Understand MS' thinking.......2005-05-15
I agree with some of the feedback here. This is not a book for learning ASP.NET. But then the book does state this early on. By all means read my review, even if for an experience, but I wouldn't until you have had an experience with ASP.NET and Visual Studio. To appreciate this book for any benefit you can find from it, go on a course first.
This book is intended only for exam preparation and in places, it serves it's purpose well here. The official Microsoft textbook for the course is just as thick and goes into tremendous detail and manages to use simple language in places. It doesn't convey the exam experience, but then it's not designed to! I made essential notes for the first 10 chapters and, typed up, I have 5 pages. The first 10 chapters comprise 200! The MS textbook has demonstrations, practices, and explanations, which explains why it is so thick.
From what I can tell, in sitting the exam Microsoft don't expect you to be a world class ASP.NET developer. Microsoft appear mainly concerned with ensuring you can concentrate in intricate detail (trying not to scare you: the difference between some understandings is just one word), think according to the understandings and concepts associated with the task at hand (and remember them), and that you are virtually fluent with the tools and the technologies. I wouldn't sit the exam if you haven't played with Visual Studio and made at least a simple Web application. Judging by some of the sample questions, Microsoft assume you have done so and because you gain knowledge in the process, such as realising that a button doesn't have to be coded for other parts of a Web form to work. Programming skill comes with time and Microsoft are kind enough to understand this.
One lesson I drew from a sample question is that I need to read the exam question *very carefully* and study the provided answers with the same care. The exam is multiple choice so the real test is making a judgement call. This is just one of the daily skills involved with programming.
If you know the ASP.NET technology to the dot (at least to the knowledge requirement of the official course book), can read code and follow what its doing (whether correct or not), think programmatically (the science of writing a program), applying all applicable knowledge in the process, and devise a solution provided it solves the problem, you should pass the exam with flying colours.
That's quite a read I know, but then so is this book and only attempt it if you have done a course on ASP.NET. And, in my opinion, only read it to test yourself for readiness; to get a feeler.
Frustratingly Incomplete.......2004-03-22
It looks like the book was rushed out the door. While there seems to be some good information in it, I was repeatedly frustrated with the end of the chapter tests asking questions that were covered nowhere in the book! Then when I did the first of the included Prep Logic tests, some of the answers were opposite of what was stated in the book. If you can't be consistent within the scope of the book it really throws it's reliably into question. Don't plan on using this as your sole resource.
Passed using this book but stay away from prep logic.......2003-12-24
I passed the exam using this book. I use .Net at work and read one intro book before this one. This is a good book and good practice tests at the end of the book tested skills that the exam tested. I actually saw very similar questions on the test. Some of the sample questions did not come from the text of the chapters, which I see a lot of people complain about, but I was OK with that. They do explain in the opening chapter that this should not be used to learn the basics of the language.
One thing to note is that the Prep Logic exams included on the CD are awful. I've tried the ones that came with the 70-305, 70-306 and 70-310 books. All of them had blatant errors. For the 306 Prep Logic I did the first 5 questions and every one of the answers was blatantly wrong. Que really should dump those guys as the Prep Logic quality reflects poorly on their excellent books.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS.......2003-11-03
I have passed some Microsoft exams using Exam Cram 2 books as my sole study resource--that will always be the standard by which these books are judged. This book falls far short.
This book introduces you to the various topics on the 70-305 test, but does not cover a single topic in enough depth to be worthwhile. The review questions and practice exams are weak, also.
Excellent for the exam.......2003-07-29
If your goal is to pass the exam then this book is for you. This is not a book to learn ASP.NET. So you should not expect any basic stuff. Read other books to learn ASP.NET then use this to pass the exam. I highly recommend it. I read it and gave the tests at the end and passed in the first attempt.

Its not the best but...........2006-11-04
So far my only gripe is that is a minature book. I was expecting a regular sized book to read, and didnt know it was a pocket book. It appears to be very informal.
Glad it was cheap.......2005-09-27
This book is nothing like I expected. It's more about actually building a studio in your home as opposed to modifying things to coexist with a studio. It's from the UK, so some of the terminology is a little different, and parts are very technical.I guess I was looking for "Home Studios for Idiots", and this ain't it! This might be good if you have more room-time-money, than I do.
simple, perfect.......2004-09-25
...just enough information. I'm busy, man, so are you - you are a project musician trying to build a project studio, probably wondering to yourself how in the world owens corning 703 can be so difficult to find...you need a book with simple diagrams, simple language to tell you what you need to know. If you are building a room for bob clearmountain, then this ain't for you- if you are like the rest of the 99% of us just trying to fit a studio into your exisiting space on a budget- I think that this is the way to go....
no nonsense.......2001-09-29
People tend to criticize this book because it's too small and basic. Big deal! It's priced accordingly and the title clearly says "Basic". That aside, the information is as clear and concise and no-nonsense as you can get for this subject. I've read several more "complete" and technical books on the subject, and it was only until I read this book that things actually came into perspective. Believe me, there is no better book to get a clear overview on how to build a small, efficient studio. After that, and armed with foreknowlege, you can get the technical stuff.
soundproofing...not much more.......2000-09-08
Half the book talks about soundproofing, a quarter on VERY basic wiring, and a quarter on a glossary. It's miniature too-the size of a passport. Not a good basic overview of studio design.

