Book Description

Before Alex Steinweiss invented the album cover in 1938, at the age of 23, all albums came in plain brown wrappers. Steinweiss's idea to create a package that would protect the record and that had something visual on the outside to lure the consumer was a huge success; sales of the record "Smash Song Hits by Rodgers and Hart" soared. That simple idea revolutionized the record business and spawned an entire new field of illustration-album cover art-that is now inseparable from the product it announces. Steinweiss's covers are still regarded as icons of the genre. He designed them as miniature posters, with eye-catching graphics, distinctive and vivid colrs, and creative, even playful, typography, often incorporating his much-imitated "Steinweiss scrawl" lettering. The Steinwiess style went hand in hand with the golden age of jazz, classical, and popular music dominated by Columbia, RCA, Decca, Victor, and London Records. This book collects over 125 of the most famous and original graphics created by Steinweiss, including cover designs for Benny Goodman, Xavier Cugat, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Dizzy Gillespie, Esquivel, and many others. Designed at the same size as a 45 rpm record, this chunky book is not only a feast of graphic design, but also offers an illustrated history of music in the '30s, '40s, '50s, and '60s. Anecdotes on musicians? history of album cover design? Brief essays by Steven Heller and Jennifer McKnight-Trontz discuss Steinweiss's career and the indelible mark he has left on the graphic design and music industries. A must-have for music fans and designers alike.

alex steinweiss is a fantastic human being. generous, funny and full of great stories from his time at columbia records in the early 40's. He is tremendously talented and not just created the concept of album covers, designing more than 800 of them (start looking at your old collection in the attic :-)) but has been for the last 20 years a major accomplished painter. He has gotten awards after awards and stays humble and wise. He lives in Sarasota, Florida.

5 out of 5 stars Documents the life and work of Alex Steinweiss.......2001-03-04

It was a 23-year-old graphic designer who invented the illustrated album cover for phonograph records in 1939: before that they came in plain wrappers. For The Record documents the life and work of Alex Steinweiss, gathering over a hundred of his original graphics and providing a lavish color display of his works along with a history of his involvements in the music industry.

5 out of 5 stars Great man, great book........2000-12-20

This book does credit to a great man. Steinweiss was a true artist and a pioneer. The man created the concept of album cover as art. McKnight-Trontz does a masterful job of celebrating the artist through dazzling illustrations and informative, entertaining narrative. The casual reader will enjoy this book, as will the academic: it's all there between the brilliant covers (Steinweiss design - of course); it is the individual reader's choice as to how deep he or she wants to delve into this fascinating subject of a true twentieth-century art form.

Richly informed by in-depth field and archival research, this book offers a synthetic and accessible analysis of contemporary Vietnam. After decades of war and a socialist transformation, the country has moved toward a market economy. Echoing that shift, Vietnamese society has undergone significant changes, with increasing socioeconomic disparities among regions and within localities, greater unrest both in urban and rural areas, and a revitalization of religious and folk rituals. Moving beyond the standard emphasis on the Vietnam War and Vietnamese politics and economy, this volume provides a historically grounded examination of the dynamics of contemporary society and state-society relations that will be valuable for scholars and students alike. I don't know what book that other reviewer had, because I have a totally different opinion! Great info on the greatest television show ever. Episode guide, history of the show & its stars, plus loads of terrific photos. Okay, so it's not an intellectual experience into the deeper meaning of Lucy - that's not what I bought it for!

4 out of 5 stars Great information on "I Love Lucy".......2007-01-10

Great book for any fan of the show "I Love Lucy". Gives a detailed looked at each episode and behind the scenes tidbits. A must for any Lucy fan!

1 out of 5 stars Worst book I ever read!.......2006-08-06

This is the worst book ever written! It's obvious the author doesn't know what he is writing about. Not only that, this book is poorly written and contains no real information. The more you read, the more you wonder why you are reading. Where is this book taking me? What is the point of this book?

There is no point. Absolutely no point at all. It appears the author is merely trying to benefit from the fame of a dead Hollywood actress. If Lucy only knew!

I spent three hours with this book and it saddens me that I'll never get those three hours back. I also hope this book was printed on recylcled paper because it would be a real shame if a tree gave up its life for this.

Needless to say, I do not recommend this book to anyone.

