Book Description
This book is the first detailed study of Woody Allen's life and work, and an original attempt to locate Allen's work in the great tradition of American popular culture. It explores that inimitable New York Jewish voice in the themes, dreams, hopes and hidden meanings of Allen's urban humour, with countless examples of Allen's own hilarious comic lines.
Book Description
Are you "Hot Blooded"? A "Ramblin' Man"? "Do You Believe in Magic"? This exciting new series sheds fresh light on the power of the stars. Rhino Records, the leader of great music retrospective collections, and Chronicle Books have come together to assemble this astrological extravaganza. Colorful and vibrant, each of the twelve packages (one for every sign of the zodiac) contains a book as well as a tell-it-like-it-is CD with songs reflecting characteristics of that sign. If it's written in the stars, it's written in these pages--everything from personality assessment to insight into the work, home, style, health, and love arenas. Heed the valuable advice for avoiding potential relationship fiascos (Capricorns and Aries: steer clear!) and learn from references to famous couples. Discover why the Libra/Aquarius couple John Lennon and Yoko Ono came together blissfully while the volatile Scorpio/Sagittarius duo of Ike and Tina turner sent sparks flying. All this and more, plus a personalized CD that will have the sentimental Cancer reflecting on "This Magic Moment" by the Drifters and the honest and sincere Virgo jamming out to Aretha Franklin's "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing." Cosmic Grooves is not only an astrological guide to life but also the soundtrack for the journey

Pit your wits against strong players - very enjoyable.......2006-02-25
In this puzzle book you are given 351 positions to solve, all of which occurred in actual play. In fact the title is slightly misleading, in that many of the positions arose in games between players of "only" international master (IM) standard. But as far as solving the puzzles is concerned, it matters little in the end who the original players were.
The book begins with 51 relatively easy positions taken from master standard games. These are intended as a warm up exercise, in preparation for the much sterner tests to follow. I managed to solve most of them within seconds without too much difficulty, but I can't say the same about the harder positions that occur later in the book. These positions, all taken from grandmaster (GM) play, are really difficult, and often require greater skills than I can muster.
They are presented in a series of graded tests, with points awarded for solving correctly and occasionally points deducted for playing a plausible but losing move. (It is some consolation to know that GMs sometimes fall into the same trap that I fall into!). Your final points total is converted into an Elo rating. Not wanting to depress myself, I didn't bother to record my scores, but simply enjoyed pitting my wits against a series of strong players.
This review first appeared in the magazine En Passant.
hmmm not much new in here !.......2005-07-30
If you are looking for a new puzzlebook this is nice, but I have many already and many of the positions are seen before. I bought the book becoz of the title : Beat the Granmaster so I had exspected the lever to be harder, but many puzzles are to easy as one and two winningmoves. I I suggest it up to 1600 elo depending on your experinece with puzzlebooks.
But I will highly regcomend : The most amazing chess moves of all time from Gambit.

