Lift Every Voice and Sing II: An African American Hymnal.......2007-07-16
The book is great. I want to incorporate African American hymns in my liturgy and this book is a wonderful resource.
Singing with Joy.......2007-06-27
This book brings back memories of songs I grew up with, plus new songs I have never sung before, and no, I am not an African American, but I did grow up in the South, and went to a Baptist Church, and sang many of these songs.
Lift Every Voice and Sing II.......2007-06-11
It is a wonderful hymnal. I would like to order more used copies.
Wonderful Music.......2006-03-07
These are beautiful arrangements of African American religious songs and melodies, not too difficult for someone with intermediate piano-playing ability. I got this as a Christmas present, and have used it happily ever since. My only suggestion for improvement would be a spiral-bound edition, to make it easier to keep the book open on the piano stand.

Book Description
This selection of more than forty poems from a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance includes both uncompromising indictments of racial injustice and celebrations of the triumphs of African-Americans.
With a Preface by Sondra Kathryn Wilson
"[Johnson's poetry] is an exhortation to loose the bonds of dreary second-class citizenship and humiliating segregation and devastating racism. The lyrics bid the reader to be free, to walk with gratitude over ground red with the blood of our ancestors; encourages us to be free to bid the day good morning with hopeful heart, to adore the Creator with gladsome hearts for the battles won and to ask of that same Creator for strength for the battles yet to come. James Weldon Johnson aptly, deeply, with love and humor and a powerful rhyming tongue, has told our story and sung our song."-- Maya Angelou

Uplifting Role Models.......2000-10-04
This book should be part of each St. Louisans home library!
Interviews highlight the celebrated accomplishments of the community's brothers, sisters, grandfathers, role models hear in the heart of the city. The book features professional and personal role models including ministers, doctors, boxers, entrepenuers, state reps and many other role models in the community.
Some have well-known names and faces while others have broken through glass ceilings to make a better future for all St. Louisans. From US District Court Judge Clyde S. Cahill, First African American to graduate from SLU and President of St. Louis Board of Education Joyce Thomas to General Surgeon Homer G. Phillips Hospital and KMOV's Senior News Anchor Juluis K.Hunter, this book digs into the personal side of these influential St. Louisans who can motivate us all.
This book can help youth who can use another mentor, and even those of us who just want to be proud of our community. It should not take a holiday to pen great stories such as the ones collected in this book.
A Must Buy.......2000-06-20
I found this book particularly interesting because it features both pictures and stories on dozens of prominent St. Louisans, and how they relate to the history of the city. The very first feature is about my late uncle, Bennie G. Rodgers. Fortunately, he was able to be included in the book. In addition, there are many other people whom I either knew or knew of in St. Louis. The book not only covers civil rights advocates, but also educators, politicians, health care providers, entertainers, clergymen, media professionals, athletes, and others. Their stories serve as an inspiration on how perseverence worked for them.

If African Americans are, as some have proposed, a "nation within a nation," then the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is their anthem. Written in 1900 by the brilliant civil rights leader and author James Weldon Johnson and his brother J. Rosamond Johnson, it was the official song of the NAACP from the 1920s through the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s. During that time, it was sung by millions of black children and even printed in family bibles. This book, edited by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond and scholar Sondra Kathryn Wilson, celebrates the song through the testimonials of 100 prominent black and white legislators, politicians, educators, writers, and performers, whose "essays build a multifaceted narrative that elucidates the value and profundity of a song that has vibrantly endured for one hundred years."
Filmmaker Gordon Parks writes that the song "soars from the depths of our history," and that "it urges us to keep moving on until equality and freedom surround us with the oneness of the sky." For music icon Quincy Jones, the Johnson brothers "gave us this noble song to soothe our emotional wounds while, simultaneously, lifting our spirits." Ilyasah Shabazz, Malcolm X's daughter, says the composition "still serves as a reminder of our ancestors and our historical experiences in America." Testimonies from Norman Lear, Bill Clinton, Maya Angelou, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters add further proof of the power and passion of this song, which speaks to the highest ideals of American democracy. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
"A group of young men in Jacksonville, Florida, arranged to celebrate Lincoln's birthday in 1900. My brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, and I decided to write a song to be sung at the exercise. I wrote the words and he wrote the music. Our New York publisher, Edward B. Marks, made mimeographed copies for us and the song was taught to and sung by a chorus of five hundred colored school children.
