The Jimi Hendrix legend has lived on longer than the man, who died in 1970 at the age of twenty-seven. More than thirty years later, what the world knows about him has become deeply distorted. Now Sharon Lawrence, a trusted friend of Jimi's in the final years of his astonishing life, has written a serious exploration of his life, death, and enduring legacy, based partly on the author's never-before-heard recorded interviews with the late musician.
Jimi Hendrix: The Man, The Magic, The Truth contains new and rare material about Hendrix, with major insights from sources who have previously kept their silence -- from childhood neighbors to rock stars and musicians, to music-industry insiders. This book corrects years of false information, reveals key truths, and supplies facts previously known to only a precious few. It also chronicles the years of mind-boggling legal battles over his estate and legacy.
This is the definitive account of Jimi Hendrix, the young man from a pathetic poverty-stricken childhood who invented himself into something rare and special, the man who radiated genius and a bold yet charming personality when he picked up a guitar. It revisits the glory of Hendrix's talent, giving new insight into his sensitive persona, imagination, musical standards, and far-reaching impact.
Iluminating, honest, and bracing,
Jimi Hendrix will forever change how we view one of rock and roll's greatest icons.

Another Jimi Book.......2007-10-03
Well I know she doesn't like Janie and a few things she said about Jimi's dad I personally didn't care for, but it's an interesting read.
30page bio in 300 page book.......2007-04-30
I totally agree with the former reviewer in the rough facts that he states. However, I regard this book as an incredibly valuable addition to the many books out there on my Hero.
The concept of "THE ULTIMATE BIOGRAPHY/ANALYSIS" is a flawed one: in my opinion if you wish to read further on any subject, you cannot gather your information from one book/source. And of COURSE the author must believe in what he/she writes.
The book is a great read. Indeed Jimi's youth is examined at length (but not as deeply as in Charles Cross' book) but then we go into wonderful new territory: that of someone who was There.
So, the 270 "extra" pages are indeed that: a great extra!
Of course there is no guarantee to the 100% accuracy of Sharon's memories (who has that?). Yet this book is a moving, insightful glimpse into the lonely world of the man who still reigns as the best thing that ever happened to the electric guitar, and a musical genius.
The last part, about the bickering between Jimi's "heirs", about how Noel Redding was MADE TO PAY for his copy of the Box Set of long lost tapes.... It certainly opened my eyes. Whereas I so far had thought with every purchase of a "new" Jimi CD: "Well I'll be supporting his family", now I know better...
I think this is a great book, and really enjoyed reading it.
Well Done Sharon.......2006-10-18
At last !...a book about Jimi by someone who knew him, cared about him and understood his music. I have been a Hendrix fan for many years and have read just about everything there is to read about Jimi and I still learned a few new things...but more importantly this isn't a book obsessed with nerdish facts and figures (and in fact sometimes the facts are slightly out)...but it is a book about Jimi and what he was all about-and shockingly about the horrific exploitation of the man during his life and particularly after he died.
I note that some other reviewers have criticised Sharon's view on Jimi's death, but from everything I have read, heard about and spoke to people (who know) about, I think she may be pretty close to the truth. It isn't true that Jimi was in 'good spirits' in the final weeks before his death (as one reviewer wrote)...you only have to read the late Tony Brown's detailed and well researched book on Jimi's final weeks to understand that Jimi was in poor health and his mental state was not good. This of course doesn't necessarily mean that he committed suicide, but I don't think Sharon actually says that he committed suicide...although I am pretty sure he took a large number of sleeping pills to 'escape' from all the hassles and pressures and the upcoming legal hassles with PPX (Chalpin) and a potential wrangling with Michael Jeffery over his future and management.
