Book Description
Charles Rosen is one of the world's most talented pianists -- and one of music's most astute commentators. Known as a performer of Bach, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Elliott Carter, he has also written highly acclaimed criticism for sophisticated students and professionals.
In Piano Notes, he writes for a broader audience about an old friend -- the piano itself. Drawing upon a lifetime of wisdom and the accumulated lore of many great performers of the past, Rosen shows why the instrument demands such a stark combination of mental and physical prowess. Readers will gather many little-known insights -- from how pianists vary their posture, to how splicings and microphone placements can ruin recordings, to how the history of composition was dominated by the piano for two centuries. Stories of many great musicians abound. Rosen reveals Nadia Boulanger's favorite way to avoid commenting on the performances of her friends ("You know what I think," spoken with utmost earnestness), why Glenn Gould's recordings suffer from "double-strike" touches, and how even Vladimir Horowitz became enamored of splicing multiple performances into a single recording. Rosen's explanation of the piano's physical pleasures, demands, and discontents will delight and instruct anyone who has ever sat at a keyboard, as well as everyone who loves to listen to the instrument.
In the end, he strikes a contemplative note. Western music was built around the piano from the classical era until recently, and for a good part of that time the instrument was an essential acquisition for every middle-class household. Music making was part of the fabric of social life. Yet those days have ended. Fewer people learn the instrument today. The rise of recorded music has homogenized performance styles and greatly reduced the frequency of public concerts. Music will undoubtedly survive, but will the supremely physical experience of playing the piano ever be the same?

A DELIGHT!.......2007-05-20
Enjoyable and wonderful. Well written, to the point...many anecdotes, but never mean...informative.
A great buy. Makes great present to anyone who is even vaguely interested in piano literature or music in general.
Do you play piano? Buy this book! .......2007-05-02
It's getting so that if Charles Rosen announced a forthcoming book on the collective memories of his summer vacations during his youth kind of thing, I would buy it! Bottom line, and obviously what I'm saying here is that I like the way he writes 'all' of his books, what he has to say and how he says it! A style that both holds and informs if you will. So too, he's "been the road" so the contents of these books draw on the cumulative wealth of his experiences whether it's a discussion of Beethoven's sonatas, the classical era itself and its stand-outs or this present book on the world of the pianist.
Regardless of one's level of experience on the piano, this book is an excellent read from a man who knows what he is talking about. It is NOT a book zeroing in on posture or breathing or "don't bang the keys" recitations or 'lectures' but rather a nitty-gritty practical tome that touches on various areas and what life with the keys is all about. The ups and the downs and all in between.
BTW, if books like these appeal to you written by folks who have "been there, done that" albeit well 'verifiably' so as is the case with Mr. Rosen, and as they equally appeal to me when I can locate such informative tomes, and as a classical oriented player making no excuses for literally loving the classical war-horse pieces, check out "Piano Pieces" by Russell Sherman [New England Conservatory]. Another great read!

Confessions of a pianist.......2006-02-24
As a pianist I stand in awe of Charles Rosen's phenomenal analysis and exposure of the life, status, mind, intellect and passion of one of our most celebrated pianists. If there were ever any doubt about why one plays the piano, here is the answer. This is another MUST HAVE for any honest and serious pianist, either amateur or professional.
Very Enjoyable.......2005-12-03
I didn't know Charles Rosen from a hole in the ground before I picked this up; I'm just a piano enthusiast. His personality comes through in his writing as he reflects on past concerts and recordings and travels and the likes. Not a memoir, but I suppose something pretty close to it. He essentially goes on about the different facets of being a pianist and if you eat breathe and sleep piano, you're sure to enjoy this. His writing style is polished and rather dignified, without being pedantic or scholarly. Heck I wanna go out and buy all this guy's books and records now. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it took me some getting used to at the first chapter, but once I adjusted to the fact that he's world class material and I'm just a schmuck doing scales, it was all smooth sailing from there.
Must have.......2004-10-19
Undoubtedly it's a bible for pianists, as well as a must have for all classical music fans, even whom can not read staves well.

