Book Description
A complete and fascinating chronicle of Beatles music and history, Beatlesongs details the growth, evolution, and dissolution of the most influential group of out time.
Drawing together information from sources that include interviews, insider accounts, magazines, and news wire services, this is a complete profile of every Beatles song ever written -- from recording details such as who played which instruments and sang what harmonies to how each song fared on the charts and how other musicians and critics felt about it. Chronologically arranged by U.K. release date, Beatlesongs nails down dates, places, participants, and other intriguing facts in a truly remarkable portrait of the Liverpudlian legends.
Behind each song is a story -- like Paul's criticism of George's guitar playing during the Rubber Soul sessions, John's acid trip during the Sgt. Pepper's session, and the selection process for the Revolver album cover. And carefully examined along the way are the Beatles' evolving musical talents, their stormy private lives, and their successful -- and unsuccessful -- collaborations.
Beatlesongs is truly an inside look at the Fab Four and a treasure for all their fans.

A Must For All Beatles Fans.......2007-05-12
This book contains everything you could possibly want to know about each Beatles song, as well as album: who wrote what (thus shattering the illusion that all Lennon/McCartney songs were written by the both of them), which Beatle played what instrument, time of recording, chart action, and comments by the Beatles themselves and people who knew them.
The book is an essential reference book and a must-have for all Beatles fans.
An awesome resource.......2007-05-06
While I read this book cover-to-cover after buying it in June of 1994, in the years since I've flipped through it countless times, be it just to look up information about a certain song or to read about a certain album. Basically, it's one of those books that doesn't necessarily have to be read cover-to-cover, but can be read as needed and wanted, like a mini-encyclopedia. It's one of the books honored enough to have had a constant place on the bookshelf attached to the head of my bed, even over ten years after having excitedly lovingly bought it at the age of fourteen. Going in chronological order from "PPM" to "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)," it covers all of their albums and singles from 1963 to 1970. And in keeping with the chronological order, LIB is covered before AR, since even though LIB was their last album to be released, we all know that it was actually recorded before AR. It covers chart positions, recording dates, who played what, album packaging, authorship (breaking down who wrote whom, which sometimes yields some surprises, such as how the credit for "Piggies" is George 85%, John 10%, and George's mother Louise 5%), ample quotes and comments by The Beatles and others on these songs and albums, background information on the making of the albums and songs, and miscellaneous bits of trivia and information. Side-topics include The Beatles' hatred of the shoddy U.S. repackagings from Capitol Records, Ringo as a drummer, the Butcher cover, and the use of "Revolution" in a shoe commercial in 1987. It wraps up with appendices breaking down who had the most songwriting credit, songs The Beatles wrote for other performers (such as Paul writing several songs for Peter and Gordon, one of them under the pseudonym Bernard Webb, and George writing "Sour Milk Sea" for Jackie Lomax), and unreleased recordings from 1960 to 1969 (including such songs as "September Song," "Besame Mucho," "If You've Got Troubles," and "What's the New Mary Jane"). There's also a bibliography at the very end. While this book may contain some errors, I don't think any of them are really glaring, nor are there excess amounts of them. The only major error I can find in this book is that, since it came out in 1989, it could stand to have an updated edition. A lot of the songs mentioned in the third appendix have since been officially released on the Anthology sets and are no longer languishing away in the vaults or on bootlegs. But since none of the basic information on the major songs has changed, I'd highly recommend the book to both new and serious longtime fans. There's something in here for every variety of fan.
Excellent for ALL Beatlemaniacs........2007-01-11
Ever want the inspiration, recording summary, authorship, and even "'PAUL IS DEAD' HYSTERIA" facts for the world's most influential rock group's songs, all in one place? This is what Dowlding's Beatlesongs delivers. My copy is completely broken in from years of flipping, and it never gets old. Everyone will learn something about their favorite Beatles tunes by reading this from cover-to-cover, and I recommend it to even the most casual fans. Note: There are only a few blaring ERRORS that I could find, but the book is so good overall that I don't really mind, and I think that anyone who would must be pretty darn picky.
fascinating but flawed.......2006-10-18
This is a spectacular book, given that it tries to list authorship for each song. Unfortunately, the ratios given are that of a fan, just working out what he thinks in his mind, without any factual evidence. For example, he gives Ringo a 0.2 writing credit for 'what goes on'. where does that come from? And John giving a line on 'piggies' or 'taxman' is hardly 0.1 of the song. This is taking things too far and being pedantic. Anyome can contribute a one-liner to a song, but this hardly represents anything.
He also attributes songs like 'Wait' 50-50. This song has many people claiming Lennon wrote it, but Paul claims 'in his own write' to have done this himself, and he sings the lead vocal. Also where does the 0.65 and 0.35 come from in 'in my life'?
There are also factual errors. Many many of them. Harrison plays violin on 'don't pass me by'? No piano from John on Oba di obla da, even though the writer even notes John plays it. And the numerous mentions of John playing tambourine, when it is well known he could not keep rhythm well.
Still worth 5 stars, as it is a tremendous read and a good effort.
Great book, but flawed.......2006-06-18
Like other readers' copies, my book is battered and tattered from constant use. This isn't the kind of book you read sequentially. You put in a Beatles CD and thumb through as you listen to the music. It's more of a reference guide than anything else.
It's well-researched, thorough, and essential for any Beatles fan, whether your interest in the Moptops is minor, or you're obsessed with them.
I gave it 4 stars because I have a couple of problems.
First, this book was published in 1989. With the release of the Anthology CDs and the treasure trove of books written by insiders (e.g. Geoff Emerick, Tony Bramwell, etc.) in the past few years, this book really needs to be updated.
The thing I was most disappointed about when I read this book was the absolute bias toward Paul McCartney and against John Lennon, which the author made no effort to hide. Mr. Dowlding apparently views them as rivals, a la Duke-North Carolina or Chiefs-Raiders, instead of as a partnership. He never misses an opportunity to try to use Lennon's own quotes to make him look foolish while playing up McCartney. I don't get into the whole Lennon vs. McCartney thing. I like them both. And I'm really not interested in the author's opinion on the matter. I just want the facts, not his editorializing. If he had even made the slightest effort to be unbiased, this book would get 5 stars. As it is, I don't always trust his information.
And as other reviewers have noted, there are quite a few factual errors.
But overall, it's a great book. Other than the Anthology, it's the only Beatles book I've ever felt the need to own.

