3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but one major drawback!.......2005-01-03

There's one major drawback: There's no CD available! otherwise an ok supplement.

5 out of 5 stars Great for anybody who already has some music knowledge.......2004-06-17

I wouldn't recommend this book for anybody who is a beginner in music, but I love it! I just started with it and it goes at just the right pace! It's fast enough so that you don't get bored but not too fast that you get lost! I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.......2003-03-16

Being in University, and having a housemate who has played the violin for +5 years does help . Since he 'refuses' to teach, and I don't feel comfortable asking, this book comes in great to fill the gaps.
If you have a music background, then reading the sheet music is easy.
It's a great methodical introduction to the notes and strings.
It's a bit on the skimpy side, but I geuss you get what you pay for. It would probably be best to go to a library, since this book can be mastered in 2 weeks.

1 out of 5 stars Like the music teacher you never wanted........2002-07-28

As a rank beginner who can't read music or play any other instrument, I bought this book hoping for a quick, friendly intro to the fiddle. But it doesn't really seem to be written for self-teaching; instead, it offers a series of "exercises" (i.e. not music!) for teachers to assign. What little text there is (the book is mostly music and a few pictures) is pedantic and unfriendly, and even in the illustrations the model never looks like he's enjoying the instrument. The material itself, while skimpy, is useful -- you learn how to play four notes on each string. I haven't found a better alternative, but this is not an encouraging place to begin.

5 out of 5 stars Mel Bay's Violin Primer by Frank Zucco.......2001-09-04

This is an excellent primer. As an adult beginner with years of piano experience, what I needed most was something to explain the violin in basic terms. This book does that -- and with many well-thought, straightforward photographs showing the reader exactly how to hold the instrument and bow. A video I had bought frustrated me. The video moved too fast, and hitting rewind constantly was distracting. But this primer is a BOOK! I could take my time (in front of a mirror -- highly recommended, by the way) and compare my position with the photographs. When I find a teacher, the book will still be an excellent reference until I learn instinctively how to hold the instrument and move the bow. If you're a violin beginner, this violin primer will be the best handful of dollars you spend.

Who becomes a legend most? For more than two years, a panel composed of such arbiters of culture as Leo Castelli, Rita Dove, Bruce Jenner, Joyce Carol Oates, Daniel Schorr, Gay Talese, Pierre Trudeau, and Eli Wallach pondered that question and came up with a list of the 200 most important icons of the 20th century. Their choices are compiled in this wonderfully designed book. Each icon merits a tall, vertically oriented, two-page spread. A full-page portrait is expertly reproduced on the right-hand side, and, given its length, a surprisingly informative biography takes up the facing page. Uncommon photos of the usual suspects are here--Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King Jr., James Joyce, Babe Ruth, Bette Davis, Jesse Owens, Marlon Brando, JFK, Anna Pavlova, even Michael Jordan. But some of the most pleasing inclusions are the surprises--the people who shaped the century but whose faces are less recognizable. This group includes philosophers Hannah Arendt and Carl Jung; South African doctor Christiann Barnard, who performed the first successful human heart transplant surgery; scientist Enrico Fermi, whose work led directly to the discovery of nuclear fission; Maria Montessori, who revolutionized early childhood education; legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini; and James Watson and Francis Crick, who discovered the shape of DNA. This is a well-timed book, for as the century draws to a close, one can hardly think of a better way to take stock of the dramatic events, advances, and--arguably--declines that have shaped the human experience over the past 100 years.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book, Despite Certain Omissions.......2001-11-19

This isn't really that bad a book. The text was well written for each individual mentioned and the photographs were quite good, my favorite was the one with Mikhail Gorbachev hand feeding a squirrel on a tree. Still, there are certain individuals this book left out who I thought should have made it. Below is a list of those who I feel should have been in this book.

