Book Description

The #1 New York Times bestselling memoir of the young woman unknowingly ensnared in convicted killer Scott Peterson's web of lies, who risked everything to seek justice for Laci Peterson and her unborn child.

Amber Frey's life was full of blessings: an exciting new business, a beautiful home, and most of all, her infant daughter, Ayiana. But Frey had been through some unhappy relationships, and she still longed for a true and loving partner. In November, 2002, she went on a blind date with Scott Peterson. He was handsome, charming, thoughtful, and romantic. Best of all, he was single and ready to settle down–or so he said.

Their connection was immediate. Over the next few weeks, Frey and Peterson grew closer and closer. He won her over her with his warmth, humor, and intelligence, and before long, he began to speak of the beautiful future they were destined to share as a family. Soon enough, however, Frey began to suspect that Scott Peterson might not be the man he claimed to be. On December 9, he broke down in tears and told her that he had been married, but had "lost" his wife. This was weeks before Laci Peterson, eight months pregnant at the time, was even reported missing. Scott Peterson hadn't lost her, but clearly he was planning to.

Suddenly a relationship that seemed full of promise was turning into Frey's worst nightmare. Frey launched an investigation of her own. The moment she was able to confirm her worst suspicions, she contacted the Modesto Police Department and offered to do whatever she could to help. She began secretly taping her conversations with Scott, pressing him for information but never letting on that she had heard the news of Laci's disappearance. Those conversations became the basis for the prosecution's case against Scott Peterson for the murder of his wife and unborn child. Frey's whole world was turned upside down in the process. She lost her privacy, as every detail of her life was scrutinized by the media, who couldn't seem to get enough of this tragic, heart–wrenching story. But she soldiered on, looking deep inside herself and drawing strength from her faith. Frey became Laci's voice, seeking justice for women everywhere who had ever been victimized by violence.

Amber Frey's life was full of blessings: an exciting new business, a beautiful home, and most of all, her infant daughter, Ayiana. But Amber had been through some unhappy relationships, and she longed for a true and loving partner. In November 2002, she went on a blind date with Scott Peterson. He was handsome, charming, thoughtful, and romantic. Best of all, he was single and ready to settle down . . . or so he said.

Their connection was immediate. Over the next few weeks, Amber and Scott grew closer and closer. Scott won her over with his warmth, humor, and intelligence, and he even won the heart of little Ayiana. Before long, he began to speak of the beautiful future the three of them were destined to share as a family.

Soon enough, however, Amber began to suspect that Scott Peterson might not be the man he claimed to be. On December 9, he broke down in tears and told her that he had been married, but had ""lost"" his wife. This was weeks before Laci Peterson, eight months pregnant at the time, was even reported missing. Scott Peterson hadn't lost her, but clearly he was planning to.

Suddenly a relationship that seemed full of promise was turning into Amber's worst nightmare.

Amber launched an investigation of her own. The moment she was able to confirm her worst suspicions, she contacted the Modesto Police Department, in northern California, and offered to do whatever she could to help. She began secretly taping her conversations with Scott, pressing him for information but never letting on that she had heard the news of Laci's disappearance. Those conversations became the basis for the prosecution's case against Scott Peterson for the murder of his wife and unborn child.

Amber's whole world was turned upside down in the process. She lost her privacy, as every detail of her life was scrutinized by the media, who couldn't seem to get enough of this tragic, heart-wrenching story. But she soldiered on, looking deep inside herself and drawing strength from her faith.

Witness is the chilling story of how a young woman became ensnared in Scott Peterson's web of lies, then risked everything to seek justice for Laci Peterson and her unborn child, Conner. It is also a story of forgiveness and faith, and of one woman's struggle to live with an open and honest heart. "

i was intrigued to get ambers side of the story. was a book i could not put down, finished in a day, have now lent to my friend to read.