Sharon is also 100% correct about Monika Danneman who lied for many years about the fateful morning of 18.09.70. It does really appear that she failed to properly help/assist Jimi when he was dying (the large number of sleeping pills probably effectively disabled his coughing reflex and as he was probably lying on his back in bed he choked). If Danneman was awake, she could have laid Jimi on his side in a recovery position (she had lied over the years that she had accompanied Jimi in an ambulance and the ambulance men had failed to lie Jimi in a recovery position)...and there is the mystery of the large quantities of red wine which were all over Jimi and the bed (but there was very little alcohol in his bloodstream)..the inference being that the wine had been pured down his throat/over him as he was dying or after he had died. Given that it is assumed that only Danneman was in the flat with him that morning-she must have poured the wine down Jimi's throat. Why she did this we may never know, but as suggested in Sharon's book, maybe Danneman in some weird misguided way thought this might help clear Jimi's airways. It is unlikely that Danneman murdered Jimi, but she clearly didn't help him adequately and this may explain the nonsense that she spoke and published over the years. Tony Brown's book also confirmed (via interviews with ambulance men and police men) that Danneman was not at the flat when they arrived and Jimi's body was lying in a ghastly state on the bed alone. Danneman killed herself a few years ago when she was 'rumbled' by Cathy Etchingham and Tony Brown and apparently Sharon Lawrence....and I think the final straw was the law suit she lost to Etchingham. Danneman had I think been dating Uli Jon Roth (ex Scorpions guitarist and Hendrix devotee) for a number of years and Uli described her as one of the sweetest people he had ever met, so there is always another side of the story.....and whatever happened that morning it is still sad to see someone take their own life. Monika was of course not the only ex-girlfriend to apparently commit suicide...Devon Wilson jumped off the Chelsea Hotel in the early 70's...although the conspiracy theorists think she was pushed....most likely she was just stoned and depressed.
Anyway, the circumstances of Jimi's death is only a small part of Ms Lawrence's book, and although I enjoyed her accounts of the 60's and meetings with Jimi and the band, the best part of the book is her clear and perceptive account of what Jimi mean't to music and what music mean't to Jimi and his real legacy of influence and inspiration....rather than the tacky legacy of the various subsequent controllers of his legal musical legacy. I've always disliked the 'snakes' and cockroaches' who exploited Jimi in life and death and Sharon has managed in this book to name and shame most of them; starting with Chalpin and Curtis Knight and routing through Mike Jeffery, Branton, Douglas and most recently Janie 'Hendrix' and Bob Hendrix. She rightly identifies Jimi's allies in life and death and unfortunately this is not a story about the good guys triumphing-with Noel Redding dying relatively young and quite impoverished, Chas Chandler dying relatively young, and Leon Hendrix and a lot of the true blood family and relatives not recieving a penny after Al Hendrix died. The only bad guy to get his come uppance was Jeffery who died in a plane crash in 1973. Let's just hope that the horrific 'Janie' Hendrix and 'cousin' Bob eventually lose control of Experience Hendrix and the blood family get some benefits from Jimi's legacy. It is also time that Jimi's children are finally recognised - and although 'Little Swedish Jimi' has received a settlement, Tamara born to Diane Carpenter has not.
In summary a beautiful book that really gets to the heart of the truth about the Hendrix legend - buy it !
30 page biography in 300+ page book.......2006-08-14
30+ years after Jimi's death this author jumps to the head of the (very long) line of Hendrix biographers who claim to have the "true" story behind/about the man and the musician . . . and like so many previous biographies this one falls woefully short. What you will find in this book - an interesting narrative on Hendrix's childhood, a perspective on Hendrix's heroin possession trial in Canada, a brief chronology of The Experience's 1966-67 rise to stardom, a "theory" on his death and A LOT of the stereotypical tortured artist trapped in a web of managers, lawyers, promoters and hangers-on. What you won't find in this book - any serious discussion, analysis, description or even a glimpse of Hendrix's music - a fairly extraordinary feat for a Hendrix biography. Quotation marks are used very liberally throughout this book and I'll leave it to someone else to discuss/verify the authenticity of the remarks and sources - I'll simply say the "conversations" proved incredibly uninteresting to this reader - again somewhat remarkable when you consider the subject matter. The last section of the book concerns all the financial/legal issues concerning Hendrix's music since his death. As a long time fan I've "experienced" the re-issues, bootlegs, dub-overs etc.,(and long ago realized that these releases had more to do with money than with the music), and I guess I've been peripherally aware of the legal battles, but at this point in time as long as the Hendrix audio library stays available with an occasional addition here and there I'm happy, so the in-fighting chronicled here, (as pathetic and petty as it was/is), was of somewhat less interest to me... and also paints the author in a similar light. Unfortunately, as it was 40 years ago, Jimi has many admirers/fans but very few if any friends.
