Book Description

Yash Chopra is one of the most charismatic and powerful directors in the Indian film industry, his name synonymous with the glamour of the romantic film and a style within Indian culture. Spanning four decades, his directed features include some of the classic films of Indian film history such as Deewaar and Kabhi Kabhie. This book discusses his work with the Hindi megastar Amitabh Bachchan in films such as Deewaar, Trishul, Kaala Patthar, and Silsila. Rachel Dwyer shows how Yash Chopra has been a tireless innovator and has changed the look of mainstream cinema.
Dwyer integrates her analysis with information about the man and his work she gleaned from interviews with Yash Chopra, his family, his colleagues, his stars, his contemporaries, and major critics. A unique study of a top contemporary Indian film director, this book also looks at influences on Chopra.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing look at a romantic genius.......2004-04-14

Rachel Dwyer spend many months interviewing Yash Chopra and his circle, accompanying him on film shoots, and meeting his extended family and the crew that has served him so well over many years. In a way, to use White House parlance, she has become "embedded" with her subject, to disappointing results. She seems unable to utter a single negative thing about "Yashji," perhaps due to this artificial, extended closeness, and her critical pronouncements suffer from a similar vagueness of effect. I am left unpersuaded that Yash Chopra's genius lies in his ability to reinvent himself a la Picasso for succeeding generations, or is it that (again like Picasso) he just has stayed around for longer than anybody else? Dwyer is far from helpful--just the reverse. Her book seems designed to confuse and delude the reader. There are several beautiful photographs among the pages, but you could practically visit Bollywood yourself for the price of this insanely overpriced volume. Instead, rent a few of Yash Chopra's movies and you'll feel the difference between a tenuous analysis and a life-changing artistic experience.

At long last, an essay on the politics and poetics of queer disability. Eli Clare, a poet with cerebral palsy, movingly describes her attempt to climb Mount Adams--not, she points out, as a "supercrip," like the boy without hands who bats .486 on his Little League team, but just as an impaired person who loves to hike: a story about ableism rather than disability. Avoiding easy answers and journalistic sunshine, she recounts the story of the fight for disabled access, touching on the history of the freak show. She tracks the origins of her own tenacity and self-knowledge to her rural Oregon upbringing and the conflicting personality of her father--who sexually abused her, but also taught her how to frame a house, how to use a chainsaw. "I think of the words crip, queer, freak, redneck," Clare remarks. "None of these are easy words. They mark the jagged edge between self-hatred and pride, the chasm between how the dominant culture views marginalized peoples and how we view ourselves, the razor between finding home, finding our bodies, and living in exile, living on the metaphoric mountain." --Regina Marler

THE MOUNTAIN

I: A Metaphor

The mountain as metaphor looms large in the lives of marginalized people, people whose bones get crushed in the grind of capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy. How many of us have struggled up the mountain, measured ourselves against the mountain, failed on the mountain, lived in the shadow of the mountain, hit our heads on glass ceilings, tried to climb the class ladder, lost the fight against assimilation, struggled our way toward that phantom called normality?

We hear from the summit that the world is the best from up there. Hear that we are lazy, stupid, weak, ugly, that we live at the bottom precisely because we are those things. We decide to climb that mountain, or make a pact that our children will climb it. The climbing turns out to be unimaginably difficult. We are afraid; every time we look ahead we can find nothing remotely familiar or comfortable. We lose the trail. Our wheelchairs get stuck. We speak the wrong languages with the wrong accents, wear the wrong clothes, carry our bodies the wrong ways, ask the wrong questions, love the wrong people. And it's goddamn lonely up there on the mountain. We decide to stop climbing and build a new house right where we are. Or we decide to climb back down to the people we love where the food, the clothes, the dirt, the sidewalk, the steaming asphalt under our feet, our crutches all feel right. Or we find the path again, decide to continue climbing only to have the very people who told us how wonderful life is at the summit booby trap the trail. They burn the bridge over the impassable canyon. They redraw our topo maps so that we end up walking in circles. They send their goons-those working-class and poor people they employ as their official brutes-to push us over the edge. Maybe we get to the summit but p

