Book Description

The iPod is the world's bestselling music player. But if you think that it's just a music player, then you must think Clark Kent is just a newspaperman. In this freshly updated edition, New York Times tech columnist J. D. Biersdorfer blows open the secret doors of this gleaming, chrome-and-white beauty. With humor and authority, she lays bare an astonishing collection of useful tips, tricks, and shortcuts like these: iPod as PalmPilot. The iPod can suck in your calendar, address book, to-do list, and notes from a Mac or PC, and then display them at the touch of a button. It also doubles as an alarm clock and stopwatch. iPod as hard drive. You can use your iPod to carry gigantic files from place to place. iPod as e-book. The iPod makes an excellent book reader, capable of scrolling through recipes, driving directions, and even Web pages. iPod as GameBoy. The iPod's games are perfect time-killers for waiting rooms, bus rides, and the Department of Motor Vehicles. iPod & iTunes: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition is much more than it seems, too. It not only covers all iPod models for both Mac and Windows, including the iPod Mini, it's also the ultimate guide to the iTunes software, MusicMatch Jukebox, and the new iTunes Music Store for both Mac and Windows. No matter what kind of music moves you, iPod & iTunes: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition will help you get much more out of your iPod--and much more into it.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-06-21

Are you getting the most out of your iPod? If you're not, then this book is for you. Author J D Biersdorfer, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that has easy to follow graphics, crystal-clear explanations, and guidance of the most useful things your iPod can do.

Biersdorfer, begins by showing you what lies underneath all of the menus on your iPod or iPod Nanao and what each item does. Then, the author focuses on introducing you to iTunes most basic and useful tools. Next, she shows you how to make playlists of songs you've added to iTunes. She also looks at how much you will spend in the iTunes store. The author then spotlights the video side of iTunes. Then, she shows you even more ways to use your iPod. The author continues by explaining the simple procedures for playing your iPod songs through the woofers and tweeters in your life. Then, she explains what to do if your iPod's acting weird. Finally, the author kicks it up a notch and gives you some ideas of what else you can do with iTunes and the iPod besides just watching and listening.

In this most excellent book, you'll learn how to install iTunes. Perhaps more importantly, this book will show you everything from turning your iPod on, to charging your iPod without a computer.

2 out of 5 stars I won't throw it away, but ..........2005-02-10

I bought this book at the same time that I bought my iPod. I was taken in by the "Missing Manual" part, hoping that the book would give some basic information on how to use the iPod and the related software. It does no such thing.

To illustrate my frustration with this book, let me relate a couple of exeriences.

The iPod idea is not really meant for classical music, since classical music pieces are not organized around "songs." I happen to be interested in classical music, and, with time, I have been able to work around the iPod's limitations and make it serviceable for Beethoven, Bach, and the rest. But this book was of NO help in this. Instead, it tells the reader that if he is a classical music buff, he will just have to suffer for his art.

Keeping in mind my first lessons in computing, back in the 1980's, I know that the three basic laws of all computing are backup, backup, and backup. When you work with an iPod, backup is even more important than for ordinary computing. This book is of very little help with that. Again, I had to learn by myself, without much help from this book.

On the other hand, there are things in this book that are interesting. The way to use this book is not as a source of answers to questions you have (that would really be a manual), but as a source of ideas and facts that you never knew were there. So I won't throw it out in disgust; I'll read in it from time to time. I have gained some insights from it and will no doubt do so in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Lives Up to Its Name.......2005-01-12

Lucky enough to get a 20 Gigabyte 4G iPod, I wanted to know how to do everything on it as quickly as possible. While I had used iTunes before getting this iPod, I found this book useful and very readable to discover how to use my iPod for more than playing tunes. I appreciate all the shareware and freeware mentioned in the book is on the book publisher's website. Most are fairly small downloads that won't take too long even on a dial-up connection.
Yes, the information is dated as this book gets to be a year old now, but still it is a useful reference book and hopefully a newer edition will be out later this year. I found many websites to supplement I do admit I just borrowed this book from the library, so my expectations are lower than someone who forked out money to get it. I picked up Guy Hart-Davis's "How to Do Everything With Your iPod & Ipod mini second edition" and while it does cover some things the missing manual doesn't, it is less readable and even more out of date, not to mention a condescending lecture on stealing music. So look through this book and consider waiting for a new edition and/or try out some online resources.