Book Description
A fascinating look into the often controversial development of nudism as it challenged Canadian legal and social norms.
Customer Reviews:
Now, That's Bold, Eh?.......2007-03-23
Au Naturel provides a look at the naturist movement in Canada. From the viewpoint of an American, I found the book fascinating. Dr. James Woycke spares no detail in his unblinking look at Canadian nudism/naturism. He covers nudism (then - now the term "naturism" has been adopted) from its humble beginnings in Canada, province by province, following its growth up to the present. Not only is the writing meticulous in its detail, expected from someone with Ph.D. after his name, it's also quite readable.
The growth of nudism/naturism in Canada wasn't an easy one, to be sure. Similar to the trials and tribulations of American nudists, Canadians faced their share of legal and societal hassles. Dr. Woycke also notes the connection with America that Canadian parks often adopted and the movement to separate from that association.
At times, Canadian nudists/naturists themselves were part of the problem. Some of the incidents Dr. Woycke recounts in Au Naturel read like soap opera material! However, naturism eventually became established, paid its dues, and has become part of the fabric of Canadian society. In some ways, Canadians are more open about their naturism. The Four Seasons resort in Toronto has a sign on the highway that stats, "FOUR SEASONS NUDIST RESORT" in letters 61 centimetres high!
It's interesting to follow nudism/naturism's development in a country with roughly the same culture as America (except, perhaps, in Quebec), but with one-tenth the population.
I even give major points to the cover photo, for it shows a nude man (Dr. Woycke, I suspect) standing, with his back to the camera, surveying icebergs floating past his rocky vantagepoint. Now, that's bold - eh?
a fine overview of the history of Canadian nudism.......2003-06-03
Woycke's book is the only developed discussion of the history of Canadian nudism available in English. He provides a detailed account of the development of nudist clubs and clothing-optional beaches across Canada. Not a naturist himself, he has no particular agenda, other than to present a scholarly and readable history of non-sexualized social nudity in Canada. The footnotes took up nearly half of the original manuscript, so the publisher decided to place them online free of charge, rather than to include them with the text. "Au Naturel: The History of Nudism in Canada" is on a par with Cec Cinder's "The Nudist Idea" from Ultraviolet Press. Together, they give an accurate and informative portrayal of the quirkly world of nudism in North America.

I love this book.......2005-06-26
Dancey's encyclopedia is the bible of ball juggling in my account. He has gathered amazingly many tricks, and does a good job explaining them too, often using helpful drawings. The fact that the book is all about ball juggling gives it a depth in ball-tricks that other books, written more generally about juggling, often lack. The structure of the book, giving the tricks in alphabetical order, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. It also encourages going back and forth in the book, which I find is a great way to constantly find new tricks to learn. Very inspirational.
Must have!.......2005-02-04
I love this book.
Easy to read and understand. Also, it is extremely funny.
Book Description
A book that trains the reader in the art of relaxed concentration--the secret of high performance in business and life. Using juggling to convey its vital lessons, this empowering approach to self-development is based on current brain and learning research and balances humor and playfulness with serious purpose.

