Customer Reviews:
Great and accurate........2007-03-11
I received these cds well on time, and upon discovering they were the wrong cd set the return also took place quickly.
The Standard.......2000-08-17
If you're a music student at almost any major school (I just finished my undergraduate at Indiana University, for example) you'll most likely need to take a course that uses these CD's as part of its history survey. For that purpose, this set is an excellent collection. These, with their companion Norton Anthology of Western Music, and in conjunction with Grout/Palisca's History of Western Music, make for a thorough survey of the roots and history of Western music. Both the History and the Anthology use these CD's, and make constant references to them. (At least, up until 1750, after which you'll need the second volume)
Having said that, however, i'm afraid that these CD's are limited to their intended purpose. Obviously, there would be absolutely no way to have a comprehensive collection of music and text be affordable to an average college student. As it is, the Grout, Norton, and CD's total about $200 total. However, for that cost they provide an extremely good survey of Western music. A student can follow historical developments through the music, and learn an enormous amount from these CD's. They provide a fairly good cross-section of different styles of major composers, and even a few examples of lesser known composers. One is far less likely to criticize the music of the twentieth century, for example, if one finds that Gesualdo (of the late 16th century) was writing music that was MUCH stranger than anything before the turn of the twentieth century.
For someone outside of the music school (who will most likely be required to buy these anyway), these are also an excellent (and comparatively affordable) way to survey the mainstream and less-mainstream trends in Western music. The recordings are all relatively high-quality, often using historical instruments and interpretations (something important to a student of musical history) and providing a good introduction to classical music.
For that reason, then, i recommend these to the casual listener as a good introduction to Western music. If you seek a "greatest hits" album, these are not that; go buy those Time-Life things they advertise on television. This is rather a serious collection of music from as many different styles as allowable while still maintaining some depth. The only thing that keeps the fifth star empty is the lack (by necessity, though i must admit) of a more wide-ranging selection of music. Despite that, they are still an excellent buy. The casual listener of classical music should find these to be a valuable introduction to the well known, and also the more obscure realms of early music.

Customer Reviews:
Modern British culture(s) clearly explained.......2001-06-16
This is a welcome addition to the existing literature on the complexity of cultural life in Britain today. I liked the book for several reasons. First, it does what it says, and provides a well-written and comprehensible introduction to widely studied subject areas. Second, it's clear, well-written and objective. Third, it puts the material in a clear historical context. The students like it too, especially the chapters on literature, film and popular music.
In my opinion, there's no other text that is so well-researched and which manages to generate interest in its subject matter; the author breathes life into his subjects and convinces the reader to go out and learn more about them. This is an interesting, useful and practical addition to the library of any student/teacher of modern British culture and the arts.
Britwatch well-done!.......2001-02-08
Not many books succeed in covering the cultural panorama of modern Britain in such a concise, precise and well-informed way. I found the information clear and detailed, but always interesting and accessible. Not many other books in the field manage to guide the reader in such a way, and either end up being dense and unreadable or else simple and patronising. Christopher's book does neither and should be a useful text for anyone with an interest in modern British cultural life, particularly students of British studies, or like me, of language and literature.
I'd like to have seen more pictures, and more activities, perhaps based around authentic texts. Apart from that, it's a useful addition to any student's reading list, and I can warmly recommend it.

ASIN: 094648791X |
Book Description
The first-ever Scots language course.
Suitable as an introductory course or for those interested in re-acquainting themselves with the language of childhood and grandparents.
There are various existing reference books about Scots, such as dictionaries and grammar books, but this is the first-ever language course. The book assumes no prior knowledge on the reader's part. Starting from the most basic vocabulary and constructions, the reader is guided step-by-step through Scots vocabulary and the subtleties of grammar and idiom that distinguish Scots from English. An accompanying audio recording conveys the authentic pronunciation, especially important to readers from outside Scotland.
The course is based on General Scots with a slight emphasis on the North-East and contains an introduction, twenty-five graded lessons, an English-to-Scots vocabulary list, and appendices with verb tables and similar material. Each lesson itself contains dialogues, vocabulary, grammatical explanations, exercises, and - most importantly - a section giving background information about life in Scotland, for the reader to understand the material in its cultural context.
This is a fun and interesting insight into Scottish culture. By the end of the course participants will be able to read books and poems in Scots, take part in conversation, and enjoy interacting with Scots speakers.
Customer Reviews:
Nae baud if yer wantin tae lairn Scots.......2006-11-10
This is a good introductory text on Scots. This book does a great job of describing proper usage and grammar, as well as providing common language patterns as contrasted with English. The background information about Scotland is also very interesting. The back of the book includes a handy English to Scots vocabulary section, but it does not also provide a Scots to English section. In addition, the book does not contain an index. This makes it less useful as a reference book, but it's still a good way to acquaint yourself with Scots.
Yes, Scots is a real language!.......2006-02-28
For those who wondered, Scots is a real language, not just an 'accent' used in films, with a few odd-sounding words thrown in! This book makes it all clear in concise, easy to use and practical lessons that are also interesting from a cultural point of view. Aside from strengthening your ties to your heritage, you can get more pleasure out of reading Stevenson or Diana Gabaldon - in fact you will be even better informed than most authors! Probably the best (maybe the only) book on this language out there! The book includes an offer for CDs as well.
easy lessons for Scots language.......2005-04-14
This is an easy to use book for people wanting to learn Scots. It has 25 graded lessons, English-to Scots vocabulary list, verb tables, dialogues for you to practice, grammatical explanations and exercises. It also has a wee bit about background on life in Scotland.
This is very good introductory course for those wishes to learn the language you heard growing up or for Americans wanting to get more in touch their their heritage. There are some good dictionaries on Scots, but this is a long-awaited, first course for teaching yourself. A winning point for American usage - it assumes the user has no prior knowledge of Scots, so it works very well for very basic beginners of Scots.
It's set up with an accompanying audio CD (Sold separately; ISBN: 1842820265) which I highly recommend getting to use with the book. You really need to hear pronunciations. So, if you like Burns but have trouble reading him, you will be reading Robbie like a pro buy the end of the lessons.
The lessons are fun and easy to follow, so this is highly recommended for those interested in learn Scots language.

