...whether to buy "How to Play Piano Despite Years of Lessons: What Music Is and How to Make It at Home" or "Play Piano in a Flash! Play Your Favorite Songs Like a Pro--Whether You've Had Lessons or Not!" by Scott Houston, buy BOTH--- and do read Scott Houston's book FIRST. He explains the whole premise of playing off chords so much more clearly and simply. After reading Scott's book, you can delightfully play all sorts of piano music you may have around your house effortlessly after a few tries. To give you an example, I used to practice fairly simple folktunes for about a week before (somewhat joltingly) being able to play up to tempo at an even pace. Now, knowing what I know from Scott's book, I can play any such song in about 15 minutes. Really! And I can play faster and more eloquently than I ever could before. Now, I have confidence that I could accompany any singer (including myself)-- a trick I used to think only "good pianists" could do (with much practice). In short, it motivates you to play music almost immediately in a fun and joyous manner.

Now for "How to Play Piano Despite Years of Lessons: What Music Is and How to Make It at Home". It's A LOT more philosophical, and a lot more wordy. It explains everything in much greater detail, and is very fond of the basic Oom-pah-pah sort of playing. The "standard" technique call for playing the melody an octave higher, the root note in octaves on the lowest possible section of the piano (for the Oom) and the chord (reconfigured so as never to reach higher than middle E nor lower than middle C) for the Pah-Pah. This takes quite a bit of PRACTICE. I certainly do not master this in 15 minutes! However, using this technique, I sound like one of those pianist that play at cash bars in restaurants that used to send my mother in the other direction because the "noise" gave her a "headache". It may work exceptionally well for some pieces, and it is certainly not the ONLY device taught in this book. It *is* a good book, with lots and lots of ideas of how to vary the bass notes and such to get a "full" sound from your piano. But you might get a headache or two... and might get discouraged and give up playing piano after all. (DON'T!) It is less motivating, and much more practice than Scott's book. I just can't decide whether I even like the result of the techniques shown. But music theory is explained in a somewhat harmless manner....

Now, I again suggest you buy BOTH books so that you can read them both, try them both, and make your own decisions. However, if you're relatively new to this topic, I suggest that you at least buy Scott's book first. Yes, you'll probably finish it in one sitting and it will seem so OBVIOUS after you read it that you'll wonder whether you ought to have spent the money for the book at all. Yes! Now, sit down and play the piano using these technique to see for yourself!

(To give you some point of reference, my level of playing beforehand using the classical method was Book Four of John Thompson series.... about intermediate I'd say.)

Great instruction. I've played sax for years and never touched the piano until now. From moderately easy to moderately difficult. Good learning system.

5 out of 5 stars Play Piano in a Flash!.......2007-06-28

If I could give this 10 stars I would !!!!

Our son started this program the day it arrived and he has not stopped since. In no time at all he was playing his favorite songs on the piano and has even arranged 2 of his own songs!

He had not had any type of lessons prior to this, just the desire to learn to play the piano. (I do have 3 aunties who are all self taught-so he may come by this naturally)

Anyway, if you are wanting to play the piano and do not have the time or the money for expensive lessons BUY this book! You will not be sorry, it is worth it's weight in gold as far as I am concerned. (atleast "this is one woman's opinion")

In less than 2 years he now plays and sings solos in church!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2007-06-09

I really liked this book. Specially because it clarified for me somet hing I had thought: Classical piano and party piano are a world apart so the ways to learn to play the two can not be the same. Most people want to play piano for parties, have fun, etc. But then they get into learning classical piano that is not it! This book shows how to learn the right way. I do not mark it as 5 star as I do think it is a bit glib on "how easy it is to play piano" and gives you the idea that there is nothing to it, when the truth is that is easy but requires hard work and practice if you want to become good at it. Everything else is great

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-04-30

This well-written little book is just what the trepidatious beginner needs.

Even a rank beginner would probably do fine with this. Having read Houston's book, I'm now even angrier at my old piano teacher than I used to be (yes, you, Mrs. Ó Murchú!). You mean it was that simple all along?

Houston, using layman's terms, makes it plain that there's no mystery to the piano. Chords with the left, melody with the right, and away you go.