A Confession.......2003-09-30
Look, I am biased. I took his class in my freshman year of college. But I was a poor student who needed to fufill a humanities credit, and from the description of the course booklet, it seemed vaguely interesting.
But there are a few things you need to consider about me, the reviewer:
Due to my overwhelming and stupid class schedule, I was sleeping poorly and thus (since his class was in the morning) I either skipped it or slept in the back of the lecture hall. But I made sure to read this very book and attend the TA sessions.
Despite my lack of time spent on the class itself, I managed to learn quite a lot of things from this book and the professor, Richard Handler.
One, I learned about the contradictory nature of "perservation" and the use of assigning organic qualities to a "culture." I am sure other people can go into this with more eloquence than I can provide at the present time (particularly since I have not read the book in 6 years, but I will correct that.) I also learned about the Western chauvinism that leads people to paint "primitive cultures" as "Stone Age" and not as "Contemporary."
Anyhow, buy the darn book, people. Maybe you can learn something. Or if you are going to UVA, take his class. He's a great professor. Yeah, I slept through quite a bit of his lectures, but he always managed to wake me up when he started to get angry at the injustices of the world and then he would start to curse and rant and yell. Dang, I would think. This prof really believes in his stuff. He's passionate for one thing, and I think that's a good thing in a professor, a writer, and a thinker.
Book Description
Nationalist movements in Scotland and Quebec are enjoying a resurgence. Hierarchies of Belonging explores the construction of national identity and nationalism and its effect on how citizens of Scotland and Quebec understand their relationship to the nation and the state. Ailsa Henderson analyses each nation's linguistic, racial, cultural, economic, and political diversity within a historical and contemporary context. Challenging the assumption that nationalism in Scotland can be characterized as "civic" in contrast to an "ethnic" model in Quebec, Henderson adopts a more complex model of national identity that distinguishes between nationalistic rhetoric, which is invariably civic in form, and public understandings of belonging, which tend to rely on ethnic markers. In Hierarchies of Belonging she demonstrates that nationalist rhetoric and a sense of belonging affect how citizens feel about the state, the nation, and each other.

This is an attempt to understand Mexico's steep descent into turmoil, which happened rapidly after the uprising in Chiapas on New Year's Day 1994. Following the assassinations of a presidential candidate and then the congressional leader, President Carlos Salinas de Gortari had barely left office when the peso collapsed. Pursued by allegations of corruption, Salinas then fled the country. Oppenheimer, a reporter for The Miami Herald, argues that the crisis is the result of nothing grander than a turf war within a decrepit ruling party and that the Chiapas uprising is not something new, just another eruption of the Marxist intellectualism that has long flourished in Latin America.