Compulsory for any branch of Cultural Studies.......2000-11-03
I mark this book as a required text to my students in my Cultural Studies Course.
Despite, or rather because of it's professed limitation to British Cultural Studies, Turner demonstrates a lot of sensitivity to what is and what is not British Cultural Studies, making any reader immediately aware of how other Cultural Studies traditions may differ. His extremely cogent and clear account takes the reader easily into the heart of Cultural Studies- what quarrels does British Cultural Studies have with other disciplines and what is so unique about its orientation as a discipline?
First to pick!.......2000-06-24
Turner's
is a well-summarized, well-written introduction to the tradition of so-called critical cultural studies. This can draw a lot of attention from undergrads to phd-to-bes, from all across the social science and hmanities fields--such as mass media, communication, literature, aesthetics, philosophy, criticism, popular culture. If you believe that there's something missing in the US mainstream social science and humanities, this is the book you must start with.

Since its first publication in 1976,
Modern Britain has been widely used as a comprehensive account of the key features of British cultural and political life today. John Irwin examines a wide range of topics which are essential to understanding British culture and the British way of life, including the system of government, the structure of its educational system, social services, family life, and the mass media.
This third edition has been fully revised to incorporate the many significant developments in British life that have occurred since its first publication, such as material on the decision of the Queen to pay tax and the General Synod's vote to allow the ordination of female clergy in the Church of England. Wide-ranging in its coverage and thoroughly up to date, this book is the ideal guide to how modern British institutions developed and how they work today.

Book Description
Questioning the myth that Britain consists of a homogeneous people, this collection of essays explores a wide range of critical debates on cultural identity in Britain. With analysis of ways of teaching, as well as reading British culture, this lively and provocative collection is an ideal introduction to this contentious area.
Essays cover key issues, such as terminological distinctions between British Studies and British Cultural Studies, the complexities of national cultures and identity in contemporary Britain, models for studying the history and development of conceptions of "Britishness," as well as the study of contemporary Britain in other countries.
The contributors to this volume have all been instrumental in establishing British Studies internationally and share the idea of culture as a plurality of discourses, rather than a fixed, unitary concept. Contributors include: Anthony Easthope, Alan Durant, Christopher Brumfit, Michael Byram, David Punter, Robert Crawford, Katie Gramich, Sabina Sharkey, David Dabydeen and John Drakakis.

