Customer Reviews:
Women Composers.......2007-09-10
When I read the table of contents, I was very very happy to see that this book includes women composers. My theory book from last year did not include any women composers and that made me mad, so I was excited to see Hildegard of Bingen and Ruth Crawford Seeger among others included in this book.
Terrific collection of pieces for study.......2005-11-20
Of course, every piece of music can be analyzed and discussed. The problem for the teacher is to find pieces that will yield useful principles for students to learn through their early studies in form, harmony, and voice leading. Ideally, the pieces will be representative of the music of their period and of the principles under discussion. It really does the student no good to study a piece that is unique in the way it handles the principle being studied. On the other hand, the student must be able to discover the form, or harmonic example, or voice leading with the skills they are developing. So, the selection cannot be too sophisticated for its audience nor should the piece yield its treasure too easily. The student should have to work a bit in order to develop their analytic abilities.
This collection of pieces for study has been around for quite awhile with some alterations in its various editions. This is the sixth edition and remains a great collection. The pieces are from all periods from ancient to modern, there are pieces in all genres and ensemble types. Certainly, any teacher will likely supplement what is provided here with their own preferred pieces to illustrate certain points, but there is so much valuable stuff here that it will likely provide source material for several classes over a the years of undergraduate study. Burkhart also provides helpful notes and insightful questions at the head of pieces to help the student in thinking about that piece.
While I want to complement the publisher on the clarity of printing, and the vast majority of it is very good, I do wish that the few places where the bars for the sixteenth, thirty-second, and sixty-fourth notes run together that they were more careful to make them clear as well. Yes, this is not a performing edition and it is still clear what the music is, it is still disconcerting for musicians to try to read such blurry music. Can you imagine an anthology of, say, American poetry, being acceptable if the text were smeared just because it was kind of legible? But this is a smallish (but serious) point.
This anthology would be perfectly useable for someone studying form, harmony, and voice leading on their own, as well.
Fine anthology that has earned its place in the curriculum.
Recommended Anthology.......2005-10-27
I'm a student at the Peabody Conservatory, so I've used music anthologies for a few years now and I've found that Burkhart's Anthology for Musical Analysis (6th edition) is a praiseworthy version. Some comments from a student's point of view: the book is well organized, with relevant examples (including orchestral scores) and informative introductions to each of the five sections as well as to each musical example; the examples are easy to read and to mark up; it is spiral bound and, while easy to page through, is loose and rather heavy, making it a bit cumbersome to carry to class; my biggest complaint is about its exorbitant price-I don't know why these no-frills music books have to be so costly. But if you are looking for a good anthology and are willing to pay, Burkhart's is a terrific choice. Extra benefits include: two appendices, one with Jazz harmony and one with chorale harmonizations; translations of foreign terms; and two good indexes, one general and one of chords, sequences, and modulations.
THE basic music companion.......1999-12-22
Dr. Burkhart has compiled a marvelous compendium of approachable music for analysis -- particularly of "common practice period" examples. In addition, he includes works, in increasing difficulty in that they start to lead away from various conventions of our Western ears' expectations. In sample or example, Burkhart leads us from Baroque tonality to the start of atonality through Wagner's "Tristan und Isole" and beyond. The scores are large enough to include easy reading (much "white" around the notes). The newer paper is more receptive to pencil marking. In addition, the binding has been improved since ? This is a must for the "classical" listener who reads music. It is a great companion for any analysis or form class.

Product Description
This is an anthology of 17 papers, eight presented at the Fifteenth Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture in June 2003 and nine presented at the Sixteenth in June 2004. Selected from over 60 papers delivered at both symposia, the essays represent the finest scholarship from two conferences. The essays are divided into five sections. Gender: Feminism and Masculinity on and off the Diamond examines the relationship between baseball and gender, and includes a discussion of the rituals of brawling and a unique autobiographical account from former major league player Dan Ardell. African Americans and the Game studies Reconstruction-era baseball, the African American presss attitude toward the Negro Leagues, and the declining appeal of baseball for the African American community. Other Minorities: Beyond Baseballs Melting Pot expands on the discussion of baseball and ethnicity. Baseball Media: Literature, Journalism, and Audiovisual Reproduction examines baseball from the perspective of the media and popular arts and considers baseball's cultural stereotypes in film, drama, and literature. The Business of Baseball offers five essays on topics ranging from the foundation of the Yankees dynasty to the impact of market size on competition in the modern major leagues.

Book Description
An important history in the entertainment world.
The Salisbury Post
The most comprehensive episode guide ever seen in any book.
Television Chronicles
Another great work by Robertson
He's still the standard by which TV reference should be judged.