Should be required reading.......2003-05-04
This book is so shocking, it left me hoping the author made it all up. It raises many important questions regarding the US relationship with out southern neighbor. A must read.
GOOD HISTORY, WELL RESEARCHED, FAST PACED READ.......2003-04-12
In Bordering on Chaos, Oppenheimer does a very good job of depicting the events and digging up the dirty that led to many of the most important events in mid-1990s Mexico, including the murder of the leading presidential candidate, the rise of the Zapatistas and the choice of Zedillo for president.
However, instead of pure history, we are presented with deep character development for the two main actors in this process, Zedillo himself (the president to be) and Subcomandante Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista movement. In this process, we learn of the political ploys adopted by the PRI, the almost monarchic party that led the country for most of the century. These include forays into education, health, and the most important social services. Another important area is the corruption going on at the top levels of the PRI, requiring, for example, that business people contribute a minimum of [several] million to participate in the government, or else be excluded, with all that it entailed. There is less than I would like to know on Carlos Salinas, the now disgraced but formerly darling leader.
Overall, a good history and a well written book. If you have an interest in Mexico, or in the crisis period of the mid-1990s, this may offer some of the pieces that build up a puzzle of it.
Facinating account.......2001-12-14
This is a great read for anyone wanting to know about Mexico during the 1990s. It's very indepth, at times it feels like maybe Oppenheimer doesn't have all the information to tell the story, but he sure tells a lot of it. It's also not overly biased, like many books about recent Mexican history. Oppenheimer does a great job of setting the scene, explaining who is who, and helping the reader get their arms around all the different factions that make for a volatile social environment in Mexico. I also read "Castro's Final Hour" which was informative, but not as good (especially since the "final hour" was somewhere in the early nineties, and now it's 2001). I'd love to read more of Oppenheimer.
Andresito has excellent contacts.......2001-02-17
Excellent book on recent Mexican history.
Excellent. Give Us More........2000-12-07
The dearth of good books on Mexico makes this one very welcome. It's architecture rests largely on two character portraits: one of Ernesto Zedillo, and the other of the man who calls himself Subcommander Marcos. There is some sketchy material, too, on Carlos Salinas, but it's the type of data that adds to the enigma of the man rather than to our understanding of him.
With Zedillo, one can see why two huge accomplishments coincided with his term in office, and went largely unlauded: 1) the payback of the bailout money ahead of time, and 2) the holding of real elections.
Oppenheimer shows Zedillo to be honest and smart--unlike many Mexican politicians, his degree from an Ivy League school was not just window dressing; he really is a trained economist. But he was not very popular. As an uncorruptible technocrat, he never would have gotten the nod to be the new president if not for the assassination of Colosio, whose campaign manager he was at the time of the murder. But once he was thrust in by Fate to the number one spot, he proved unusually effective. He was not fashionable or charismatic, and not very well loved by the electorate, which understandably blamed him for the devaluation which occurred at the very beginning of his term. Carlos Salinas was fashionable and charismatic, and there can be little doubt that the conditions necessitating the devaluation accumulated during his term.
Even now, with Zedillo gone, those two accomplishments loom over the future more powerfully than anything else that has happened in Mexico for many years. The payback of the bailout money signals that though there may be stumbles on the way to free trade with the US, a quick recovery is possible instead of a long Japanese-style tailspin. The bailout money could have gone into the pockets of well-placed Mexicans, (where now are the millions that the World Bank poured into Russia?) but it did not. I would guess that a lot of credit for that goes to the unfashionably honest Zedillo.
The conversion to a truly multiparty system where it is possible for anyone to win also bodes well for the future, both economically and culturally. Mexico could have started having real elections a long time ago, elections that were more than just costly and showy formalities, but it did not. They didn't have a real election until it was time to replace Zedillo. The irony is that a corrupt system put into power an honest man, who then reformed it.
The other character that makes this book work is Rafael Guillen, AKA Subcommander Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista uprising, who turns out to be neither an Indian nor a peasant nor even a native of Chiapas, but simply a garden variety marxist from a middle class family in Tampico. An undereducated and underworked lout, he acquired a degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico with a dissertation on capitalist oppression (what else?). Employing in this dissertation a style reminiscent of the Unabomber, he revealed the family to be the first "unit of oppression", followed by schools, the second "unit of oppression", and so on. The only thing that can break this ubiquitous oppression, according to the budding Subcommander, is "proletarian politics".
Oppenheimer doesn't go into how this ideological huckster managed to convince the peasants of Chiapas he could help them--that would be an excellent and highly entertaining book in itself--, but he does show clearly what type of person cooked up the rebellion, which did no good for anyone. In short, it was the kind of person without enough sense to use something other than a ski mask (wool?) to disguise himself in the tropics.
By making plain the character of these two men, Oppenheimer adds much to our understanding of what has gone on in Mexico in the last few years. Still, much goes unanswered, such as the actual legality or illegality of the billionaires' banquet, where each of thirty rich men pledged $25 million to the PRI for the election of 1994. Oppenheimer tells of what a scandal there was when the publication El Economista broke the story, but doesn't say whether anyone was prosecuted or even had in fact broken the law. The implication of the secrecy of the banquet and the subsequent scandal, is that there are legal limits on campaign contributions in Mexico, as there are in the US. I'm not sure this is the case.
If in fact there are no legal limits, it becomes a question of whether Mexicans in general disapproved of their richest compatriots throwing their financial weight around. It's to Oppenheimer's credit that he notes the alternative to wealthy men giving dizzying sums to the PRI, which is the Mexican government giving dizzying sums to the PRI, which is the way it had been done since the Revolution.
Frankly, if I were a Mexican taxpayer, I'd rather the PRI got its money from the billionaires.

