4 out of 5 stars Perfect for non professional and beginners.......2007-08-23

This is the perfect book for someone who needs the basics of audio techniques. It's easy and quick to read. Higly raccommended if you need to understand the basics. If you are already on an advanced level this one will be no such useful instead.

4 out of 5 stars Good For The Road!!!!!!.......2007-03-16

I have purchased and review several of these "Basic Series" books and I have been pleased with all of them. Paul White authored the majority of them and did a fine job. You can buy them individually or they come in a set of four. This book is great for its intended purpose, a handbook to carry around with you to live gigs. This book is small (6 inches x 4 inches) and relatively inexpensive. Therfore you can throw this book in your gig back and not be worried about it to much. Now this book is not going to be the most comprehensive on the subject, but it is good for answering the quick question before a live gig. What I like most about this book is that it has an appendix at the end that show you every possible type of cable connection and the proper name for it. It also has a fairly in-depth glossary.

Book Description

This beginner's guide to the basics of live concert sound mixing and mic techniques is written by industry vet Jerry Slone, whose baptism-by-fire road experiences will teach you need-to-know stuff they simply don't teach in school! It provides easy-to-understand coverage aimed at the novice on topics such as: sound and hearing; microphone models, specs and techniques; mixers; equalization; amplifiers; speakers; the audio chain; schools and universities for continuing education; and much more. Ever since talent show appearances in his pre-teen years, Jerry Slone's been the guy who got stuck hooking up the PA and trying to tweak it to make it sound better. After graduating from the Recording Industry program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), he road-managed and mixed house audio for a touring band. Today, he works with acts signed to major labels.

1 out of 5 stars Not much there........2004-08-30

This book is a waste of time. What a disappointment. I've been doing live sound for years, and am interested in tips on how to improve. The advice in this book is so basic and general as to be useless. Talk to others, Slone recommends. Duh. There are a couple tips on mic placement worth thinking about (how to mic a guitar amp to get various tonal qualities). Not much else for anyone with any experience at all.

Could this be targeted for the rank beginner? If so, it fails there as well. One might expect that this book would run through the basics of how to hook up a sound system. What cable plugs in where? But it doesn't. If you're a beginner, you're just as clueless after reading this as if you'd never picked it up. Heck, you might even be more confused.

No desctiptions of what all those gadgets in the rack are and how to use them.

I feel bad about being so negative, and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings - but this book is quite worthless.

Book Description

David Reid has gathered together the novelists, journalists, and cultural critics who could best address the myths, define the truths, and interpret the media images of the second largest city in the U.S. They report on the new Latino and Asian populations of South Central and the East Side and the old establishment of the West side; Downtown with its heavily mortgaged office towers held by Canadian and Japanese landlords; shuttered factories and thriving sweatshops; architecture from Irving Gill to Frank O. Gehry; messiahs from Krishnamurti to L. Ron Hubbard; rituals of power in Movieland and yoga and seduction in Beverly Hills. Ranging from acute political commentary to evocative literary impressions, this is a collection that will engage not only those who live in southern California but all those curious about this megalopolis in the desert.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a really intresting.......1999-07-22

Sex, death, and God in L.A., is a book that makes you want to know more about Los Angeles. This book makes you think about the different points of view and makes you come to your own conclusions about social, cultural, and economical differences.

