Arlen Roth's fantastic telecastic guitar book.......2007-05-24
Arlen Roth's presentation is terrific! The riffs and short intros are easy to play and are re-enforced by the CD tracks. Anybody who loves the Telecaster sound or even Gibson lowlifes will benefit!
Just like old times.......2007-01-07
This book and cd reminds me of learning the guitar as a teenager. Mates sitting around teaching each other different tricks. Thanks Arlen, I am enjoying it hugely.

Great, but incomplete DVD.......2005-08-01
I bought this DVD thinking I wouldn't need to buy the book edition, but apparently that's not the case since they each cover a lot of different ground (or more precisely the book is more about the techniques and licks, the DVD is more about showing the examples and the players). I think it would have been better had the book been obviated by this DVD so there would be no need to buy both.
The actual content of the DVD, however, is great. Arlen covers a lot of different styles with tabbed/notated examples. He starts out simply and thankfully with some rhythm stuff, then he gives more advanced ideas and techniques. A lot of styles/sounds/techniques are covered. Rock is covered lightly, but this definitely goes more into the blues, rockabilly, country and redneck jazz style of tele playing. Arlen also gives some history of the telecaster and the history of some of the telecasters more famous (and skilled) players over the years.
The real gems, however, are the clips of the guest artists like James Burton, Danny Gatton, Jerry Donahue and a few other great players. Their performances aren't transcribed, but they are inspiring. My personal favorite is the clip with Jerry Donahue. He really tears it up in the short clip!
Another nice touch was the performance at the end that featured Arlen's late daughter at 14 years old playing a silver sparkle tele with her dad and his band. Her playing is astounding for any 14 year old girl, and is better than some adults I know. She was truly blossoming into a hell of a female artist. It really shows what a loss her untimely death was.
If you love the "masters of the telecaster" and want an inspiring DVD with a ton of licks to learn on it (and you are an intermediate player), then get this. If you just want as many licks/tips as you can get without any of the frills, get the book.
Change your ability and repetoire overnight.......2003-09-25
I have played for thirty years, and I am primarily a blues and rock player using a Les Paul. My roots are in country folk and blues on an accoustic. I have taught guitar, long ago. Also attended Berklee College of Music briefly. I have played country music from time to time, but it is not my area of musical interest-thus I am a less than a neophyte and it is on this basis you should weigh my review.
I was elated when I went through this book. As background I am a busy professional, and have a son who is learning guitar as well. I regularly buy imported technique magazines in order to continue to grow in my playing. As with any book, you have to be willing to sit down and work through the book. You neednt read music, but exercises are in guitar tablature as well as standard notation.
Heres the great stuff:
CUTS TO THE CHASE!
Lessons are short and achievable. While aimed at the tele, this book would be great for an accoustic player as well. The breadth of technique and style are excellent, from country to bluegrass, to soul, and rock to blues. Everything is universal in terms of using it without a tele-but, the 'quirks' of a Tele and its design are addressed in technique pointers-cool.
Roth's exercises teach great fundamental licks ( 'cowboy chords' in the first three frets) to slick stuff (up and down the neck like the 'gods'), combined with technique-something that makes a player feel like they have accomplished something right away and which is usable in playing with others. Simple exercises often have a slightly different finger technique to work on.
Guaranteed to help you find the groove, and to help you to grasp more sophisticated techniques. This book can take a player outside of whatever box or rut he/she may be in. It offers fun, and yet can be a great exercise in precision as well. Much of the exercise 'stuff' you have heard,...now try to play it,....now try to play it perfectly.....
Offers a window into the Kingdom of Tele, and perhaps genres outside your world, or, a more in depth glimpse.
This is one of the best and most easily digestable books I have ever found. Period. A beginner will be able to use it-you must have the CD's that accompany it, and use them side by side.
Drawbacks: the previous reviewers have noted that the book's binding and CD tracks are a bit less than perfect. These are valid observations-nothing that is a problem-IMHO-use it, by the time it falls apart you will be a better player-and for the ...retentive-have it three hole punched or whatever-to its credit the cds are each stored in a divided plastic sleeve desinged to protect each of the CDs from paper scratches. The CD index is in the book, (and only in the book) and up to 4 exercises are in each track-I found this to be a minor issue. I can find each exercise with minimal hassle.