He does glide over the fact that you actually DO have to either i) learn the melody by heart on the keyboard or ii) learn how to sight-read quickly, but there's no avoiding that really.

A good book, easy to read, and will definitely get you playing simple tunes (that sound good!) within days or weeks.

Like many, I was introduced to Houston's book and technique through Public Television, and despair for the United States should PBS go under.

Book Description

Lots of piano books offer either in-depth analysis or quick gimmicks that don't really teach music theory. But The Only Basic Piano Instruction Book You'll Ever Need is different. For students who want to learn the basics and dive right into playing, this book skips all the unnecessary trivia on the history of pianos and avoids lengthy digressions on classical and contemporary musicians. Instead, it focuses specifically on piano instruction and includes:
  • The basics of musical terms, definitions, note-reading structure, and time and key signatures
  • The foundations for chords and more complicated note constructs
  • Exercises and sample pieces of music that range from playing simple notes to combining harmony and melody
Perfect even for those starting from scratch, The Only Basic Piano Book You'll Ever Need makes learning to play a cinch.

This book was not a good choice to learn how to play the piano. It's good reading material...but not good to sit at the piano and try to play

    5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2007-01-20

I have dabbled in piano here and there and took a beginning class in college. I wanted to continue now that I am older, but didn't want to go through everything all over again. I was very pleased with this book. It did have all the basics, but it was quick enough that you weren't dwelling on them. It gave a great section on the different keys, which is what I am spending my time on now. I thought it was very clear, very straightforward and I enjoyed the exercises in them. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants a summary of basic piano theory or who is committed to studying themselves.

2 out of 5 stars It is good, but not for me.......2006-12-31

I am new to music and thought this might be "the only basic piano instruction I'll ever need". Maybe I am not musically talented enough, I feel that the book gone far too fast for a beginner - I even have hard time playing the first simple tune. Nevertheless, I must say that the content of the book is really robust and complete, it just that it doesn't suit me. I am better with "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course" series, and it is a good idea to check that series before you decide

Narratives on famous guitarists and the extra details on guitar history are fine, but that's not what readers need or want when they are eager to master their new guitar. The Only Basic Guitar Instruction Book You'll Ever Need jumps straight into teaching beginners note reading, hand positions, and other essentials, including how to:
    • Hold their guitar properly and pick notes with their right hand
    • Progress beyond the basics to integrate playing with both hands
    • Shift positions, play harmony, and understand chord structures
Although learning the guitar can seem intimidating, this easy-to-use, step-by-step guide is simple enough even for novices, who can start picking simple tunes and learn to play chords in no time.

      2 out of 5 stars Major & Minor Confusion.......2007-07-17

I bought this book because I knew nothing about the guitar and needed the basics. The first chapter is fine, but the authors leave big gaps as they go along in teaching you the songs. For example, they teach you a couple of chords and then give you songs in tablature, yet they only offer a small paragraph in the beginning of the book about how to read tablature. I had to turn away from this book to go on with my learning. I don't recommend it. And, by the way, I found that photos of people playing chords doesn't help. Sound files and charts are much better!

2 out of 5 stars Too basic.... better off with a teacher........2006-12-27

This one is just TOO basic - the level it aims at could be better addressed with one or two lessons - and, I believe, better. I didn't return it, though. I'll gift it to someone who wants to learn the basics - on their own!

This is the most helpful book I've ever read. It deals with everything a musician needs to know. It helped me learn how to memorize music more thoroughly, how to deal with stage fright, and how to protect my body from injury. I have given copies of it to all of my friends. Thanks Julie!

I found this book to be a terrific resource for musicians interested in maintaining a healthy body, avoiding injury or coping with an existing problem. Very accessible and user friendly with lots of great usable suggestions and exercises.

2 out of 5 stars Good overview, new age slant, not much detail........1999-05-14

The book is quite good. It gives a good overview of the different possible injuries and techniques for preventing them. It does has a very `new age, holistic ' slan, and sometimes seems to discourage traditional (scientific) approaches. It has been written with the lay person in mind, and doesn't go into too much depth in the medical discussions.

Although I enjoyed the book, I can't help feeling that at by the end of the book I hadn't really learnt anything new.