"Shortly afterwards my brother and I moved from Jacksonville to New York, and the song passed out of our minds. But the school children of Jacksonville kept singing it, they went off to other schools and sang it, they became teachers and taught it to other children. Within twenty years it was being sung over the South and in some other parts of the country. Today, the song, popularly known as the Negro National Hymn, is quite generally used.
"The lines of this song repay me in elation, almost of exquisite anguish, whenever I hear them sung by Negro children."
—James Weldon Johnson, 1935
Pasted into Bibles, schoolbooks, and hearts, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," written by J. Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson in 1900, has become one of the most beloved songs in the African American community—taught for years in schools, churches, and civic organizations. Adopted by the NAACP as its official song in the 1920s and sung throughout the civil rights movement, it is still heard today at gatherings across America.
James Weldon Johnson's lyrics pay homage to a history of struggle but never waver from a sense of optimism for the future—"facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won." Its message of hope and strength has made "Lift Every Voice and Sing" a source of inspiration for generations.
In celebration of the song's centennial, Julian Bond and Sondra Kathryn Wilson have collected one hundred essays by artists, educators, politicians, and activists reflecting on their personal experiences with the song. Also featuring photos from historical archives, Lift Every Voice and Sing is a moving illustration of the African American experience in the past century.
With contributors including John Hope Franklin, Jesse Jackson, Maya Angelou, Norman Lear, Maxine Waters, and Percy Sutton, this volume is a personal tribute to the enduring power of an anthem. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" has touched the hearts of many who have heard it because its true aim, as Harry Belafonte explains, "isn't just to show life as it is but to show life as it should be."

A Song for All Americans.......2001-03-18
In 1900 James Weldon Johnson, and his brother J. Rosamond Johnson, wrote a song for a chorus of five hundred black school children, in Jacksonville, Florida, to sing in celebration of Lincoln's birthday. The song was originally published by mimeograph, and intended only for that year's remembrance of President Lincoln. Yet, the black school children of Jacksonville kept singing. ...and because the song reflected the truth of the black experience in America, the chorus swelled from five hundred to millions of voices. Today "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is alternately referred to as the "Black National Anthem"
Deeply patriotic, and clinging to a vision of an America healed of the scourge of racism, the brothers Johnson answered Francis Scott Key's anthem with realism, pathos, and hope. Whereas Key's song speaks of the external, military enemy, the Johnsons' chorus speaks of the more insidious internal enemy of racism. Whereas Key wrote of liberty already won and now demanding defense, the Johnsons wrote of liberty delayed, eventually promised, seen, but not yet fully acheived.
In this anthology, the editors give us an history of this deeply moving piece of music, and a chronology of its authors. They also give us one hundred short reponses to the song -- almost meditations -- by Americans of every skin hue. Finally, the text includes a pictoral display of the 20th century, American, black experience which is a treasure in and of itself.
This is more than a coffee table book. This is a book for all Americans to read and re-read: for in this text are planted the seeds of tolerance and understanding which our nation so desperately requires.
America's True Voice.......2000-12-19
Julian Bond and Sondra K. Wilson have blazed a trail in editing this book. Mostly well-known Americans, but also some hidden gems, share with the reader what the Johnson brothers' song means to them.
And it means a lot to a cross section of Americans. One friend noted that if you read the book in one setting, as she did, you get a clear sense of how African American families taught their children to be revolutionaries. These children were taught about their history, and they were given the tools to dream and do something about their future. They had no choice; they had to march on until victory was won! And they did, from shacks in Mississippi, middle-class homes in Chicago and upper-class environments in Hollywood (where they often still could not get a decent meal in a restaurant), they were taught to fight for their freedom. They marched on--on buses, at "white only" lunch counters, over bridges with dogs and police daring them to cross, down lonely country roads with the KKK looking on--and though hundreds of marches, they fulfilled the dreams of their ancestors.
