My favorite book about Nirvana. For one thing, it doesn't sensationalize, but it doesn't gloss anything over. Having been active in the Seattle music scene throughout Nirvana's obscurity, fame, and demise, I can vouch for the accuracy of its description of the music community in the late '80s and early '90s and Nirvana's role. And being in a band that's currently climbing the ladder, I appreciated the many lessons this book has to offer about the workings of the recording industry.
Best of all, because this book was written before Cobain's death, it is not tinged with the "isn't this tragic" attitude that permeates many books about Nirvana and Cobain. Instead, the book is vibrant with the energy, excitement, and passion that swept local musicians the day "Nevermind" was released, local audiences in the months after, the U.S, and--lest we forget--the world, during Nirvana's more-than-15-minutes of fame.
Book Description
Nirvana came out of nowhere in 1991 to sell nearly five million copies of their landmark album Nevermind, whose thunderous sound and indelible melodies embodied all the confusion, frustration, and passion of the emerging Generation X. Come As You Are is the close-up, intimate story of Nirvana -- the only book with exclusive in-depth interviews with bandmembers Kurt Cobain, Krist Noveselic, and Dave Grohl, as well as friends, relatives, former bandmembers, and associates -- now updated to include a new final chapter detailing the last year of Kurt Cobain's life, before his tragic suicide in April 1994.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive Nirvana book.......2007-08-19
As the owner of every book written on this subject Come As You Are stands out as the definitive Nirvana book. With the exception of the final chapter the entire thing was written before Kurt's death. This gives fans an honest objective view on Kurt and Nirvana that is absent in just about everything written since his suicide. The marketplace has been flooded with books focusing on sleaze and conspiracy theories instead of the man and their music. Here the writer stayed on course and gave us what truly matters while managing to keep this entertaining. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about Kurt's life and his rise from troubled child to reluctant rock star.
Good if researching Kurt's life.......2007-02-28
The author depended way too much on Courtney's version of her husband's life.
don't bother.......2006-11-10
This book is very difficult to get into. Poorly written and in poor taste. As a big Kurt Cobain fan, I was disappointed.
Couldn't put it down.......2006-08-08
I couldn't put this book down. As it was a biography of Nirvana, not just Kurt Cobain, it felt more complete. It didn't focus as much on the other members, but at least they had a very recognized presence. It also does not focus extensively on Cobain's death because it was written beforehand. However, this turned into a very positive thing because the whole book does not revolve around the drama of his death, but the wonder and hardships of the band until that point. There has been a lot of controversy over the happenings of Cobain's life in particular, so it's hard to say which book is more accurate. However, this book was convincing and very interesting.
Tells the full story.......2006-02-02
Nirvana has been lionized by many different people from writers to film makers so it's refreshing to read something that seems to have come from an honest place. More than a decade after his death Kurt is still missed and the passing of time will do nothing to lessen the band's impact on rock music. Good book.
Book Description
The "one China" policy officially supported by the People's Republic of China, the United States, and other countries asserts that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it. The debate over whether the people of Taiwan are Chinese or independently Taiwanese is, Melissa J. Brown argues, a matter of identity: Han ethnic identity, Chinese national identity, and the relationship of both of these to the new Taiwanese identity forged in the 1990s. In a unique comparison of ethnographic and historical case studies drawn from both Taiwan and China, Brown's book shows how identity is shaped by social experience--not culture and ancestry, as is commonly claimed in political rhetoric.

The Description of this book is Misleading........2006-06-25
"The "one China" policy officially supported by the People's Republic of China, the United States, and other countries asserts that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it." The Description of this book is Misleading.
United States acknowledged China's claim but do not agree with "Taiwan is a part of China". United states position is the resolution shall be peaceful.
The answers I was looking for !.......2006-05-11
If - like me - you are interested in the title's answer, Ms.Brown's is the book! Quoting some of her words: " Many events are completely unknown to us, many events are known only through extremely biased perspectives, and many events are so contradictorily reported that is difficult to reconstruct even a chronological sequence of what occurred". And - believe me! - Ms. Brown interviewed people - in Taiwan ( living there) and interviewed people - in China !!! We are talking about an Stanford University Professor. Congratulations and thanks to Amazon .
Very insightful !.......2005-09-19
I'm a Taiwanese myself. Even though the content of this book is not new to me, it still provides a fantastic read for me personally and I can imagine it'd be more fantastic for someone wishing to know more about Taiwan. Because Taiwan is so isolated in the international arena, books such as this one is highly recommended for the average person. The only aspect I did not like about this book is the first part of this book's title: "Is Taiwan Chinese?". I'd just like to inform readers that all the population in Asian countries (east, north and south east) all originated from China. So basically everyone is Chinese, so it doesn't just apply to Taiwan. It is like saying: Is Australia British? Nevertheless, a rather informative book for all.
Been Waiting For This!.......2004-02-02
At last, a book that covers an aspect of Taiwanese history and culture not often discussed until recent years: the Taiwanese people are a hybrid people. Many have some Plains Aborigine blood (traced on the maternal side). But, with cultural stigma, many Plains Aborigines and part Plains Aborigines forfeited their identity and were absorbed by "Han" identity. I've been waiting for a book in English to discuss this area and am glad Melissa Brown published this book.