      4 out of 5 stars Great tips!!!.......2002-01-26

This book is great for motivation for the students.... I really liked how it gave ideas that can be put into kid language, which helped my teaching.

      4 out of 5 stars A Dirty Word?.......2000-11-27

Is "practicing" a dirty word? One camp would have you avoid the "P" word because of its negative connotations. However in his book, Practicing for Young Musicians, Dr. Snitkin states, "You practice to improve technical skills and musicianship. Practicing is playing with a purpose."

This book is addressed to young musicians. It is written on an upper-elementary level with examples and logic that children can relate to. Specific suggestions are given to help the child use his practice time wisely and to increase his musicianship. The student realizes that it is up to him to get the most from his practice time; he is responsible for his own progress.

In reading this book, I kept thinking that this philosophy of being responsible for one's own progress applies in all areas, especially education. The author concluded along the same line when he wrote, "What you've learned isn't limited to music. You've learned to use your time wisely... Most of all, as your own teacher, you've learned to take the responsibility for your own learning and development. In short, you've gained the satisfaction and confidence that come from a job well done." Dr. Snitkin has done his job well in motivating and educating the student to become a better musician. --Penny Gardner, author of Nine-Note Recorder Method

In order to operate modern aircraft in the manner that the designers and manufacturers intend, pilots must understand what each handle or knob controls and must know what to expect from each system when it is employed. The understanding that pilots gain from this manual will help them enjoy their flying more and make them safer, more efficient aviators.

There are very little, if any, few diagrams and the explanations are given to you as though you already have a background with electricity and mechanical items. The sections you perceive to be full of information are probably only 3 pages in length. The diagrams are there to show you what the instruments looks like, but no indications on the diagram of how it would work. Not a book I would recommend to people who want to be in-depth about their systems and planes.

              Book Description

Law and Popular Culture contains a collection of essays which explore the ways in which law interacts with and is represented in popular culture. In common with earlier volumes in the Current Legal Issues series, it seeks both a theoretical and methodological focus. This volume covers a broad range of issues. It is divided into nine parts which cover introductory themes; law as represented in the cinema and television; law as represented in novels; law and music; popular representations of crime and punishment; law, sexuality and popular culture; human rights and popular culture; the cultural phenomena of the mall and the franchise; and lawyering in popular culture.

In her introduction to Respect for Acting, actress and teacher Uta Hagen talks about a time when she herself had no respect for the art of acting. "I used to accept opinions such as: 'You're just born to be an actor'; 'Actors don't really know what they're doing on stage'; 'Acting is just instinct--it can't be taught.'" But this attitude of "you got it or you don't" is fundamentally one that denigrates the craft, as she points out. Great actors do not perform effortlessly, or merely through learning the appropriate tricks and cheats to manipulate an audience. Great acting is about the difficult fusion of intellect and action--about sincerely and truthfully connecting to the moment, your fellow actors, and the audience--and Hagen's thoughtful and profound book contains a series of observations and exercises to help an actor do just that. Her prose style is admirably clear and filled with examples from her own lengthy career both as a performer and in the classroom. While her exercises in sense memory and basic objects skirt close to the sort of self-absorption that followers of "the Method" are routinely accused of, they are presented clearly and with a focus on practical results. And in such places as her chapter "Practical Problems," which includes discussions of stage nerves and how to stay fresh in a long run, her straightforward advice is invaluable. --John Longenbaugh