One of the real treasures of the book, besides the wonderful essays, is that one gets the sense, through exquisite historical photos, of how broad the African American experience is and continues to be. There are poor black women chopping cotton, and black men being killed. But there are also photograpshs of young black women on horseback in the 1950s, muslim women at a mosque, photographs of Muhammad Ali, James Weldon Johnson and his wife looking lovingly at each other, proud black women on their way to church and young children all dressed up to perform in some special show for their parents. These photos give you a sense that despite the hardship, we might be making some progress--that the race is okay and might survive.
I would like to thank Bond and Wilson for sharing with us the best of our culture. As one NY Amsterdam News' reviewer noted, "If you breathe, you should buy this book." It is a perfect gift for any occasion.
A must have for every African -American family.......2000-12-10
I admit that I intended to purchased this book simply because my grandmother, Jeanne Belle Osby Goodwin is one of the featured 100 voices. But as I read through some of the other essays, the song and the thousands of voices that I have heard sing its choruses filled my heart and mind with such glory. This book became a must have book for my loved ones. "Sing a song full of the hope..." We are a people of many trials and tribulations. This song, and the written words of the 100 serve as potent reminders that we can,do and will persevere- to sweet victory!
Customer Reviews:
acceptable for its targeted audience.......2006-11-19
This book is for very young readers to learn about Mr. Weldon Johnson. The photos are huge and the text rather simple, as it should be for its audience. The work begins with the creation of "Lift Every Voice," rather than JWJ's birth. It contextualizes his life and activism by speaking of the Reconstruction and Jim Crow segregation. It mentions praiseworthy facts such as his becoming the first Black member of Florida's bar and writing two autobiographies. Grittier topics like his thinking he wasn't Black as a youth, his absence from his birth father and sister, and his possible bisexuality are not brought up. This book would be a good text for younger students who have to give speeches in class during Black History Month.

Book Description
Journey back fifty years to explore the decade of baby boomers, the Red scare, and the birth of rock and roll with Robert Rodriguez’s The 1950s’ Most Wanted: The Top 10 Book of Rock & Roll Rebels, Cold War Crises, and All-American Oddities. America was revving its engines when the fifties came along, and its citizens more than ready for everything the historic decade had to offer. Rodriguez takes you on a spin down memory lane with dozens of top-ten lists filled with amazing, amusing, and even astonishing trivia from the 1950s.
Television exploded into the mainstream in the 1950s, and in this book you’ll find kids’ television, shows that were immensely popular then but forgotten now, and potential series that never got off the ground. Film and music history are also well represented, with lists highlighting the fathers of rock and roll and some unlikely recording artists, plus catchphrases from contemporary films and first roles of future stars. Relive the most notorious crimes of the decade, such as the one that inspired the TV show and film The Fugitive, and its big scandals, such as the quiz show debacle and the deportation of Charlie Chaplin. You’ll read about politicians, celebrities, fashion, toys, fads, and disasters. Relearn the hip slang of the time while finding out which tales from the fifties were really tall tales or urban legends that are now debunked. Rodriguez gives you a whole decade’s worth of fun, facts, and all-important memories. It may have been half a century ago, but with The 1950s’ Most Wanted™, it’ll seem like just yesterday.
Customer Reviews:
What a fun read!.......2007-06-27
This book rocks! When I first picked it up in a book store (under "reference"), I didn't know what to think, what with the odd title. But as I started to flip through it, a bunch of things caught my attention.
This wasn't a book about old cars, which you might think from the cover. It covers the entire decade - just about any subject you can name: deaths, scandals, politics, movies, TV, books, fads, commercials, toys, and yes - even cars.
I didn't expect to be into the whole book, but once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. The writer comes off as both literate and irreverent. There is a definite tone throughout that seems to delight in deflating pomposity but then turns serious where appropriate.
This book is rich with detail; if there is any fault, perhaps it is in sometimes offering more than you want to know. But then, something for everyone, I guess.
For those who can't get enough, the author's website has even more articles. It's at www.fiftiesbook.com

Dawsons creek scrap book.......2007-04-15
Its cool if you like dawsons creek. Its about the cast and characters, their history and life, behind the scenes, best catchphrases and some scripts from the show.