Reality Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX: Strategic Solutions for Online Interaction
ASIN: 0596005040 |
Book Description
With the advent of Flash Communication Server MX (FCS), Macromedia believes that it's on the edge of a breakthrough in how people think about the Internet. FCS has been designed to provide web developers with the means to add polished interactive audio and video features to their sites, the sort of features that users have come to expect. Naturally, the process of efficiently integrating rich media into applications, web sites, and web content is a complex one, to say the least. That's where Programming Flash Communication Server factors in. As the foremost reference on FCS, it helps readers understand how FCS can facilitate:
- Video on demand
- Live webcasts
- Video chat and messaging
- Shared desktop conferences
- Live auctions
- Interactive whiteboard presentations
- Workflow collaboration
- Multi-user games
Programming Flash Communication Server not only explains how to use the pre-built FCS components to construct a simple application, it also explains the architecture so that developers can program custom components to make even more advanced applications. In addition, the book explains how to truly optimize performance, and talks about considerations for networked applications as well as the media issues pertaining to FCS. Programming Flash Communication Server gives developers a sorely needed leg up on this potentially intimidating technology. It lets users develop cool web applications ranging from direct dating experiences with real-time video, to pre-recorded corporate presentations, to news services with video and audio, and much more. At last, the ability to build web sites with rich interactive features--minus the complex downloads and installation hassles--is a reality. And now, with Programming Flash Communication Server from O'Reilly by your side, you can do more quickly and easily than you ever dreamed possible.
Customer Reviews:
Still good for Flash Media Server 2.......2007-04-11
Although I'm using Flash Media Server 2, this book is still highly relevant as not much has changed. The core objects and language is the same so I would not hesitate to recommend it for anyone looking to use FMS.
Only good resource I've found on this subject.......2006-11-09
This book is all about the design of applications using Macromedia's Flash Communication Server MX. FCS MX enables the building of media-rich web applications by taking care of the basic tasks required in the networking of the applications. Thus, you can focus on the application itself rather than worrying about low-level communication details.
Since this book is concerned with situations where multiple Flash applications will be executing on the same server simultaneously, there is going to be considerable effort involved in coordinating events, which is addressed by this book. You should already have FCS installed and running on your server and you should also have Flash MX available on the client. The following is description of the book by chapter:
Chapter 1, Introducing the Flash Communication Server - Acts as an introduction to FCS and an overview of the whole book.
Chapter 2, Communication Components - How the FlashCom communication components encapsulate commonly needed features such as chat, video recording and playback, bandwidth control, and user configuration. These components implement many basic building blocks for your application.
Chapter 3, Managing Connections - This chapter covers connections in more depth past the SimpleConnect component, including how to write custom code to handle various changes in the connection status as well as different errors.
Chapter 4, Applications, Instances, and Server-Side ActionScript - This chapter describes how to write Server-Side ActionScript and work with the objects that control application instances and the Flash movies that connect to them.
Chapter 5, Managing Streams - Offers a somewhat oversimplified but complete example that shows the basic steps in publishing one live stream and subscribing to a second.
Chapter 6, Camera and Microphone - This chapter explains how to use both the Microphone and Camera classes to record live streams. These classes are at the heart of most communication applications involving multimedia.
Chapter 7, Media Preparation and Delivery - This chapter covers many details for compressing and streaming audio and video.
Chapter 8, Shared Objects - This chapter starts an entirely new subject - shared objects, which provide a mechanism for the transmission of data between client and server.
Chapter 9, Remote Methods - This chapter also shows how to broadcast method calls to every movie and application instance connected to a shared object or stream, or send them to and from individual movies using RMI.
Chapter 10, Server Management API - Discusses the Server Management API and its applications, including monitoring a FlashCom Server, gathering statistics on application instances, and managing the log streams.
Chapter 11, Flash Remoting - Demonstrates how Flash Remoting can be used to add data connectivity to FlashCom applications. Flash Remoting can access web services, server-side scripts, CGI applications, XML files, or the local filesystem with the help of an application server such as ColdFusion.
Chapter 12, ColdFusion MX and FlashCom - Teaches some specifics involved in using Flash Remoting with ColdFusion MX and FlashCom. There are some practical working examples shown that demonstrate how you can leverage the benefits of Flash Remoting in conjunction with FlashCom.
Chapter 13, Building Communication Components - This is the first step in building complete applications, and is demonstrated through an extensive example.
Chapter 14, Understanding the Macromedia Component Framework - How to modify an existing component and how to create a new one. Also discusses server-side framework code and its core features and data structures.
Chapter 15, Application Design Patterns and Best Practices - Describes some of the best practices available to application developers. This chapter provides some useful design options, patterns, and best practices that will help you build better applications.
Chapter 16, Building Scalable Applications - Deals with building multi-instance and multiserver applications that don't bog down as the number of client connections increases.
Chapter 17, Network Performance, Latency, Concurrency - Traditional network design issues affect FCS also.
Chapter 18, Securing Applications - Specifically this chapter examines the three A's of security - Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting.
This is a great reference........2006-03-16
Excellent book, stuffed of examples very well explained, easy to read and to understand, essential for who desires initiate or even though to profound itself studies on FlashCom.
Obligator reference in projects involving FlashCom, either for fast consultations and advanced tasks.
Excellent approach of subjects as Design patterns and security, yonder a perfect demonstration about audio, video and much more.
A necessity for the bookshelf..........2006-03-02
If you're a developer looking into real-time server communication using Adobe Flash, this book is a must-have. It guides you thru various levels of application development in an easy to understand format, and provides well documented pieces of code to assist you in the learning process of putting together your project:
Topics covered include:
- learning about components and how to use them
- establishing and managing client connections
- publishing live and recorded streams
- local communication with clients
- remote communication with outside applications
The book also shows how to build and integrate your own custom components, and how to scale your application using the components that you've created. Other highlights include information on how to use shared objects and server management API, as well as ways to improve both design and performance.
A must-own for FlashCom developers.......2006-01-16
This is a very well-written book written by many famous FlashCom developers. It does not only give a comprehensive guideline on how to develope FlashCom applications, it also introduces best-practices and design patterns for developers. It also has many useful and real-world examples.
However, I believe this books is between beginner and intermediate level. You must know some ActionScript in order to get into what this book is talking about.
I highly recommend this book for FlashCom developers.
