              Book Description

We've heard much about Hollywood Babylon - the Tinseltown of surface, cynicism, and corruption. But what about Hollywood Utopia? In her new book, Justine Brown recovers the idealistic origins of the world's movie capital.

Many of Hollywood's earliest shapers were utopian thinkers, drawn to the west coast of America by the limitless possibilities it seemed to offer. L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz and producer of some of the earliest films made in Hollywood, was one newcomer who was influenced by Theosophy, the proto-New Age philosophy which designated California as the site of the New World.

Another early arrival on the coast, the director D.W. Griffith believed that silent movies were an "Esperanto of the eye," a Universal Language which had the potential to save mankind. The Russian director Sergei Eisenstein took the Universal Language concept literally, fashioning film into ideograms. Finding a cool reception at the Hollywood studios, he went south of the border on a quest to make a film to trump Hollywood. The writer Upton Sinclair, who put up the money, later ran for Governor of California, promising to convert the state's industries - movieland and all - into co-operatives.

The film colony harboured little bohemian circles. Allaz Nazimova, the avant-garde Russian vamp, came to California in 1917 with her occultist protegé Natacha Rambova (a Mormon princess in disguise), who used Rudolph Valentino to demonstrate her belief that the new medium could turn mere mortals into gods.

Another Pygmalion figure was William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate who built a fairy kingdom at San Simeon for his mistress Marion Davies. Their parties were a mainstay of film colony social life.

By the late 1930s, Hollywood's playful, idealistic side was in eclipse. Aldous Huxley, who was by then working as a Hollywood script writer, depicts his new home as a garish hell - one of the first to describe the new Hollywood that had grown over and obscured the idealistic colony of artists and actors who founded it thirty years earlier.

Justine Brown's rich and exotic prose makes us fell like we're right there. In her homage to a few of the lesser gods, we come to know more about the creative forces of early Hollywood.

                Book Description

Hollywood Utopia applies a range of interdisciplinary strategies to trace the evolution of ecological representations in Hollywood film from 1950s to the present. Popular science fiction, westerns, nature and road movies are extensively analysed while privileging ecological moments of sublime expression often dramatized in the closing moments of these films.

                  Book Description

When Dmitri Tiomkin thanked Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss, Richard Strauss, and Richard Wagner upon accepting the Academy Award for his score of The High and the Mighty in 1954, he was honoring a romantic style that had characterized Hollywood's golden age of film composition from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. Exploring elements of romanticism in film scores of composers ranging from Erich Korngold to Bernard Herrmann, Caryl Flinn argues that films tended to link music to the sense of an idealized, lost past. Just as the score of Gone with the Wind captured the grandeur of the antebellum South, others prompted flashbacks or suggested moments of emotional intensity and sensuality. Maintaining that many films treated this utopian impulse as a female trait, Flinn investigates the ways Hollywood genre films--particularly film noir and melodrama--sustained the connection between music and nostalgia, utopia, and femininity. The author situates Hollywood film scores within a romantic aesthetic ideology, noting compositional and theoretical affinities between the film composers and Wagner, with emphasis on authorship, creativity, and femininity. Pointing to the lasting impact of romanticism on film music, Flinn draws from poststructuralist, Marxist, feminist, and psychoanalytic criticism to offer fresh insights into the broad theme of music as an excessive utopian condition.

Winning Casino Blackjack for the Non-Counter is a great strategy book for blackjack beginners. It gives comprehensive charts detailing which moves to make, but more importantly, explains the charts in understandable language.

I've tried other blackjack books, but they all just gave charts with no explanations. This one explains each move so you understand exactly why you make it, which makes it easier to remember at the casino!

This is the first blackjack book I ever used and it was a great starting point. Since then I've gone through a few more books and at my times at the casino, I made a killing! I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to start playing this game.

                          1 out of 5 stars A rip-off..........2005-01-09

Nothing more than an advertisement for his expensive mail-order non-counter strategies. The strategy he claims to present in this book is misrepresented as a non-counting strategy, when in fact it is (he basically says estimate the number of high cards remaining by watching which cards have been played, which is the definition of counting). If you want the actual non-counter strategy, you have to shell out $50 for a mail-order packet. Stay away.

                          5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2004-08-19

This book helped me incredibly understand the odds and help beat the casino at their games. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The best beginners/intermediate book around!!!.......2004-01-16

When I made my first trip to Las Vegas over 10 years ago, I was lucky enought to find this book in the bookstore, insightful enough to buy it and terrified enough of losing money to read it and put it into practice. Since that time I've play tens of thousands of hands of blackjack in casinos all over the Western Hemisphere. I've also bought and read lots of other books on Blackjack. This one is without question the best.

It gives good introductory information on how to play winning blackjack. It covers basic strategy, money management and other fundamentals in a clear, concise way. He explains the strategy in such a way that it's easy to understand and REMEMBER. And he leaves out a lot of the non-sense and self promotion garbage you get in a lot of other books.

Even though I have a rather large library of blackjack books now, I still find myself throwing this one into my bag to read as a refresher on the plane trip to Vegas.