Learning to Learn.......2007-04-12
I was amazed that I could do 3 ball juggling just from reading this book...of course, it took me some time and effort. But I did not expect that a written text book could teach and coach the development of motor skills.
I was also pleasantly surprised at the emphasis on relaxation techniques...which were very useful, and it felt awesome to be able to develope some techniques by reading a written text book.
I always believed that motor skills can be taught more effectively using a video or with a personal coach. So I was a little skeptical about being able to learn juggling from a book, but I really wanted to see if I could actually learn juggling on my own.
I have absolutely great respect for the author...for his technique of learning to learn.
I even tried to teach my staff juggling using the same premise and philosophy as this book. It was great to see them realize that they can in fact learn anything...and we juggling A4 sheets (crumpled up into paper balls)!
An enjoyable book on juggling with some life lessons thrown in.......2006-12-07
I loved the book... actually, I LOVED learning how to juggle. My friend taught me, using the concepts in this book, and with a set of balls from a pack called 'More Balls Than Most', I think from Gelb.
It was a fun process, and great to do with a friend. Constant failure, and the as he said, I learned in my sleep, and the next day I could do it. I guess there are lots of lessons that can be applied to the process as well, like learning from failure, relaxed learning, trial and error, using humour, power of play, wonder etc. although I tend to agree, I'd prefer to take these lessons separately as there are many lessons you could relate to the process of juggling and I think the authors just combined areas they were familiar with as lessons to learn. That said, it's an enjoyable book, and I loved the process of learning juggling and it teaches several tricks that you can do alone or with friends.
I highly recommend purchasing this book, learning to juggle (persevere, if you have to) and then sharing your knowledge with a good friend... or just use your newfound knowledge to impress a girl!
Great book for All Ages........2005-06-23
It's great to find a book that guides us to achieving difficult skills. Gelb/Buzan shows how important making mistakes is to creating success. The books isn't a complete book on juggling, but I don't see any need for more pages than is written.
I haven't mastered 3 ball Juggling, but I am comfortable with it. I started 2 in 1 hand which is the basis of 4 ball juggling.
It's really demanding on your throwing technique and less on your sense of sight. Mastering 4 balls is a totally different dimension because it pushes you to your ambidexterity limit. Just don't give up and be aware of your technique.
I still can't juggle much.......2000-07-19
I can juggle 3 balls but I struggle with 4. Maybe I didn't read the book properly or something.
The ultimate success book.......2000-01-31
If you want to achieve your full potential in anything you are ever to do, whoever you are, look no further. This book helps with just that. Written in a playful tone, and with practical examples from the game of juggling, you will find all the confidence, courage and mental skills to do anything you aspire. As the book also teaches juggling, it's style will feel a bit unfamiliar to most readers, but considering how it improved my life I MUST give it a 5 star. Check out books about accellerated learning by the same authors as well.
Book Description
A Goju Ryu Guidebook: The Kogen Kan Manual for Karate gives the reader a tool to navigate the history, exercises, equipment, techniques, kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karatedo. The purpose of this guidebook is to serve as a training aid in furthering the development of karate students and instructors from the Kogen Kan specifically and all karate students generally; however, if it helps only one person, then I will consider it a success.
Please keep in mind that much of this information is in notation form and may only make sense with proper instruction. This guidebook is only a tool to help in the retention of instruction and is not a substitute for it. Also, please keep in mind, that although others have assisted with this guidebook, all errors are my own. This guidebook is formatted in such a way as to be the beginnings of a filing and retrieval system. As each student collects more information, they can organize it by adding it to the "notes" area of the respective sections. It is hoped that all students will research, collect and share material about karate. It is this type of systematic approach that brings science to the art.
It is also written so that a lesson plan can be developed quickly by choosing one or more activities from several sections. If more details are needed while teaching, they can quickly referenced in the rest of the manual. Each chapter is given a table of contents to further hasten referencing. It has a spiral coil binding so it will lay flat for easy viewing during training. Large font also helps in referencing the information from a distance.
Much of this guidebook is written in Japanese. This is done for two reasons: first, it is important to learn Japanese, as it will help standardize everyone's martial arts training; and secondly, this will help keep this information in the purview of the serious. It is a barrier, which will hopefully weed out some who may not use the martial arts for purposes which they were intended, namely the protection of self and others.
Thank you for reading this guidebook.

Just what the doctor ordered!.......2001-04-09
I got the bug to learn how to wire walk. Okay, so I'm not going to do it from very high, but I've been using a Rolla-bolla board to improve my balance and this is a next step. This book covers all kinds of circus acts and gives you a step by step program toward learning how to do them. You still have to develop the physical skills, but this does a great job of getting you there without personal training. I love it!
great resource for eyecatching stunts.......1999-03-17
this book is geared for circus stunts, mostly acrobatics, and none of it is directed towards vaulters who do gymnastics on moving horses. howvever, if this book is carefully read, one can find all sorts of tips on the simplest things, such as handstands, to more intricate lifts. our vaulting club has found it to be a very good resource.
Excellent source of hard to find knowledge.......1998-02-20
This book covers a wide variety of techniques and is very logically arranged. The sections on advanced techniques all have very good safety tips. The section on how to construct your own eqiupment was especially good.