3 out of 5 stars "The Other Woman" speaks.......2007-05-10

Amber Frey was the infamous "other woman" in the Laci Peterson case. When a case like this becomes national news, we immediately scrounge for as much information as possible about all parties. I have often wondered what it was about this case that seized us to the point of media obsession for all the months and eventually years it was drawn out. It was the fact that Laci vanished on Christmas Eve, that she was about to have her first child in a few weeks, that she was living a happily married life, and that her husband Scott was so obviously a liar and so obviously guilty of her murder.

When a woman is murdered, the police will look at the most obvious suspect - the boyfriend or husband. Scott was no exception. He clearly didn't want to be married to Laci anymore, and didn't want children. So, he decided to kill the both of them rather than walk out or divorce. Part of his sociopathic tendancies and want to leave the pending fatherhood lead him to lead a double life. He had a girlfriend, and her name is Amber Frey.

Amber was innocent. She was clearly lied to and caught up in this circus. I felt pity for her, as she was an innocent pawn in this. Scott's girlfriend could have been anyone. She could have been your sister, your friend, your mother. And Amber was Anyone. What amazed me the most about her story is how Scott's lies began to unfold and how he compulsively called her during the hottest days after her disappearence. Amber did the right thing. When she realized she was not only being lied to but that he murdered his wife, she immediately went to the police and cooperated. Their taped phone conversations would unfold as some of the most critical evidence in the trial. And she never faultered. She stood her ground even though she was terrified of the whole ordeal.

Why not 5 stars? It's not a great literary work, she's just an average woman. She made her share of mistakes in life, and had them splashed all over the tabloids. She and Scott slept together on their first date, which makes us believe that the relationship could not have been very serious had Scott not been who he was. While we don't know enough about Amber to judge her, she didn't strike me as a promiscuous person. She was only human, she made some mistakes in life. And, she ended up writing a book just because she could. People were interested enough to hear what she had to say.

I hope Amber is able to live the rest of her life out of the glare of the spotlight. She'll always have this stigma attached to her, but she attempted to clear her name with this book.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2007-04-02

Doing the right thing isn't easy. In fact, it comes at a price. Amber Frey, an ordinary and imperfect woman, paid that price when she learned that the "perfect" man she'd been dating - Scott Peterson - not only was married, but was suspected of having murdered his missing wife and unborn baby. She assisted the police as they investigated, and then followed through as a witness in court, despite the personal difficulties doing so presented when she'd just given birth to her second child.

The case may be sensational, but this book is not. It's Ms. Frey's simply told first person account, first of her relationship with Scott Peterson and then of all that followed the moment when her slowly growing doubts about this man found confirmation. Sometimes Ms. Frey is admirable, and sometimes manifestly not; but that's exactly where her book's power lies. She's honest about herself as well as about the pathological liar who was her lover, and once she knows the truth she never wavers in her determination to see justice done for another young mother: Laci Peterson.

Not a polished work by any means, but an interesting and unexpectedly uplifting read.

4 out of 5 stars A Fast Read.....Hometown Hero........2007-02-15

This book is a fast read, I just bought it yesterday and I am already halfway through it. Amber Frey's story makes the book hard to put down.I have to warn that the book has a very rapid pace, and the reader has to consider that the author had a quick and short lived relationship with Scott Peterson. I am from the same place as Amber Frey and I admire that she did what was right and went forward to tell the story from her side of this sad tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Super stories........2006-11-10

I'm a big Agatha Christie fan and these stories are just great. Each one has its own special twist. Years ago I remember my dad sending me a video tape he had made of "The Witness for the Prosecution" starring Diana Rigg. I was instantly hooked on Agatha Christie.

