Book Description
This is the story of the depraved, no-future land called the American Midwest in the 1980s, and of a boy who rose from a dismal town (population 2300) to become one of the biggest selling musicians of the 1990s. A kid from a broken home, and a college drop-out, Trent Reznor wrote the material that would become Pretty Hate Machine while a janitor at a studio where he tinkered after-hours. Each of the midnight layers that made the album opener "Head Like a Hole" such a claustrophobic head-trip came from just one guy, on one synth, in one room.
Daphne Carr's book will fill in the background of Trent Reznor's early years in Mercer, Pennsylvania - a miserable backwater offering only television and radio waves as indications that interesting places did exist. Somewhere else. Daphne Carr interviews dozens of hardcore NIN fans, digging up memories of what it was like to encounter this album in 1989, and discussing how Trent Reznor's persona and worldview impacted on the lives of these fans - including herself. This book not only tells the story of the birth of Nine Inch Nails, but also gives voice to a peculiarly American subculture that - especially since the Columbine shootings - has been widely vilified: Mall Goths, of whom Trent Reznor is undoubtedly the patron saint.
Book Description
Sound, throb, and a long low wail of pure, hard pain....Nine Inch Nails. The world's most disturbing rock band is in effect one man singer and songwriter Trent Reznor. Since stealing the show during the original Lollapalooza tour in 1991, NIN has limned the hard edge of the techno revolution. In Reznor's desperate, combative persona and disarrayed melodies the musical community has finally found a band that appalls, confounds, and undeniably attracts. Horrified yet entranced, NIN's fans are like moths drawn toward the disfiguring flame of their music. From a well of previously unpublished research, Huxley has carved out the history of this improbably hero: Reznor's rise as an Appalachian outcast to dyspeptic sex symbol; his connections to Courtney Love; and his relationship with his spasmodically fixated fans. Ricocheting wildly between goth rock and grunge, Nine Inch Nails has emerged. Here, Martin Huxley digs hard and deep to unearth the truth beneath this, the ultimate noise.

Nine Inch Nails.......2006-07-26
This book is a disappointing read for the average NIN fan - pretty much everything of interest in the book I had already read somewhere before (most online as they are from American magazines such as Spin). The author also pads out the book with information on other artists, some of whom have very little connection to either Reznor or NIN. This means the prose is sometimes more in line with that of an essay than an interesting book. I was excited to find and read this book given the lack of books on the subject but, ultimately, I was relieved to finish it.
read to much like a term paper not a story........2006-05-13
There was a lot of information in the book but it was all research from other magazine and newspaper articles. There was no NINE INCH NAILS in there just facts. I didn't find that to entertaining.
Interesting book.......2003-11-10
I've not listened to much NIN before. They / he started getting popular when I was in college but I didn't have any albums until recently - I just bought 'The Downward Spiral.' I'm not a huge fan but I thought this book was interesting just because it tells about how Reznor became successful and how he approaches music, etc. It doesn't bash him or portray him as perfect either, which I like.
I wish it had more about Trent.......2003-06-30
This book was pretty good.Kinda A short read though. Most of the interviews on here were pretty good and there was some information about Trent being that he is A very private person.I guess I was just expecting to learn alot more about him.
One of the best NIN books that I have read.......2003-04-19
When I first got this book, I figured that I would be dissapointed because I have read many pieces on Trent Reznor and all the authors that I have read do not do a good job to represent Trent's musical vision and honesty. After reading this book, I realized that Martin Huxley did quite the contrary of what I expected. Although the book was a little outdated (published in 1997, before "The Fragile" and other NIN halos), it still contained a lot of information on my favorite musical artist and person-Trent Reznor.

Book Description
By popularizing electronic music, Grammy Award winning artist Trent Reznor rewired the mainstream with his act Nine Inch Nails.