Roth's Tele insight is great for the novice-a breadth with moderate depth-an overall roadmap to Teledom. The comments about the text not having the best 'sparkle' are well taken, but it is more of a technique book than a history. I found the insights into players and other areas great because they were short. For its retail price it could have more color photos and be more "ergonomic" in layout, etc. as observed.
As a guitar geek regarding Les Pauls, thier history, construction, and specs, this is not Tele techno minutia-there are other sources-and-this can be a blessing to the non-geek.
Would buy it again and will probably give several copies to my guitar playing friends and family-it is a formula for success for all but the totally unmotivated player. I wish this had been out when I started playing, its an entire 'goody box' to add to your guitar "bag of tricks".
Chicken Pickin' Good.......2003-01-13
It's an odd thing that a certain way of playing has evolved for one model of electric guitar, but with the Fender Telecaster, one absolutely has. Broken down to its fundamental bits, the Telecaster is 95% the same as its fancy sister, the Stratocaster (in the most brutal analysis, functionally a Stratocaster is just a Telecaster with some extra woodwork and a couple more gizmos on the front), but, while the style and approach to playing a Stratocaster is interchangeable enough with that of most other electric guitars, you can't just pick up a Telecaster and play it the same way. To get the best out of a Telecaster you almost have to re-learn the guitar. This is not just a case of tone or sound - it's actual execution.
If you want to do that, then this is the book for you. Arlen Roth is one of the best known Tele session men in the business, and while he's no Byron or Keats, the explanations are simple enough to follow, and the exercises (there are hundreds of them so do not fret (har har) that you'll run out any time soon) are great mix - some challenging, some easy, but most importantly all authentic sounding. You don't need to get far into this book to be learning useful stuff which will expand your tonal palette for good.
For some reason, Telecaster playing has developed in a different direction to "normal" guitar playing, and dipping into this book gives you another direction to explore. It does require your own application of course - more application than I can easily be bothered mustering, so I think this book will be dipped into every now and then rather than worn out cover to cover. That's a criticism of me, not the book, of course.
Nitpicks: the CD track numbering doesn't match the exercise numbers. This seems to me to be an elementary mistake, and it means that tracking down the CD part for, say, Exercise 104 (Elvis's Mystery Train - practically the first thing I did when I opened the package from Amazon) - is hard. Also the book won't (without massacring the spine) stay open when you try to play along with an exercise.
The book also includes a brief history of the Telecaster and a few photos, but neither the photos (included mostly to show off Roth's collection, I suspect) nor the history are really much chop and I certainly wouldn't recommend the book for these alone. It's a fairly cheaply produced and printed edition, but the value of the advice in it alone justifies the price.

Customer Reviews:
This book is a gem!!.......2004-12-01
This book is much better than I expected. After seeing all the nice stories and great pictures, it's clear that NBC has been in front of my life more than I realized. I highly recommend this book.
NBC Lite.......2003-03-08
If you're looking for a big, happy coffee table book about what a terrific network NBC is, "Brought to You in Living Color" will meet your needs. If, however, you're expecting actual information (ratings? dates? a comprehensive list of shows? interviews?), as I was, this content-starved book will only make you shake your fist and curse the all-powerful National Broadcasting Network. It's as if the NBC publicity department is offering you a big bowl of jellybeans ... colorful and tempting, to be sure, but ultimately unsatisfying.
Elegant book.......2002-04-13
Leafing through this gorgeous volume brought back so many memories, I had to buy it. Chico and the Man, Jane Pauley on The Today Show, The Gong Show, Willard Scott with his toupee, Johnny Carson, John Belushi, the Olympics (with Ali bravely holding the torch). Your don't realize how much influence NBC has had in our lives -- making us better at our jobs, making us laugh, exposing us to new places and idea. There's great stuff on new shows as well -- West Wing, Law & Order, etc. Definitely worthwhile for the nostalgia and pictures -- it's quite beautiful book.
