Book Description
Not just a look at the art of record cover design
Record covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for - Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground.
In this book, Michael Ochs, owner of one of the largest private collections of record covers in the world, presents a personal selection of the thousand items that mean most to him. This is not just a look at the art of record cover design - the book also offers a fascinating survey of rock music genres and styles from their beginnings to the present day.
Customer Reviews:
Buy It and then Buy It Again.......2007-06-19
As an absolute lover of music, I have come to miss that era of the vinyl album cover, when we rushed to the record store and purchased someone's long awaited first or follow up album. We then rushed home and played it on the old component set while reading the liner notes on the back of the album. This book reminded me of that time and many pages were a nice walk down memory lane for this music lover. I guess if I had a complaint, perhaps the authors could have divided the book up into genres as opposed to time period. It would have been nice to see various R&B, Country, Blues, Rock, Disco albums.
I will say this, when I saw it in the store- I bought all five copies and then used them for eventual gifts to people. Everytime, I have given one away, it was a hit because everyone is some form of a music lover and everyone can appreciate the vinyl era. Buy this and then buy it again.... for someone else.
Great book, better deal .......2006-01-02
This is really a great book for those who miss the great art we used to get with vinyl albums. Unfortunately, I just purchased this book on vacation, at the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas for $40! And my book wasn't hardcover! I should have come home and looked for it on Amazon. Now I know that Amazon is the place for great deals.
only Anglo-Saxon.......2005-12-25
This book offers a well-chosen collection of record-covers. Dating from an era when music was for sale on a vinyl-LP, thus offering plenty of surface on its sleeve.
The choice by Michael Ochs and Taschen is almost entirely Anglo-Saxon. Pretty one-sided, I think, for countries like Poland and Japan also have their reputation in record-sleeve design.
With these restrictions '1000 Record Covers' make a fine book, offering us several trends. In the Fifties photographers & designers were almost entirely kept unknown, while later on their names emerge better. The Fifties' designers nearly always pictured the recording artist(s), an obligation clearly vanishing in later decades. And from the Fifties on originality in design considerably increases.
That is not to say Fifties-designs are bad: they just focus differently. For instance, Freddie Bell & the Bell Boys, standing around an ice-cream vendor in a sunny New York street, make a great sleeve. And in 1961 we see a most unusual photo of Roy Orbison without his trademark dark glasses.
Of course the Sixties' British Invasion is highly represented here. Right up to the Beatles' famous 'Sgt Pepper'-sleeve from 1967. However, one of the greatest designs from that period is on the 'Who Sell Out'-sleeve from 1967: the four cartoonlike photos + text, one on each member, just don't have their equal in humor and originality. 'The Who Sell Out'-LP also makes a seldom example of sponsoring, by the way. Odorono-deodorant, Heinz Baked Beans and Medac acne-remover not only appear on its sleeve, they are also subject in three of its songs.
The sleeve-designers showed themselves not shy to lend from more reputed artists. We encounter Andy Warhol's banana, Botticelli's and Michelangelo's Venuses, one of Alberto Vargas' semi-nudes, Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte, Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, and a design after American painter Edward Hopper. There is even a photo styled on Manet's famous 1863-painting 'dejeuner sur l'herbe' (= breakfast on the grass), prominently featuring a naked lady.
We all know sex sells. So, not surprisingly, another prominent trend in sleeve-design is an increasing display of female nudity.
It is also often difficult to detect a link between the sleeve-design and the music it represents. Many albums shown here have become obsolete but for their sleeve. And the music-style of still popular albums is often hardly reflected in its sleeve-design. A notable exception on this is made by Roxy Music, whose sleeve-designs invariably are in line with their sophisticated, avant-garde music. In this respect also Slade pops up, prominently & unsubtly pushing thumbs forward. Or the Pretty Things, roughly launching a torpedo from navy patrol boat 102 - Ochs and Taschen granting them a double page.
'1000 Record Covers' also produce a touch of humor. Such as a well-clothed man, paddling a limosine through a canal. Or the hotel chambermaid, preparing a heart-shaped, spike-matrassed bed in the honeymoon-suite: Warner Bros 1984, design Steve Gerdes/Dean Motter, photo by Patrick Harbron.
But...but...but...Vaughan Oliver?.......2004-07-26
As soon as I saw this title, I plonked it onto my amazon wish list, as it combines two of my main passions (music and design). But after flipping through a copy, I had to remove it from my list - maybe if rents plummet and I can afford more space for bookshelves it'll make a reappearance, but until then I'll do without it.