Popocalypse World of Fun
He looked like Steve McGarrett. He dressed like Joe Mannix. But Jim Rockford acted like no detective we'd ever seenand television audiences have loved him for over 30 years.
Fueled by innovative writing, unforgettable characters, and the star power of James Garner,
The Rockford Files (NBC, 1974-1980) is one of the most popular, successful and endearing TV series ever made. Winner of five Emmys, including Best Actor (Garner) and Best Dramatic Series (1978), Rockford came back with a splash in 1994 as a series of movies on CBS. Reruns of the original Files have played continuously throughout the world since 1980, while the CBS movies have been a staple on cable since 2001.
Get the inside scoop on this landmark series in
Thirty Years of The Rockford Files, featuring insight from series star James Garner; commentary from the show's principal writers, producers and actors; interesting factoids about the original NBC series and the CBS reunion movies; original artwork; rare, behind-the-scenes photographs; and much, much more.

Rockford Fan (Melbourne, AUSTRALIA.......2007-05-17
This is a great book. If you are a Rockford Files fan, this book is a must buy. The author (Ed Robertson) has gone to great lengths to even include the phone messages at the begining of each and every episode.
If you're Rockford File fan read it........2007-03-27
This is a good book, but like all genre of show books it's only average as far as interest and enjoyment. I loved the Rockford Files and still watch them when on one of the cable channels. I've seen some of the episodes at least 5-6 times. There are a few bummers among them (mostly the last two years), but 75% of them I enjoyed. After four years or so I think any writing staff is challenged to write fresh & creative material for a show and I don't think Rockford Files was an exception to the rule.
The books tells quite a bit about the actors & actoresses who played in the show. It also talks about the Pontiac Firebird that Jim drove. If your a James Garner/Rockford fan do read the book.
Everything you ever wanted to know..........2007-02-28
Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (2/07)
This edition of "Thirty Years of the Rockford Files" is an update from the original book that came out over ten years ago. I did not read the first release, but I can tell you from this edition that nothing is left out from the series. I was amazed at the thoroughness with which Ed Robertson covered this series and everything surrounding the series. It is a great guide for fans of the Rockford Files and would be a great addition to anyone buying the series on DVD.
The book is broken down by seasons and episodes with additional background information on the series, interviews with the actors, and tidbits of information that is not anywhere on the series. Many of you will remember that each episode begins with a message on Jim Rockford's answering machine like this one "This is Mrs. Owens with the Association for a Better Malibu. Thanks for your contributions. We've made great strides, but it would help, dear, if you could move your trailer!" Remember the famous trailer on the beach where he lived and the Firebird he drove?
I enjoyed the series in the 70's and the later Rockford File movies but had no idea that the character was created by Roy Huggins based on James Garner's enormously successful role as Brett Maverick years earlier. His specialty was "closed cases" and he embarrassed the police quite frequently throughout the series by solving these impossible cases. Rockford didn't care because he had been wrongfully accused of a crime and spent five years in jail before be exonerated. He was this business for the money and was described in the first chapter: "he did like money: he charged $200 a day, plus expenses, so he'd hang in there no matter what if he could smell a fat check down the road. "I won't kill for money, and I won't marry for it," he once said. "Other than that, I'm open to just about anything."
Many familiar faces guest starred on the Rockford Files over the years like Stephanie Powers, Lindsay Wagner, Ned Beatty and Tom Selleck just to name a few. Each chapter is full of facts surrounding guest appearances as well as linking them to James Garner's career. For example, Suzanne Somers guest starred on The Rockford Files in 1974, three years before she made it big on Three's Company with John Ritter. James Garner later joined the cast of 8 Simple Rules following John Ritter's untimely death in 2003.
So if you or someone you know is a Rockford Files fan, "Thirty Years of the Rockford Files" is a must have!
Files on the Files - entertaining and informative .......2006-10-19
In Germany "The Rockford Files" is "Detektiv Rockford", and is still shown now and then on small private channels that (bless 'em) specialize in old American TV series and films. I got hooked on the series years ago by the catchy intro harmonica and swift LA photo montage, the stylish bronze Firebird, and of course the irony and whimsicality of the all-too fallible but ever-persistent Jim Rockford. The book is a supremely helpful companion to the series, with background, commentary and deft summaries of every episode made, including supporting cast. There is a nice chapter on the Firebirds in which our anti-hero tools through the streets and suburbs (and those wonderful hick towns out beyond the 'burbs) of Greater Los Angeles. Bar Columbo, James Garner's Rockford is the most entertaining of the TV detectives, and one of the most memorable (let's not forget somber Jack Webb in "Dragnet"). And this book is about the most entertaining I've yet read on a TV series.