The one, the only, Jimi Hendrix........2006-04-11
This is a great read and for all the Jimi Hendrix P.H.D's out there, at least give this dear woman some credit for telling the truth and sharing her experience.
This book lets us peek into Jimi's soul a little closer and we can see how strong willed Jimi had to be to turn tragedy into triumph- the tragedy of a rough upbringing as well as a total uphill battle to play his music from the start of his career until the end. An amazing book about an amazing man.
Jimi Hendrix forever.

A comprehensive guide to writing screenplays by an experienced screenwriter and a respected writing teacher. Along with sections on the sreenwriter's craft, basic storytelling, and the parts and objectives of a screenplay, the book is distinguished by detailed analyses of sixteen successful films' screenplays, including the likes of E.T., Some Like It Hot, North by Northwest, Citizen Kane, and Annie Hall.
Book Description
In The Tools of Screenwriting, David Howard and Edward Mabley illuminate the essential elements of cinematic storytelling, and reveal the central principles that all good screenplays share. The authors address questions of dramatic structure, plot, dialogue, character development, setting, imagery, and other crucial topics as they apply to the special art of filmmaking.Howard and Mabley also demonstrate how, on a practical level, the tools of screenwriting work in sixteen notable films, including Citizen Cane, E.T., One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rashomon, The Godfather, North by Northwest, Chinatown, and sex, lies, and videotape.

Verbose but thoughtful advice.......2007-01-10
Nothing new here and it is wordy. You should read it carefully, underliner in hand, to mark fishing grounds worth remembering.
Good if you've never written anything ever before.......2006-05-10
If you have never written anything, in any genre, in any format, then this book would be an excellent tool to help develop your writing skills. However, as a book on screenwriting, this book gives the very basic of basics. That is, to sum up 97 pages of text, you need to have characters, a plot, conflict, a resolution. Oh, yeah, and it all has to make sense.
Each concept is "delved" into in about two to three pages. Most of this, however, is just primer to the Analysis Section in the back of the book, where the writer now explains how all those elements take place in various movies he considers Good.
Not a great book.
Comprehensive and Practical.......2004-09-29
I think this book stands out from others in the heap of books on screenwriting in at least two salient aspects.
First, it does a fairly good job of defining the terms being used. There is great confusion in screenwriting terminology; different authors have differing definitions for commonly used terms -- or none at all. They just throw out terms as if the reader already knows what it means or the meaning is so intuitively obvious it doesn't need definition. Or they define the term vaguely and apply it inconsistently so it seems to mean one thing in one paragraph, and then something else in another. Terms do need clarification and authors need to be consistent.
Second, whereas some authors emphasize a particular element or technique as a sin qua non -- if not the sin qua non for creating a marketable manuscript -- this book discusses all the basics with no particular emphasis or preference for one.
After surveying the basics, the authors apply their analytical schema to 14 notable films from various genres including The GodFather, Rashomon, Annie Hall, sex lies and videotape and Hamlet. Though I don't always agree as to how they apply their schema, it's a practical schema.