2 out of 5 stars Lightweight, too lightweight........2004-10-15

Many of the missing manual books are excellent, but this one, in my opinion, falls sadly short. Surely people who are interested in a technical insight to a technical device want useful details, rather than reiteration of the obvious and endless "soggy' jokes.
The book isn't without some merit, and I would recommend borrowing it from a library or a friend so you can flip through it. But, I would wait before buying it in the hope the author updates it and puts more "meat" into the text.

1 out of 5 stars Fooled again..........2004-10-11

Because we bought an iPod mini recently, I thought it would be smart to get some insider's information how to make use of all its features. So I first checked some magazines, but they were kind of expensive. For just a little more, I might as well buy a complete book, I reasoned. But then I checked some often mentioned ipod related web sites. I already found some interesting information there, but I still found them not as complete as I had expected. So I checked Amazon to see if there were some good books. After reading reviews of different books, I had the impression that "iPod & iTunes: Missing Manual" was not just a good and complete book about the iPod. It was probably also the best around.

But when the book was delivered and I started reading it, I immediately noticed that I had stepped into that trap again: there are no good manuals for frequently updated hardware and software...

I should have sticked with trying things out by myself, perhaps checking some of the web sites once in a while.

Having read the book, I should say it's outdated (why bother about the old MusicMatch software for Windows?) and very superficial. I would have expected many more smart tricks (like how to create smart playlists). Overall, I think at most 10% of the book has some value. But to call this book a manual or reference is way too much honor for it.

I almost did not find any really surprising insights in this book. If you're not too stupid to be able to try out the iTunes software for yourself (going through all its (sub)menus once to see what it does), you don't need this book at all.

Anyway, this book proved to me (once again) that one should never buy books like these, unless it's your hobby to support their authors/publishers.

Book Description

No one expressed the heart and soul of the Sixties as powerfully as the Beatles did through the words, images, and rhythms of their music. In Magic Circles Devin McKinney uncovers the secret history of a generation and a pivotal moment in twentieth-century culture. He reveals how the Beatles enacted the dream life of their time and shows how they embodied a kaleidoscope of desire and anguish for all who listened--hippies or reactionaries, teenage fans or harried parents, Bob Dylan or Charles Manson. The reader who dares to re-enter the vortex that was the Sixties will appreciate, perhaps for the first time, much of what lay beneath the social trauma of the day.

Delving into concerts and interviews, films and music, outtakes and bootlegs, Devin McKinney brings to bear the insights of history, aesthetics, sociology, psychology, and mythology to account for the depth and resonance of the Beatles' impact. His book is also a uniquely multifaceted appreciation of the group's artistic achievement, exploring their music as both timeless expression and visceral response to their historical moment. Starting in the cellars of Liverpool and Hamburg, and continuing through the triumph of Beatlemania, the groundbreaking studio albums, and the last brutal, sorrowful thrust of the White Album, Magic Circles captures both the dream and the reality of four extraordinary musicians and their substance as artists. At once an entrancing narrative and an analytical montage, the book follows the drama, comedy, mystery, irony, and curious off-ramps of investigation and inquiry that contributed to one of the most amazing odysseys in pop culture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly Literate.......2007-09-22

This isn't yet another "history" about the Beatles, and is, instead, one of the finest books I've read in a very long time regardless of subject matter. Admittedly, at times the text is dense as Beatle lore is contrasted with events of the decade ... but well worth the extra effort to fully engage into what the author is trying to present (i.e. that without John, Paul, George and Ringo, the sixties would have been very different ... very different indeed). The last section, about how his own life intertwines with his subjects is rich in reflection, and will stay with you long after the book is closed.

4 out of 5 stars A Bold Synthesis of Beatledom.......2007-06-09

This is the kind of book I've been wanting to write about the Beatles, but never had the time. Rather than a dull hagiography of all their stories and songs, this is an intelligent synthesis of what the Beatles meant and what they still mean today and will continue to mean down the generations. Not that I agree with everything the author has to say. He takes many interpretive risks, some of which pan out and others that remain...well, speculative. You might not agree with the author that the White Album is their best, or that "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is the key to understanding that album (or that it's about copulation--my own take is that it's a song about heroin addiction), but for him to state that so unequivocally shows an interpretive gusto.