Customer Reviews:
Parts of it may bug the hell out of you.......2007-01-03
Nine Inch Nails is Tommy Udo's biography about the band with the same name and its founder Trent Reznor, beginning with the birth of electronic music long before Mr. Reznor came along, his musical trials and errors before the release of Pretty Hate Machine, all the way up to double album The Fragile and DVD And All That Might Have Been which came out a few years ago. Udo himself is a fan, which isn't much of a surprise, I guess. Still, he's not a fanatic, but rather is of the opinion that Reznor and his ideas have had such an important part in the history of music that he deserves to have a book written about him.
And he's right, of course. One may love or hate Reznor's contributions to the world of music, but no one can dispute the fact that he's had an enormous impact and has been, and still is, a huge influence on countless musicians all over the world.
Still, Nine Inch Nails feels more like a summary than a biography.
Reznor isn't the one with the longest career in the music business, but throughout the 232 pages of the book Udo nonetheless fails to get into any kind of depth when it comes to Reznor and his music. In all fairness it should be mentioned that Udo never claims to have written the ultimate biography, which is quite fortunate, because then the end result would have been truly horrible, instead of how it is right now: semi-bad.
A freakishly large part of the text is made up of quotes from different magazines, and more or less every single one of these quotes have one or more errors or typos that not even an apprentice proof-reader should ever have missed. The continuous use of various quotes do result in one getting the feeling that Udo really doesn't have any personal opinions about Reznor and his music and instead simply relies on what other believe. It really does give the appearance of being the easy way out, and the innumerable typos and grammatical errors soon become a massive nuisance.
Udo might be the most passionate fan out there, but passion doesn't always automatically lead to great results.
is a book that many fans might appreciate, but the lack of depth is sure to piss many people off, too. I wasn't looking for anything but an overview, so to me it was OK. But still far from great.
Horrible...just simple horrible........2004-11-12
Do not read this book at all. It is very horrible and within the first couple chapters I felt like burning it. It is very in accurate and is not worth a single dollar.
More about things NIN related, then actually about NIN.......2003-04-02
I bought this book in my continual search for information on my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails. And this book certainly had a lot of information to provide me with. However, the format used almost got to the point of being annoying.
What this book does it introduce a subject (the production of Pretty Hate Machine for example), mention that it heavily used synthesizers, then go into the history of synthesizers. After 2 pages, then it gets back to the topic at hand. And while sometimes I was intrigued by the information provided (say, for FLOOD), most times it was something that either didn't need to be mentioned in a book about Trent Reznor, or could be in a book about the industrial music movement.
I used the same method in my senior composition class to pad papers, but in this case it wasn't warranted.
Come to think of it, the book tries at times to be an all encompassing encyclopedia of industrial music, which isn't why I bought it at all. I suppose I'm more knowledgeable about it because of the information provided, but it wasn't by choice.
The information about NIN is fascinating, and ends with the recording of their live album "And All That Could Have Been." Overall, I liked the book, but could have lived without the extraneous information about everything under the sun.
Good, yet get more information.......2003-03-04
I wouldn't say I am a fanatic Nin fan but a really really big fan. Tommy Udo wrote a great book it gives a lot of good information and goes over the history pretty well. But He made a mistake. There is a part in one of the first chapters where he is explaing the albums. And he said that the Live Album was called And All That Might Have Been. When in fact it is titled And All That Could Have Been. And he takes quotes out of context. Where one time he says that Trent Said. "I see that I am saving Rock n' Roll. billy Corgan failed, now it's all up to me." He said that in this context "people are saying that I see that I am saving Rock n' Roll, Billy Corgan Failed, so it's up to me whenI really don't ever like Rock that much". Great book though, he just needs to leave thigns the way they are.

Maximum Nine Inch Nails.......2001-03-09
This is a good biography. unless you have read the biography by Martin Huxley. i think they stole most of their info from the book and that it could have been better with a few more words from trent. it was not made by trent so it is not as good as it could of been. If you have read the book by huxley you probly won't find much more except after the downward spiral part of the biography.

Customer Reviews:
My actual rating is 2 and 1/2 stars.......2001-07-31
Since I'm no longer a newbie in The Craft I've modified my former opinion of this book somewhat.