An indispensable Tool........2001-12-14
I can't praise enough this book. The First section explain the Basic about Storytelling, the Second section expose The Screenwriting Tools, the Third Section from the page 100 to the end provide an Analyses of 16 Films using the following tools/elements:
Protagonist and Objective, Conflict, Obstacles, Premise and Opening, Main tension, Culmination and Resolution, Theme, Unity, Exposition, Characterization, Development of the History, Dramatic Irony, Preparation and Aftermath, Planting and Payoff, Plausibility, Action and Activity, Dialogue, Visuals, Dramatic Scenes.
My conclusions:
1) The information is clear and concise explaining the essential elements of a script
2) The Analyses Section provides examples in depth
3) The book is cheap
Is a favorite between my 12 books about Writing, you can't go wrong with this bok even if you are a Pro because the analyses of the films provide you a comparative of the central principles of a good movie.
Masterful! Brilliant! Amazing!.......1999-07-22
Forget all of the other books out there...or, buy the other books, but make this one first on your list. Howard and Mabley are both accomplished professional writers and they know their tools of the craft, which they now share with you. This book succeeds immensely simply because it lists the elements of a screenplay and tells how each is best used and why. It has all of the basic elements: Dialogue, Dramatic Irony, etc. But ever heard of "Preparation and Aftermath", "Future and Advertising", "Planting and Payoff", or "Plausibility"? If not, then learn how to include them in YOUR screenplay to make it better, more exciting, and more fulfilling in a dramatic and universal way. Absolutely the best book on screenwriting. Period. Buy it now. I have read it a countless number of times and each time I learn something new or it spurs my imagination to create something new in the world of my screenplay. Please do yourself a favor and get a hold of this book. A masterpiece of screenplay instruction.

Terrific update to excellent security guide!.......2005-07-16
I have previously done a review of the First Edition of the Microsoft Windows Security Resource Kit which I was very impressed with. All what I said for that book still applies. The first book applied to Windows 2000 and XP Pro. Since then there has been a major upgrade for XP in SP2 and the introduction of Windows 2003 which the Second Edition covers. As with the first book this edition is great for anyone that wants to learn how to secure their Windows 2000/2003/XP Pro operating systems/networks and is geared mostly to administrator types though anyone with such interest including power users will find it extremely helpful.
In just under 700 pages no book can be all inclusive about Windows security. The Windows Security Resource Kit goes into detail on many commonly implemented topics like password/account policy and on others it shows you the basics of what is possible and then refers you to online documantation/white papers if you are interested in a full implementaion which keeps the book affordable, readable, and under 10,000 pages. For example there is a full chapter 25 with detailed instruction on how to implement 802.1X security for wired and wireless networks. For Software Restriction Policies there are three pages but that is enough to make a user aware of what SRP is, how it can help you prevent users from installing and running unathorized applications, and the basics of how to implement it. As a MCSE in Windows 2003:Security and a common newsgroup participant I am often amazed at the number of admnistrators that are not aware of many the security features of Windows 2000/2003/XP Pro such as SRP or in particular ipsec. They would benefit tremendously from this book.
The two chapters on privacy were dropped and more room is devoted to W2003/XP Pro. Though a lot of the content is the same as the previous version much as been revised or added. Below are some that I considered of note though my list is not all inclusive of changes.
CH3. A much better table with descriptions of well known sids.
CH8. Using EFS with Webdav to keep files encrypted on the network and sharing of EFS files.
CH9. Full list AND description of all services for Windows 2000/2003/XP Pro.
CH10. Windows firewall including how to configure for scope and exceptions, using Group Policy or scripted intstallations using netfw.inf. Improvements for ipsec in Windows 2003 including default exemption handling.
CH.11 Group Policy for wireless networks and Software Restriction Policies.
CH.12 Interet Explore securtiy and pop up blocker.
CH.15 One of my favorite chapters on auditing. Includes tables with listing of more Event ID's for object access and policy change.
CH.17 Listed specific service recommendations for domain controllers for both Windows 2000/2003 and also listed a recommended ipsec filter for securing a domain controller.
CH.19 Much is changed in 2003 Terminal Servies. - Use of Software Restriction Policies, smart card logon, and SSL for TS with SP1.
