Hollywood Utopia
Justine Brown Manufacturer: New Star Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0921586906 |
Book Description
We've heard much about Hollywood Babylon - the Tinseltown of surface, cynicism, and corruption. But what about Hollywood Utopia? In her new book, Justine Brown recovers the idealistic origins of the world's movie capital. Many of Hollywood's earliest shapers were utopian thinkers, drawn to the west coast of America by the limitless possibilities it seemed to offer. L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz and producer of some of the earliest films made in Hollywood, was one newcomer who was influenced by Theosophy, the proto-New Age philosophy which designated California as the site of the New World.
Another early arrival on the coast, the director D.W. Griffith believed that silent movies were an "Esperanto of the eye," a Universal Language which had the potential to save mankind. The Russian director Sergei Eisenstein took the Universal Language concept literally, fashioning film into ideograms. Finding a cool reception at the Hollywood studios, he went south of the border on a quest to make a film to trump Hollywood. The writer Upton Sinclair, who put up the money, later ran for Governor of California, promising to convert the state's industries - movieland and all - into co-operatives.
The film colony harboured little bohemian circles. Allaz Nazimova, the avant-garde Russian vamp, came to California in 1917 with her occultist protegé Natacha Rambova (a Mormon princess in disguise), who used Rudolph Valentino to demonstrate her belief that the new medium could turn mere mortals into gods.
Another Pygmalion figure was William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate who built a fairy kingdom at San Simeon for his mistress Marion Davies. Their parties were a mainstay of film colony social life.
By the late 1930s, Hollywood's playful, idealistic side was in eclipse. Aldous Huxley, who was by then working as a Hollywood script writer, depicts his new home as a garish hell - one of the first to describe the new Hollywood that had grown over and obscured the idealistic colony of artists and actors who founded it thirty years earlier.
Justine Brown's rich and exotic prose makes us fell like we're right there. In her homage to a few of the lesser gods, we come to know more about the creative forces of early Hollywood.

Strains of Utopia: Gender, Nostalgia, and Hollywood Film Music (Princeton Paperbacks)
Caryl Flinn Manufacturer: Princeton Univ Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691048010 |
Book Description
When Dmitri Tiomkin thanked Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss, Richard Strauss, and Richard Wagner upon accepting the Academy Award for his score of The High and the Mighty in 1954, he was honoring a romantic style that had characterized Hollywood's golden age of film composition from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. Exploring elements of romanticism in film scores of composers ranging from Erich Korngold to Bernard Herrmann, Caryl Flinn argues that films tended to link music to the sense of an idealized, lost past. Just as the score of Gone with the Wind captured the grandeur of the antebellum South, others prompted flashbacks or suggested moments of emotional intensity and sensuality. Maintaining that many films treated this utopian impulse as a female trait, Flinn investigates the ways Hollywood genre films--particularly film noir and melodrama--sustained the connection between music and nostalgia, utopia, and femininity. The author situates Hollywood film scores within a romantic aesthetic ideology, noting compositional and theoretical affinities between the film composers and Wagner, with emphasis on authorship, creativity, and femininity. Pointing to the lasting impact of romanticism on film music, Flinn draws from poststructuralist, Marxist, feminist, and psychoanalytic criticism to offer fresh insights into the broad theme of music as an excessive utopian condition.Download Description

The best beginners/intermediate book around!!!.......2004-01-16
It gives good introductory information on how to play winning blackjack. It covers basic strategy, money management and other fundamentals in a clear, concise way. He explains the strategy in such a way that it's easy to understand and REMEMBER. And he leaves out a lot of the non-sense and self promotion garbage you get in a lot of other books.
Even though I have a rather large library of blackjack books now, I still find myself throwing this one into my bag to read as a refresher on the plane trip to Vegas.
It's not meant to be the be-all-end-all book on blackjack and it shouldn't be judged as if it were. There will come a point, if you get serious enough about the game, that you'll want a more advanced book. This is the best book I've found however to give you the "blocking and tackling" fundamentals of blackjack.