Two things make this a great read. First is the historical contextualization. While amateurish in some respects (obviously the author isn't a professional historian), this book is a bold attempt to integrate the Beatles phenom with the zeitgeist of the age in which they arose, flourished, and died. Second, the author delves into the dreamworld that the Beatles created through their music, their films, their concert tours, and their public image.

Anybody who grew up listening to the Beatles from a young age will likely find resonances in this book with their own experiences. For those of us whose youth was infested with Beatledreams and Beatlenightmares (imagine seeing Yellow Submarine at the age of 4), this book is on the right track.

Not that the definitive interpretation of the Beatles has been written. Not by a long shot. Like all great art, people will be struggling to interpret their songs and their legacy for years to come. Many of the author's insights must be taken with a grain of salt and an ironic sense of humor (such as the notion that they arose from a toilet, metaphorically speaking), but in his bold and stylized analysis, McKinney points us in the right direction for future Beatlemusings.

5 out of 5 stars Like Dreamers Do.......2006-07-20

I was born in 1973, discovered "Beatles" in 1982--there is a vast, yawning ache in me everyday that Devin feels too. It's what drove him to write this book. The Beatles and Stones (et al) in their time stood as avatars--their time was one of purpose, all framed within a purpose-giving context. Devin takes great pains to show that the Beatles were of their context--their context created them--the "push and pull" of their fans creating them as they created their fans-- as these reservoir pups cut their teeth on the very culture they were shaping.

And now back to the vast yawning ache. That dynamic has passed forever. Our country is now a circus show, a joke, and we are so sedate on technology we are o-blitherous to it. (Irony: Beatles were the most concentrated example of media influence on a mass culture of the past century) -- But at least what came to us through that technology used to MEAN something, now it's used to sell a new credit card plan. Just consider this example--we are so obviously being raped by our leaders today, so much MORESO than in the 60's, and what do you see happening about it? Are there rallies in the streets, mass movements, standard bearing screamers at the helm like the Beatles? HERE is the essence of why Devin had to write this book--the ache we feel is that we weren't there, -- I mean, we can't HELP but look back at that temerity and believe it was a far more enlightened time than NOW. There could NEVER be any phenomenon REMOTELY akin to the Beatles again, based on the complete lack of CONTEXT that would be needed to feed both need and deed.

So to us it really DOES feel like a dream-- like we woke up at the very end in fact, and JUST MISSED the real, shall we say, meat of the thing. And hoo boy, what foul dust floats in the wake of that dream.

4 out of 5 stars climbinthebackwithyourheadinthecloudsareyou'regone.......2005-07-18

McKinney deftly -- and fearlessly -- punctures holes (enough of them to fill the Albert Hall) in the bloated blimp of Celebrity, then digs through the pockets of the Crabalocker fishwives and pornographic priestesses that litter the crash site. There were no survivors -- except Paul, of course. Goo goo g'joob!

5 out of 5 stars Bubble and Read.......2005-02-07

I loved this book. My favorite Book on The Beatles. It is of high courage to intermingle the stories of the Paul-Is-dead Rumor and the Charles Manson tragedy in the way that Mr. McKinney did. At first it repulsed, and after asking myself why ? i realized that i rejected because it touches the nerve of truth. But the irony is that in mixing The Beatles and Manson in the way that he did, he succeded in separating them. In the U2 movie Rattle and Hum, Bono introduces their version of Helter Skelter by saying: "this is a song Chrales Manson stole from the Beatles, we are stilling it back". If U2 succeded in stilling it back, Mr. McKinney built a wall around it and protected it from future potential stealings. The rest of the book is great too. Congratulations.

    Book Description

Richard "The Iceman Kuklinski" led a double life beyond anything ever seen on The Sopranos, becoming one of the most notorious professional assassins in American history while hosting neighborhood barbecues in suburban New Jersey. Now, after 240 hours of face-to-face interviews with Kuklinski and his wife and daughters, author Philip Carlo tells his extraordianry story. Kuklinski was Sammy "The Bull" Gravano's partner in the killing of Paul Castellano at Spark's Steakhouse. John Gotti hired him to kill the neighbor who accidentally ran over his child. For an additional price, he would make victims suffer; he conducted this sadistic business with cold-hearted intensity, never disappointing his customers. By his own estimate, he killed over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique. Kuklinski's story, once known, captivated the public and became the subject of three HBO documentaries about which the New York Times raved "Few viewers are ever likely to forget this thoroughly chilling portrait. As for possible movie competition, it would work on the level of The Silence of the Lambs." The Ice Man is the most complete portrait of a killer since Peter Maas' New York Times bestselling biography of Sammy the Bull, Underboss, or Gay Talese's Honor Thy Father.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-10-01