Could have been better........2003-07-06
As a member of the American Coaster Enthusiasts, this was the first book I ever bought purely on roller coasters. It tells a fairly accurate history of the roller coaster and, state by state, lists the major coasters (at the time it was published) in the United States. I was disappointed that some of the smaller parks and their coasters were left out. But overall a fairly good book for the coaster enthusiast.

Book Description
What is America? It’s Monopoly and Mickey Mouse, but also Sinatra and Fred Astaire. It’s the Declaration of Independence, but it’s also Barbie and Playboy, Winslow Homer and Rudi Gernreich’s topless bathing suit. This juxtaposition of images reflects America’s unique eclecticism, and the unprecedented influence that the images of America’s pop culture have had on the world. This book works as a great treasury of Americana, and as a mischievously enjoyable observation on all things truly American. Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and famous adman George Lois have crafted an enlightening book, searching American history to find over 350 people, symbols, and things of import. Their iconic and iconoclastic choices are entertainingly presented through surprising visual juxtapositions. Inspired by Tommy Hilfiger’s passion for Americana and George Lois’ wit, Iconic America dramatizes the national ethos, and makes us think about who we are and what we stand for, with humor and charm.

Book Description
Reviews of the first edition: "The definitive guidebook...recommended"-Booklist/RBB; "fascinating"-American Libraries.
From the wildest white-knuckle thriller to the tamest kiddie ride, roller coasters continue to enthrall amusement-seekers of all ages. This second edition of the authoritative guide to America and Canada's coasters includes twice as many roller coasters as the first edition in over 100 parks. The state-by-state listing of amusement and theme parks includes phone numbers and addresses, as well as numerous photographs of the rides that make children laugh and grown men cry. Also included is the often surprising history of these remarkable rides, along with information on the great coaster designers who bring these monsters to life. A chronology of wooden coasters still in operation ranges from the historic attractions built at the turn of the century to the high-tech rides set to open in 2000. There is also statistical information on the longest coasters, the numbers of steel and wooden coasters in each state, and other fun facts to delight any thrill seeker with a need for speed.
Customer Reviews:
The Ultimate Coaster Reference.......2001-02-18
This book is an exhaustive listing of the roller coasters in the United States as well as Canada. It includes a 35 page history of the roller coaster from its earliest ice slide beginings to present steel and wooden coasters. All of the pictures in this book are black and white; most aren't anything spectacular. Also included are short coaster designer profiles, coaster record breakers, a coaster census by state/province, and a chronology of wooden coasters in operation. This book lists the coasters in alphabetical order by state/province and then by park.
Overall, this book is a dissapointment for its price. If you are a major coaster fan and you have the money it is a worthwhile purchase. It is an excellent reference with an interesting history, ect. It is also current to the year 2000. If your looking for an interesting roller coaster book with excellent color photographs check out The American Roller Coaster by Scott Rutherford.
This Book was crazy awesome........2001-02-05
If you did not like this book than you are no true coaster fan. It gives a great and complete listing of all the roler coasters in the U.S. and Canada uop until the year 2000. I am a roller coaster addict so I can tell you that he made 2 tiny errors. Otherwise the book is absoulutely wonderful. A must buy.
NOT WORTH THE CASH.......2000-12-09
THIS BOOK IS ONLY WORTH ABOUT $15. IT INCLUDES SMALL PAGES WITH LARGE TYPE AND ONLY LOW QUALITY BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS. I OWN ROLLER COASTERS BY DAVID BENNETT. IT IS A MUCH BETTER DEAL, ABOUT TWICE THE SIZE OF THIS WITH COLOR PHOTOS TO GO WITH EVERY DESCRIPTION. CHECK IT OUT INSTEAD. IF YOU ARE STILL SET ON BUYING THIS IT IS AVAILABLE AT WWW.BN.COM FOR $29.95
Superb, authoritative, comprehensive history & presentation........2000-09-04
This newly revised and expanded survey of roller coasters in the U.S. and Canada includes twice as many roller coasters as the original edition, providing a state-by-state listing of amusement and theme parks and photos of their featured rides and their history. Add black and white photos and an overall review of coaster history and you have an involving, fine title.
A Must-Have for Roller coaster lovers!.......2000-08-26
This is a great gift for the roller coaster lover in your life. They will love it with its many photos, descriptions and other information that is very useful to those who love these rides that make us scream, laugh, cry, and throw up. They will spend hours with this book reading it, and looking it over.