4 out of 5 stars The truth behing Sex,Death and God in L.A........1999-07-22

Sex, death and God in LA is a book targeted to a market of people who want to know about economic, demographic, political, and other issues about Los Angeles. The book is a collection of essays written by Eve Babitz, Alexander Cockburn, Mike Davis, Lynell George, Thomas S. Hines, Jeremy Larner, Ruben Martinez, David Reid, Carolyn See, and David Thomson who truly enlighten the reader about the benefits and problems of living in Southern California. The book was published on April 20, 1992. As a consequence much of the information as well as the feelings of the authors toward society may differ from the perspective of a reader in the late nineties. The reader will notice that the authors of these essays explain in detail almost every subject that they quote. David Reid editor of the book cleverly calls California the American Alexandria implying California's likeness to the city founded in Egypt in 332 BC by Alexander the Great which was located being close to the sea and inhabited by millions of immigrants. Sex, Death and God in L.A will take the reader through a journey where the authors explain the paradox that exists between L.A as racism, polluted and multicultural state and also paradise. The authors criticize the lack of values that exist in LA. They quote the case of the Menendez brothers. They condemn racism and talk about the Rodney King case. They give their opinion on US economy and politics and forecast times of recession. Finally they talk about the demographics of Los Angeles. There is about 20 million immigrants in the US, 8% can be found in Southern California. Sex, Death and God in LA discusses the problems that have developed from the immigration of Vietnamese, Asian, Koreans, Latino, Blacks and Europeans to California. The authors discuss their impact on California's economy and how they have helped California to emerge during the past decades. In short California is seen as a place where religions, languages, customs and why not - sexuality, lifestyle, and habits - from people from all around the world meet to give place to the unique Californian Culture. I definitely recommend Sex, Death and God in L.A. However, the reader has to be a critical thinker. He or she has to be aware and informed of the issues that are quoted and explained in the book. I think people who read this book and do not know much about California may not be able to understand the book or get the wrong image about it. Finally, I would like to say that although Sex, Death and God is a good book to read it doesn't explain fully what people should know about California. The book goes in detail explaining the troubles and how the low-income minorities contribute to the American society. Nevertheless, the book doesn't talk much about the high-income minority. In other words they give the reader the idea that California is inhabited by minorities that are not successful or that are just part of the working class, while whites people manage country. I would like to end recommending the book for critical thinkers who do not let themselves convince easily. The book is worth the amount paid and more. If you feel the need to know more about LA this is the book to read.

3 out of 5 stars A book with ruff vocabulary........1999-07-22

The book Sex,Death and God in L.A. by David Reid (Editor) is a very difficult book to read. Judging on what I have read, I would not recommend it to just anyone with a low vocabulary. Although, the book does gives you the opportunity to learn new words. The vocabulary in this book is very structural. My vocabulary is not very strong, but by reading this book I have learned new words and more about Los Angeles. If you are into knowing more about Los Angeles and having a wonderful vocabulary, the book Sex, Death and God in L.A. is the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars Unfamiliar names, streets, and buildings........1999-07-21

The book Sex, Death and God in L.A. by David Reid(Editor) is a good book to read for L.A. The book has alot of great storys about Los Angeles how it came to be knowend as the melting pot of Califorina. Their are lots of variety of works in this book. The ones that I have read are great I am not just saying this because its part of the readings of our class no. The book has unfamiliar names, streets, districs, and buildings that I never new where there I went to explore to see if this names, streets, and buildings where still there and some were. I really enjoyed the book, great stuff.

          4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2000-06-29

This is a wonderful selection of paper dolls illustrating the early 1890's. It has ten beautiful fashions for the bride Jessamine and five for her younger sister and bridesmaid Jacintha. It is excellent for paper doll collectors but is not so suitable for young children, as it is printed on lightweight paper and may not survive the test of time.

          Book Description

          What is this book about?

XSLT 2.0 Programmer's Reference, 3rd Edition, is the authoritative reference guide to the language. Without using the formal and inaccessible language of the W3C specifications, it tells you exactly what every construct in the language does, and how it is intended to be used. This book is a reference rather than a tutorial; it is designed for the professional programmer who is using the language every day. It is the book that people quote when they claim that a particular product is giving the wrong answer, and the book that implementers of the language turn to when they want clarification of the specifications.

At the same time, the book is readable. Reviews of the previous editions of the XSLT Programmer’s Reference, which this book grew from, show that readers appreciate the background material on the design thinking behind the language, the essay on functional programming, the occasional dry wit, the gentle criticism of the language specification when appropriate, and the fact that the examples stray into a diverse range of interesting application areas.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2007-09-12

In addition to his obvious authority on the subject of XSLT Michael Kay is one of the best writers out there. This book gives a thorough explication of the history and concepts behind XSLT that is valuable for newcomers and informative for more experienced hands. It is written for those with experience with programming languages but new to XSLT or new to XSLT 2.0. It presents thorough documentation for elements and functions, with examples of their use.