I recently finished this book and found it to be incredibly insightful, thought provoking and extremely gruesome - but I loved it!!
I think Mr. Carlo touched every aspect of Richard Kuklinski's life that you may have been wondering about - from his childhood, parents, wife, kids, etc. It's so unfortunate that all those people had to die, the families lives that were ruined (not to mention his own family), and the horrible beatings Richard had to endure - but this book did an excellent job portraying it all.
I couldn't put this book down. I have since lent it to a friend who can't put it down either.
Mr. Carlo deserves every 5 star review that's given!

2 out of 5 stars Very little Credibility.......2007-09-30

I bought "The Ice Man" because I had viewed the HBO documentary, which was terrifying. I read this book once and gave it away. According to Richard Kuklinski, hardly a major killing took place in the U.S. during the 1970s and 1980s without his involvement. Among his incredible assertions are that he participated in the murders of Carmine Galante, Paul Castellano, and even Jimmy Hoffa. Had he been somewhat older, it wouldn't have surprised me had he stated that it was he, and not John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Lincoln. Since it's been some time since I've read this tome, my recollection of many of his allegations are somewhat hazy, but I do remember questioning many of them. Philip Carlo's writing is flawless and gripping, but Kuklinski's credibility, in my opinion, is somewhat debatable.

5 out of 5 stars The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer .......2007-09-22

I saw a documentary on televison about this man so I was intrigued and bought the book. The book is excellent, but sad. It is a riveting story of so many lives lost. Excellent reading.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling and compelling .......2007-08-31

"The Ice Man" is, by far, one of the most compelling, perfectly-written, biographical accounts I've ever read. Philip Carlo masterfully conveyed the most graphic details of Richard Kuklinski's criminal activities without repelling his audience -- an incredible feat given the unnerving subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars excellent true crime read.......2007-08-30

This is a book that once you pick it up you can't put it down and you definitely do feel a pressure to talk to someone about it. It is so gruesome you have to have to be careful who you choose to talk to about it. I am a psychotherapist and from a psychological point of view it was facinating. Carlo was able to show the different facets of the man, a true sadistic psychopath. On the other hand he had some kind of "code" or sense of empathy with the children he rescued from sexual abuse. It is as if he could identify with them, something that psychopaths are believed to be unable to do not having a conscience. It seems that there was a small part of him somewhere that cared about those children. And he cared about his family, even though he also terrified and abused them. He said he would not kill a woman unless she was also a hit "person". But his cruelty to men had no bounds. He was not into sexual assaults which maybe is the reason he is not as well known as Ted Bundy and Jeffery Dahmer. He should be the most notorious of all serial killers. I agree he was the worst of the serial killers and it surprised me he is not the most well known. Carlo did a great job.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-07-16

I still have my autographed copy of Contract Killer after 12 years, good thing since it's turned into quite a rarity. I've contemplated the story of Donald "Tony the Greek" Frankos for quite some time. Personally, I think this book is fascinating, a blunt, gritty narrative of mob and prison life. The Greek got around quite a bit back in the day and knew just about everyone in the New York underworld during the 60's and 70's. The main selling point of this book is obviously Frankos's alleged involvment in the murder of Jimmy Hoffa. However, after 30 years, quite a few people have now claimed to have killed the Teamster leader. So whose telling the truth? Hard to tell, we'll probably never know for sure.

I docked a star for some factual inconsistencies I've discovered. Frankos claims that John Sullivan asked him to hit Jimmy Coonan when he got out of prison in August 1981. Later that day, The Greek claims he and Joe Sullivan met up with Coonan at a Hell's Kitchen bar. Only trouble here, Coonan was locked up in Federal prison at this time. Also, Frankos identifies Fat Tony Salerno at the boss of the Genovese family, when by now it was clear that Vincent "The Chin" Gigante was in fact the boss. How much of the Greek's story is untrue? I personally think most of it is generally accurate but also embroidered. If the reader keeps this in mind the book is quite enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of a few mob books ever written.......2005-04-11

Of the hundreds of mob books ever written, this one does stand out. Are the stories true? I don't know but they do sound plausible. It's told in first person by Frankos and he mentions a lot of "the names." He tells stories of mobsters written in other books, that will make you want to go back and re-read them just to see how they fare.