It's not meant to be the be-all-end-all book on blackjack and it shouldn't be judged as if it were. There will come a point, if you get serious enough about the game, that you'll want a more advanced book. This is the best book I've found however to give you the "blocking and tackling" fundamentals of blackjack.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to some Vegas Fun.......2005-01-04

I was preparing for a trip to Vegas and wanted to try something else besides blackjack.

This was just the book I needed. Craps is really not that difficult once you know what's going on at the table, and, as this book will tell you, you don't even need to understand all of it. Most bets on the table are sucker's bets. The odds are stacked in the house's favor. Stick to the bets outlined earlier in this book.

The early chapters explain the layout and rules of the table. The author goes on to explain what the odds are versus what the bets pay, which gives you the house advantages.

The system described in this book is more of a money management plan. Bet smart, and know that the house will always have some advantage, even if it's only 0.09%. In the long term you're going to lose. Manage your cash, have a ton of fun at the table cheering and letting the dice fly, while being served free drinks. Maybe you'll walk away with more in chips than you showed up with in cash. I did.

You'll have fun playing craps after reading this book. Just remember to ignore anyone, including the author of this book, who will lead you to believe over the long term you'll emerge a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Book, not for experts........2001-04-21

The text and elaboration on the rules of the game are great for the beginner. The "winner" part, I'm not sure of. I would investigate other books for strategy advice on craps, though I cannot advise which ones.

If you've never played before, this one is good.

3 out of 5 stars Casino Craps Review.......2000-04-25

This book is fine for the beginning dice roller, but not for those who already have some knowledge about craps. The book has a VERY GOOD discussion of the basic rules of the game, odds and the different payouts. I like the chapters on special allowance for both right and wrong betters. I still use the book to refresh my memory sometimes. Other than that, however, the playing systems are nothing great. Pass or Don't Pass with odds. Nothing new here, but a good book for those just starting out in the game of craps.

                                          2 out of 5 stars Jury's still out ... but be warned.......2007-03-07

Errata! Errata! Errata! Some of the most unhelpful errata I've come across. Some of the mistakes are just sloppy, some are sad - how do you mix up whole sections? These were professional printers, right? Where was quality control, editors, proofers? Like a foolish woman marrying a dangerous man, I found all this out AFTER committing to it. No, really.

At first glance I thought this would be an excellent series because everything seemed so concise and well-plotted. That's why I went ahead and bought the PowerPoint 2003 Personal Trainer without working with the Word trainer first. But heavens to murgatroyd!

Sometimes it just leaves you hanging - you'll get a curt "this figure is incorrect" and NOTHING telling you where the correct figure is. For one such piece of errata you are directed to a page within the site where you can print out the correct figure, but that kind of consideration isn't consistent. One piece of errata informs you that the text is cut off ... and doesn't bother to tell you what it was to have said. Sloppy!!

Good thing I backed these books up with the excellent 'Professional Approach' series published by McGraw Hill. I've been able to get Word, PowerPoint, and Excel at good prices through the Amazon marketplace vendors, otherwise these books cost. Sure it takes two hands to lift, but they're thorough and the errata is truly errata, not something the editor should've sent to his staff in a routine memo. The 'Professional Approach' series is not without some fault and I'll comment on them soon, but be very careful with this Personal Trainer series, Word Personal Trainer in particular.

I gave this book two stars because another reviewer likes the programming section. I don't recall errata for this section, so maybe I'm good to go with that. Otherwise, no matter how pretty the pictures, no matter how cool the little interactive thingamajingy - this kind of thing makes me nuts! Its presentation drags it down.

Because I knew I may have a timebomb on my hands with the PowerPoint Trainer I moseyed on over to look for its errata page and it's stated that there is none - yet. Uh oh.

I did not receive a CD with the Word 2003 Personal Trainer Book. One of the main reason I chose this book is it comes with a tutorial CD. If you are thinking you will receive a CD double check.

The Personal Trainer series is golden!! I teach software applications and have found these books to be invaluable. I am not teaching intensive knowledge of the subject, but mainly to people who want to brush up on an application or to those who are not familiar with the programs at all.

The CD topics are comprehensive, interactive, easy to digest, and very informative. I have people who will spend hours on them and come back for more. The CD topics follow the topics in the book. People can use the CDs, the books, or both in conjunction. They are valuable either way.

There are practice files for more in-depth information. These are well presented - very clear and with excellent diagrams.

I have recommended these on a regular basis for other learning centers and to individuals. Even bought a set for myself as, no, I do not know everything!

This review covers the series in general because they are all very well done.

I will admit when I first saw the covers, I thought oh-oh, tacky! But upon opening the books, I found they are great.

4 out of 5 stars Easy learning - declarative approach.......2005-03-31

Microsoft Word has been with us for over 10 years. Naturally, with each revision, more features are added. So where do you start learning? Well, this book breaks down the effort into small lessons. A single lesson does not seem that hard. The lessons are also buttressed by a review and quiz (with answers) at the end of each chapter.

Hopefully, you should not find anything too difficult here. MS Word fundamentally deals with stuff (text and images) that are WYSIWIG. Relatively few abstractions. The lessons have the virtue that you can perform an operation and usually see its effect immediately in front of you.

The most advanced and abstract idea is at the end - writing and running macros. A chance at programming! Any of you programmer types will dig this. Though what you can fully do with macros is only hinted at.