CH.22 For RRAS a big change is the cability of remote access quarantine control. A step by step is given with a link to sample scripts to use or modify.
CH.23 Implementation of role separation for certificate authorities.
CH.24 IIS 6.0 is disussed with it's security capabilities such as default install state, Automatic Health Monitoring, and the all important Application Isolation.
Ch.25 A whole step by step chapter on 802.1X for wired and wireless networks including Remote Access Policies, IAS, and deploying user and computer certificates. 802.1X can greatly increase security of WEP by using dynamic wep and forcing key renewal if you still have to use WEP.
CH.27 Briefy discusses Windows Update Services and its advantages.
CH.29 How to install and use the Windows 2003 SP1 Security Configuration Wizard to help select a computer profile for "hardening" to disable uneeded servces, configure audit policy, and use ipsec filters to block uneeded ports! In my opinion this is a tremendous tool that also has a rollback capability. New features of netstat are shown [note that netstat -b can be used to show executeable to port use though not covered in the book]. Two extremely helpful new tools - portquery and port reporter.
CH.31 Great table on using built in and third party tools to capture state of the computer for incident response investigation. I am surprised however that msinfo32 was not mentioned as you can use it to generate a very useful report to a .nfo file.
There is much discussion throughout the book on use of ipsec to protect your network with either ESP/AH encryption/integrity or the use of an ipsec "filter" policy to manage access to computer ports. Included are examples of ipsec filters for domain controller, wins, and DHCP. As much as I like the book I disagree with the recommendation on pages 375-376 on implementing ipsec for the domain by implementing a client/respond policy for the domain and then a server require ipsec policy for the domain controller container. Refer to KB254949 for more details and be sure to throughly test and ipsec policies on a test domain before implementing. Poorly planned ipsec implementation can cause havoc on a domain. I highly recommend that you read the white paper on Improving Security with Domain Isolation to see ipsec can do to protect your domain with the proper ipsec policies.
All in all I still believe that the Microsoft Windows Security Resource Book is a top notch book for anyone to own who wants to learn how to maximize security on their computer or network within their risk manangement paramaters. The changes in Windows XP Pro SP2 and more so Windows 2003 are very significant. If you already own the First Edtition but have upgraded to Windows 2003 or want to learn more about how Windows 2003 can improve your security then this book is for you.

A reluctant 3 stars (2 1/2 perhaps more appropriate).......2006-07-15
I used the book as a reference for MCSE. But, now that I'm really going through and reading it more thoroughly I'm surprised that it was rated 5 stars at the time I bought and still is.
Although there is a lot of useful information in it one strike against it is that it's written in a manner that is not easy to read. I could include one of many example paragraphs that would just blur your eyes and make your head spin, even after reading it multiple times. But, I'm not going to take the time or space in this review.
Also there are too many instances in which the authors don't finish the point. For instance (just one of many examples) when they discuss configuring LM compatibility. They provide a nice list of possible settings, tell you that you set these in Group Policy and then don't finish by telling you where or how you make these settings in Group Policy. So you're left having to go to another source to finish the answer. Once you've done that a few times you quick reading this book and use the other source instead. I've trained on software myself for many years and I consider that laziness, on the authors part.
I won't deny that there's valuable information in the book. That's why I opted for 3 stars. But, there's also enough shortcomings that it's not a 4 and certainly not a 5 star book.
Very helpful.......2005-03-14
If you are going to do anything w/ MSFT security in XP, 2000 or NT, you must use this book, there is a lot of helpful info in it.
An overly wordy reference with lots of hidden gems.......2004-01-28
I've read nearly a dozen security related books now, including a lot from the Hacking Exposed team. This doesn't compare. There's no flare, there's no personality, it's a reference text.
It reads like a text book, infact, 90% of what's in it is probably in the standard MS texts, manuals and online. So while it's great they've brought all this info together in one place, they might have been better to wrap explination around references, rather than repeating information verbose.