Pope John Paul II
Nikita Khruschtev
J. Edgar Hoover
Ayatollah Khomeni
Wayne Gretzky
Vince Lombardi
Howard Stern
Jimi Hendrix
Thelonius Monk
The Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen
Lenny Bruce
George S. Patton
Joe Montana
Gloria Steinman
Janis Joplin
Harrison Ford
Irving Berlin
Bill Clinton
Charles Manson

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Cady is the best!.......1999-12-30

This book, I think is ine of the most influential books of the 20th century, and certainely one of the most entertaining! Mother Theresa, and Micheal Jordan were certainely, and are included in this book; but the thing that impresed me most is that I found Um Kolthum on the list. I thank Barrbara Cady for including her in, I greatly appreciate it. If you find a customer that disagrees with the content of this magneficent, beautiful book, don't agree with him. He is certainely a bad reader. People trust me with this! A great read!

5 out of 5 stars A real collectors Item.......1999-10-06

Unlike a number of other books about the ranking of the "greatest" of the 20th century, this book does not rank anyone. This book lists the 200 men and women, in alphabetical order, who have made a difference during the last 100 years.

Cady blends detail with a personal touch in each biographical synopsis. The photos, in black and white, give the reader a face to put to the story. Photographer Jean-Jacques Naudet is a master of capturing the essence of the person on film.

While the price of the book is a bit hefty, your money is well spent in this collectable piece of work. For the past hundred years you have read stories about JFK, Ali, Mother Theresa, Michael Jordan now you can own a part of history.

I was most impressed by the author's ability to remain unbiased in the reporting. While I may not have include some of the people, I was no doubt impressed by the list. I am certain that this book will be real family or school crowd pleaser well into the next century.

5 out of 5 stars Big Big Book.......1999-05-06

This is a massive book in terms of physical size. It has to weigh at least 5-10 pounds and could probably be used as a home protection device. Great gift idea. Giant!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, well-designed & -illustrated book.......1999-02-01

But, alas, too American in the perspective. The selection includes people who are only of importance in the U.S. area. I.e. baseball & football players and t.v. entertainers (Oprah!)And in choosing Oppenheimer and Fermi instead of the far more important Niels Bohr. Further, Karen Blixen is presented by her alias Isak Dinesen - quite embarassing. The photos, though, are phantastic and the layout creative. In spite of an American chauvenism in the selection, the book makes a brilliant statement heading for the millennium.

Icons: 200 Men and Women Who Have Made a Difference by Barbara Cady (Black Dog & Leventhal Publishing) A dramatic, distinguished record, Icons is a powerful and provocative look at the giants of our time-the groundbreakers, thought-provokers, visionaries, tyrants, trendsetters, and style-makers who have left an indelible mark on our world. The culmination of ten years' research on the part of author Barbara Cady and photo editor jean-Jacques Naudet, it features two hundred of our century's most recognizable faces-individuals who have helped form our modern sensibilities, for better or worse: men like John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, Elvis Presley, Mao Zedong, and Pablo Picasso; women like Marilyn Monroe, Margaret Thatcher, Aretha Franklin, Amelia Earhart, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

A lavish album, Icons presents an extraordinarily wide selection of people chosen by a panel of more than sixty international leaders in the arts, sciences, politics, fashion, and technology. Barbara Cady's lively and probing biographies tell the fascinating stories behind these individuals' great accomplishments, exploring the views, personal backgrounds, and dramatic contributions each "icon" has made. Through Cady's treatment, the politician, philosopher, scientist, artist, athlete, and entertainer is presented in his or her unique greatness-or infamy.

The rare black-and-white photographs in Icons establish the book's unparalleled visual impact. They are by turns elegiac and haunting, celebratory and enchanting-all are arresting portraits of the century's most familiar faces caught in unfamiliar and revealing lights. Culled from archives around the world, the images in Icons represent the best of modern photography, with works by such masters as Henri Cartier-Bresson himself one of the icons), Helmut Newton, Cecil Beaton, and Robert Capa.