      Book Description

In the world of Unix operating systems, the various BSDs come with a long heritage of high-quality software and well-designed solutions, making them a favorite OS of a wide range of users. Among budget-minded users who adopted BSD early on to developers of some of today's largest Internet sites, the popularity of BSD systems continues to grow. If you use the BSD operating system, then you know that the secret of its success is not just in its price tag: practical, reliable, extraordinarily stable and flexible, BSD also offers plenty of fertile ground for creative, time-saving tweaks and tricks, and yes, even the chance to have some fun. "Fun?" you ask. Perhaps "fun" wasn't covered in the manual that taught you to install BSD and administer it effectively. But BSD Hacks, the latest in O'Reilly's popular Hacks series, offers a unique set of practical tips, tricks, tools--and even fun--for administrators and power users of BSD systems. BSD Hacks takes a creative approach to saving time and getting more done, with fewer resources. You'll take advantage of the tools and concepts that make the world's top Unix users more productive. Rather than spending hours with a dry technical document learning what switches go with a command, you'll learn concrete, practical uses for that command. The book begins with hacks to customize the user environment. You'll learn how to be more productive in the command line, timesaving tips for setting user-defaults, how to automate long commands, and save long sessions for later review. Other hacks in the book are grouped in the following areas: If you want more than your average BSD user--you want to explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, create useful tools, and come up with fun things to try on your own--BSD Hacks is a must-have. This book will turn regular users into power users and system administrators into super system administrators.

Although the name is scary, the ideas inside are simple to understand and implement, yet very powerful.

I especially like their way configuring terminals and backup solutions.

Make this the FreeBSD book you buy after you've got a basic understanding of the operating system. In other words, this is a very useful "sidekick" BSD book. It's full of creative and practical hacks, and the price is right. Highly recommended.

      2 out of 5 stars Dont Bother.......2005-06-13

I just thought this book is not really that good. Most were not even hacks, but just basic usage. The only hacks book I really liked was by Rob - Linux Server Hacks. I would really recommend that one, even if you use bsd as it has true hacks with tar/ssh/etc. Try the Absolute OpenBSD book too. That is quite good and has a lot of info.

5 out of 5 stars The best BSD book on the shelves, PERIOD........2005-01-28

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced user, you will find this book extremely practical. Dru's solutions make building a BSD server from start to finish a snap. Buy this book as a supplement at the very least. 5 stars!

      OVERVIEW
      --
There is a type of information that I consider to be a gem, a kind of information that doesn't really fit anywhere formally. It's too small, or perhaps too esoteric, to fit in most places.
This makes it hard to find- though these info-gems can often can be the source of wild hacking inspiration, or solve my un-solvable problems in some elegant manner.

This kind of information sometimes gets collected and recorded, Some of us at LESMUUG have really enjoyed the Mac OSX Hints book, spawned from macosxhints.com website,

      http://lesmuug.org/reviews.html#Anchor-Mac-49575

BUT, after plowing repeatedly it's one UNIX chapter in Mac OS X Hints, I found myself craving more...

      A Problem with BSD books:
One of the quietly great things about the BSD family of UNIX Operating Systems, is the terrific documentation. The quality and consistency of the man pages, across every BSD I've ever touched, I painfully appreciate when I use man pages on other non-BSD systems.
The FreeBSD world has the FreeBSD Handbook project, a printed and free online resource which sets the bar for every fat FreeBSD book out there. OpenBSD and NetBSD both have amazing online tutorials and documentation projects as well. Even the fledgling DragonFly BSD project has a full-blown Handbook, modeled after its FreeBSD lineage.
In the OpenDarwin and OSX world we enjoy the legacy of solid man pages and solid HowTo's online from our BSD heritage, and of course free registrations to developer.apple.com to boot.

With all that great documentation, it's really tough to find a BSD book that's really valuable, especially for experienced users, and Dru Lavigne has made a valuable and fun resource with BSD Hacks. The book is an impressive compilation of BSD gems, and as it's written for newbies and hardcore hackers alike.

Dru is a Canadian BSD Rockstar, well known in the BSD world for her articles with O'Reilly online, including the FreeBSD Basics column for ONLamp,

      http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/catalog/view/au/73

so who better to write a book that doesn't fit into traditional documentation?! Someone who KNOWS BSD.

      ABOUT THIS BOOK
      --
The Book is comprised of so many disparate yet complete ideas, It's hard to sum up exactly what's in there. From networking, to gems on system maintenance, and gems about basics that really get lost in man pages. There's information about things like keeping up-to-date, giving a tutorial-level big picture of what can be done to keep your UNIX system running smoothly, boot and Login gems, some good Security Hacks and hacks about system customization and shell tricks. There's even a tutorial for how to create YOUR OWN man pages.