5 out of 5 stars Brings the hybridity of living..........2007-09-02

This book was required reading for a class on countering oppressions. It is a beautiful story of the mixity of living with multiple marginalized ways of being in the world. In particular, it relays the story of oppression through looking at embodied ways of existence. What does it mean to live in the world and how do we heal from systems that continually go against the embodied experiences of so many of us. Zi is a powerful author with great descriptive imagery. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars This subject is very important but .......2005-04-06

I did not like her style or her story. It came off like she was upset that her gayness and CP were keeping her from having a purely white, rural life. Also, if you have read in depth about Disability Culture and the freak show, this is just a restating of a lot of excellent articles on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.......2004-12-06

This is an excellent book for disabled queers like myself, and the author, Eli Clare. The book is easily read--Clare uses language that is not pretentious, but establishes a voice that is eloquently compelling. "Exile" masquerades as autobiographical but contains a powerful critique of the social constructions of class, disability, sexuality, race, gender, the environment and just about everything else you could imagine (I know this might seem impossible--but Clare accomplishes it in this wonderful book). I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Invitation into Experience.......2002-02-04

Clare writes her autobiography in word paintings. Clare explores the multiple differences of disability, queerness, transgenderism, abuse, socioeconomic class, and gender with reflection that empowers rather than victimizes or blames. While considering how the history around her has shaped the world and affected who she is, she considers how she has shaped the world. Clare refuses to collapse the intricate complexities of life into something more managable.

1 out of 5 stars a good title..........2001-03-10

I read this book in an 'images of women' course, and i found the title very interesting....but little else. I felt that this book was predictable and, while it contains a nice story, did not relete well to me. It was dense and hard to follow.

1 out of 5 stars No discussion -- just the answers!!!.......2002-12-02

We were so disappointed in this book that we returned it to Amazon. I am an attorney and purchased the book for my gifted 12-year old brother. It was very age-appropriate in terms of level of writing, but the book only gives a sentence or two of the facts of the case......and then just the trial court and appellate court verdicts on separate pages in the back of the book. The book provides no discussion and no explanation at all -- just the court verdicts! Without any knowledge of the law, it will be very boring for most people. (The answers are listed by # in the back of the book, with trial and appellate court decisions on different pages, so looking up the very brief answers also can be a chore.) All in all, very disappointing. Fun idea, poorly implemented. Cannot recommend this book for anyone, of any age or education level.

4 out of 5 stars Great for all ages!.......1999-12-16

I bought this book for my 13 year old because she has become interested in law, but I think my husband and I had more fun with it! Simple to read, easy to understand. Definately a good book for kids!

Filling an important spot in the Wrox Programmer to Programmer series, Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 is an excellent introduction to the new version of ASP released for the Windows 2000 platform. This guide expects no previous ASP knowledge or even previous Web development experience.

Its friendly style makes this book welcome reading at all skill levels. The material is carefully presented to avoid losing readers who are totally new to ASP programming, yet it still provides impressive technical coverage, beginning with the very basic concepts behind ASP programming and moving forward to advanced coding techniques.

As each topic is presented, relevant screen shots and useful code snippets under the heading "How It Works" complement the text. The chapters also include step-by-step exercises to familiarize you with new techniques and tools. An extensive case study application takes you through the entire development process as well. If you're interested in Web coding Microsoft-style, this is the right place to start. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: ASP language fundamentals, server- and client-side scripting, ASP object model, cookies, error handling, scripting objects, recordsets, transactions and COM+, XML introduction, ADO object model, and VBScript reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great ASP book!.......2007-02-05

Beginning Active Server Pages is an all encompassing book on classic ASP web server development. The authors explain in great detail from the beginning on how dynamic web development works. No matter what technology you use (PHP, Coldfusion, JSP), how a web browser requests a page, the web server send the request to the server-side engine and/or does a database request and send the result to the browser. The book assumes no previous knowledge of web development and explains the basics very well so that any reader can start from any skill level.

The beginning of the book discusses what software you will need to get started which basically is either IIS (Internet Information Serve) or PWS (Personal web Server) in a Windows environment. How to install, test and configure the web server is discussed as well as setting up user permissions and virtual directories. This is a great starter to making sure the reader has all the information to get started on creating their first ASP web page.