4 out of 5 stars Read for fun and in the process learn from the master.......2006-08-11

This is a collection of short stories by herself, the world's best selling mystery writer. The lead story, The Witness for the Prosecution, a masterpiece, runs only 29 pages and has all the plot elements of both the movie and the play. The movie and the play elaborate on these by introducing a greater complexity and an extraordinary ending, which I will not spoil for you. Some of the stories are quite good. Others are quite bad. Particularly good are the logical and eerie ones concerned with the wife murdering the husband or vice versa. Those are coherent, and fun. The others are hack work with the interesting asides from the author showing that the author knows the story is bunk. The worst story in this collection is another case solved by Hercule Poirot. I admit I dislike the famous detective, the man, his bravo, his gigantic ego, etc. The most annoying thing is his deductions, often inane, always based on flimsy evidence. They make little sense and are likely to be wrong were it not for authorial support from Agatha. All in all, this collection is well worth reading even for someone like myself who does not enjoy short stories (mainly short stories are too short for my taste) both from an historical perspective and from the perspective of a writer who might wish to copy the master. They do have the one redeeming feature of all great literature: They are fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Lee does Agatha Christie!.......2006-02-01

Christopher Lee masterfully spins a classic Christie tale! Lee always delivers a superb performance and I recommend all of his audio books!

4 out of 5 stars 11 short stories without Poirot or Marple.......2003-01-02

Each story herein, except "The Second Gong", has also appeared in either _The Hound of Death_ or _The Listerdale Mystery_. Some of the stories are fantasy fiction rather than mysteries, but don't be *too* quick to assign supernatural causes to anything.

"Accident" (1929) - Evans (formerly Inspector Evans of the CID) recognizes in the six-years-married Merrowdenes the notorious Mrs. Anthony, acquitted of poisoning her first husband - judged to have died of an accidental overdose of arsenic. As a girl, her stepfather accidentally fell to his death from a cliff during a walk. Not looking good for *Mr.* Merrowdene...

"The Fourth Man" (December 1925) As a supernatural story, best appreciated in Christie's fantasy-dominated collection _The Hound of Death_. Three ever-so-superior professional men - minister, physician, and lawyer - begin discussing a famous multiple personality case during a night train journey. Even though they're missing a fourth point of view - that of the man in the street - they ignore the fourth man in their compartment...

"The Mystery of the Blue Jar" (1933) Jack Hartington lives for golf; since he's 24 and has to earn a living, he lives near a golf course where he can practice every morning before work. Then screams no one else hears begin coming from a cottage near the course, every morning at the same time - and whatever's going on centers around the image of a woman holding a blue jar.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl" a.k.a. "Mr. Eastwood's Adventure" (August 1924) Anthony Eastwood is stuck, trying to create a plot for the title "The Mystery of the Second Cucumber", when a mysterious phone call with 1 word - 'cucumber' - entangles him in a *real* mystery.

"Philomel Cottage" (November 1924) Businesslike Alix King expected to marry Dick Windyford, fellow clerk, when they could afford it - but he was too proud to propose when she got a windfall inheritance. Then Gerald Martin swept her off her feet in a whirlwind courtship - a perfect stranger. But like Bluebeard's wives, Alix gets curious about his past...

"The Red Signal" (June 1924) Sir Alington West, a distinguished alienist, has no time for ESP. His nephew Dermot has had a few 'red signals' in his life, but as his uncle points out, he'd seen signs of impending mortal peril and just hadn't consciously put them together. But why should he have it during a party - when the only danger is his hidden love for his best friend's wife?

"The Second Gong" - An early version of "Dead Man's Mirror", written first but published later. I recommend the expanded rewrite in the _Dead Man's Mirror_ collection.

"Sing a Song of Sixpence" (1934) Elderly Sir Edward Palliser, K.C., never expected to see Magdalen Vaughn again after a shipboard romance - let alone to be taken up on his offer to help if she ever needed it! Her family sponged off Great-aunt Lily Crabtree, who has been brutally murdered - and they're the chief suspects.

"S.O.S." (February 1926) The Dinsmead family - pompous father, worn-down mother, and 3 grown children - moved to a lonely country home rather abruptly upon Mr. Dinsmead's retirement from the building trade. They're all unhappy, except the father, who seems to have something up his sleeve. Then a stranger (parapsychologist Mortimer Cleveland), stranded for the night by a flat tire, finds a mysterious message written in the dust beside his bed...