If you can find it, get it, it's a great read. Start your "mob book" collection with Contract Killer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read but is it truth or fiction.......2005-02-05

Excellent account of what happened to Jimmy Hoffa but how many books out there or stories are going around claiming the same thing? I guess we will never know but this is a very interesting version nonetheless and thats just 1 small part of the book. This guy talks about hit jobs like he talks about taking the dog for a walk. Its a piece of cake for him. Its hard to go into everything in a review but if you dig mob books you will dig this one. Its a really easy read and its pretty decent sized and it holds your interest!

2 out of 5 stars Not Bad but is it true?.......2004-01-15

It's not a bad book but I wonder how much of what he says he did is actually true. If you red alot of mafia books, like me, You don't find many new stories except Jimmy Hoffa. He says he was there but I could say the same thing. There is no one to back him up except Jimmy Coonan, and I doubt he will. As long as you read this with a large grain of salt in mind, it's entertaining. New versions of old stories. If you want read a real book about the mob, read "Murder Machine" by Jerry Capeci and Gene Mustain. It's the best of all of them.

    4 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Story.......2002-04-16

This book is about the life of a confessed mob hit man. Some times books like this make me question if the author is not adding a little to make sure the buzz is there it sell the book. If this guy really did the damage he claims and for the reasons stated then why did not one of his "family" friends not put a hit out on him? And while we are talking, how many people have claimed to have been part of the Hoffa killing? So many they evidently needed to pick Hoffa up in a school bus to fit all the killers in.

Don't get me wrong; this is a very entertaining book, with just an armload of tabloid type details about the mafia and a lot of interesting stuff on the government and the witness protection program. The book is a very interesting jump into the world of the Mafia and you will remember of lot of the story for a good while after you have finished it.

Bob Miller, The Business of Assassination (Booksurge, 2006)

The Business of Assassination is something of a misnomer as a title for this book. Miller's political screed (bounced off narrator Nan Kilar, a freelance journalist associated with Miller's website, and who is more than willing to throw in opinions of her own on a fairly regular basis) only extends for about the first third of this small (170pp.) volume. The rest is comprised of what, in the music world, we'd call a sampler: excerpts of three of Miller's previous books (Taciturn, My Friend Zabar, and Toto Coelo). The first of them does have a bit to do with the subject matter outlined in the title, as it's an excerpt from a novel of Miller's (semiautobiographical, Kilar tells us) that dabbles in the politics of assassination and revenge as applied to the Vegas mob. Zabar is a collection of excerpts from eight of the ten stories in the collection of that title having to do with Zabar the angel (who, of course, has little if anything to do with assassination, being an angel and all), and the last--well, another wag summed it up in his review as a series of Christian one-liners, and that's about as accurate a description as I could come up with. So first off, be aware that what you see is not what you get.

For the most part, the usual problems with vanity publications (the ubiquitous spelling and grammar errors) are absent here; you'll find no more typos in The Business of Assassination than you would from any major-press book these days. The writing style, though, still pegs it as pay-to-publish; as with most books that find their way through the vanity-press grist mill, a good copywriter or line-by-line critic would have been an immense help to the book. As I always say with vanities, though, if that's not the kind of thing that bothers you, then add a couple of stars to my rating; I mark off more for writing style in books like this than I ever do for subject matter or the like. In fact, as far as subject matter goes, if the Business of Assassination had stayed on topic, it probably would have gotten one of the better ratings I'd given a vanity pub in the last couple of years; while Miller's ranting (and I use that term in the best possible sense) is, of course, not substantiated with any sort of data whatsoever--if it were, it wouldn't be a rant, would it?--there's certainly all kinds of food for thought to be found here. There are a number of allegations worth looking deeper into for the reader with a propensity for doing research, and those alone might well be worth the purchase price for the more grounded conspiracy theorists and political pundits reading this. As well, Miller, a Republican, seems to have no qualms about alienating readers of either of the big political parties in America here, and anyone who's willing to throw stones at both sides of the aisle gets points in my book. Still, some substantiation, some editing, and a willingness to either expound on the topic at hand or release a shorter book would've served The Business of Assassination in good stead. * ½

