Book Description
The epic, rollicking, up-and-down life of Muddy Waters, who went from Mississippi farmhand to musical legend, who invented electric blues and created the template for the rock-and-roll band and its wild lifestyle, is brought into sharp focus in this widely acclaimed biography. - A book praised equally for its stylishness, its richly entertaining narrative, and its impeccable scholarship. - As a filmmaker, Robert Gordon directed the PBS American Masters documentary Muddy Waters Can't Be Satisfied and the award-winning blues documentary All Day and All Night, featuring B. B. King and Rufus Thomas.

Chicago Blues and Mississippi Mud.......2007-06-23
Combining life history with a social history of Chicago's blues scene of the late 1940s through early 80s, Gordon's book is a highly readable and carefully documented biography. He uses a great variety of published and unpublished sources as well as his own interviews with Muddy's family members, friends, and fellow musicians to provide an excellent understanding of Muddy Waters' contributions to Chicago's blues scene. Because this is a biography, the focus is necessarily on Waters' influences on other musicians. These contributions are important as the guitarist, singer, and songwriter had a huge impact on the music. Gordon demonstrates how some of the major influence that Muddy Waters had on the blues was through an indirect route -- via England. He vividly demonstrates how the music of Muddy Waters was a major inspiration for the British Blues-Rock music of the 1960s, showing, in turn, how this affected Muddy Waters' own career. This is an important part of the story, and its emphasis is very relevant to Muddy Waters' life history. However, I would have liked a bit more discussion of Muddy Waters' relationship to other blues players throughout his career. This information can be gleaned out of a reading of other blues musicians' biographies, so it's not necessarily a major problem with this fine book. In fact, the way this book sparks the reader's curiousity about other Chicago players may be another strength to this well-told story.
Impressive Research.......2006-12-29
Gordon did his homework in writing this book, and I was glad to see that he tried to grasp Muddy as a man, not just as a music icon or a stereotypical rags-to-riches story. I feel as though I was given a full look at Muddy Waters, warts and all.
The one problem I have with the book is the writing style. The endless grand similes were brutal; I found myself wincing at some of them. I suppose the self-indulgent, flowery style fits the idea of writing about an artistic subject, but the similes seemed like a crutch. "Show, don't tell" is one of a writer's best adages. Grand similes, to me, scream "shortcut." Like a rusty dagger thrust between two ribs, then twisted so that the oxidized edge of the blade could be felt grabbing flesh and grinding against moist bone, it bugged me.
That one criticism aside, I, as an amateur historian, author, and blues musician, applaud Mr. Gordon's efforts and highly recommend that you read this book to understand one of the key people in American music.
The Birth of the Chicago Blues............2006-02-07
From the first line to the last, Robert Gordon transports you back in time....to the birth of a legend, a culture and a way of life.
This book is absolute excellence. I very highly recommend it to the deep blues fan as well as the novice.
Well Documented Biography.......2005-04-14
How can one document the life of someone who spent the first 30+ years of his life as a poor, peasant cotton farmer? It's not easy to get a good biography on such an individual, but blues fans and historians have for years been tracking down information on the life of Muddy Waters for decades, and in this book that information is compiled in a well written, informative biography.
This book explores Muddy's life on the plantation, his early interest in music, his love life, his family life, his desire to become a famous blues musician, his travels, his successes and his failures.
The author is blunt. Obviously an admirer of Muddy Waters, the author does not hide the more shameful behavior of the great musician. Coming out of this book, I admire Muddy Waters as a musician and band leader. As a friend, a father, a husband, a person he is a disappointment.
A mix of good & bad traits........2005-03-24
Mr. Gordon's bio of Chicago Blues icon Muddy Waters (given name McKinley Morganfield) is a good narrative of a fascinating life that, unfortunately, falls short of the work the man deserved. Gordon fails to explore, and barely mentions, the impact of Waters' commercial success on the racial climate of the 60s & 70s.
The index is very weak, omitting several topics that appear in the text.
Gordon's work is entertaining, but serves mainly to demonstrate that a solid, scholarly biography of the great bluesman still remains to be written.

Way too biased.......2001-10-03
I am currently taking a grad school course of Sports Ethics and we are using this book as a text. Coakley begins each chapter well using differnt socialogcal schools of thought as a basis for defining the each issue that is presented chapter by chapter. However, the second half of each chapter turns into his own personal treatise on what is wrong with sports in today's society. Although I do commend Coakley on having the guts to let his view be known, I don't feel for a book that is used as a text he presents the argument equally well on each subject.
France's reading.......1999-05-10
My English is bad and approximativ, sorry. This book is my "bible" for my first degree's students (University of Physical Activities, Héas Stéphane, sociologist at Rennes, France, professional tel:0299142051). It offers a large sociology of sport' synthese in american and english languages. I love illustrations and tables. Nevertheless, the french researchs are "quasi-"inexistant: it's dammageable. Thank you for your book indeed.