3 out of 5 stars Not a stand-alone book, terrible format for reference.......2007-07-23

From the book's introduction: "In previous editions, XSLT and XPath were covered in a single volume. This time, they have been divided into two separate books: this one covers XSLT 2.0, while the companion book 'XPath 2.0 Programmer's Reference" describes XPath." ... "This book is intended to be used alongside the companion volume ... Since XSLT 2.0 has such a strong dependence on XPath 2.0, you really need both books."

It turns out, most of the questions I needed answered aren't even covered in this book. That was frustrating for me.

I later purchased the companion XPath 2.0 book. In their favor, I will say that I have never had a question about XSLT or XPath that wasn't answered by these books.

However, both books are perhaps the worst-formatted reference books I have ever seen. Much of the book consists of an alphabetical reference of XML elements or XPath functions. Unfortunately, the page headers and footers only contain page numbers and chapter titles. They do not contain the name of the element or function that is described on that page. So you can't just riff through the pages watching for your function to appear in the footer.

There is a heading for each element or function name, but the font used for the sub-headings are as large as (if not larger than) the major headings. There are no page breaks between functions or elements. So you can't even visually scan the pages looking for your functions.

Finally, the table of contents consists largely of function or element names on the left, with page numbers on the right, separated by about five inches. But there are no dot leaders between them. So, even when you resort to using the table of contents to find the section you need, you have to use a ruler to find the page number.

3 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2007-02-21

I would not think this book is a "start learning xslt book". It is not meant to be start of with. It is a definately a great reference book for xslt 1.0 and updates for xslt 2.0. This is a kind of book in which you work your way from the index at the back of the book to the desired topic.

2 out of 5 stars For sale: One boat anchor. .......2006-12-14

Agree with others that it is not a good introduction book. Dense, long-winded, I kept waiting for information I could use without needing to read 4 other chapters.

As an added bonus, I'll throw in the XPath book as well. For those of you who have two boats.

3 out of 5 stars Stick to the older release.......2006-11-22

I've bought the XSLT Programmer's Reference from the same author and it's a terrific book, so when XSLT 2.0 came out, I immediately bought it ... only to be highly disapponted. The previous edition (or the original book if you like) covered everything you need to know (or ever wanted to know) to become an XSLT 1.0 guru. This one contains half of it, the other half is in another book (XPATH 2.0).

While I understand that XSLT 2.0 has expanded so much that XSLT+XPATH don't fit into a single book (plus it generates more revenue for the author and the publisher), buying this book at the current point in time (where there is very limited support for XSLT 2.0) is a questionable choice. You're much better off buying the older version, which covers (the whole span of) technology used in actual products.

          Book Description

This book is for anyone working with today's mainstream XML technologies. It was specifically designed to serve as a handy but thorough quick reference that answers the most common XML-related technical questions. It goes beyond the traditional pocket reference design by providing complete coverage of each topic along with plenty of meaningful examples. Each chapter provides a brief introduction, which is followed by the detailed reference information. This approach assumes the reader has a basic understanding of the given topic. The detailed outline (at the beginning), index (in the back), bleeding tabs (along the side), and the page headers/footers were designed to help readers quickly find answers to their questions.

          5 out of 5 stars just excellent.......2007-06-23

Not only explains very clearly all the complex stuff of xml schema when u're a beginner, but also well organized so that it's easy to come back to it when u have a precise questionning.
For me it's THE reference book about xsd, like stroustrup for c++ and kerningam for c.

3 out of 5 stars Broad but Shallow.......2007-03-27

This is a reference book. It's not intended to read, but rather provide quick reference to just about any XML related topic. Unfortunately, the examples are very short and don't provide a great deal of insite. My next task is to look for a reference book that does provide useful examples -- I hope one exists.

