"Funny, I don't feel like a legend."
-- Barbra Streisand

She is a one-name legend, a global icon, the ultimate diva. Yet most of what we know about Barbra Joan Streisand is the stuff of caricature: the Brooklyn girl made good, the ugly duckling who blossomed into a modern-day Nefertiti, the political dilettante driving to the barricades in her Rolls-Royce, the Oscar-winning actress and bona fide movie mogul, the greatest female singer who ever lived, a skinflint, a philanthropist, a connoisseur and a barbarian, the woman whose physical characteristics are instantly identifiable around the planet -- the tapered nails, those slightly crossed eyes, that nose, the voice.

Even to the multitudes around the world who idolize her, Streisand remains aloof, unknowable, tantalizingly beyond reach. Until now. In the manner of his #l New York Times bestsellers The Day Diana Died and The Day John Died as well as Jack and Jackie, Jackie After Jack, An Affair to Remember, and Sweet Caroline, Christopher Andersen taps into important sources -- eyewitnesses to Streisand's remarkable life and career -- to paint a startling portrait of the artist . . . and the woman. Among the revelations:

Whether you love her, hate her, or are simply spellbound by her titanic talent, Barbra is one thing above all others: a true American original.

5 out of 5 stars The Way She Is Lies??.......2007-09-20

is it true that this book is all lies? Like, they got things wrong and the book is all wrong information? I think she is the most stunning, beautiful, gorgeous women there has ever been in this entire world and ever will be. Now thats a title to uphold. Shes simply amazing, although she is a very sad person. she has sad eyes.

2 out of 5 stars A Hard-bound Tabloid Story.......2007-02-12

"Barbra: The Way She Is" isn't a biography so much as a 412-page National Enquirer story, offering more gossip than insight on its subject. The author and his editors don't even bother to check simple facts like who directed "Patton" and what was Jack Nicholson's debut movie, calling into question other assertions Christopher Anderson makes in his book, like all but claiming Streisand had affairs with Bill Clinton and Prince Charles. I'll admit I couldn't put the book down, but when I was done I wished I'd spent my time reading something else.

1 out of 5 stars Barbra.......2007-01-26

This book was boring.
I could not finish it I only read about 25 pages and gave up.
I have read other books by Christopher that were very good but this one just about put me to sleep. I hope Barbra writes her own story real soon I would love to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, behind-the-scenes book.......2006-10-10

Barbra Streisand is one of the most talented women who has ever appeared on the American stage and screen. She is a writer, director, producer, singer, and actress. She is driven to be perfect, and it is interesting to look back at her childhood in this book and find out why. Her beloved father died when she was a baby and she was left with a cold and unsupportive mother and a stepfather who criticized and verbally abused her. She would have been a success in any field that she chose, simply because she was very talented and was determined to be the best at whatever she undertook. That is the positive side of Barbra Streisand, as portrayed in this book. The negative side of her is that she is cold and calculating and looks at others as tools for her to use in order to accomplish her goals. One telling vignette in the book describes her habit of letting others hail a cab and then jumping in ahead of them and leaving them standing on the street. Another is that she would have cast members in her movies fired if they were "too pretty". She is also portayed as being very sexually promiscuous, and totally uncaring about the feelings of the spouses or girlfriends of her lovers. It's difficult to say if all of the stories in this book are true or not but certainly the impression I came away with is that I will continue to enjoy her wonderful singing and acting, but I am grateful not to have any personal dealings with her.

2 out of 5 stars If you are a National Enquirer fan you'll love this.......2007-03-05

I am not a Barbra fanatic, although I have been a fan through the years. We have all heard lots of stories about this woman, many of them unfavorable and unflattering. But this book is a real irritant. Many of the stories in this book sound as if author Christopher Andersen was attached to Barbra's hip, observing her most private moments. Many of the "sources" in this book are not identified, because they "asked to remain anonymous." Uh-huh. Maybe they did -- maybe they don't exist.