The title - "1000 Record Covers" - at least makes no false claims, e.g. "1000 Great Record Covers", or "1000 Essential Record Covers". However, such a claim is made on the back cover, and I must refute it. Too many of the entries are mediocre, and there are too many masterpieces that are ignored. I would blame this less on the author - all the choices come from his collection, which is by its nature limited - and more on the editors, who should have realized the shortcomings of such a scheme. My personal interest would be in covers from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and I can't forgive the absence of (for starters) Joy Division, Cocteau Twins, Gang of Four, the Slits, Buzzcocks, the Fall, Wire, the Pixies, Eno, Magazine, the Cramps, the Residents, the Pop Group, Pere Ubu, Avengers, Angry Samoans, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Romeo Void, Monochrome Set, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, X-Mal Deutschland, Coil, Chrome, Crass, Delta 5 - all of whom released LPs with compelling cover designs.
Labels such as Z, Dischord, les Disques du Crepescule, Two Tone, Rough Trade, Factory, Postcard, TVT, are virtually or completely ignored, and designers such as Malcolm Garrett (his Duran Duran work doesn't count - not at the expense of "A Different Kind of Tension"), Vaughan Oliver, tomato, Peter Saville (Roxy Music's "Flesh + Blood" gets in, but it's one of Saville's weaker efforts and his name is misspelled!), Barney Bubbles, Neville Brody are similarly slighted.
The book could also use an index of designers.
It may seem like I'm harping on about bands from mainly one genre (punk/new wave/whatever), but the truth of the matter is that much of the really innovative cover design in the last 30 years has come from that area.
To be fair, the book does include covers of LPs by the Dead Kennedys, Clash, XTC, Ramones, Echo & the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Public Image, Patti Smith, Altered Images (yay!), so some credit is certainly due.
Also happy to see the a Soft Machine record in there.
And this book did make me recognize what a subtle piece of work TheCure's "...happily ever after" is.
I'm writing this review not to slag the book off, but to inform people with similar expectations to what I had that while there is a lot of good material in here, there are gaping holes as well. Again, I think the weakness lies in limiting the choices to one person's record collection instead of directing the author to choose from the entire gamut of record covers available to him.
So Many Great Album Covers!.......2004-04-29
Just as the title suggests, this book is full of 1,000 record covers. Full color and in all their glory. Page after page of beautiful, quirky, innovative and just about any other adjective you can think of, album covers. Some will bring back memories, some will make you want to search the record stores so that you can own the album again or for the first time. I keep this book handy and find myself thumbing through it all the time. It's also a great conversation starter when it sits on the coffee table.
My only complaint is that it isn't full record size! That would have sent this review into 7 stars!

Book Description
College students and graduates have fond memories of campus events such as commencement, founder's days, convocations, and baccalaureate. These events, defined as rites of passage, secular ceremonies, or cultural performances, create a special feel to a campus remembered for years to come. Borrowing from interpretive anthropology, the author spotlights the following ideas: culture is revealed and forms of life are expressed through the actions and words of community members; human communities are dynamic, complex, and ever-changing environments revealed though analysis of cultural events; and commonplace rituals and ceremonies play a central role in the cultural work of human meaning. The purpose of the book is to explore campus culture as revealed through rituals and ceremonies. While rituals are unique to each campus, this book discusses higher education ceremonies and traditions and offers explanations about the roles they play in building and maintaining campus culture. Dr. Manning combines educational research methodology, higher education and anthropological theory to vividly describe college rituals. In a readable fashion, case studies describing the rituals are interspersed between chapters discussing the theory of rituals. The cases include convocation, presidential inauguration, junior show, charter day, founder's birthday celebration, baccalaureate, and laurel chain and alumnae parade.

Book Description
Starting on September 10, 1955, and continuing for more than 600 episodes over the next twenty years, Gunsmoke ruled the airwaves. Never in the history of television had a show so captured the hearts of the American public. Each week, Marshal Matt Dillon and his friends would face a new threat to the peace and lawfulness of their frontier home of Dodge City, Kansas. And each week, goodness and determination prevailed. In recognition of this, the show's golden anniversary, author Ben Costello has produced a remarkable testament to the on-screen and off-screen individuals who made the story lines come alive.

How fun would it have been..........2007-05-10
How fun would it have been to have been on the set of this amazing show? This is a great book with a lot of interviews, anecdotes, and pictures. I wish more shows today had the quality of Gunsmoke...maybe I'd watch them more than the Gunsmoke reruns!