Rubber-stamp queen Dee Gruenig returns with more dazzling ideas, this time letting her gleeful imagination loose on another very popular craft--scrapbooking. Combining her bold and colorful approach to stamping with her lifelong love of making memory albums, she offers many delightful ways to create unforgettable pages that unite the best of both crafts. Rather than purchasing preprinted scrapbook pages, follow Gruenig's straightforward instructions to make sponged, stickered, bordered, patterned, striped, plaid, embossed, brayered, spattered, or themed backgrounds that help even the most ho-hum photos come alive. Not only do her designs nicely frame full-photo images on the page, but many are actually intricate background landscapes that cleverly incorporate individual figures cut from the photos, decoupage style. --Amy Handy

dissappointed..........2006-07-11
I love to see Dee doing projects on The Carol Duvall show so I bought this book and her first book.
Sadly-Dee's teaching skills are much better on film than in a book.
Dee's project are very involved and multi layered-but with just a small paragraph per project-it is almost impossible for all but the most experienced stamper to follow.
Another problem is that both books start out very complicated-there is no simple projects to warm up on.
While I love color-anyone who tends to like more muted tones will be overwhelmed by the bold, almost dizzying use of color in Dee's work-and probably turned off because there are no other versions shown-just the very colorful depictions so it is hard to envision these projects in any other way.
I do understand the Dee has a couple of instructional DVD's out-I would suggest that you get those and learn her techniques on film before tackling her books.
3 stars.
Over use of rubber stamps???.......2005-07-25
Everything in the book is for rubber stamps. There is no incorperating it into your scrapbook, its all stamped. I think this book would be way to overwelming for the beginner stamper. It does have alot of nice ideas but depends to heavily on just rubber stamping everything except your pictures. There is nothing showing how to do a multi-embellished lay-out with other things besides stamps. There is 143 pages in this book.
Vivid Book for Rubber Stampers & Scrapbookers!.......2001-03-08
I've really enjoyed this book, especially its vivid illustrations. It's given me a lot of new ideas for incorporating rubber stamping into my scrapbooks. I've only given it four stars, though, because no information is given on sources for the supplies used. The book depends heavily on sticker paper and certain rubber stamps, and I would really have liked to know how and where to order these. Only an addresss and phone number are given for requests for further information.
Chock full of great illustrations and "how to" descriptions.......1998-07-14
This incredibly vivid book is packed full of ideas to enliven and personalize scrapbooks with stamps and other artistic techniques. Its highly worthwhile as a general purpose "how to" book for projects other than scrapbooks. Its formatted with a page illustrating a technique or multiple decorative techniques - the facing page has succinct instructions. This book is high on content. I think this book's a must for any rubber stamper or anyone whose just looking for ways to enliven their scrapbooks. I, however, only rated it 4 stars for one reason and that may be just personal preference - you might feel different. The scrapbook pages are so intensely decorated and vivacious that the photo(s) is over-shadowed badly. I myself would tone the decoration down a little to better showcase the photo.
Great resource for scrapbookers and rubber stampers........1998-04-24
Dee Gruenig, pioneer in the fields of scrapbooking and rubber stamping, has finally published a book on combining these two activities. Through bold and extensive use of color and style she gives many examples on how to liven up your scrapbook pages.
Scrapbookers new to stamping will easily learn and enjoy the pictures and step-by-step directions of techniques used in rubber stamping, many of which are familiar to stampers from her previous books and videos. Stamps used in this books are Posh Impressions, ideally suited for scrapbook decorating.
My only complaint on this book was the extensive use of sticker paper, using the rubber stamping mostly to make stickers and sticker frames for the photographs and not as much on using the stamped image to decorate the page itself. However, for the beginnig stamper and scrapbooker, this will probably be a much easier way to embellish the new family heirloom. For more advanced crafters looking for more elaborate techniques (layering, masking, etc.), I would advise you look for a more advanced rubber stamping book to use as a companion to this one.

Customer Reviews:
utterly worthless........2005-11-22
There's nothing here that you cant find yourself on the net
in less than five minutes. This book was written for the kind of
person that has trouble finding the "ON" switch - not a real
network administrator. If you know what you're doing, then dont
waste your money.
Know you're covered.......2004-10-04
Most people in the business world are likely familiar with the term "CYA", which is exactly what this book is designed to do. The authors intend that reading this book will give IIS administrators the information they need to keep their networks secure, and hence keep their jobs. This is the first CYA book I've read, and I was quite impressed by the nice balance between providing enough useful information without overkill. The book is designed to get right to the point by showing (not telling) exactly what is required in securing an IIS 6 installation.
Each chapter is focused on a specific section of IIS security. Chapters cover topics as varied as Basic IIS security, Advanced IIS security, monitoring, and general Server 2003 hardening. Each chapter contains the some information on the Microsoft recommended procedure for the particular practice (what the authors call "By the Book"). Additionally, you will find many sections throughout the book labeled "Realty Check", which is designed to highlight how to either do something different from what Microsoft recommends or what some of the problems associated with the recommended procedure might be. Finally, "Notes from the Underground" popup frequently, which help illustrate how hackers might utilize poor security around the illustrated practice in order to gain something.
I found the chapters to be well laid-out, easy to follow, and right to the point. This book helped provide some real insight to various security practices around IIS, and was quite interesting to read as well. This book is a must-have if you are responsible for monitoring or maintaining IIS 6 in your infrastructure.
I am definitely looking forward to reading the next in the series of CYA books!
Your A** is Covered is rude.......2004-09-26
It is a practical book.
Each chapter is lacking of coherent.
I still feel there are more elegant ways than "Your A** is Covered".
It is better to have scenario to illustrate why this should be used or done.
Excellent book!.......2004-08-11
Thank you guys for an excellent book! I have been developing applications for IIS for many years and think you have done a great job in explaining how it all works. I also very much like the "reality check" concept. Keep up the good work!