A complete picture of playing craps.......2000-10-04
Came back from Vegas and wanted to learn more so I ordered 6 different books and have tested the strategies. This book was among the top 3 since it covered all aspects of playing craps including money management, a full review of different betting strategies, as well as a quick overview of the basics. Vogel does not unrealistically set your winning expectations as it done by other authors to sell books. I also highly recommend John Patrick's "So You Wanna Be A Gambler: Adv. Craps" book and note that Edell's "How to Make Your Living Playing Craps" may be worth reading as well.
Needs an editor.......2000-03-07
While the basic information is presented in a concise and well-organized manner, it was very distracting to fight through the grammatical mistakes, punctuation errors and/or typos on nearly every page! The publisher should be ashamed to put out a book that has obviously not been edited.
The UNREAL Deal!.......2000-03-05
This was a poorly written book covering most of the basic info about the game which would only interest someone without any previous background. I would ask the other reviewers if they are related to the author! You will find numerous spelling errors throughout the book. A must avoid book!
What A Book!.......2000-01-28
Despite my relative experience at the game ( I've been a player and avid fan of the game for over 5 years), I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Vogel has a lot of great gambling methods that have really made a difference in the level of my winnings. In addition, he probably has one of the best methods for maintaining discipline and managing your money, methods that carry over to most casino games. Like I said before, I've been playing for years and read many books on the game. Before I read this one, I was averaging winnings of about $250/trip. Since I've read this, I've had three trips and won over $700 on each trip. I attribute some of this to my own experience, but mostly it is a result Vogel's excellent strategies and money management techniques. Novices and mid-level players will learn an incredible amount and should read this book before any other. Even those of you who have been playing for decades should pick this one up for the sections on money management alone.
Excellent Book!.......2000-01-21
Of all of the books of this genre I have read, this ranks at the top. If you're novice, you'll learn all of the ins and outs to the game. Intermediate or highly experienced players will take away a whole new view of the game that will increase their winnings. Vogel talks in detail about every type of wager, how it's made, and when to do it; strategies useful to any player; how to manage your money; general casino knowledge. The most noteworthy section involves hedge-betting, which is an amazing technique for players to bank the house. I strongly recommend it.

Forta's examples are clear and his writing style is crisp and concise. As with earlier editions, this revision includes coverage of current versions of all major commercial SQL platforms. New this time around is coverage of MySQL, and PostgreSQL. All examples have been tested against each SQL platform, with incompatibilities or platform distinctives called out and explained.

Sincere warning to newbies: Don't buy this book!!!.......2007-09-24
This is my first review and I'm sad to say it is a negative one. I bought this book after having read all the other positive reviews. I discounted some of the few negative ones.
This book requires you download and run a couple of scripts to create and populate sample tables. I provides HORRIBLE instructions on how to do this.
This guy, Ben, was nice enough to create a site where users can ask him questions. You will be lucky if he responds to your question but even if he does, it will be rather smug, and in my case, incomplete.
I bear no ill will towards this guy, but caveat emptor - unless you are already very comfortable with struggling mightily with lots of time to burn to get basic questions answered - don't buy this book.
Primo SeQueL .......2007-08-23
If you manage SQL developers, or hire SQL consultants, this book will give you a deeper understanding of exactly what they are doing and give you a more realistic expectation of results.
If you are new or returning to SQL this is the ideal primer. Ben covers the gamut of SQL statements from basic to fairly advanced, and leaves you feeling that you really learned something you can use right away - this is typical of Ben's books.
This book covers general SQL statements for ANSI Standard SQL, but also addresses application specifics for Oracle, MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL and a few others.
A nice summary if you learned from the bottom up........2007-07-31
I learned my SQL by supporting the SQL of others, reading MSDN, and working with DBAs for new queries. I never made much of SQL since I often had DBAs I was told to use or used APIs that built SQL (now such as Kodo JDOQL).
However, I since also have to debug JDOQL, that means reading SQL traces. So... I needed a cheap, concise book with easy to follow examples. This book did that, and gave me thinking points to start with "what ifs" for scenarios and failure cases.
Also, it provided a simple, non-wind-bagged explanation of joins that sticks with me. Turns out I have been doing implicit INNER JOINS for years without knowing the fancy terminology for the "equijoin".
It is not the SQL bible, but it is not over-priced liked one. It is not a replacement for your DBMSs reference manual, as it often defers to the documentation for "further details". It is fast paced and practical. It does cover several DBMSs to some degree.
If you are a hard core DBA this is not it, but if you are developer who wants to take some power back from your DBAs, understand query traces, and write some useful queries that don't over exploit DBMS X's Stored Procedure syntax... this book may be useful.
Great Quick Resource - Easy to Understand for Newbies.......2007-06-27
This is a phenomenal resource that can be used as a quick resource or to learn SQL from scratch. The examples are easy to understand and then apply to the real world. It is not a resource for SQL guru's and doesn't address everything SQL is capable of. It does, however, reflect 80% of the features that are used 95% of the time.
more like four and a half stars.......2007-06-22
I bought Learning SQL (O'Reilly) mistakenly thinking that it might be a good book for a novice. Teach Yourself SQL is a good book for a novice - a really good book. This book is a series of lessons that will get you up and running right away. I found I retained more with Forta's lesson style over the reference book style. A great book to start SQL.
Why 4 1/2 stars? This book covers most of the major DBMS: MYSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, etc. It is amazing that one book can effectively address so many programs. But as I went further into the book I found myself getting stuck in sections that did not apply to the DBMS I was using (MYSQL). I eventually started using MySQL Crash Course (Sams Teach Yourself in 10 Minutes) which is a very similar, but an even better book. If you are thinking of learning SQL on MYSQL, go get the Crash Course.