4 out of 5 stars Not about Assassination.......2007-05-13

This is a complicated book to read... or so I thought until I decided to treat it as its four constituent parts: an eleven-chapter non-fiction rant, a four-chapter fiction excerpt from Taciturn, a seven-chapter fiction excerpt from An Angel Named Zabar, and a four-chapter non-fiction excerpt from Toto Coelo. I honestly could not figure out why they were joined in the same book other than as a story collection, so I treated them individually.

Assassination--If ever there was a man born not to suffer fools gladly then that man would have to be Bob Miller. At 65, Bob is a licensed and experienced curmudgeon. (I'm only 58 and still have two years on my apprenticeship.) I would have liked to see the three follow-on excerpts removed from the book and the space devoted to filling in the missing details of Bob's life post-Vietnam. Without those details, the book starts a lot of interesting stories but leaves them at the innuendo stage. As such, those stories might appeal to the already-convinced, but if the goal is to change attitudes, they fall a bit short.

Taciturn--A wonderfully gritty, noir crime-thriller, set in modern day Las Vegas. Reminiscent of Raymond Chandler. I liked what I read so much I ordered the book.

Zabar--Bob shows his southern roots here with a collection of stories about an angel named Zabar. The writing here reminded me of Flannery O'Connor. I'll probably order this one too.

Toto Coelo--This one didn't do much for me. I'm probably the world's first fundamentalist agnostic, and hence, have a difficult time swallowing a book full of inspirational one-liners from a George Burns style comedian. Again, this one is probably affirming to the already-convinced, but too glib and too cutesy for me.

2 out of 5 stars Just because it's true, I don't have to like it........2006-03-12

A few years ago, I read a review about another book by this same author: "The statements in this book question the reality of the experiences. The words contain enough truth to bring tears to your eyes. A must read for an in-depth look in to the soul of mankind."

I'm sorry. I hate redundancy too, but this old review says exactly how I feel about this book. I've done a little research on this author, and I don't like him as a person, but he has paid his dues. Each time I think of him, his books, articles or speeches, I think of what William Blake the English poet, 1757-1827 said, "He who desires but acts not breeds pestilence."

As I read this book, I didn't have a difficult time understanding why the Secret Service had locked him away in a VA hospital for being a possible threat to former President George H.W. Bush, 1990-91. What I don't understand is why they released him.

5 out of 5 stars This guy's predictions have been 100% right on!.......2006-03-04

This book contains some of the author's speeches dating back to 2001 and articles that were published even before that. It is unbelievable how this guy was able to deliver a blow-by-blow account of what Americans could expect from Bush and Cheney years in advance. One of his speeches in this book entitled "Democracy Took The Day Off" is one he gave at an annual song writer's convention in 2004 where he said, "With the backbone of the Democratic Party, William Jefferson Clinton, out of the way and the Bush Storm Troopers in place, democracy took the day off. Then this war-for-profit crew moved forward with their plans as if world opinions were irrelevant.

"Now that the moment of glory has passed and the long years of blood, sweat and tears are upon us, they will yet again -- according to plan -- take their spoils and move on, leaving the rest of us to bury the dead and balance the checkbook.

"Think about it... $[...]million dollars and instant naturalization given to an Arab who provided the whereabouts of Saddam's sons in order that Bush, Blair and the major armed forces of the world could at least find someone or something, if not weapons of mass destruction.

"I am grateful for the many invitations to join the Democratic Party, but Ill stick it out here. I mean, how could it possibly get any worse than having the second most hated man to live in the last 200 years as your candidate?

"I'm not campaigning against a fellow Republican. The truth is Bush does not represent the Republican Party or any other party for that matter. He represents the Bush dynasty. Is it not bad enough that another four years of his dictatorship will produce yet more unemployed, homeless and demoralized Americans?

"Can we also risk having to cope with his uncontrollable ego? The leadership of this father and son team can be critiqued using a term that epitomizes their presidencies: Collateral Damage. Clearly, America's integrity and economy fall into this category when they clash with the prosperity of Bush and his accomplices."