A New History of American Culture.......2002-04-11
Brought to You in Living Color: 75 Years of Great Moments in Television and Radio from NBC
BROUGHT TO YOU IN LIVING COLOR is a wealth of knowledge on and about the history of NBC, which is also at once a history of network programming on television and modern entertainment itself. More importantly, Brought to You in Living Color, is everybody's book as it reads like a biography, a tightly researched work of non-fiction, and a memoir as it relays many facts and anectdotes (both funny and touching) about many of the milestones in television.
The book spans from the early days of radio to the current shows on NBC. While telling the story of the network, the book narrates what will likely be the most relevant social history of 20th century America. I strongly recommend this for your personal library, coffee table, or as a gift.
A fantastic retrospective for media fans!.......2002-04-11
This is the definitive look at what NBC has done, and it's all here, from Today to Tonight, and literally everything in between. Whether you're a couch potato or a student of the medium, this is "must" reading!

Dark Shadows Almanac: Millennium Edition.......2006-02-25
I can't say enough about this thoroughly written and researched almanac. As a young child, I watched Dark Shadows and became a fan, although I didn't always follow the plot. It left such a deep impression on me that when our local PBS station aired episodes in the mid to late 1980's, I became an avid viewer. After PBS stopped airing the serial, I thought all was lost. I've been renting the DVD's and this Almanac has been invaluable to me. It's filled with the history of the show and it's many actors. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of this series!!! It's a must buy!
Interesting!.......2005-10-30
I found this book to be very interesting with lots of trivia and tid bits about the show, its creator and its actors. It also contains many pictures of its cast over the years. I highly recommend this book to any Dark Shadows fan!
A Must-Have for any fan of Dark Shadows!.......2003-02-03
When I was a young lad, I used to run home from school to watch Dark Shadows, that most excellent Gothic horror television program that ran from 1966-1971. Though the show has been off the air for many years, I never forgot my fondness for the show. Now that it is available on tape and DVD, I am back into it. My pleasure was made complete when I got a hold of a copy of this book.
This book contains everything I could want: interviews, pictures of the cast and settings, a list of characters, a list of actors, a list of storylines, a timeline of the story, a timeline of the show itself, and so much more! I would love to list everything that is in this book, but it would take me far too long! Suffice it to say, this is a great book, and a Must-Have for any fan of Dark Shadows!
4 1/2 !! Perfect when paired with "Dark Shadows Memories"!.......2002-06-05
I'm relatively a newcomer to "Dark Shadows," fell in love with it from the start, and have been catching the episodes on the Sci-Fi Channel ever since. It was wonderful to learn about the history of the show from these two books. The technical aspects of the show fascinate me, and much info is supplied on how the show was made, etc. There are character/actor lists and descriptions, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, tons of interesting trivia, bloopers list (it's fun to see the mishaps that happen on camera - the show was done live-on-tape...), some great photos, and all kinds of interesting info on the show...
Any "Dark Shadows" fan would enjoy this book, as well as "Dark Shadows Memories" which provides a complete episode list and lots more memories from several members of the cast.
It's awesome that original actors from the show, such as Kathryn Leigh Scott and Lara Parker, put together these books on "Dark Shadows" - it makes them that much better! :)
Great reference book for fans!.......2001-12-07
I bought this book over a year ago and still find myself going back to it again and again, uncovering an interesting tidbit I hadn't noticed before. You'll find a lot of things in here.If you consider DS to be the coolest, this book will knock you out!

Cisco Wireless LAN Security is an in-depth guide to wireless LAN technology and security, introducing the key aspects of 802.11 security by illustrating major wireless LAN (WLAN) standards that can protect the entire network. Because a WLAN is less effective as an isolated piece of the network, this book emphasizes how to effectively integrate WLAN devices into the wired network while maintaining maximum security.
Cisco Wireless LAN Security covers the spectrum of WLAN security, including protocols and specifications, vulnerabilities and threats, and, especially, deployment patterns and design guidelines. With a unique combination of theory and practice, this book addresses fundamental wireless concepts, such as WEP, and innovations, such as EAP, switching, and management. Each chapter includes detailed illustrations, checklists, design templates, and other resources. You will also find generic wireless deployment patterns based on real-world customer installations and functional examples of architecture, design, and best practices.