"Where There's a Will" a.k.a. "Wireless" (1926) Mary Harter's physician, in the style of the old school, was far more blunt about the seriousness of her heart condition to her nephew than to her. Charles, making a parade of his superior knowledge of modern technology, wheedles her into getting not only an elevator, but a radio...which seems to justify all her misgivings about these electrical contraptions when it begins relaying messages from her late husband, saying that he's coming for her...

"The Witness for the Prosecution" (1933) Unlike the Billy Wilder film version, here the viewpoint character and chief investigator is the prisoner's solicitor, Mayherne; the K.C. conducting the court case isn't even named. The information brought out during testimony in the film mostly appears during Vole's interview with Mayherne. The adaptation was faithful, except that here Vole's first meeting with Emily French is more dramatic, and her fluffy-headed eccentric image wasn't translated to film. The ending of the story, though, isn't as trite the movie's.

5 out of 5 stars I WAS THRILLED TO FIND THIS BOOK.......2001-09-24

As a mystery writer with my debut novel in its initial release (and a creative writing professor at various California State Universities), I was thrilled to find this book. As with most mystery authors, I cut my teeth reading Agatha Christie's books. She invented the modern cozy, and these stories display Ms. Christie at the top of her talents. If you like mystery short stories, these classics are for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Compelling Read.......2007-07-08

Amazing how this book kept me interested from the beginning to the end, despite the fact that I knew so much about the case. Not only that this book proved Scott's guilt, but it is also a story of a young, beautiful woman's struggle from childhood to this very scandal. She was vulnerable, yet strong. But in the end she rose above it all. However, I was deeply saddened to see the lack of support from her stepsister and the loss of friends (such as Paul) because they want to take advantage of her at the time she needed them the most.

There are lots of lesson to learn from her personal mistake...one of which is to be careful to such person as Scott Peterson. As one of her lawyer called him.....a wolf in sheep's clothing. Cold Eyes

                Book Description

Massive geopolitical shifts and dramatic developments in computerization and biotechnology are heralding the transformation from the modern to the postmodern age. We are confronted with altered modes of work, communication, and entertainment; new postindustrial and political networks; novel approaches to warfare; genetic engineering; and even cloning. This compelling book explores the challenges to theory, politics, and human identity that we face on the threshold of the third millennium. It follows on the success of Best and Kellner s two previous books: Postmodern Theory, acclaimed as the best critical introduction to the field, and The Postmodern Turn, which provides a powerful mapping of postmodern developments in the arts, politics, science, and theory. In The Postmodern Adventure, Best and Kellner analyze a broad array of literary, cultural, and political phenomena--from fiction, film, science, and the Internet, to globalization and the rise of a transnational image culture. They use the best of modern and postmodern perspectives to illuminate contemporary life and to strive for a just and viable future.

Best and Kellner present their ideas in a very compelling and informative fashion. In doing so, they provide a much needed wake up call for those of us who have been caught up in the spectacles of modern capitalism. They advocate a reconciliation of both modern and postmodern ideas to create a new scientific paradigm that will make the best of both positions, and, consequently, create a restructing of world order for the benefit of all humanity. A must read!!!

5 out of 5 stars ForeWord's Gold Medal 2001 Book of the Year in Philosophy.......2002-05-17

Simply put: this book is an award winner from the two guys who have published the classic survey text Postmodern Theory, and who then followed up with the book that pretty much inaugurated the field of Critical Postmodernism in America, The Postmodern Turn, in which they mapped the emerging intersections of critical theory, art and aesthetics, philosophy, cultural studies, and the quantum changes in the sciences. That book won the Michael Harrington Award for the Best Book of 1998, New Political Science Section.

I can honestly say that The Postmodern Adventure is twice the book that the last in the series was (and that book was clearly no slouch!). Best & Kellner clearly (but sophisticatedly) chart the complex novelties of our present moment -- illuminating the relationships between such diverse phenomena as Virtuality and the Internet-work, American war and terrorism, Cosmology, Animal Rights, and Biotechnology and Cloning. All of this is seen through the guiding lens of Thomas Pynchon's multiplicitous vision of the Rocket in Gravity's Rainbow.