There are lots of gems hidden away, like a detailed description of how kerberos and the token issueing processes work. But sometimes it really falls short, like when listing security related event IDs, it only lists the "more common" ones and there's no reference to locate the rest.
I read this cover to cover, which I think was a mistake, it's probably better as a reference, where if you've got a task to perform, you skim the relevant sections.
Your milage may vary.
Can I get another star?.......2003-10-27
This is easily the best technical book I have ever read. Simply excellent. You will not regret buying nor reading this one!
Great security info and not just for administrators.......2003-08-13
The Windows Security Resource Kit is a wonderful wealth of information on securing Windows networks and operating systems. It is useful for anyone above the beginner level. It concentrates on using features of primarily Windows 2000 and XP to maximize security for various levels of needs. It is not about building a bastion host or configuring firewalls.
It is not a "cookbook" like too many training manuals are these days and is not full of fluff - it covers a lot of territory in it's 680 pages and is not geared for technogeeks, but is clearly written and understandable to the average Joe and Jane [except page 349]. The first two chapters put you in the security "mindset" - Key Principles of Security [including the Ten Immutable Laws of Security] and Understanding Your Enemy. I think that is very important, because security needs to be approached from an attitude about what you are up against and how only one vulnerability can sink your boat.
The next twenty three chapters are logically divided into security topics that can later be accessed easily as needed for reference purposes. Each chapter ends with best pratices recap and references to other books or Knowledge Base articles.
I thought the "meat" of the book was thorough, interesting, and accurate. Finally I have one place to go for an explaination of what ALL the user rights, security options, and services are. There is an excellent chapter on securing tcp/ip with specific recommendations on registry modifications to defend against a denial of service attack and even a .vbs script on the cdrom to implement them all. An equally excellent chapter on auditing including comprehensive tables explaining Event Ids and Event ID 681 failure codes. I finally know what the difference is between auditing account log on and log on events. Chapter 10 goes into great detail about ALL of the various settings in the Web Content Zones for Internet Explorer and how to configure them for your needs. Cookie/Privacy settings are also explained in detail. Chapter 7 includes specific recommendations on ntfs security settings for every folder in a new installation and a security template to implement them. I was impressed with Chapter 21 in that it shows you how to secure an IIS 5.0 server without having to be an IIS expert. Chapters 22 and 23 nicely explain patch management, Windows Update, using Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer tool, and using SUS for patch management on a large scale basis. The chapter on remote access and vpn explains the differences in pptp and l2tp and when to use each. Other chapters cover securing Terminal Services, authentication - various settings for Lan Manager authentication level, managing security templates/Security Configuration and Analysis tool, wireless networking/WEP, EFS [ten pages of crucial info], ipsec, Certificate Services, Group Policy, Active Directory [I now know how to use dsacls to reset object permissions to default], securing laptops [very informative], permissions, account/password policies, and managing users. Chapter 24 covers using security assessment tools including how to port scan and a extensive chart of common Windows ports and what applications use them.
Part VI of the book breaks away from Windows specific configurations and is called Planning and Performing Security Assessments and Incident Responses. It discusses vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, and security audits. This part is also extremely informative to those of us who are not trained in what to do after an incident - what to do when an intrusion is detected, who to inform , and most importantly how to preserve data in the event of criminal prosecution or to reconstruct the attack. The last chapter goes into privacy issues that one needs to know as how far can one go in gathering information from a legal standpoint.
Windows Security Resource kit is a very valuable resource in my opinion to anyone interested in securing a Windows computer or network. The writing style is very understandable and you do not have to read the whole book for it to make sense if only certain topics are of interest. It does not however go into too much detail on importance of virus/trojan protection or perimiter/firewall security but there are whole other books written on those topics. The included cdrom has many tools from the Resource Kit and the book itself. I also highly recommend it to anyone studying for their MCSE and consider it a "must have" for anyone planning to take any of the MCSE security exams or pursue the MCSE Security certification. Kudos to Microsoft Press for this one.