Whether you currently design, configure, implement, and maintain WLANs or simply want to explore wireless security issues, Cisco Wireless LAN Security has everything you need to understand how to create a seamlessly secure, impenetrable 802.11 network.
This book is part of the Networking Technology Series from Cisco Press, which offers networking professionals valuable information for constructing efficient networks, understanding new technologies, and building successful careers.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource for Any WLAN Administrators.......2006-06-19
The four authors of Cisco Wireless LAN Security do an excellent job of striking a balance between writing concise enough that the book is not overwhelming, but detailed enough for the reader to truly understand the subject matter. Not an easy task.
The book is titled Cisco Wireless LAN Security, which might actually make some people shy away from it, but the Cisco part is a bit of a misnomer. Some of the information and examples are Cisco-centric, but the majority of the information in the book is vendor-neutral and should be understood and applied on just about any wireless network.
The beginning chapters provide an excellent framework for those new to wireless LAN technology, but it quickly moves beyond that to much deeper and more complex subjects within wireless LAN security.
The discussion of wireless vulnerabilities and on wireless security techniques helps you gain an understanding that you can take away from the book and apply to your unique situation. The configuration samples and examples throughout the book are excellent.
I don't recommend that someone new to wireless networks pick this up, but anyone tasked with protecting or securing a wireless LAN should definitely use this book as a resource.
how to bolt down your wireless LAN.......2006-05-30
The title explicitly says Cisco, and indeed there is a lot of material enclosed that is specific to how Cisco implements its wireless routers. But you could plausibly also use this book as a good guideline to general purpose wireless security.
The authors have gone to some length to explain the general principles of 802.11*. In and of itself, this will be useful to some readers, for 802.11 is now a huge set of complex standards. With the official documentation being quite turgid prose, though necessary of course. For clarity, this book is a good and far more understandable alternative.
The text also goes into associated topics, like the encryption protocols associated with 802.11. Plus, and this is important, it describes third party, often open source, tools that can be used to sniff for insecure networks. Tools like Kismet or Wellenreiter, where the latter is meant for wardriving. One of the first things you should do is download and use one of these tools [or even several of them] against your wireless net, if it is already running. Better that you discover any weaknesses in it, than others do so.
Great addition to the official CWSP study guide.......2006-03-29
For many people, it is very difficult to get your hands on enterprise-class wireless equipment to prepare for the CWNA and CWSP exams. The good news it, this book gives you a "virtual" experience with Cisco hardware capabilities. However, don't let the title fool you, this is a great reference on wireless security in general. The most "Cisco-specific" chapter is chapter 9, "SWAN: End-to-End Security Deployment" and this chapter is only 20 pages long.
Even if you're not planning to sit the CWSP exam, I would have this book and the official CWSP study guide by McGraw-Hill sitting on my shelf. These are definately 5-star books.
Title may be misleading... .......2005-10-10
OK, the title does indeed tell a great deal about this particular book: However, the "Cisco" tag may be misleading. Cisco WLAN Equipment and even some terminology is used throughout this text. With a Vendor's badge on the cover and name in the title it prepared me for an extremely biased volume of configurations and presentations on Cisco specific technology. This text greatly exceeded a book with that good but narrower approach. A great plus of this particular text is the detail it provides on technology and design criteria which is applicable to WLAN security regardless of technology vendor. It has taken the place of my best vendor agnostic text as the first reference I grab.
Kirshna, Sri, Andrew, and Darrin have delivered the subtitle "Expert guidance for securing your 802.11 networks" in 13 chapters. Vast majority of their 395 pages of text and diagrams are not only applicable but extremely valuable to anyone charged with designing, implementing, and administrating WLANs in today's security conscious environment.