At the end, Best & Kellner point thinkers and scholars alike toward a future which is fast emerging everywhere at the extremes of Utopia/Dystopia. It is our Adventure to fight creatively and constructively for the former, while critically analyzing the latter, to make of theory a space of practice, and to open our narrow frameworks for living up and out toward the cosmic whole in the name of social justice.

Yes, if you are looking for salon-swinging Frenchmen, their cigarettes held dramatically aloft as they speak incomprehensible oaths to the end of metaphysics, then this is not the Postmodernism for you. This is Critical Postmodernism -- an analysis and a synthesis, a great college text and an interesting read after work, a political statement and a theoretical foundation for others to make their own. Think Deep Ecology meets Cyberpunk meets the Fight for Democracy and you may begin to appreciate just what's going on here...do you think that's a Frankenstein's monster? Good -- that's in there too: go ahead and read!

We live in a revolutionary time -- this book awakens the Postmodernisms afoot in both American soil and abroad to the grander narrative of this amazing moment: counselling the age-old wisdom that "Philosophy begins in wonder," but to this we must add the Postmodern element of flow, of "wander." Adding wonder to wander, Best & Kellner arrive at "Adventure" -- the Postmodern Adventure.

                5 out of 5 stars A cross-section of disciplines is revealed.......2001-10-11

This college-level survey of science, technology and cultural studies provides challenges to theory, politics and issues which we face in modern times. A cross-section of disciplines is revealed in a title which is billed as philosophy but which includes a strong examination of science and culture. Students within many scientific disciplines will find its discussions intriguing - and scholarly.

3 out of 5 stars All the Trendy Horses.......2001-09-12

Part of the fun of reading postmodern criticism is its outlandishness, its attacks on conventional modern modes of thought. Best and Kellner, well-versed in the theories of Derrida, Lacan, Baudrillard, Bordieu and the other wild beasts of France and their worldwide acolytes, manage to take much of the fun right out them. In a style that is pendantic, dull, but full of insight, they trace the interpenetration of the modern with the postmodern and talk reasonably about the irreasonable. Good content, bad style.

                  1 out of 5 stars A disappointing Mish Mash.......2003-03-19

Although I consider Serious Sam to be an all-time standout game, the Strategy Guide is a flop. The popup hints and strategy from the software are better than this book. First it offers "Every Secret Revealed" which is usually nothing more than secret nooks with treasure of other reward. There are no worthwhile strategies for getting past difficult areas.

Secondly, and most importantly, it does not follow the flow of game play and I was rarely able to locate the page that correlates to where I was. It is difficult to locate the buildings and scenes to match the game. This was a great disappointment to me.

Finally, the text and photos in this 128 page comic book are printed on black background, making it harder yet to read or interpret the 1-1/2 inch photos.

However, if you have already conquered the game and just want to be annoyed while you get eye strain, put it in your shopping cart and procede to checkout.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Strategy game.......2006-11-06

This is an excellent game I enjoy which isn't addictive as those crazy MMORPG's around today, and also very fun. I have been playing it alone and with my family (including my wife)for 9 months now and we had lots of fun at it. We havn't got bored of since we can change the game style in our skirmishes.

Its a huge upgrade compared to older fantastic strategy's (back then) such as age of empires.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed - Units stats riddled with typos.......2006-03-09

I recently purchased the strategy guide for the EA games title: Battle for Middle Earth II. I was primarily looking forward to the customary (and advertised) information on unit statistics and upgrades etc.

Unfortunately the tables that are supposed to contain this information in the book are riddled with typos.

                    - Many units have blanks or dashes instead of the appropriate stats

                    - Many units have letters in columns that should contain numbers and numbers in columns that should contain letters

                    - The unit upgrade information is referenced, but was totally omitted from the tables

If you are primarily interested in the unit statistics I would not recommend this guide.
