neighborhoods. Having lived in Italy for the last ten years I was more skeptical about the recipes. Having said that, while I was reading the book it was clear that Schiavelli knew what he was talking about. Myself and my wife (who is Italian) have been consistently ecstatic about the results of the recipes.

            5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2000-09-27

I bought this book when it first came out, and it was loaded with nostalgia for me and my family, as well as recipes that were enticing (although they can get a bit complex.) A must read for any Italian-American with roots in Brooklyn or without, and anyone who loves a good story

            1 out of 5 stars Sad Sack.......2000-08-09

This book is about as sophisticated and representative of Italian culture as a Big Mac. I would say to Mr. Schiavelli, stick to acting, but the acting is just another version of predictable caricature, just like his books. Honestly, this has nothing to do with the real Italian experience, New York or otherwise.

Wish I could give this book half a star, since the paper it's printed on is nice.

David Goldberg's Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization and Machine Learning is by far the bestselling introduction to genetic algorithms. Goldberg is one of the preeminent researchers in the field--he has published over 100 research articles on genetic algorithms and is a student of John Holland, the father of genetic algorithms--and his deep understanding of the material shines through. The book contains a complete listing of a simple genetic algorithm in Pascal, which C programmers can easily understand. The book covers all of the important topics in the field, including crossover, mutation, classifier systems, and fitness scaling, giving a novice with a computer science background enough information to implement a genetic algorithm and describe genetic algorithms to a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to your journey in Genetic Algorithms........2007-03-09

This is a great book to begin your journey on Genetic Algorithms (GA). The author is a pioneering authority on the subject and has explained the basics of a GA in a very gentle and easy to understand manner. The book has a great variety of specific but diverse examples, which may not be useful at first glance, but gives an insight to where all the technique has been applied!

However, some aspects of the book perhaps need an edition, like the more recent advances in GA operators, specifics of chromosomal representation schemes, non-linear optimization functions, etc. I have read several, well written books on the subject, but this one has a very distinct and sometimes interesting style of writing! The best would be to quickly read this one to get a fairly good understanding of the basics and then take up a recent book that addresses other aspects like Mitchell's book, for example.

Having said that, I think the book is a great and inspiring start to using genetic algorithms.

Excellent book for Graduate students and instructors. Highly recommend!

4 out of 5 stars Not the only paradigm for evolutionary computation.......2005-07-19

This book gives a good introduction to genetic algorithms for a general undergraduate audience. However, it is important to note that it does not cover Evolutionary Strategies, an approach to evolutionary computing that I have found quite useful since it is specifically designed for Euclidean space optimization problems where many if not most interesting optimization problems are formulated in (take for example the problem of determining the weights of a neural network that minimizes the network's overall classification error). Nor does it cover evolutionary programming (not to be confused with genetic programming). So after reading this book, I recommend (for the mathematically adventurous) Thomas Back's "Evolutionary Algorithms in Theory and Practice: Evolution Strategies, Evolutionary Programming, Genetic Algorithms"
              ISBN: 0195099710

Happy reading and enjoy the fascinating world of evolutionary computation!

2 out of 5 stars Read a review article instead!.......2004-11-06

I agree with another reviewer who said the book was unnecessarily long. Genetic Algorithms are a great programming tool, and there are some tips and tricks that can help your programs converge faster and more accurately, but this book had a lot of redundant information.

If you are interested in using GA for solution-finding, I doubt you'll find much useful in this book beyond the first chapter or so. Many of the examples later in the book were so specific that I couldn't see how they could be usefully generalized. Really optimizing a GA approach for a specific problem domain takes a fair amount of tuning, and this book won't help much with that.

I think time spent surfing siteseer or other publication sites would be better spent than reading this book.

              3 out of 5 stars Needs updating.......2004-09-03

OK, I agree with the previous reviewers: it's the classical textbook for GAs. But it definitely needs updating, as it's a 15-year old book and much has been done in the area. Niching methods, for example, are just outlined. I'd recommend Melanie Mitchell's book instead of this one.