The real thing, straight from the show, by its own admission.......2003-05-28
I made my way to the WB as a result of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so while I knew that "Dawson's Creek" was their teen soap opera but when a SNL skit made reference to Pacey I thought that was a different name for a girl. But when my students in Popular Culture begged to be able to write about this show for their television papers I started watching it (the gang was graduating from Capeside High in that episode). Last month when the show went into syndication and was available on DVD I was able to go back and watch the show all the way from the beginning and on through the grand finale (For the record, no, I was not surprised by who died or who Joey picked, not that I necessarily approved of either decision). In that context it is interesting to check out "Dawson's Creek: The Official Scrapbook" and relive the beginning once more.
The most interesting thing is that Kevin Williamson and the producers clearly thought that Michelle Williams as Jen, who had been an alien in "Species" and was about to co-star in "Dick" with Kirsten Dunst, was supposed to be the main female on the show. Of course, it ended up being Katie Holmes as Joey. Then there was the matter of Dawson's hair during that first season, which might not have made James Van Der Beek look five years young, but certainly made him look immature (although the book claims the look is supposed to be "poetic"). Then there are the "More than 80 photos!" promised on the cover, almost all of which are the four main heartthrobs in various combinations (but none of Joey and Pacey, oddly enough), and which easily convince me that Michelle Williams smiling and showing her teeth looks a lot better than smiling with just her lips (you have to pay attention to details like this to really appreciate a show).
The main thing is that this scrapbook is fan friendly. You get short bios of both the four characters and the actors playing them, shots of the locations where the show was filmed, shots of some of the favorite scenes, and the best lines from the first season (e.g., "I just think out emerging hormones are destined to alter our relationship and I'm trying to limit the fallout"). There is also a brief section on "Styles of the Stars" where we learn Pacey is "a D student with a Julius Caesar haircut" and a couple of pages of actual scripts from the show (that is "couple" as in two). The chief attraction remains the inside tidbits, as to who was creator Kevin Williamson's high school sweetheart that served as the model for Joey (Fanny Norwood), the name of Josh Jackson's Rhodesian Ridgeback (Shumba), and where they film the exterior scenes for Capeside High (University of North Carolina at Wilmington). So, what you end up with is not great, but certainly worthwhile at this price.
Good for the 'major' fans!.......2001-03-31
This is good for fans of dawsons creek. Its full of pictures, but most are from the first season. Its not got a story line or anything its, just something to look threw that you would do very quickly and probably never look at again. If you just love the show, your gonna want to get this, but i would recoment getting one of the Dawsons Creek novels instead because they are far more entertaining!
The low down on the lifes of the star's at Dawson's Creek!.......1999-06-11
This book is a must have of any Dawson's Creek fan! The book doesn't have a story line like any other Dawson's Creek book but describe the lifes of the 4 main characters in the Creek and in real life. By reading this book you find out about the star's past , present and future television and film jobs . The book gives you information about which star bring's his dog to work every day , what starsign they are and what there nick-names were ! You also find out about the characters in the creek which is a great help to those people who haven't seen Dawson's Creek and don't know the back grounds of all the characters. If this hasn't grasped you there is a piece by the producer Kevin Wialliamson with his thoughts and comments. The book also has a copy of some of the original T.V script with Kevin Williamson comments . My favourite part of the book is a page full of some of the most famous quotes ever in Dawson's Creek which reminds you of past events in the Creek. Over all I find this book a inspiring guide to the minds of 4 of the most confused teenagers which makes it a perfect guide to Dawson's Creek!
The book is a must have for fans........1998-10-13
The book is a must have even though the true fans probably already know all of this stuff. The book has the best quotes and tells about the characters and the actors. The only thing people don't probably know is about the changes in the piot script. Over all its a pretty good book.

Good book ... I think!.......2007-05-20
I think I was hoping for more of a casual read than a text book with a twist. As a writer, I find these kids of books interesting. This was no exception. It does help to further refine how we should be writing. Unfortunately, most people do not pay enough attention to how the speak or write. So, this book is a help in that regard.