Book Description
If you use MySQL, you know why it's the world's most popular open source database: small, fast, and powerful, and so rich in features that no administrator or programmer can stay familiar with all of them. There are always some little-known commands and clauses that could help you become more efficient in your work if you could just keep them in mind. The problem is, you don't always have time to stop and thumb through an exhaustive reference when you're hard at work. If you need a quick reminder, the MySQL Pocket Reference can lead you straight to the answer you need to know to get the job done. Easy to take and use anywhere, this little book provides instant reminders on how to use important MySQL functions in conjunction with key parts of the LAMP open source infrastructure. Explanations are accompanied by tables and examples for maximum efficiency........2007-09-06
George Reese's MY SQL POCKET REFERENCE 2ND EDITION covers Version 5.1 and provides SQL statements, functions, and insights into its variations and utilities. Explanations are accompanied by tables and examples for maximum efficiency.
Excellent Quick Reference for MySQL RDBMS.......2007-08-04
Reese hits a solid triple to start the inning off and scores easily on the wild pitch thrown by the reader who says that the GRANT section is wrong.
This book works easily and appropriately at your deskside. I found the book to be a very simple, easy-to-navigate reference text that presents the most important aspects of MySQL in the quickest, most logical manner.
It is very easy to thumb through with every possible random page landing at a topic of interest. In a way, it was like working with a familiar dictionary, you know the kind, where you just kind of naturally crack it open near the word you're accessing and flip a couple of pages either direction to arrive at the exact reference location.
In that vein, I'd perhaps recommend that the margins contain "bread crumbs" telling us where we are in the book, but it isn't necessary since thicker sections often obviate themselves with just another page turn. Each page does have the chapter title in the margin, so my point is really one of nit-pickieness rather than a true critique.
To its credit, the layout of the book presents the content in a manner that follows the O'Reilly "risen bar" standard. It is easy to scan through the entire reference flipping pages as quickly as possible so that you are able to arrive at your sought information within as much as a second or two. The bold text draws your eye to the page and the size of the page allows one to capture everything in a single glance.
In my usage of the book, I found it very accurate and useful. I am a regular MySQL user and the formatting is very familiar to me. I highly recommend this book. If you are already familiar with SQL and the basics of database schema design, this is the perfect reference. I found it amazingly faster than loading the MySQL PDF manual and searching through potentially dozens of hits for the keywords sought. Even at the full cover price, this book is a value-added service at my side.
The sections on operators, functions, stored procedures and triggers make this book an invaluable tool for the DBA or programmer who knows the material, but fails to remember every single aspect about the syntax AND who is tired of seeing that familiar:
"You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near..."
The text also finds welcomed complement from the numerous examples of using commands and SQL keywords. They are invaluable for immediately deciphering the sometimes too-numerous options of a command.
I don't know that the book has taught me anything new at this point, but it certainly makes finding the details of what I already know much easier. Because of its brevity and its ease-of-use, it has made me want to play around with some of the various features of MySQL that I do not regularly use. That alone is going to teach me something new sooner or later!
If your budget is constrained to a single reference item on MySQL, you can't go wrong with this very portable pocket reference.
The back cover says: "When you reach a sticking point, but have to get to a solution quickly, MySQL Pocket Reference is the book you need."
I agree completely.
Entry level pocket reference.......2007-06-09
MySQL has gained a lot of functionality after this book was done, but if you are a infrequent developer and like to have a quick reference into basic MySQL functions this book is great.
Good, but needs updating & improving.......2007-05-07
It's handy, but a little old and too brief with important parts left out. It needs to be updated and improved. Ie: The admin commands are poorly covered. Do not use this book to help you use Grant or Revoke. The Grant All section is simply wrong.
small and excellent.......2005-08-20
Very practical and after every command there is a very useful example.

Customer Reviews:
Meets its goals.......2007-09-24
This is a great book for anyone who uses Python, especially for programmers at that level of Python competence after the beginner stage but short of a master's fluency. It provides a brief but clearly organized summary of Python basics: the language, primitive data structures, printf and other control codes, and the basic, everyday subset of the support libraries. And, since the editors apparently listened to criticism of earlier editions, the third editions includes a useful index as well as table of contents.
Some readers will be disappointed that it's not the book that it never meant to be. It never meant to be a tutorial or text book, it never meant to be a full specification of the language and libraries, and it never meant to be an encyclopedic description of the many available libraries. Decide what you want: if that's a quick reminder of Python's most useful basics, then this book will meet your needs.

It has no index!.......2007-09-17
I concur with the other reviewers that this book contains useful information but IT HAS NO INDEX, and FINDING that useful information is non trivial.
What were O'Reillys thinking? If a third edition ever appears, and if it has an index I'd be glad to buy it as the book does seem to pack a lot of information into a small compass.
Great book for beginners.......2007-09-02
This reference book is great for any beginner. I have recently picked up Python as my first language and have found myself commonly grabbing my reference book, going to the index, and looking up what I need. This along with the Python in a Nutshell book are my saving grace.
Great reference - No index. .......2006-09-04
It would be worth 5 stars if there was an index.
An Excellent Pocket Reference.......2006-05-18
I've not been too pleased with O'Reilly's Python material in general; it tends to be verbose and needlessly abstruse, but the Python Pocket Reference has proven itself an exception.
In ~150 pages, Mark Lutz manages to deliver an informative reference for the 2.4 version of the Python language, which I find myself referring to rather often. It's concise, well-organized, and easy to use. I've found this reference an invaluable tool in learning the Python language, as well.
The clarity of this reference will, doubtless, be a boon to any Python programmer.