I still feel that this book contains a lot of things that have nothing to do with candle magick, as well as having information about Voodoo(I thought the title of this was WICCA Candle Magick!) But her information on candle colors is good and her information on crystals is very interesting, although again I question why she has info on crystals in a book that is supposed to be about candle magick!
I still think that some of the spells are positively revolting! The worst one involves taking a dead toad or frog(I forget which one)and putting the carcass under a dung heap until all the flesh is eaten away by maggotts and then using the bones in a spell!!! (Hmmm...next time I find a dead toad or frog, I think I'll take the body and save some of my dog's dung)! How much dung would I have to collect to make a dung heap and just how much could it stink? I can't imagine the neighbors objecting!
This is the kind of stuff that gives Witches a bad rep!
It's obvious that the author is very knowledgable, but this book should definetely have a different tile!
This is for Intermediate or advanced, not beginner Witches.......2000-09-21
Dunwich has written a good book for candle magick, but her book focuses on very specific things to do and not to do. She also provides some basic info on colors, and what they represent. There's also some nice tid bits of historical information that I enjoyed reading.
However, I don't feel this is a good book for someone just starting out. For me to sit here and type all the reasons I believe it's not for beginners would take to long, so I'll just reemphasize that if you have practiced candle magick already, and are comfortable with it, then this book is for you. I know I'm not providing specifics, but I really don't have the time right now to tell you every single detail..Blessed Be.
Amazing!.......2000-02-22
Wow! I love it! It's very clear, and doesn't just cover candle magick, but crystals, gemstones, gods and goddesses, it's a very informative book for people who are just starting to study the magickal and spiritual arts. The candle spells work and are precise. Amazing!
Good, but with many questionable things...........1999-08-15
This is a very interesting book, don't get me wrong, but it left me wondering so many things. This book is sloppy, and it makes me wonder if Gerina put her whole heart into it or just threw it together? Some paragraphs made me feel like she was in a hurry. I'm not joking, the introduction made me feel like she was anxious to get the book over with, she wrote the paragraphs like she was in a hurry. I wish she would have explained Candle Magick in this book, she dwells on possibly unessessary things and includes too many things that I don't think belong in this book. Her information on making candles isn't that bad, but there are other methods as well, some of which are easier, but she does give several options. Some of her oils are just gross, and I can't see a lot of Wiccans using them. Her information on herbs and healing isn't bad at all, I just wish she would have explained how to use herbs, how to use herbs with candle magick, and examples of rituals and spells. Her info on herbs is good, if you've had experience. Her information on gems and crystal are good too, it just has nothing to do with candle magick itself. Her information on gods and godesses is always good in all her books, but in this book it is too long and drawn out, I wouldn't be suprised if there are 40 pages just about gods and goddesses used in Wicca and the candle colors associated with them. This is good information and it can be used for good reference, I'm just not sure it's necessary and makes me wonder if it was put in there to fill up space. Do you see what I mean? Her Sabbat rituals are not really candle rituals, she has good ideas for rituals, but some of her ideas are complicated, and unusuable for many readers. Plus, many Wiccans do not use ceremonial swords and do not cast magick circles in the way she does. But, as for almost any ritual in my opinion, it can be modified to fit your own needs, it just be nice, if you could follow it word by word. She is knowledgeable about the Sabbats, and her rituals are enlightening and fun to read. Her chapter on Candle Magick itself is strange, and it would be nice if there was some candle spells in it. Most of the spells she presents on a wide variety of topics contains candles, but I only considered ONE SPELL to actually be candle magick, and that was a love spells targeting individuals, something most Wiccans wouldn't do anyways. I'm not saying this is children's literature at all, but the way Gerina Dunwich writes in some places in this book, makes you feel like she is speaking to you either like a child or she doesn't care what you do kind of attitude. Her writing style in some places of this book might make some readers question her intelligence. That is rude, I know, but I am not joking. She does give a lot of spells, like some reviewers have said, some are very interesting, and some cover topics other authors avoid or may know nothing about, but some of her spells are bizarre, makes you wonder where she got them, some of her spells are gross, with disgusting ingredients, and some of her spells are almost impossible to perform for various reasons. She includes a chapter on Voudoun Candle Magick, which would have been nice if it included information about Voudoun Candle Magick, she is knowledgeable about Voodoo, and she does a good job explaining it and explaining Voodoo gods and goddesses and even how to make Voudoun candles, there is just very little information anyone can apply, but she does present Voudoun in an easy to understand, interesting, explainative manner of being. She includes a Voodoo ritual too, which I'm not sure is necessary, what was this book about again. She speaks about breaking Hoodoo (not Voodoo) curses, yet doesn't explain the background behind Hoodoo practice. Finally, as always, I liked her chapter on Candle Omens and Superstitions, and she even includes a listing of Occult and Metaphysical shops most of which I hope at least sell Candles accross the country. This book is good, I recently bought three more books and this one was the best, but this book is sort of thrown together, and makes me wonder more about what Gerina Dunwich was thinking when she wrote this book. For better information on Candle Magick, try Ray Buckland's Practical Candleburning Rituals: Spells and Rituals for every purpose. Bye.