Good combo with other book.......2007-05-19
I used this book as a secondary book, to review my knowledge 2 days before the exam, I pass the test with the help from newhorizon, ALL-IN-ONE and this book.
In my opinion, this book is written very well with easy to understand writing style as well, the explanations are very concise and clear.
I will give 5 stars if this book has better practice exams, the questions presented by this book are not enough and mostly just require you to memorize the material in order to answer that correctly instead of fully understanding that.
Another thing that bothered me was a question on how to remove broadcast storm, the answer from this book is by creating vlan, I think that the one that remove broadcast storm is STP (correct me if i am wrong) and moreover the author didn't mention anything about broadcast storm in his discussion about switch.
The other things are just good, I would recommend everyone to use this book combined WITH OTHER BOOK as well.
quick baseline book.......2005-09-11
This is an easy book to read to get a baseline 60% of what you need to pass Security+. I passed the 100 question Security+ test today. I recommend this cost effective book to start. My most valuable assets were measureup.com and filling in the holes of my knowledge with up date material and research. I dont think there is a two book set to help you pass this test. Spend your money on transcenders and measureup and fill in from there.
Author's rebuttle to D. Duffy.......2005-03-07
I beg to differ with the review posted on 11/13/2004 from a D. Duffy. I am the author of the Security+ Fast Pass book. I have reviewed the content and double checked my original sources, the sources listed by D. Duffy, and a few additional sources. The information about asymmetric cryptography and public key cryptography in the Security+ Fast Pass book is correct and in-line with all widely recognized and authoritative texts on the subject.
If by "wrong" D. Duffy means that I did not fully explain the entire concept nor went into mathematical detail about the algorithms involved or the software code used for implementation - then I didn't. This book is about learning the facts and details related to the Security+ exam. While some background and supporting documentation is needed in general and is provided in this text, the book's design purposely focuses only on the material essential for the exam.
I would like D. Duffy to respond to me directly the contact or support links at www.sybex.com. Please indicate exactly what you find incorrect and where you have found contradictory data. Please provide page numbers and ISBNs.
Thank you.

I passed the test with a 836. This is midway between the passing cutoff (764) and the maximum score (900).
I used FastPass as a quick review before taking the test. If you are new to InfoSec, as I was, read a full study guide first.
The one I used was "Security+ Study Guide, 2nd Edition" published by Sybex 2004, ISBN 0-7821-4350-4. This book is on CompTIA's Authorized Quality Curriculum list for this test and it deserves to be.
If you are a seasoned InfoSec pro FastPass may be all you need to pass the test. One caution: FastPass gets asymmetric cryptology and public/private keys wrong (the Study Guide gets it right; also goto rsalabs.com and click Crypto FAQ).
Read my Amazon review on the "Security+ Study Guide, 2nd Edition" mentioned above.