For Mac/Darwin users, the majority of the book applies directly to Darwin UNIX! A section which by its nature is OS-specific, would be the hacks about various port and application-distribution systems. This includes a good how-to for DarwinPorts, right along with the usual ports systems for other platforms. The section on filesystems doesn't have anything on hfs+, but that can be excused, insomuch as many mac-centric texts do it the same injustice.

      CONCLUSION
      --
If you are a UNIX user who loves info-gems like I do, or you're a Mac UNIX user who digs macosxhints.com, (and the books published from it), I feel BSD Hacks will provide many weekends, and workdays worth of BSD gems- all written by a great technical author. This book now sits next to my printed FreeBSD Handbook, and since much of these gems are fairly timeless, I believe it will stay with me for a long time to come.

      Book Description

To the uninitiated, the title may seem like an oxymoron: after all, aren't hacks what network security is supposed to prevent? But if you're network administrator, this book's title not only makes sense; it makes a lot of sense. You know that a busy administrator needs a hatful of devilishly effective security hacks to keep your 12-hour days from becoming all-nighters. Network Security Hacks is not a long-winded treatise on security theory. Instead, this information packed little book provides 100 quick, practical, and clever things to do to help make your Linux, UNIX, or Windows networks more secure today. This compendium of security hacks doesn't just cover securing TCP/IP-based services, but also provides intelligent host-based security techniques. Loaded with concise but powerful examples of applied encryption, intrusion detection, logging, trending, and incident response, Network Security Hacks will demonstrate effective methods for defending your servers and networks from a variety of devious and subtle attacks. Network Security Hacks show how to detect the presence (and track every keystroke) of network intruders, methods for protecting your network and data using strong encryption, and even techniques for laying traps for would-be system crackers. Important security tools are presented, as well as clever methods for using them to reveal real, timely, useful information about what is happening on your network. O'Reilly's Hacks Series reclaims the term "hacking" for the good guys--innovators who use their ingenuity to solve interesting problems, explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, and create useful tools. Network Security Hacks lives up to reputation the Hacks series has earned by providing the "roll-up-your sleeves and get-it-done" hacks that most network security tomes don't offer. Every hack can be read in just a few minutes but will save hours of searching for the right answer. Using just one of these amazing hacks will make this slim book's price seem like a remarkable deal. The other 99 make Network Security Hacks absolutely invaluable.

4 out of 5 stars Great bag of tricks for the network security professional.......2007-01-10

This second edition of Network Security Hacks is a collection of 125 powerful security techniques. This volume demonstrates effective methods for defending your servers and networks from a variety of devious and subtle attacks. Within this book are examples of how to detect the presence and track every keystroke of network intruders, methods for protecting your network and data using strong encryption, and even techniques for laying traps for would-be hackers. Many important security tools are presented, as well as interesting ways for using them to reveal useful information about your network's activity. There is mention in the beginning of the book about "code", but I haven't run across any yet. The closest thing I found to code were forms of command lines for various network tools and expected typical responses. So if you are not a programmer, don't be scared away. The following is the table of contents:

Chapter 1, Unix Host Security, demonstrates advanced techniques for hardening your Linux, FreeBSD, or OpenBSD server.

Chapter 2, Windows Host Security, covers many important steps that Windows administrators often overlook, including tightening down permissions, auditing all system activity, and eliminating security holes that are present in the default Windows installation.

Chapter 3, Privacy and Anonymity, discusses several ways to protect oneself online by offering solutions for encrypting email, remaining anonymous, and managing passwords for web sites.

Chapter 4, Firewalling, shows how to set up firewalls under various operating systems, such as Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and Windows. Different filtering and firewall testing techniques are also covered in this chapter.

Chapter 5, Encrypting and Securing Services, shows how provide secure services for SMTP, IMAP, POP3, Apache, and MySQL.

Chapter 6, Network Security, demonstrates some tools and techniques used to attack servers using the network itself, as well as methods for preventing these attacks.

Chapter 7, Wireless Security, includes only a handful of very useful hacks. Whether you want to share your network with others and still maintain a semblance of security, or lock down your wireless network with fine-grained authentication, this chapter has something for you.

Chapter 8, Logging, shows you how to balance the need for information with the need for brevity by automatically collecting, processing, and protecting your system logs.