Not a good starter book for beginners.......1998-09-26
This is a better book for an experianced user. For the experianced user it provides a number of good magick spells.

One of the best setting supplements for Dragonlance!.......2000-03-25
This boxed set represents the pinnacle of what the 5th Age should be about, and is a must for every narrator/DM that wants to adventure in the 5th Age. The Citadel of Light (the mystical organization Goldmoon created when she discovered the magic of the Heart in the 5th Age) is detailed in full, with enough adventure hooks and story ideas to keep even the most active campaign busy. More importantly, this supplement is written in an interesting way that allows readers to absorb it quickly without falling asleep from boredom. I highly recommend this product for both SAGA and Dungeons and Dragons.
Note: Many of the characters in CoL are also used in Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's War of Souls trilogy, the first book of which is Dragons of a Fallen Sun.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful guide.......2007-05-23
A very good reference guide for any new/existing cme/cue deployment. Specifically the sample config guides were very useful. Overall this book is well written.
A Complete Reference for Configuring and Managing CME.......2007-04-26
Cisco IP Communications Express: CallManager Express with Cisco Unity Express (ISBN 1-58705-180-X) is an all-in-one resource for configuring, managing, and troubleshooting the Cisco CallManager Express (CME) solution. It is almost 900 pages and is well organized into five parts: overview, feature operation and applications, administration and management, maintenance and troubleshooting, and appendices. If you are involved in configuring or maintaining the Cisco CallManger Express, this book will provide you with all the information you need to get your work done.
Cisco CME is an integrated solution offered by Cisco for meeting the IP telephony needs of small businesses or branch offices. The CME solution, which consists of the call processing feature and the voice mail feature, runs on the Cisco routers ranging from the 1700 series to the 3700 series and beyond. Whereas the CallManager suite offers centralized approach to building out an enterprise wide VoIP network, the CME is meant to serve the needs of smaller businesses or to integrate seamlessly into the larger, enterprise solution.
The book is well written and starts out with a high level architecture of the deployment scenarios for CME. The second part gets into the features and applications side of the solution. This part is where the crux of the book lies. It presents a detailed coverage of the commands used to configure the CallManager solution under various scenarios such as implementing different call features, integrating VoIP with PSTN, and deploying CME as part of a larger CallManager solution. This part presents a thorough coverage of Unity Express (UE), the voicemail module of the CME. The third part relates to the management of CME. Particularly useful in this part is a real-life configuration example as it illustrates and brings together a lot of the material covered in the earlier part of the book. Part four gets into the essential topic of troubleshooting the CME solution. It provides useful tips and solutions for common problems found in deploying the call processing and voice mail aspects of CME. This is definitely a very useful section of the book. The last part, the appendices, has reference materials and scripts used in the book to make daily tasks easier etc.