Book Description
This handy little book offers programmers a complete overview of the syntax and semantics of regular expressions that are at the heart of every text-processing application. Ideal as a quick reference,
Regular Expression Pocket Reference covers the regular expression APIs for Perl 5.8, Ruby (including some upcoming 1.9 features), Java, PHP, .NET and C#, Python, vi, JavaScript, and the PCRE regular expression libraries.
This concise and easy-to-use reference puts a very powerful tool for manipulating text and data right at your fingertips. Composed of a mixture of symbols and text, regular expressions can be an outlet for creativity, for brilliant programming, and for the elegant solution.
Regular Expression Pocket Reference offers an introduction to regular expressions, pattern matching, metacharacters, modes and constructs, and then provides separate sections for each of the language APIs, with complete regex listings including:
- Supported metacharacters for each language API
- Regular expression classes and interfaces for Ruby, Java, .NET, and C#
- Regular expression operators for Perl 5.8
- Regular expression module objects and functions for Python
- Pattern-matching functions for PHP and the vi editor
- Pattern-matching methods and objects for JavaScript
- Unicode Support for each of the languages
With plenty of examples and other resources,
Regular Expression Pocket Reference summarizes the complex rules for performing this critical text-processing function, and presents this often-confusing topic in a friendly and well-organized format. This guide makes an ideal on-the-job companion.
Customer Reviews:
if you know reg exps and switch languages a lot..........2007-08-20
"Regular Expression - Pocket Reference" is just as high in quality as it's big brother ("Mastering Regular Expressions.")
The book begins with a very brief review of regular expression concepts and patterns. For each language/tool, the book includes tables to reference the metacharacters, a reference for the API/syntax/library and four examples. A few of the languages have additional examples tailored specifically to that language.
The languages/tools included are: Perl, Java, .NET, PHP, Python, Ruby, JavaScript, PCRE, Apache Web Server, vi and awk/sed/egrep. If you use a number of these, the book is a concise reference. If you only use one, you would be better served by printing out the relevant reference charts from the website of your language of choice.
If you are learning about regular expressions or only going to buy one regular expressions book, I recommend the "Mastering Regular Expressions." If you are knowledgeable about regular expressions and just need a review or reference, this book does the job nicely.
Easy to use due to excellent organiztion.......2007-07-30
This book is the best reference for regular expressions. The second edition came out in July 2007 and has several updates over the previous version. The reason for the books ease-of-use lies in the organization. The chapters represent one language each. For each language, listings of the meta-characters and examples are shown. Depending on the language being displayed, there are other subjects covered such as unicode support, object orientation, and different topics unique to the language. The primary parsing engine is listed at the beggining of the chapters with the examples arranged at the ends of the chapters. I generally need to look up expression for JavaScript and [...]. Both of these are covered plus perl, java, php, python, ruby, pcre, apache, vi and shells. I just bookmark the 2 areas I need and I can lookup the expression listing in a few seconds.
Excellent concise reference for regular expressions.......2007-07-27
This is a handy little guide for common regular expression fundamentals and odds and ends. The intro chapter does a nice job of giving you the regex elevator speech and hits all the important fundamentals: different engines, metacharacters, and general pattern rules. There's also a regex "Cookbook" section; however, that bit is only two pages and the "recipes" there are so rudimentary that they're nearly useless and would have been better left to a different book.
The remaining chapters hit regex support in major languages, Apache, shells, and Vi and Vim editors. These sections are very well done and give you great guidance to regex implementations on that platform, plus give you guidance on the APIs you'll need for working with regexes. Languages covered include Perl 5.8, Java 1.5/1.6, .NET framework with examples in C#, PHP, Python, Ruby, Python and JavaScript. The Perl Compatible Regular Expression library (PCRE) is also covered.
Each chapter is concise, well-written and hits the major things you'll need to refresh your memory on from time to time.
Overall it's a very well done book.
Second Edition Arrives.......2007-07-26
§
Gawd, I hate doing regular expressions. Don't you? As far as I am concerning, any help is good help.
The new edition adds sections on Ruby and Apache web server and a few updates on previous existing language content.
One of the best things about this book is that the author synchs the content with the authoritative reference Mastering Regular Expressions. In a welcome convenience, the author provides page references to that book to point to elaboration.
One section of the book I really liked (but wished was much more extensive) contained 2 pages of cookbook examples. Learning by example is easier for most of us. It would have been nice to have many more practical examples, esp. regarding Web applications.
§
Handy compilation of regex.......2007-06-06
This reference book is very handy for anyone doing text manipulation.
With this book you don't need to be constant user of regular expressions to take advantage to their robust abilities.