Andersen wastes pages describing in minute detail things that most Streisand fans have seen or are already aware of, such as her surprise visit to the set of "Saturday Night Live" when the "Coffee Talk" show was in progress. We do not need to have another viewer repeat what he has seen, but for some reason, Andersen thinks this is fascinating. He also loves putting words I am sure he thinks, hopes, assumes, imagines, and dreams that Streisand might have said. He does not convince me in the least.

He also seems to have it in for Barbra's son, Jason, unable to let a moment go without leaping on to rumors that Jason has AIDS. In my research all I could find were three-year-old unverified "observations." These knife-in-the-back attacks are also page wasters.

He also goes as far to insinuate that Barbra and Bill Clinton were lovers. Show us your proof, Mr. Andersen, please.

This book is a fun read if you love the trash that National Enquirer loves to print. I hope that Barbra will write her own memoirs and set things straight, but even then, as with all stars, there will be worlds of conspiracy theorists who won't believe anything, so, if you want to join that crowd, this book should definitely be on your shelf.

      Book Description

It gathers more spectators on a global basis than any other activity today, yet sport is widely regarded as being outside dominant political and social systems. Varda Burstyn challenges this view, showing not only that sport generates an elitist, masculinist account of power and social order, but that it is central to the constitution of political power in contemporary life.

Burstyn begins by describing the emergence of sport as a masculinist secular religion by the close of the last century. Today, she argues, masculine dominance continues to be constructed and promoted by the multibillion-dollar nexus that has harnessed sport as the consummate sales agent. She goes on to show that the super-aggressive ideal of manhood, as practised, modelled, and animated through the culture of sport, has profound social and political consequences.

Combining some of the best insights of feminist theory with the perspectives of history, political science, economics, psychology, sociology, and cultural criticism, this book brings a new dimension to sport as a subject for serious scholarship.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Magic for whom by whom?.......2003-02-09

I am not sure who wrote the "Editorial Review," but I am certain that he or she really does not know much about Magic and how to teach it. The claim that "Every aspect of 30 tricks - using cards, coins, balls, handkerchiefs, wands, and hats appears clear as day, and broken down" is stretching far more than most Magicians stretch! Granted, the "flowmotion" illustrations are novel in that they show, somewhat, how to get from Point A to Point B to Point C, but, at least for most of the effects, they really don't help the reader all that much.

I am not sure who the intended audience for this book is. Although there are some effects showing a young child, others show an older child or an adolescent, although most have the author doing the "flowmotion" pictures. So, is this a book for everyone? I doubt it.

I think that younger children will have significant difficulty with many of the effects, and much is left out or assumed to be already in the social, if not Magic, repertoire. A reference to an earlier explanation in the book is a glaring problem since the method explained will not be easily modified to the latter effect. Supposedly the very first pages give some basic "sleights" and other secret "moves," but these are poorly taught and really not the best to include in an introduction to Magic. A child or adolescent would have a very difficult time getting the particular "move," and would, therefore, either loudly telegraph it when performing an effect or find the entire project full of frustration.

I think an adult would have an easier time with the book, in general, but he or she would have to be both very smart in the sense of being able to see what the Magical experience ought to look like and very dedicated to practice the effects to obtain a smooth performance. Some of the effects are very good and, when done correctly, offer some very strong Magic. However, they really don't belong in this book because they are quite advanced. Yes, one can learn an advanced effect before some more basic effects, provided one has a very patient and detailed teacher or teaching device. Although the author may be the first, the book is definitely not the second.

There are some good parts to this book, but they are not, in general, the main purpose of the book. In the Introduction, "Ten Reasons to do Magic" is, for my money, the best part of the book, and I assumed the promise of some well-taught Magic. However, there was far more unevenness of effects and significant substitution of glibness for clarity than delivery of good, basic Magical effects that one could learn and perform.