Chapter 9, Monitoring and Trending, presents a number of tools and methods for watching your network and services over time, allowing you to recognize trends that will aid in future planning and enable you to tell at a glance when something just isn't right.

Chapter 10, Secure Tunnels, shows you how to implement powerful VPN technologies, including IPSec, PPTP, and OpenVPN. You will also find techniques for protecting services using SSL, SSH, and other strong encryption tools.

Chapter 11, Network Intrusion Detection, centers on the tremendously popular NIDS tool Snort and presents many techniques and add-ons that unleash this powerful tool's full potential. Also presented are methods for setting up your own "honeypot" network to attract and confuse would-be system crackers.

Chapter 12, Recovery and Response, contains suggestions on how to verify your system's integrity, preserve evidence for later analysis, and track down the human being at the other end of undesirable network traffic.

I would recommend this book to any network security professional. However, I think it is too advanced for someone who is just interested in the profession or someone who is tinkering with a home network on an amateur basis. There is no "beginner's material" to be found in this book, and it will likely be over your head if you are not already working in the field.

      "Network Security Hacks" Second Edition
      by: Andrew Lockhart
      O'Reilly Media, Inc. 2007
      ISBN: 10: 0-596-52763-2

Network Security Hacks is more advanced than some of the other "Hacks series" books.
Explains the why and how of securing your Unix, Linux, or Windows servers. Protect your data and your users form outside threats, using the detailed examples in this book. Not for beginners, this book is intended for experienced administrators, already familiar with server configurations.

4 out of 5 stars Power Tips and Tricks.......2006-11-20

O'Reilly's Hacks series have been hit or miss; mostly hits, and this second edition is no exception. Lockhart and friends bring together a set of tips and tricks in the classic O'Reilly form, and cover a scattershot of topics that people like to know.

There's over 100 hacks here, and I can't possibly cover them all. I'll pick and choose topics to illustrate why I think this book is a success. As other reviewers have noted, this book focuses on Linux and BSD security, but it does cover Windows in a decent amount. This probably reflects the community's choice of OSes (but does under represent some OS X specifics), and the availability of tools and techniques.

Chapter 1, covering 20-some hacks, covers UNIX host-level security. A lot of it is stuff you've seen before, but some of it is stuff that's hard to find (ie Systrace setups, sandboxing services), or so disparate that it's nice to have it all in one place. Chapter 2 covers over a dozen hacks for Windows that are similar, securing your Windows host.

The chapters on privacy (3), encrypting services (5), and tunneling (Chapter 10) are pretty good. They're tight, well written, and clear enough that an intermediate network or system administrator could do well. I liked that chapter 4 covered firewalling for PF on BSD, Linux's Netfilter, and the Windows firewall all similarly. The hacks on VPNs using various tools are great, they're clear in an amazingly short space.

Network and wireless security get a fair shake, and you can even learn how to scan the network for viruses, detect ARP attacks, deploy a captive portal, and assess your systems for vulnerabilities. Again, a nice spread of topics, most of them well covered in a short space.

NIDS topics get their own chapter, and things like Snort setup, maintenance, and even the basics of rule writing get covered. You'll even get an intro to Honeyd for your time.

I would have liked to have seen Chapter 12 on recovery and response get a lot more time and effort, I think it's sorely needed. Perhaps if everyone writes a hack for this chapter they'll add them to the third edition.

All in all a good book for a skilled, intermediate level system and network administrator. This book carries on the hacks series with style and skill, and delivers almost everything in a small package.

5 out of 5 stars Network Security Hacks.......2006-08-18

The book is very well written in a professional form. I was able to learn a lot out of it. It should be in every IT security persons library. But it is not a book for beginners. Although all issues are well explained, a certain computer background is needed, and not basic knowledge only. The book is worth its price.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for both Linux and Windows.......2006-03-17

First, I write software professionally. I write software, I am not a Sys Admin (which is hard work I might add; System Administration is for hardcore people.) This book saved me money by giving me answers to problems that would have taken me days to find the answers to by searching the internet.

I would have said 5 stars but this covers Unix, Windows and Linux and I was just looking for a Linux book. It is good none the less.

Time is money in this business and this book save both time and money.

Also the book is a "good" read. The authors write well and that keeps you reading. Not a dry manual.

If you are doing Linux for fun or work you need will need to buy this book. It allows you more time to sleep at night.