"This is Jim Rockford...".......2006-08-18
With the classic 1974-1980 NBC detective show "The Rockford Files" finally coming out on DVD, the time is right for a comprehensive series guide book such as Ed Robertson's "Thirty Years of The Rockford Files." As portrayed by veteran actor James Garner, hard-bitten (and hard-luck) private detective Jim Rockford virtually defined the genre for many years. The show was incredibly popular at the time, and has played continuously in reruns ever since--hence the "Thirty Years" in the title. Garnering five Emmy Awards, including a Best Actor for Garner and a Best Dramatic Series, "The Rockford Files" was one of the most successful and unforgettable television series ever made.
"Thirty Years of The Rockford Files" is packed with "insider" information about the show. It includes rare behind-the-scenes photographs, interviews with writers, producers, directors and actors, fascinating trivia, the story of "the world's most famous Firebird" and complete episode guides for all six seasons. The description of each episode typically spans a few pages, and includes a cast list, a transcript of the humorous telephone answering machine message that opens each show, a plot summary and a discussion of interesting features of the episode. The plot summaries are very brief, usually just a short paragraph. At first I thought they were too short, but after watching a few episodes and then reading the related summaries, I concluded that they are "just right." Interestingly, most of them don't reveal the resolution of the mystery--you'll have to watch the episode to find out how it ends. Mr. Robertson also briefly summarizes the eight post-series Rockford movies that aired on CBS, and includes a short section on the two "Rockford Files" novels by Edgar-Award-winning mystery writer Stuart Kaminsky that appeared in 1996 and 1998. Finally, he discusses four of the ten unproduced scripts from the sixth season, which ended after only 12 (instead of 22) episodes after James Garner became ill.
If you're buying "The Rockford Files" DVDs as they become available, you'll definitely want to pick up a copy of this book. Of all the television series and movie "companion" books, this is one of the best. Very highly recommended for all Rockford fans.

Great Read.......2005-02-10
This is an excellent book for hotel and travel managers as it contains tons of useful information and practical advice. Wheather you have an inhouse webmaster or are outsourcing the task (like I do), it will help you market better on the internet. I read it along with Heads In Beds-Hospitality and Tourism Marketing, and have improved my marketing activities ever since. Now I'm annoying my colleagues by telling them to read both. But those who did were grateful. A must read.
well worth every cent I paid.......2004-07-11
Our family is opening a modest Inn in Bangkok, Thailand later this year, so I decided to purchase this book after reading all the rave reviews. I started browsing through this book today and boy am I impressed! The title of this book seemed rather generic at first, but it more or less covered everything I wanted to know about how to market for my inn on the WWW.
Topics that were of most interest to me included: increasing hits for your site on popular search engines, tips for creating great websites, how to issue press releases and how to get listed on pertinent directories.
The author obviously put in ALOT of research before putting pen to paper to write this book. The recommended websites alone (at the end of each chapter) are well worth the money spent. My only complaint is that many of the recommended links are outdated or broken - but this is by no means the fault of the author... A must buy!
A Classic for all Travel Related Businesses.......2004-03-31
I am in the process of starting my own specialized tour business and brought this book out of hibernation for review. I had purchased it a couple years ago and it has just been marking time.
The author has done a superb job of guiding someone through the minefield of travel marketing --- and her advice still holds up to date.
I'm sure someone can find fault with not being 'up to date' since 9/11, yet this is flawless strategy that one only needs to update by adding a Google Adwords program, and possibly some eBay listings.
Reminds me of buying a mint 5 year old Porsche, which still offers all the amenities, yet one could upgrade the sound system if you wanted.
If you are going into the travel business, or almost any business for that matter, this is a classic that you can use and adjust accordingly to fit your niche.
Well worth it.
One for the Bookshelf.......2002-02-13
Marketing on the Internet can lead you down a series of complicated and confusing paths. But, if you're in charge of marketing a destination or lodging, gain the upper hand by reading Susan Sweeney's "Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business."
As soon as you begin thumbing through this 562-page resource, you¹ll want to begin highlighting important passages. Whatever you do, resist that temptation. Why? Because if you start highlighting the important stuff, the entire book will be yellow before you know it!
Sweeney discusses basic marketing principles, web site design, the importance of search engine placement, targeting tourism newsgroups and mailing lists, building web site traffic, using e-mail effectively, developing link strategies with complementary businesses, advertising on line, accepting online reservations, maximizing media relations, and determining if webcasting is right for your site.
I love the fact that Sweeney uses real world examples from the travel industry to illustrate her points throughout the book. You¹ll learn how the Expedias of this world made it to the top.
"Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business" is packed with tips that any tourism professional can use to enhance his or her company's presence on the web. Even if you don't have time to read the book thoroughly, it's worth the cover price for the massive Appendix. It¹s got a great section defining web terms, as well as a comprehensive list of Internet marketing resources.