There are some effects which would require the reader to obtain props that are not readily available or easily made. There is also a lack, which seems to be a requirement in many "introduction to Magic books," of how to present the effects other than a descriptive narration or a stunt. Presentation is THE key element of Magical performance, and the use of stories or meaningful patter is absent with most of the effects in this book.

Is the book a total loss? No, in fact, I could see it as a companion text to some formal lessons in Magic, and with a skilled teacher I think this book would rate higher in my estimation. As a teacher of Magic with a library of over 5000 books, I know how difficult it is to write a good or even adequate basic text, but I think this book missed the mark because it doesn't seem to be consistent as to whom it is being pitched. I think the information and what should have been the focus got swept away with the "flowmotion."

PS I also did not notice any effects with hats or wands. Despite the hype in the Editorial Review, I would see those omissions as pluses!

A great book for anyone interested in mazes or puzzles of any kind.Mazes can be found throughout the numerous books on puzzles but also throughout the worlds of art, architecture, history and literature. This book covers a bit of everything from the history that shows mazes appear as far back as 3,600 BC.It's likely that one would find them in any writings , drawings or art in any civilization, religions or structures from the days man first took a tool in his hand. They vary from the simplist to the most complicated and elaborate. Some are as small as a thumbnail while some are acres in size. This book is filled with beautiful photograps of some of the world's most famous mazes as well as drawings of them to solve. The solutions are also included.Another very good feature of the book is that they have come up with a way to 'do' these mazes over and over again. Even if one is not inclined to solve all these maze ;it is still an excellent book to read and enjoy the beauty that has been created in this art form.In addition to the contents of the book, it's physical construction has been well thought out and executed.
A first class book in every way.

4 out of 5 stars my trip into the Secrets of the Maze.......2000-08-10

I have been interested in labyrinths for the past few years. Most of the books I own have black and white images, if that. This book has BEAUTIFUL full-colored images of mazes and labyrinths from all over the world. The type of labyrinths/mazes that you can find photographed include baskets, cathedral floors, lawns/hedges, paintings, mosaics, pottery, rock formations and more. What makes this book so good, is that not only can you get a great image of these works of art, but you can also try to solve them with the provided erasable marker and clear film overlay. This book even shows you some step-by-step instructions on how to try and learn to draw some labyrinths/mazes on your own. I would highly recommend this book to people of all ages. It is also a great starter book for anyone who likes to collect information on labyrinths. I don't think people will be disappointed with this book when they receive it.

Take your pick among 'The World's Trickiest,' 'Most Perplexing,' 'Most Incredible,' 'Greatest,' 'Most Amazing,' 'Most Baffling,' 'Most Challenging,' and 'Best.' Choose from any of the eight, or all eight, and see how you stand up against Charles Barry Townsend-'the Professor of Perplexing Puzzles." 128 pages, 100 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant technical book to read..........2007-04-18

The book is a very good book. The book is written that a novice to Novell can read and understand. It is based around both the new installation of a server, and upgrades all the way from Netware 3, back when Bindery was the in-thing. It definitely shows how benefital the Open Enterprise Server product would be. I highly recommend this book to someone who would like to know more about the new world of Netware networking.

                4 out of 5 stars NetWare + linux.......2005-06-20

There is a culture clash epitomised in the book. Harris directs his writings towards a dyed in the wool NetWare sysadmin, who is now confronted with Novell's new fangled Open Enterprise Server. The Open refers to an amalgam of the closed shop NetWare with the open source world of linux and its various network utilities. More to the point, the Netware sysadmin faces a qualitatively different approach.

So if trepidation is in order, Harris combats it with plenty of details as to how to transition. Not that NetWare is being abandoned, he emphasises. But the positive approach you should take is that your NetWare skillset and marketability can be enhanced by learning about OES and its linux leanings. For example, the book shows how the Apache web server and the Tomcat engine can interact with NetWare. If you do not already know those packages, now you have a context to do so. And outside NetWare, knowing Apache and Tomcat is no bad thing, career-wise.