Certain to be a popular addition to any community library American Popular Culture collection.......2007-04-07
In "Gunsmoke: An American Institution Celebrating 50 Years of Television's Best Western", author Ben Costello has provided the legions of fans for America's most popular and long-running television western series with an exhaustive compendium showcasing and celebrating all twenty seasons (comprising a total of 635 episodes) of Matt Dillion and his many friends and foes. Profusely illustrated with literally hundreds of photos about what went on both in front and in back of the cameras, "Gunsmoke" covers the major cast members, as well as the producers, writers and directors, and features an especially insightful interviews with Dennis Weaver, Buck Taylor, and Burt Reynolds. There are even sections featuring Dean Martin Celebrity Roast Highlights; reminisces of distinctive guest stars; Gunsmoke memorabilia, the post-television series Gunsmoke films, and so very much more. Certain to be a popular addition to any community library American Popular Culture collection, "Gunsmoke" is a 'must read' for anyone who grew up with Matt Dillion, Miss Kitty, Doc, Chester, Festus, and all the other denizens of Dodge City and the Old West.
Gunsmoke Fan.......2007-01-10
This book is a pleasure to read. The background stories and photos really enhance the episodes presently shown on TV Land cable channel. The volume is both informative and entertaining.
Great book!.......2007-01-03
This about covers every aspect of that 20 year phenomenon "Gunsmoke"The personal insights from everyone associated with that show from the writers to all the great and soon to be great actors. As a die hard fan of this show I was incensed by some of the decisions made by a couple of producers who made I think, some very bad decisions based on personal feelings and insults made to some key actors.
But the bottom line is thats what a good book does.Gets the reader wrapped up in the story and triggers emotions of both good and bad. This book did all of that and if you are like me and still enjoy watching all the re-runs then you should buy this book and put it all in a wonderful perspective..
Now a note to all that stations that are airing these shows:Where are all the black and white episodes?
Wonderful Tribute to THE Classic TV Western!.......2006-04-07
Tons of baby boomers grew up with 'Gunsmoke.' As a youngster I can vividly remember Marshall Dillon stalking through Dodge City's Boot Hill in the show's opening moments, commenting on the tragedies that made up frontier life as mournful music played in the background. As I grew up I and my family were loyal fans, marveling at the wonderful characters and plots presented year after year. 'Gunsmoke' set the standard for TV westerns. Now, at last, it has a proper tribute in Ben Costello's oversized volume dedicated to what he terms 'an American institution.'
This is a great book, well-researched, well-written and well-illustrated. The show and its marvelous cast of characters comes alive again in this warmly affectionate volume. It is a shame someone didn't undertake this years ago when Milburn Stone and Amanda Blake were still with us. And I was disappointed that James Arness apparently chose not to contribute but perhaps he feels he has told his story in his recent autobiography. In any case, we should be grateful for the work Costello did. The book is filled with wonderful reminiscences from so many 'Gunsmoke' alumnus along with tons of photographs. You couldn't ask for a finer tribute!
Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Overpriced, misaligned, bloated + boring = 2 stars.......2006-07-13
I gave this book 2 stars because it's overpriced, misaligned, bloated and quite boring. Lots of time, Kramer used 200 words to explain something when 50 would have been enough. There's alot of minor errors + many cases where the author is completely wrong. The content covers CISA's material but it simply does not match with CISA's domains. If I had to throw a stone to someone, that would be to the editor cos that guy simply did not do his job. There's way too many content errors, spelling mistakes and ambiguous sentences.
To wrap thing up, it's a subpar book with an hefty price tag. I would NOT recommand it to anyone taking an ISACA exam. Your $$$ would be better spent buying the official CRM 2006.
Obtuse and perhaps worthless.......2005-05-13
Why use 1 word when 12 will bewilder the reader and make the book that much thicker. I can not believe that a qualified editor reviewed this book.
The wheat to chaff ratio is horrendous. You can go whole paragraphs without coming upon anything worth knowing.
I can only hope that the actual CISA exam questions are not written as poorly as the sample questions within this book.
If you value your time, do not buy this book.
Don't waste your money.......2005-03-05
I purchased this book -- unfortunately before I read the reviews here -- to prepare for the CISA. Despite the optimistic title, the book fails to deliver in just about every area. The book is not connected to the exam in any logical form or structure. One of the biggest draws for a book like this is the practice test software. Sadly, this book fails yet again. The software works, but the questions in some cases are just plain wrong! I wrote to the editor and they offered me an errata sheet that I could use to spot mistakes in their data???? What good is that? My advice is that you skip this book, avoid this author, and not patronize this publisher since they are not willing to make good on their promises.
CISA Prep Guide, not entirely useless.......2005-02-18
I purchased this guide, after 13 years of practical experience, mainly for the test materials. However, I did attempt to read the book, and must say that it is a chore. The author's style and usage leave much to be desired.
Most troublesome were the obvious inconsistencies within the test materials. The test results showed that answers correctly chosen were often scored as wrong, and some wrongly chosen were often scored as correct. It's as if they updated the software to "mix it up" between revisions, but failed to update the actual answers to correspond with the changes.