Book Description
In the last few years, security has become a hot-button issue for IT organizations of all sizes. Accordingly, many of the security features that were either optional or suspect in Windows 2000 have become solid, effective fixtures in Windows Server 2003-making it the most secure operating system Microsoft has ever produced. That is, if you know how to configure it properly.
The Windows Server 2003 Security Cookbook wants to make sure that you do know how. Picking up right where its predecessor, the Windows Server Cookbook, left off, this desktop companion is focused solely on Windows Server security. It teaches you how to perform important security tasks in the Windows Server 2003 OS using specific and adaptable recipes. Each recipe features a brief description of the problem, a step-by-step solution, and then a discussion of the technology at work. Whenever possible, the authors even tell you where to look for further information on a recipe.
The book is written in a highly modular format, with each chapter devoted to one or more technologies that Windows Server 2003 provides. This approach allows you to look up a task or scenario that you want to accomplish, find that page, and read that particular recipe only. Topics include:
- System preparation and administration
- Protecting the computer at the TCP/IP level
- Applying security options to Active Directory
- Improving security on domain controllers
- Securing DHCP controllers
- Encrypting and signing network traffic using IPSec
- Patch management
If you're an intermediate or advanced system administrator who wants to feel secure when deploying Windows Server 2003 and its related services, then you don't want to be without the Windows Server 2003 Security Cookbook.

COOKING SECURITY WITH WINDOWS SERVER 2003!!.......2006-10-05
Do you use Windows Server 2003 and perform security tasks as one of your primary job functions? If you do, then this book is for you! Authors Mike Danseglio and Robbie Allen, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that covers Windows Server 2003 and some amount of Windows XP security.
Danseglio and Allen, begin by setting the stage for the rest of the book by providing an introduction to Windows Server 2003 security concepts. Then, the authors show you how to secure an initial configuration. Next, they describe many techniques to help protect the computer at the TCP/IP protocol level. Then, the authors discuss how to protect local and network files with strong encryption. Next, they show you how to apply numerous options to your Active Directory forest. The authors continue by describing the use of Group Policy to configure and increase the security of both client and server computers. Then, the authors show you how to use security templates to save and deploy settings. Next, they focus on the tasks necessary to improve security on domain controllers. The authors then show you the vulnerabilities and security recipes you can use to defend against user account attacks such as password guessing or spoofing. Then, they describe how you can restrict rights and permissions to ensure that only desired users can perform specific needs. The authors continue by focusing on securing the grotesquely insecure DHCP component of Windows. Then, they describe how you can prevent several common DNS-based attacks. Next, the authors show you how to secure a file and print server, which is one of the most common uses of Windows Server 2003. The authors then discuss numerous methods that you can use to encrypt and sign network traffic using IPec. Then, they continue by covering the locking down of the much-maligned IIS. Next, the authors explore the remote access technologies of RRAS and IAS in depth, with a particular focus on improving their security. Then, they describe how you can help secure these remote access technologies, which are favorite attack vectors for evildoers. The authors then go into great detail describing how to plan, deploy, and use both PKI and certificates. They continue by showing you how to audit different types of events. Next, show you how to configure and manage event logs. Finally, they focus on and help simplify one of the most over-hyped security issues: patch management.
This most excellent book should not be considered the ultimate reference to Windows security--that's not the intention of the authors. More importantly, their intention is to provide efficient and innovative ways to complete tasks and resolve problems.

Must have for AD support folks........2006-05-27
I use this book and also the author's AD cookbook daily to help with supporting our global Active Directory server infrastructure. This is an absolutely indispensable reference.
Very helpful to admins / IT support.......2006-03-13
We're a software engineering company, and I maintain our internal servers (6-7 servers) as well as provide customer support on our products. A lot of that involves asking for information from the customer - and this book helps in putting together scripts that I can send out that will send back information to us that avoids us asking to exchange 5 emails to get the same result. Anything that saves my time - and our customers time - is worthy of purchasing. Well done, well organised book - and the author returns emails!
Start here, it is all here!.......2006-03-04
This book has a sound foundation for managing a windows 2003 server. The chapters are logically organized. I used some of the examples in the book to migrate some file shares in my network from unix to windows, the book was there for the rescue (the fact that the author has a solid windows/unix experience makes this book even more attractive). The solutions in this book include windows scripting, an area that is seldom talked about in windows literature. If you are serious about managing a windows 2003 server competently then you want to have this book in your arsenal.
Great Book........2005-12-14
This book is a great resource covering a wide variety of interactions with Windows Servers. Whether you are new or experienced, this book is an invaluable tool.
Great Resource for Admins.......2005-12-11
This book is not one for beginners who don't know what they are doing and are looking for detailed explanations of topics. This is made purely for the admin who needs to get a job done, and quickly, and knows already what they are trying to accomplish. I really appreacieate all the scripting examples and also how Rob puts in some great building blocks for scripting (like how to redirect your output to an excel file rather than just the usual Wscript.Echo output that you can redirect to a text file or to stdout). Great Job Robbie!!