a MYSQL book for a true beginner.......2007-06-22
You do not have to know anything about MYSQL or relational databases in order to start this book; a true novice can begin here. This book is desgined to get you up and running quickly. Although this book can also be used as a reference, it is intended as a series of hands on lessons. Forta's Teach Yourself SQL is also good, but if you are using MYSQL, this is the one to get.
Perfect !!.......2007-04-27
I am a PHP guy not a database guy. I know what I want to do most of the time but I don't know the exact syntax. This book is great, quick reference for just that. I use it probably 3-5 times a day. Great book for a reference!
a good start for mySQL.......2006-11-04
Great book to get you start into mysql. Very good examples and explanations. rather basic in some things, but overall it is worth the money. I got this book and O'Reilly's "MySQL cookbook". A good combination, that got me started with MySQL in no time. Mind you, I knew all the relational database stuff and sql queries already, but didn't know the specifics of MySQL. I was working with MS Access, but Access cannot handle large amounts of data I needed to upload for data mining projects. MySQL is just great -and free. These two books are excellent. I highly recommend them.
THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU (NOVICE TO EXPERIENCED).......2006-10-13
ATTN: If you are a beginner, or if you just want to brush up on your MYSQL skills, then this is the book. I also purchased two other MYSQL books but they are not half as easy to read as this. Ben Forta is technical but explains everything in such a way that anyone could learn this stuff. He provides detailed examples in this book as well as well as GOOD explanations of how the code is to be used and why. THIS IS A VERY QUICK READING BOOK AND IF YOU NEED TO LEARN FAST, THEN WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR... BUY THE CHEAP BOOK!!
Ben Forta is G-d.......2006-09-22
Ben Forta is easily the most readable and to-the-point technical writer I know of. He includes all the right details at the right time. Example: all the books tell you how to do selects and how to create databases and tables, but the bury the simple detail of how to CONNECT to a database. Do you have any idea how many sql books neglect this extraordinarily important point? In ben's book it's right up front. And that's only one example. Buy the book for yourself and see.

Customer Reviews:
it is out of date (using mysql 4.0).......2007-09-15
This book is based on MySQL 4.0 and some commands don't work on the new version. And this book also has lots of errors. For example, some code (products table)of the sampdb is missing in Appendix B. And it also misses some details so that you have to solve them by yourself.Interesting though.
Easy read...very useful.......2007-04-23
I have read only half this book (the first half which is dedicated to beginners database work) and found it easy to read and useful. When I become advanced enough I will read the second half. It includes topics like the SQL off-limits words that you shouldn't use in your database naming fields - which is always helpful (Especially when you are like "I know this function should be working!" and it isn't because you've used something in that list - you won't spend hours trying to debug your code!)
I will buy Sams Teach yourself books for other topics again.