I did complain to the publisher and ask for an updated software version, but only received back that they would check with the author. I have since heard nothing. Of course, when you are preparing for a test, the main thing you are looking for in a review system is accuracy ... on this account the book and software fail.
I don't recommend this book if you are seriously considering taking the exam and want to review.
Fire the Editor!.......2004-06-09
I am an IS professional with 25 years of experience but it's been 6 years since I took a certification test. I needed the book to codify what I already knew from experience. I found the actual subject matter of the book to be adequate, but the author often took 500 words to say what could have been said in 50. And then he often said it wrong! And with bad grammer and incomplete sentences. I was as angry at the book editor as I was with the author. I kept thinking that English must not be the author's native language, but even so, the editor didn't do his job. That's probably why an updated version has not been issued. Get a new author! Get a new editor!
The software also was bad. I have used Boson software and tests before and found them very good. The test engine may work great, but if the data is wrong, it doesn't matter how great the engine is.
Bottom line - don't buy this book. Get the ISACA study materials. It'll cost three times a much, but it'll be worth it.

A Great Additional CISA Resource.......2007-07-12
I would recommend this book as it does a good job of covering the topics addressed in the areas required for the exam. The front of the book describes each objective and lists where that information is in the book. It covers the practice areas as laid out for the 2007 exam. I liked the way that several of the larger domains were broken into two chapters. This made it easier to read and retain the information.
ISACA expects candidates to have 5 years of experience. You need to read more than one book on the CISA examination areas to round out your understanding. Don't underestimate the difficulty of this exam.
In many areas ISACA gives review classes that can help supplement the needed knowledge to pass the CISA exam. In the end I attended the review classes, browsed the official text and read this book. In that role this book fit my needs as its much easer to read than the official text. CISA candidates should map out a preparation plan months before the exam and then stick to it. Read this book but also use other materials such as the official questions and answers book and other third party practice exams.
Doesn't map well to exam.......2007-06-11
I am not going to write a detailed review, but hopefully this will be helpful to others. Also note that I haven't read cover-to-cover, but have read a couple hundred pages and have skimmed the entire book.
I sat for the CISA yesterday. I signed up to take the exam and planned to basically take it cold because most of the subject matter I am well versed in. Though, as with any good exam and certification, you had better know what the "BEST" answer is for the scenario presented so I did plan on buying something to read in preparation.
I had forgotten about the exam until 4-days prior so I looked for some type of prep book on Amazon. Not a lot of selection and nothing rated that high. I settled on this and had it overnighted. Due to other factors, I basically had one night to go through this so I concentrated on the areas I needed the most refreshing.
This book did not map at all to the version of the CISA exam I received. Since the exam is a "Choose the BEST answer" type of exam where the possible answers are all correct, I left wondering how I should have answered a few questions. I came home and tried to find answers in this book. None of them were even touched on. Then I spent a couple hours skimming through the book to see how much it mapped to the exam I just took. Some of the content was relevant, but most (90%) of it not. I don't think it would have been very helpful in general.
However, the book is a decent book with some good content. I don't care for the writing style that much or how the book is put together (too many sidebars, notes, etc). It's not a bad reference for auditors in general though.
Bottom line: the CISA exams change frequently and there are different versions for a given cycle as it should be with any good exam. You probably won't find a book that maps well to the exam because of this. There is a reason you need a minimum of 5-years experience to qualify to sit for the exam. There is also a reason as I was standing in line for registration I was listening to people who were on their second, third and fourth tries.
easy exam?! (Too easy?).......2007-05-17
The topics covered by Gregg are a mixture of high level policy management issues and some low level computing material. The latter should be straightforward to anyone starting out as any type of IT professional. As in using ping to measure the latency (or effective network temporal distance) to another internet node. Then we have the groupings of internet subnets into Class A, B or C. And the 5 layers of the internet. I'm glad to see that the text only gives brief mention of the 7 layer OSI model, describing how in practice it is the 5 layers of the internet that is by far the dominant occurrence.
On the most basic material, there is a bare 2 pages that takes the reader from machine language to 5th generation software languages. Admirably concise. But do CISA students really have such a brief background in this?
On other topics, there's some recent material about e-commerce. Good, given the rapid buildout in the last 10 years. So we see various categories, like b2b, b2c, b2g [business to government] and b2e [business to employee - i.e. think portal].
The exercises and questions at the end of each chapter do seem rudimentary. Given that each chapter is rather brief to begin with. A casual parsing of a chapter should suffice in letting many readers get most questions correct without too much sweat. Presumably, Gregg's assessment of the level of difficulty of an actual CISA exam is accurate, and he has thus pitched his questions at a correspondingly suitable level for you. But if this is so, I'm underwhelmed by what it means to be a CISA. A credential that's way too easy to get.