I'm not sure why I don't feel it deserves 5 stars. Possibly because there are some parts in which the examples are rather confusing. The other is because the quality of the book - i.e., the paper it's printed on - makes it seem like a newspaper that you would read and toss.
Now, before all you "fans" get your panties into a wad, take into account that this is just my opinion. I suggest that if you want to purchase this book, use the "Look Inside" feature and make sure it's for you.
Some of these reviewers are snobs........2006-11-06
Some of these reviewers are snobs. I'm referring to the first review in this listing, which probably got high scores just because it is so long. Should we be surprised that a computer science professor doesn't like books that have a personal touch? Should we also be surprised that such a professor criticizes the author for not using Latex, the favorite of computer science people but probably nobody else?
The book is not perfect but for a college graduate looking to avoid a lot of writing landmines, this book is a fine thing and has a lot of practical advantages over such classics as Elements of Style.
I don't know if it's art, but I liked it!.......2005-06-24
I just recently finished a technical book and the book and Lyn's advice to be spot on. She flags the problems that I had with my writing style (or lack thereof).
Her style of writing is quirky, but entertaining. I enjoyed it immensely.
If I had bothered to read the book before I started righting my own book, I would have finished my book in much less time.
A cautionary note: this book is for TECHNICAL WRITERS. A book for the scientist who is writing, or the computer programmer who is writing. This book won't work for your novel about summers in Rome.
A good excercise in grammar.......2005-01-05
I particularly enjoyed the many examples Ms. Dupre provided with her topics. She did a good job making rules of grammar hit home. She also prompted you to actually THINK about the subject matter, rather than read the standard counterexamples found in most other grammar texts. For a student in a computer-related program with minimal english courses, this book does a great job in teaching good grammar with little pain.
However, the way the book is organized does make it hard to quickly find grammar rules. It's better used as a learning tool than a reference.
Author has ugly style.......2004-08-05
I already had ordered this book from Amazon, but I just cancelled it.
While I was checking my order I found style examples in the excerpt of the book which I strongly dislike and disagree.
One of the book's examples I saw is the following:
---------------
UGLY: In a stack, both insertions and deletions are performed at one end only; both poping and pushing are allowed.
GOOD: When you use a FIFO list queue, you make insertions, at one end of the list, and deletions at the other end; you therefore must maintain rear and front pointers.
---------------
First of all, after giving the UGLY statement, the author must show how to write a GOOD statement which expresses the same idea as the UGLY one. But, she does not. Instead, she writes a statement which expresses a different idea. So, how one knows the correct way of writting the original idea? Clearly, the example is useless.
Next, the statement she labels with GOOD has many unnecessary words, and, for my taste, is UGLY. I, instead, would write something like this:
"A queue is a list where insertions are made at one end, and deletions at the other end; therefore, to manage a queue, a front and a rear pointers are needed."
My statement is easier to understand than the author's supposedly GOOD statement, and does not have its unnecessary words.
I suspect that the author does not have science education nor is a writing style expert. Because if she were familiar with scientific writing, she would know that satetements should have the minimum number of words, and she would not insist in introducing the unnecessary and UGLY "when you use...", "you make...", "you insert..." etc. She must know that when a formal science or technical book or paper is talking about a concept X (like stacks, queues, memory, cpu, etc.), it has to talk about propiertes of X; IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO USES X.
The author, dogmaticaly and mecanically, tries to avoid every use of passive voice, getting wordy and ugly statements. She does not have elegant and imaginative means to convert from passive to active voice; she limits herself to use pronoun "you" as her "universal converter" ("When YOU use a FIFO list queue, YOU make insertions, at one end of the list, and deletions at the other end; YOU .... ").
Of course, most ideas are better expressed using active voice, but there are also many cases in which passive voice is more adecuate. (Please, do you find UGGLY this passive voice statement: "Most ideas are better expressed using active voice."?)
I use English as second language, mostly for reading. Nevertheless, I have checked many books and papers about writing style, and I always have found their examples instructive and better than what I would write. This is the first time I feel that the recommendations are worse than what I would write by myself.
There are at Amazon many other books about technical writing that have all the good things this book might have, but without those ugly examples thay might worsen your current style.