THE book for all SQL Server T-SQL developers - a MUST have book - Review of Database Administrator SQLAuthority.com.......2007-08-19
Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL in 10 Minutes (Sams Teach Yourself)
by Ben Forta
Short Review:
If T-SQL (Transact-Structured Query Language) is foreign tongue to you, after reading this book, you will speak T-SQL. This book is SQL Server version of best-selling book Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes. This book teaches what a SQL developer must know methodically, systematically, and exactly. Anybody who are new to SQL Server and wants to learn most of T-SQL which can be implemented in short time in their application - BUY this book immediately.
Detail Review:
This is the one book I was awaiting eagerly. I claim that I am very experience Database Administrator and Database Developer, however, I have learned something new from this book of acclaimed author Ben Forta.
This book is focused on T-SQL only. It begins with simple data retrieval and continues to develop complex topics. It addresses various topics that are enough to get some work done with SQL Server as well explains concept in depth. SQL Server 2005 is a very complex, feature rich product. This book does a wonderful job of explaining the various features with out going to too many details that majority of the users will not need anyway. This book covers all of the important aspects of SQL Server 2005 without clouding the information with tons of examples that are not for every user.
Author has divided the book into short comprehensible chapters along with to the point examples and explanations of the concepts. If you see "Table of Contents" of this book, you will find that this book covers many areas. I will talk about few of my personal favorite chapters of this book here to demonstrate, what this book does is best at.
Chapter 5: Sorting Retrieved Data
If you want to sort in descending order on multiple columns, be sure each column has its own DESC keyword.
When you are sorting textual data, is A the same as a? And does a come before B or after Z? In dictionary sort order, A is treated the same as a. If you need an alternate sort order, you can not accomplish it with a simple ORDER BY clause.
It is not required, and it is perfectly legal to sort data by a column that is not retrieved.
Chapter 10: Using Data Manipulation Functions
It is far safer to always use a full four digit year so that SQL Server does not have to make any assumptions for you.
When comparing dates, always use DATEDIFF(), and do not make assumptions about how dates are stored.
Chapter 15: Creating Advanced Joins
It is worth noting that table aliases are only used during query execution. Unlike column aliases, table aliases are never returned to the client.
Self joins are often used to replace statements using subqueries that retrieve data from the same table as the outer statement. Sometimes these joins execute far more quickly than do subqueries.
Chapter 22: Programming with T-SQL
This is my most favorite chapter. Experienced programmers will find this chapter most interesting.
To discover the secret of SQL, this is the book you need to read, extremely well written, easy to follow and most importantly to the point. This has got to be the smallest SQL book in existence with highest amount of quality content. A really MUST have book.
Rating: 5 stars
In Summary, A MUST read.

Customer Reviews:
Great SQL Server Book for Beginners.......2001-08-04
This is a great introductory book to Microsoft SQL Server 7 (and even SQL Server 2000). The 10 minute tag is a little unrealistic and smells of marketing. However, if you need a quick resource on writing SQL queries then this an excellent book. I use it as more of a quick reference than a learning tool.
CONTENTS OF THIS BOOK: What is SQL Server -- Understanding Databases -- Finding Information in the Database -- Adding and Changing Data -- Using Data in Microsoft Word -- Analyzing Numerical Data with Microsoft Excel -- Including SQL Server Data in Your Microsoft Access Database -- Simple Web Publishing -- Advanced Web Publishing -- An Interactive Web Application -- Improving Query Performance -- Analyzing Your Data with SQL -- More SQL: Defining Data -- Storing SQL in the Database -- Controlling How Changes Are Made -- Simplifying Common Queries -- Managing Databases the Easy Way -- Keeping Your Server Safe -- Monitoring Activity -- More Powerful Options for Moving Data
4.5 Stars - Very good way to get exposed to the basics..........2001-04-16
I needed a quick way to get exposed to the basics of SQL Server 7.0 due to the nature of my most recent job. Therefore I spent some time shopping, looking for the options that would allow me to achieve this.
Price was not my main concern, yet William Robinson's book from the '10 minutes' series by Sams, gave quick answers to most of my questions, in a very nicely structured way: in lessons you can digest 10 minutes at a time.
Major drawbacks: it refers too often to a Database you might not have installed in your machine (i.e. if you're reading the book at home in order to apply the acquired knowledge at work), PLUS there is an unnecessary sidetrack in lessons 4-8 (in my opinion). If you're using SQL Server, I don't think you'll be using it as much to interact with Word or Excel. Yet you can easily skip these lessons and the flow will not be affected significantly.
Overall, I give it 4.5 stars.
The best quick start primer for SQL Server 7.0.......2000-09-28
This book actually lives up to its name. It gives a fast and relatively painless explanation of SQL Server 7. It assumes very little knowledge of databases. At most, the prerequisites are a little knowledge of SQL or of a simple database like Access. Web developers will appreciate the broad, yet helpful approach on everything from table creation to stored procedures. This book teaches by giving concise and well designed examples of queries and code. It will explain topics like cursors, triggers, stored procedures, basic SQL, Transact SQL, and even a little ASP. It even addresses some speed, security, and design issues. Any RDBMS or SQL Server 7.0 neophyte needs this book by his side. I would recommend reading this book first, before you tackle any of the other volumes of SQL Server references online or otherwise.
Very good book.......2000-08-26
this is a very good book for someone who need to quickly learn the SQL without getting into the details of database design and administration. It is straigt forward and right to the point. A real page turner!
Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 7.0.......2000-03-20
After reading "Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL, Quick steps for fast results, in 10 Minutes," by Ben Forta, Mr. Robison's pales. The material in general is good, however the details are presented in a string of possible command parameters ... - making it difficult to follow for the novice.
I would suggest that the book be rewritten along the lines of Mr. Forta's approach.