One of the strong points of the book is a multitude of sample configurations. The authors provide sample configurations throughout the book to help illustrate the concepts being presented. This sample configuration goes a long way if the reader has the task of actually configuring CME. The other strong point of the book is the depth of coverage given to each topic that is discussed. With the exception of a handful of topics (one in particular which I'll mention), the book never glosses over any topic; rather it covers it in detail, ensuring that most aspects of the topic are addressed. The exception to this was the coverage of the D/A module(s) used for attaching analog devices to CME, such as a fax machine. Given that analog fax machines still constitute a critical part of any business, I would expect this topic to be covered in detail. However, I found that no configuration examples were provided on how to configure this in the CME suite.
In summary, this book is a great all-in-one reference for configuring and managing CME. I would highly recommend it to any professional tasked with working on Cisco's CallManager Express.
excellent book.......2007-04-21
overall this book is very good. I like the examples it presents to make thing clear, and also the broadness of topics it covers.
Since Cisco IP Telephony evolves so quickly, I wish Cisco will release newer editions with updated technologies. in particular I was hoping this book should contribute some to SIP and its deployment in UCME environment.
Very good book - not only for CCME and CUE.......2006-02-25
I've used this book as a main reference for my first complete implementation of CCME and CUE. I said "main" reference instead of "only" reference, because there are few small gaps to be filled by Cisco on-line documentation, but the deficiencies are too small to justify anything less than 5 stars. Additionally, there is a lot of general (IP and traditional) telephony information so even a relative beginner, after reading this book, will be able to intelligently interview future users (Chapter 5 is simply brilliant!), design quite complex system with many fancy call features, and even create scripts for quite sophisticated Auto-Attendant options. Certain concepts are not explained in complete detail (for example dial peers or voice ports), but deeply enough for the needs of CCME.
Solid Book. add to your Library.......2005-09-05
A must have book
This book is a great tool for full and complete understanding of Cisco's IP Communication Express. The structure is geared to first provide a foundation with an overview, then moves into design and implementation the book is organized into different parts that provide great coverage of all aspects.
Part I starts with introducing IP Communication. The coverage begins by taking you on a journey into what Cisco IPC is, the benefits of IPC, and the architecture of IPC networks. The one thing you notice is that the authors took great care in organizing the chapters. Each chapter is well written and easy to follow along. This makes the book a great choice as either a first learning book or as a refresher book for experienced professionals looking to augment their knowledge. One of the first chapters shows you the features and functions of the various gateways, WAN interfaces and IP phones available for use in an IPC network. This allows you to pick the best equipment for your particular solution. I believe this is great because it allows you learn some features of the product in order to decide if you would like to research it further; this helps streamline the process of design and political issues. Another section of the Part 1 goes over the architecture of IPC. You will learn the ins and outs of what happens at a low level. You will learn a-lot of core information; get an introduction to equipment and technologies that can be utilized.
Part II of this book is where the fun begins. Chapter 4 goes over the IP phones in more detail. You are taught about features and how to configure the individual phones. The chapter is short and to the point. Chapter 5 is an incredible book where the engineers' ears will perk up. Call Manager Call processing features are presented in this chapter. The topics here include hunt groups, call parking, shared lines, intercom, paging and much more. I really like the configurations and examples in this book. With this chapter you will be able to quickly implement the CM features.
The next chapter deals with Connectivity to the PSTN. The focuses in this chapter are signaling and how to handle the inputted digits. One of the only faults I think with this book is that chapters 5 and 6 should be swapped.
Part III and IV cover Administration, Management, Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Now is really where the techies cheer up. Here is all the goodies on how to setup CME, UE, and what to do if problems arise. The gold mine is located in these 2 parts.
These chapters provide the reader with detail and examples to help reinforce all that is being explained.
I don't want to spoil this book or be long winded so I will say the remaining pages of this book are well worth the read. It covers everything you need in order to obtain a solid understanding of Cisco's IPC. There is no area that isn't covered with attention to detail. The authors provide quality information that is very useful in all areas of understanding and implementation of Cisco IP Express. The reader will come away with exceptional and relevant knowledge to do anything needed with IPC. I got this book to help augment my 4+ years with Cisco Voice products, I feel that it did help cement my knowledge and also taught me quite a few new things.