Tells what you need to know to become an entertainer........1999-01-26
This well-written, thoroughly researched book tells what you need to learn, know and do in order to become a professional clown, juggler, magician, comedian, actor or musician. The author bases her writing on interviews with professionals in many aspects of each of these fields.
The book starts with a list of characteristics that most entertainers either have or should have. Then, in the chapters that follow, the various aspects of each of these art forms is explained, including the things each of them must know, what a typical day/show is like, where to learn the trade, and the organizations that help promote the artists or regulate them. There are also interviews with several artists in each of these fields.
Most of the sections also include a range of fees that artists in these fields can expect to make.
This is a realistic view of "the biz." It contains the collective wisdom and unvarnished truths of many real performers.
As a performing artist, I recommend it highly.

Plain cover hides a good book.......1999-10-21
This was the book that started it all for me. An unassuming cover and line drawings or terse jugglers hides an excellent text. I taught myself completely from scratch using this book. With its help I learnt many 3 ball tricks and worked my way up to 5 balls. I also enjoyed the author's philosophy on juggling.

Ahmed Abushaban.......2007-08-30
This is a great book. This book covers 100% of the materials on the PMP Exam. Some of the questions on the PMP Exam comes from materials outside if the PMBOK. This book covers EVERYTHING on the PMP Exam. The questions at the end of the chapters are challenging and very well written. Knowing everthing in this book Plus reviewing the Input, methodologies, and output in the PMBOK will give you an excellent chance of Passing the PMP Exam. With the help of this book, I passed the PMP exam. This Book can help you too. I would like to thank the author and the Publishing company for a GREAT book.
PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition .......2007-07-26
This book provides the reader with adequate information about Project Management and it focuses mainly on PMP certification exam. The flow of the chapters makes easy for the reader to build the necessary knowledge in project management in general and in PMP certification in specific. Also the supplementary quiz at the end of each chapter ensures that the reader has grasped and understood the most important ideas in each chapter; while the final exam, which is provided at the end of book, allows the reader to get a feeling of the PMP exam.
Great Study Guide for PMP Exam.......2007-04-13
I used this book and Paul Sanghera's Study Guide exclusively for studying for the PMP exam and passed on the first try. This book covers the nine knowledge areas with enough depth that you actually learn something rather than just memorize lists. You must to understand both the knowledge areas and process groups fully in order to pass the exam. Read this book first as it is easier to read than Sanghera's Study Guide. Then read Paul Sanghera's Study Guide to understand the ITTOs of the process groups as these are very important on the exam. Stay away from Rita's books unless you want to be convinced you will fail!
This is THE book to study for prepping to take your PMP.......2007-01-18
For all of you reading the PMBOK and having a hard time relating concept to real life, start using Joe's book. His study guide provides real life examples that help solidify the PMBOK concepts in your mind. And, he has great prep tests at the end of each chapter as well as additional questions available via CDROM. The best way to prep is to study, and practice, practice, practice. Joe's materials provides the best of both worlds!
This is 'THE' Roadmap to your PMP Certification.......2007-01-18
Prior to my privilege of attending Mr. Phillips' Bootcamp class, I read the PMBOK on my own; too long, too hard, too BORING.
During his class however, we utilized this book, his book. It was an invaluable Roadmap right through the PMBOK. He breaks down that PMBOK into corresponding, comprehensible chapters. EVERYTHING is explained in simplistic terminology.
He also gets you into the test-taking 'mind set' by providing hundreds of questions (25 per chapter), & their answers, with explainations.
Bottom line, if you want 'PMP' AFTER your name, this book comes BEFORE the test. You will be totally prepared, and there will be no surprises.