              Book Description

"This fascinating and detailed book about acting is Miss Hagen's credo, the accumulated wisdom of her years spent in intimate communion with her art. It is at once the voicing of her exacting standards for herself and those she teaches, and an explanation of the means to the end. For those unable to avail themselves of her personal tutelage, her book is the best substitute." —Publishers Weekly "Uta Hagen's Respect for Acting is not only pitched on a high artistic level but it is full of homely, practical information by a superb craftswoman. crafts-woman. An illuminating discussion of the standards and techniques of enlightened stage acting." —Brooks Atkinson "Hagen adds to the large corpus of titles on acting with vivid dicta drawn from experience, skill, and a sense of personal and professional worth. Her principal asset in this treatment is her truly significant imagination. Her `object exercises' display a wealth of detail with which to stimulate the student preparing a scene for presentation." —Library Journal "Respect for Acting is a simple, lucid and sympathetic statement of actors' problems in the theatre and basic tenets for their training wrought from the personal experience of a fine actress and teacher of acting." —Harold Clurman "Uta Hagen's Respect for Acting…is a relatively small book. But within it Miss Hagen tells the young actor about as much as can be conveyed in print of his craft." —Los Angeles Times "Uta Hagen is our greatest living actor; she is, moreover, interested and mystified by the presence of talent and its workings; her third gift is a passion to communicate the mysteries of the craft to which she has given her life. There are almost no American actors uninfluenced by her." —Fritz Weaver "This is a textbook for aspiring actors, but working thespians can profit much by it. Anyone with just a casual interest in the theater should also enjoy its behind-the-scenes flavor. Respect for Acting is certainly a special book, perhaps for a limited readership, but of its "How-To" kind I'd give it four curtain calls, and two hollers of "Author, Author —King Features Syndicate

5 out of 5 stars indispensible, actors bible..........2007-03-06

this is the first book I ever read on acting just as I was about to embark on my first acting lesson, oh, so many years ago. any beginner, pro or dabbler would enhance themselves by reading this..Respect For Acting is the title, respect is the key, to respect your art, your discipline, your craft..you won't find everything you need in here, no book can do that for you that comes from experience but this is the finest book on acting you might ever read, right up there with Stanislavsky's books and a few others...this opened up the world of acting for me and showed what was expected of me and it's lessons still ring true after over 20 years of acting..

2 out of 5 stars Uta Hagen is a better actress than a writer; however..........2007-01-24

...fortunately for anyone who might want the benefit of some of the late Ms. Hagen's acting advice, her writing improved enormously and her second book 'A Challenge For The Actor' (published in 1991) shows her capacity to grow as a scribe as well as a thespian. I would recommend that an aspiring acting student, especially one who is early in his or her career purchase 'A Challenge For The Actor' instead of 'Respect For Acting' as is 'A Challenge For The Actor' far less muddled and obtuse than 'Respect For Acting'

              4 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2006-03-18

Found this book to be very well written, easy to understand, and very helpful in giving me perspective on this wonderful profession.

              4 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2005-10-08

Actors may have changed over time--but the art of acting hasn't. Hagan captures the real work of acting, and the joy. Her ideas are valuable for the actor--and for a member of the audience hoping to gain a better appreciation of the craft.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Those Just Browsing.......2004-06-26

This is a deep, detailed work about the craft of acting. It is definately not for those just dabbling, as it will seem boring at best. But for those truly devoted to learning the craft, this is indespensible.

                        1 out of 5 stars A Crappy Textbook.......2007-09-21

My MBA professor said this was an excellent book, but it was HORRIBLE. Well, at the least the first four chapters were extremely, extremely bad. I could barely finish them--if the professor hadn't been excellent, and gone "outside the book" most of the time, it would have been the worst class I've every taken. After the first four chapters, the book became tolerable, and even somewhat enjoyable (for the technically oriented), but nothing makes up for the first four chapters. What the other negative reviews say is very true.

Expensive and full of fluff. The authors simply love citing their own work. They do so at LEAST twice per chapter. All the cases in the book were written by the authors and the cases themselves are riddled with meaningless buzzwords and are just downright lame (e.g. "a lights-out data center"). Small wonder why the non-English speaking reviewer had problems. Poor guy.

It's obvious that the only opinions the authors value is their own. Beware of any class that requires this textbook because it means the professor has no idea what they are talking about. Just because you teach at Harvard does not necessarily mean you are smart or intelligent.

This book only gets 2 stars from me because 3 or so chapters are actaully worthy of reading. The remainder compells the reader to gouge out their own eyeballs to avoid reading another sentence of the poorly written chapters. You'd think with having 3 authors they could do better than this but alas...no. Most likely you don't have a choice of whether or not to read this book however I am a better man for not having to read this book again. I'll be getting my MBA in 8 days and look forward to NOT reading books like this for the rest of my natural life. Best of luck, you'll need it.