Alot of storys in this book are hard to belive. I read alot of other mob books and they all Have different versions to the same story. A good gangster book is WISEGUY or read the UNDERBOSS . it seems to me as if this guy just wants to be important. But overall its a good book.

          1 out of 5 stars Total garbage.......2000-01-14

This book is totally lacking in credibility. It has been discredited by other more trustworthy sources. Frankos story on the Hoffa murder, for one, is a total fabrication. Please, do some research (read "The Westies," for instance, a much more jouranlistically credible source) and you will find that this book is FICTION disguised as fact. That is, if you care.

Great account of a real-life tough guy and hitman. This book provides an insider's look into the mob and various prisons. Also, detailed accounts of murders and the planning that goes into them.

I love non-fiction books. Especially crime stories. I have read a lot of books about La Cosa Nostra and I can honestly admit that this is the best one I have ever read. I would like to thank "Tony The Greek" personally for the entertainment! The best point that this author made was to forget about writing a story and to just write the truth. If I am to read non-fiction, I want it to be 100% non-fiction. This is it!!! Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for advanced InfoPath topics.......2005-06-14

If you want to get more indepth with InfoPath, this is the book for you. It covers advanced topics to launch you into designing more powerful digital forms.

I especially enjoying the topics on workflow, sharepoint and Web service integration.

1 out of 5 stars Another Microsoft "Bookware"..........2005-02-21

              Just two comments:
              1) This books fails to convince me that InfoPath is a necessary product at all. Looks like more bloatware from Microsoft. It is nothing more that a weak scripting technology. Microsoft should have used more time in better development for Access, or Excel, instead of creating some new package. But I know some people at MS, and I know that a new product there means another position for Product Unit Managers, Development Managers, Test Managers, etc. So, that is probably the only reason they needed to add yet another product to the already bloated Office.

              2) It looks like the book authors understand InfoPath, but then they don't understand anything else: BizTalk, Web Services, etc. The book is very, very, very weak when it comes down to software architecture and design. And it comes short in many other issues that affect any other piece of software built nowadays: globalization, customization, security, etc.

A better use of your time and money is probably not to use InfoPath at all in your projects. Stick to SmartClient technology, which is well explained is several paper in MSDN.

5 out of 5 stars If you must code in InfoPath, this is the only book .......2005-02-04

With all due respect to my esteemed fellow InfoPath programmer, this is the only book worth owning if you have to code complex projects in InfoPath VBScript or JavaScript. InfoPath is supposed to be the world's most cutting edge XML tool. With it's strong hooks to Web Services, it's supposed to be a thin-client tool for th 21st century. But how do you code connections to a Web Service? How do you auto populate a form using information queried from a web service? How do you query a web service from code in the first place? How do you access a UDDI catalog from code? How do you fill a list box with a number of web service descriptions to let the user choose which one is the correct service? How do you code a master-detail one-to-many form in VBScript or JScript?

This is the only book which shows you how to code this very common, typical, highly characteristic programming problems.

2 out of 5 stars Started good and then fizzled.......2005-01-28

I understand that it's probably not that easy to write a book for something like InfoPath. It's a powerful product that has tons of ins and outs; however, I expected much more for my money. Some of the examples in the book get shortchanged on explanation, and the reader is often left to fill in the gaps. In addition to that, some chapters, like chapter 10 don't even have functioning code. For instance, see if you can spot the error with this line of critical code:

              Dim sContact As String = String.Format("//Roles/Approvers/{0}[@alias=" & Quote & "{1}" & Quote & "]", sAlias)

Perhaps it's just me but it seems that the string.format needs to be passed two arguments rather than one. This is in a project that attempts to implement workflow.

This also brings to mind how the DEVELOPMENT part of the book is handled. It's fairly standard in development books to start out with simple examples and build iteratively in complexity as you go. Not with this book, you get little bits and pieces of managed code and then get a BUNCH of code in Chapter 10. Not sure why the authors decided on this style. Perhaps they were trying to show how far you can go with declarative programming.

As far as InfoPath goes, I am not sure how the standard everyday user of Office products is supposed to get excited here. The minute you need to do something even moderately standard, like having multiple sign-offs on a document, you are forced to code. And once you are forced to code you had better understand the DOM, XML, XPath, etc. Not sure what Microsoft was thinking.

Not sure that this book is much help.