Guidance on secure WLAN design is far more than delivery of some cookie cutter equipment configs. The authors obviously recognized this and exceeded this reader's expectation. Their guidance was achieved by delivering sufficient detail on all the technologies and interdependencies that are required to deliver WLAN Security. They did not pave a single configuration which would have had too narrow an audience. They provided the foundation which enables, even seasoned WLAN engineers, to deliver for a wide variety of business requirements.
My copy has loads of dog-eared pages. Those pages mark specific paragraphs which have been very valuable in customer and support organization presentations.
If you're interested in designing secure WLAN which fits your customer's needs and performs well.
Then, you should pick up a copy of this text.
I'm looking for an update from these guys which includes some of the additional features and functions available in the latest "Cisco" WLAN technologies from both Aironet and Airespace teams.
Great book for a WLAN designer, implementor, operator, or manager of any of those resources.
Good treatment of the topic on Wireless LAN Security.......2005-07-21
The title is definitely in alignment with the content. A basic-to-intermediate discussion of security, as it applies to wireless LANs, is presented in this book. When I completed the book, I certainly had a much better understanding of wireless LAN security fundamentals - both generically and with a Cisco slant. The book has contributions from 4 persons, which may explain the healthy perspective given to the subject of wireless LAN security.
I know the number of chapters of a book can't always tell much of the story, but in the case of the 13 chapters contained in this book - spread out over almost 400 pages - I immediately felt that no single chapter would contain an amount of information that may be overwhelming as far as being able to retain my focus. The 2 final chapters comprised the greatest number of pages for any single chapter, and rightfully so. It would have been a compromise of the completion of the overall material to have limited the number of pages involving configuration examples and deployment scenarios.
I really appreciated chapter 2. This chapter was titled "Basic Security Mechanics and Mechanisms", and the content was just as the title suggested. The subject matter discussed security without any connection to wireless LANs. With "Security" being a complete topic all by itself, it was beneficial to have a little introduction to some generic security fundamentals before blending this topic with wireless networking. If the subject of computer/network security is not your forte, then you'll be served well with this brief exposure.
Chapters 3 and 4 were a welcomed addition because they provided a "warm-up" to wireless networking. The authors, in my opinion, did a very good job in not assuming that the reader would be a seasoned veteran of wireless networking. With chapters 2, 3 and 4 leading the way, the groundwork was set for a solid comprehension for the remainder of the book.
So, it is in chapter 5 -- "WLAN Basic Authentication and Privacy Methods" -- where the discussion of security for wireless LANs really begins. Once again, the title of the chapter is in sync with the content. What's provided is some light exposure to security methods. The information in the previous chapters really help to digest this chapter's material. This chapter is one of the "key" chapters in the book's presentation of wireless LAN security; the foundation to the discussion of wireless LAN security begins here.
The remaining chapters up to chapter 11 contained more in-depth discussion of security in the wireless LAN. I was pleased to see a discussion on the Wireless Domain Services (WDS), Wireless LAN Solution Engine, and Cisco Structured Wireless Aware Network (SWAN). While there's plenty of information at Cisco's website regarding these mechanisms, including the information in the context of the book content enhanced my understanding.
I don't believe this is a book that is intended to prepare for any Cisco-related certification; not that that was suggested anywhere to begin with. However, the reason for my comment is because there are none of the traditional questions at the end of each chapter to test chapter comprehension. So, if you want to test your understanding or memory, you'll have to create your own questions as your read through each chapter.
There will be a number of terms that may be unfamiliar to some readers, so I'll encourage you to note those as you read each chapter. The book contains no glossary for you to reference terms -- all nice and neat, in alphabetical order.
The book is for someone with at least a Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCCNA)-level of knowledge. Certainly if the reader has a fair understanding of wireless networking, the focus can be exclusively placed on wireless LAN security. I would not recommend this book as a first-read to someone who doesn't have an understanding of wireless networking -- unless they're going to read only chapters 3 and 4. Again, chapters 3 and 4 are very good for a first exposure to wireless LAN theory.
Using a rating scale of 1 to 5 (with 1 being the worst, and 5 being the best) I'd give the book a rating of 5. Even with the fast evolution of wireless networking technology, and wireless standards being in almost a constant state of flux, I can see how I'd still be able to refer to this book for many months to come.