Powerful, intriguing, and informative, Icons is a visually stunning, historically sweeping work, destined to become a collector's item.
The two hundred individuals included in Icons of the Twentieth Century were chosen with the help of a multi-national Board of Advisors, respected leaders in the arts and sciences, in politics, publishing, education, fashion, entertainment and technology. Asked to base their deletions, nominations and rankings on their following definition of an icon: "Individuals whose names and faces have impacted us all and whose deeds-for good or ill-have literally shaped the course of modern history." When the ballots were tallied, about fifteen percent of the 200-name list-the nominations which garnered only a few votes each-fell at the thin end of the statistical bell curve. It was here that the combined efforts of the author, the publisher and the project's editors and researchers were called into service.
No grouping, of course, can ever be complete, nor can there be any objective criteria for hierarchical importance-not even for who is included and who is not. Questions will immediately arise: Why Nasser and not Khomeni? Why not Idi Amin, whose face came to symbolize the destruction of Africa in the post-colonial period, or Kwame Nkuma, whose independent Ghana initially offered a better hope for a continent in turmoil? Why not Konrad Adenauer, who out of the ruins of the Third Reich established the beginnings of post-World War democracy in Germany? And why Emperor Hirohito and not Tojo whose leadership of Japan may have had more to do with World War II in Asia than the imperial family? In the end, it would have been impossible to include every famous political leader of the century without eliminating key individuals in, say, music or literature.
Acknowledging that in this century government leaders-whether mass executioners or sun-kings-ipso facto dominated the world stage, it was decided they would not overrun Icons.
There were many others who made us think differently about our world-originals like Alfred Kinsey, Buckminster Fuller and Marshall McLuhan-who were not included. In some cases, it was because heir faces were simply not as recognizable as others, an important consideration because of the book's defining concept of eikon, or image. A similar point can be made for many of the century's innovators, individuals whose inventions-the television, the computer, the jet engine, the Pill, penicillin-are much more well known than they are. But Icons was about people not things.
Given that the major categories of human endeavor were to be represented, choice was difficult when there were too many candidates in one category, which was often the case. Why Nureyev and not also Nijinsky or Balanchine? Why Billie Holiday and not also Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald? Marcel Proust and not also Thomas Mann and William Faulkner? Why Babe Ruth and not Joe DiMaggio? Why not dozens of other high profile sports stars and performers, all iconic in their way due to the development of mass media in our century? Behind each inclusion and exclusion lie endless arguments. But the selection made at the end of the day is at best a selection.

          Book Description

Suppose someone claimed that we are not running out of petroleum? Or that life on Earth began below the surface of our planet? Or that oil and gas are not "fossil fuels"? Or that if we find extraterrestrial life it is likely to be within, not on, other planets? You might expect to hear statements like these from an author of science fiction. But what if they came from a renowned physicist, an indisputably brilliant scientist who has been called "one of the world's most original minds"? In the The Deep Hot Biosphere, Thomas Gold sets forth truly controversial and astonishing theories about where oil and gas come from, and how they acquire their organic "signatures." The conclusions he reaches in this book might be at first difficult to believe, but they are supported by a growing body of evidence, and by the indisputabel stature and seriousness Gold brings to any scientific enterprise. In this book we see a brilliant and boldly orginal thinker, increasingly a rarity in modern science, as he developes a revolutionary new view about the fundamental workings of our planet. Thomas Gold is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and an Emertius Professor at Cornell University. Regarded as one of the most creative and wide-ranging scientists of his generation, he has taughtat Cambridge University and Harvard, and for 20 years was the Director of the Cornell Center for Radiophysics and Space Research.