The author continues explaining basic scripting techniques and language syntax of web scripting (VBScript) and explaining the differences between client and server side scripting and how the IIS engine interprets the request. Also covered early are the intrinsic ASP objects such as Request, Response, Server objects. A good review of some of the basic components of this very robust development technology.

The book then goes into send and receiving data from web forms in showing the reader some very useful but basic examples to get you started. The book covers in the next few chapters (4 - 5), in detail the basics of VBScript language such as variables, operators, strings, arrays, control statements (if, case, loops) and functions. The next chapter (6), goes into the concept of objects, methods, properties and events which explain to the user that almost everything is an object in ASP and the importance of this fact as well. Some OOP concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism are reviewed with some nice examples.

The next two chapters cover many important ASP objects in great detail such as Response, Request, Application, Session, and Cookies. These chapters cover most of the most used objects that will be used in almost any ASP application. When you can master these objects you will have a great understanding of the fundamentals of ASP applications. The authors do a great job of explaining these important topics to the reader that it gives you more motivation to read more and learn more. Unlike other books that try to explain too much and confuse the reader, this book explains just enough in English other than techo-bable.

The rest of the book covers all types of database access using connects, recordsets, cursors, ADO, locking, filtering data, SQL syntax, and much more. Among other topics covered at the end of the book are focusing on advanced topics such as XML, Transactions and COM+.

The book is really all you need to learn and master ASP to develop dynamic web applications for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for bringing you up to speed.......2005-06-24

Prior to purchasing this book I had no experience with ASP whatsoever. One day at work I was told that I needed to study up on ASP, and fast. I didn't really know where to start, but I ended up with this book, and it has been a lifesaver. I took the time to work through the examples in a select few key chapters, and was amazed that after only a couple of days I had developed the skills necessary for basic ASP development.

Now its been a few months, and the book still serves as a useful reference. It is extremely well organized. The examples are basic, but definitely teach the fundamentals needed to become a competent ASP developer. It will not make you an expert, but that's not its purpose anyway. It excels at relating the relevant information in an understandable and easy to learn format. For me to be developing with ASP in only 2 or 3 days is a testament to the quality of this book. I've never read a Wrox book before now, but I will definitely only purchase Wrox books in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book for web development.......2005-01-25

This book starts by giving an overview of how the browser, server, and pages interact to deliver web-based data and pages. The first 3 chapters, and the XML intro, are worth the cost of this book. I started this book with very little understanding of how dynamic web pages are delivered over the net, and am now ready and anxious to take on my first web development challenge. Can't wait to put the info in this book to use! The writing style is great also - very seamless and easy understand, even after 6 authors compile their knowledge into one volume!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best introductory books ever.......2004-03-15

This text is so packed with information, it even goes beyond asp and introduces XML and COM+....so well written, so concise, publishers throughtout the country need to learn from wrox' writers on how to do technical books right! Every bit of code is explained in great detail, and while there are some errors, the website covers nearly all of them. Case in point: I won't be selling my copy back!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential For Beginners.......2004-02-25

All programming books are both overwritten and underwritten.

When you begin reading and learning the content is simply too much. As you progress you find yourself seeking other resources for "filler" information.

I didn't realize until I grew frustrated with the book how effective it was. I had gone from a complete beginner to someone who could put together access driven web applications and I didn't even realize how far I had come.

I now have over 30 programming and database books that is use as resource guides for particular problems etc. Each book helps me get past a certain problem/hurdle. Like a lawyers library I couldn't proceed without it.

That is simply the nature of programming these days. We beginners often underestimate the amount of knowledge expert programmers have. The trick is to take what we can from each resource. In order to progress we must keep adding to the resource collection.

This book is the staple of my collection. I refer to it almost daily and as my knowledge base expands I find myself making better use of it.

So its a must for the beginner in my opinion. Whether you just want a foundation to take free script from ASP Programming sites, edit it, and add it to your projects or you are looking to chase a programming degree or career this book gets you rolling.