5 out of 5 stars a great book to have at your side while coding.......2005-01-11

Who can remember all the little details surrounding XML? This book is a great summery of the most important XML technologies. It isn't a tutorial, it isn't for beginners, it's for "What's the name of that XPath function that removes excess spaces?" (normalize-space). Highly recommended for finding answers fast.

4 out of 5 stars easy to use and very useful.......2004-05-05

Keeping in mind that this is a "quick" reference, this book is organised well and very easy to use. When learning XML I had it by my side many times and almost always found what I was looking for. My only comment for improvement would be a more comprehensive index and maybe some a more suitable cover design (I am constantly pointing people to the text on the cover in order to convice them this is a book about XML).

5 out of 5 stars The single most essential xml book I own.......2004-01-01

This isn't a "textbook" of xml -- if you want a guided introductory tutorial, look elsewhere. But if you're anything like me, once you've got past the intro stage, you need a good memory-jogger and "explain-that-to-me-quick-just-one-more-time" resource at your side while you're working on a project. That's what this book provides, and it does it brilliantly, insightfully, and without the endless, distracting and generally useless drivel of many xml books. The explanations unfailingly come right to the point, and it's rich with short, helpful examples. It's obvious the authors have really developed in the real world! There is no book on my xml shelf that gets more use (and collects less dust) than this one. Buy it and you'll be glad you did. (I'm on my second copy!)

As XML begins to take hold, the eXtensible Stylesheet Language: Transformation (XSLT) standard will be playing a major role in making all those XML predictions a reality. Author Michael Kay exudes enthusiasm in this guide, XSLT Programmer's Reference, by taking every opportunity to illustrate the power and flexibility of XSLT.

Kay calls XSLT the "SQL of the Web"--a phrase that is sure to perk up the ears of many readers expecting a simple documentation of just another Web-language standard. Like other Wrox Programmer's Reference series titles, this book starts off with chapters that rapidly introduce the concepts and set the context for the core of the book, which is a complete documentation of the XSLT standard. The book uses this space well to explore the transformation process and the tree structure that is used for both input and output of style sheet documents. By the time the reader gets to the reference section of the book, he or she will be convinced of the power of XSLT.

Each element of XSLT is covered with concise examples that include both the source XML code and style sheet code. XSLT style sheets can be used in a variety of ways and across a wide spectrum of complexity. The book helps the reader grasp this concept by presenting four style-sheet design patterns that comprise the vast majority of implementations. The text looks at each, demonstrating how to identify the design pattern by its content and apply it to appropriate circumstances.

XSLT is the true muscle behind XML and is integral to putting XML to work in the real world. This title is simply a must-have for any developer utilizing XML. --Stephen W. Plain

          Book Description

          What is this book about?

This compact, relevant, updated version reflects recent changes in the XSLT specification and developments in XSLT parsers. The material on tools and implementations has been revised; so too have all the examples. It also includes a new chapter on writing extension functions.

XML has firmly established itself as the universal standard for managing data for the web and is now being implemented on a wide scale.

XSL (eXtensible Stylesheet Language), a vital companion to XML, is used for two main purposes: to format or style XML data so that it can be displayed in a browser and to transform XML data (XSLT). When you transform an XML document, you manipulate the data into a new structure, for example, re-ordering the data. This enables the same data store to be used in an unlimited number of ways. XSLT is a flexible, customizable, and cross-platform language.

XSLT is a notoriously difficult language to understand, but this book, while being a complete reference to the recommendation, will also give code examples showing how it all ties together and can be effectively employed in a real-world development scenario.

          What does this book cover?

In this book, you'll find the following topics covered:

          Who is this book for?

This book is for programmers already using XML to organize their data in applications and for those who want to use the power and compatibility of XSLT to improve the display of their data. The book is in three parts: a detailed introduction to the concepts of the language, a reference section giving comprehensive specifications and working examples of every feature, and an exploitation guide giving advice and case studies for the advanced user.