2 out of 5 stars Well, but where's the abiogenic oil?.......2007-07-12

Someone sent parts of this book to me, last year, by e-mail.This book has many parts (perhaps), with value.Well, every DAY, the world spends about US$6,000,000,000 ;only with oil.Reading this book, it seems that there's cheap oil for everyone, for many centuries.Following this book, there's a Saudia Arabia full with oil, some miles under your nose.
Well, oil companies, such as Exxon, spends every year hundreds of billions of US dollars buying oil from islamic world.Drilling a well cost(On shore) some millions of dollars. If the "theories" of this book are correct, why any oil company is following them?
Such as reading a book about UFOs, there's claims, but where's an UFO or an ET for everyone see?
          In no place, ever!
The same happens on this book. There's a claim about abiogenic oil.Well, but where's this abiogenic oil?Among millions of oil wells in the world, there's anyone produciing oil or gas, from non sedimentary rocks. This book claims that a granite rock is producing oil in Vietnam;nonsense.
Here in Brazil , we have a proverb:"Muito bom, para ser verdade".Translating this brazilian proverb, we have:"Too good to be true".This book has an idea that seems, to be too good to be true.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive book, a must read.......2007-06-10

I started reading this book with a completely different understanding (even a prejudice) of oil genesis.
The reasonings make sense and the observations described are compelling.
As a scientist in a different field I am not sure that what presented is the complete picture, and that some parts may be mistaken, but I have a strong feeling that the fundamental idea is correct.
Oil, or at least part of it, is likely a relic of Earth's genesis.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging Conventional Dogma.......2007-06-03

If the theory of Thomas Gold is true - and the evidence is incredibly persuasive - then the implications for climate change etc is massive. This sort of information should be put out publicly for open criticism because the consequences are to large too ignore!

5 out of 5 stars Down with dogma! It feels great to question something you've always been told is fact without ever being given an explanation.......2007-01-05

I can't say enough about this book and how much it impressed me. As a PhD student in chemistry, I would say this book raises some very valuable points. While the ideas presented have been introduced prior to this book (several russion journals) this adds new evidence and data suggesting that our petroleum resources are not from decomposed biological material and that we need to re-evaluate this idea. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force by a very gifted amateur.......2007-01-01

Gold shows how embarrassingly little we really know about our planet and ourselves with speculations on the nature of the geology beneath our feet, and the origin of our type of life.

In an era where we are proud of exploring the origins of the cosmos, speculating about the nature of a reality beyond even the weirdness of quantum mechanics, robotically visiting other planets, and seemingly able to manipulate our genetic materials at will, it is humbling to see just how mysterious and unknown our own origin and the ground beneath our feet remain.

If Gold is correct, we should be hearing about new species and industrial enzymes found in crude oil and earthquakes predicted by gas sniffers. We might even become a little more cautious about spreading our own DNA throughout the solar system before investigating what is already out there.

3 out of 5 stars OK Book, don't use as only reference.......2007-09-03

I bought this book after failing the first time and also used PrepLogic software but failed. The book helps somewhy but doesn't really go far enough for the needs of the exam.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-09

I thought the book did a good explaining all the technologies needed to pass the exam. This along with Transcender or some other practice test software you should be ready for the exam. One thing about the book that I found odd - the book ended the last chapter (chapter 10) with this... "In the next chapter, we are going to take a look at how you will implement an efficient IP addressing infrastructure." Huh? My book only had 10 chapters. Maybe Chapter 11 got axed at the last moment??? Poor job of editing whatever the case.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good base.......2005-06-01

This is a good book, it will get you studying in the right direction. The contents do cover what you will expect in the 70-297 test however I strongly suggest that in addition to this book you use an online test preparation tool (I used Self Test). You will need the practice when facing the verbose (-vv) questions on the test.

So after using this book, Self Test software and lots of studying I squeaked by on my first try!

                            Ben

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide!.......2004-09-04

This book was excellent in preparing for the 70-297 exam. Each chapter introduces new concepts, and builds upon the previous chapters in a very logical and easy to understand method. There are many real world examples, and great practice questions for review after each chapter. The CD included with the book has excellent additional materials as well. I would purchase more books from Brad Price and Sybex for my future study needs! A+ all around.

This is a well written and well presented book. It helps the reader decide which options are most appropriate to his/her scenario and includes lots of new information relevant to Windows Server 2003.

The book goes beyond the bare minimum information needed to pass the exam and instead offers lots of additional tips and useful pieces of information which the authors have no doubt acquired through their years of experience in the world of designing Active Directory solutions.

                            Thoroughly recommended!