4 out of 5 stars Wealth of information obscured by the editing, writing, and organization.......2007-06-05

This review is for "XSLT: Programmer's Reference 2nd Edition." The book covers XSLT 1.0 and XPath 1.0. Although these are "old" technologies, they are still heavily used in software in many industries. While there are newer books covering XSLT 2.0 and XPath 2.0, those technologies have not achieved widespread support, so you will want to rely on this book for the next few years.

Michael Kay is one of the leading authorities on XSLT, XML, and XPath, and it clearly shows in the content of this book. There is a lot of detail to his explanations, and the topics he covers are comprehensive, including little-discussed items that other books fail to cover. There is a wealth of information in this book. Mind you, this is a reference book, and it's not conducive to being read front-to-back. You do need some knowledge of the subject to be able to find what you need.

Unfortunately, the organization, editing, writing is not as good as the technical information itself. The writing style is similar to writing found in a technical paper, so it is somewhat hard reading. At times, the author repeats himself over several paragraphs as if he didn't know he already stated the information previously. The page headings don't have chapter designations, so when the author refers to a chapter (without a page number), you can't find the chapter without going back to the table of contents and finding the page number. The index is also a little disorganized as some keywords aren't always where one might think. Overall, it looked like there was so much information that the editors could not figure out how to organize it effectively.

Despite these serious flaws in organization, editing, and writing, the coverage of the subject matter is the most comprehensive I have found thus far. I've spent money to buy other books, including O'Reilly ones, and I still refer to this book, even though I know this book is not the best read. That is why I have to give it 4 stars rather than 3 stars; the information is too good to pass up.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for XSLT Developers.......2007-03-24

I just finished up about 3 years on a job where one of my primary functions was editing, troubleshooting, teaching, and writing XSLT. I started that job as an experienced programmer with little XSLT experience, and I found this book relatively easy to navigate. I referred to this book constantly. It was indispensable as a reference for XPath and XSLT functions. Whenever I thought "How do I build the code to grab this XML?" or "What's the name of that function?" I would crack open this book and put together the pieces.
Note that there is a new XSLT reference out by Michael Kay-- that may be preferable if you are interested in XSLT 2.0.

1 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere for XSLT Book.......2006-03-05

This is the worst technical book I've ever used. There is no organization to it, and there is redundant information, especially in the elements listing section. There are areas that are extremely verbose and make little sense while other areas could use simple, less wordy explanation follwed by an example. This book makes a good paper weight, that's about it.

2 out of 5 stars Very tough and unordered reading.......2005-12-09

It is a pity but I have to write I am not satisfied with the book. It is kind of a book which does not concetrate on the main purpose of a reading - "to learn something". Of course I understand - it is programmer's reference but even so there is a lot of introductory parts which could be done much better.
There are parts that are very very talkative and give nowadays "vain" information and on the other hand there are parts which should be absolutely more narrative. The book reminds me a kind of "scientific" or "academic" book. From this point of view it is quite good. It is for people who have time to read it in their labs. It is the book for a long time. You absolutely learn a lot of useful topics but you have to find your own way of reading.

5 out of 5 stars Well organized, well written, well published... Well done!.......2005-08-29

As other's have noted, this book presents all the relevant information in a logical order with clear and well-designed examples, leading the reader from basics to complexities. The author maintains an engaging style, never dull or dry, which (if you ask me) is a great accomplishment considering the topic.

I was especially impressed with his section on "the whys and hows" of functional programming where the author provides just enough computer science history and theory to set the context, and he really explains how to use FP effectively in XSLT and why the language is structured this way. I thought his presentation would be accessible to an intelligent non-programmer, while not talking down to professional programmers. Throughout the book, there is a masterful balance of tutorial and depth.

One judge of a computer book's quality is in the examples, whether there are typographical and logic errors. How can you trust that the book's information is correct if the samples don't even run? There is no such problem here; it's obvious that the samples were actually tested (Gasp!) before being included in the book. (And yes, the lack of such diligence exists in many other texts.) Kudos to the author and publishers!
