    Book Description

What does it mean to talk about a `national' cinema? To what extent can British cinema, dominated for so many years by Hollywood, be considered a national cinema? Waving the Flag investigates these questions from a historical point of view, and challenges the received wisdoms of British cinema history in many ways. Andrew Higson investigates theories of national cinema, and surveys the development of the British film industry and film culture. Three case studies combine histories of production and reception with textual analysis of key films from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s such as Sing As We Go, Comin Thro the Rye, and This Happy Breed. Drawing some revealing conclusions about the extent to which the many rich traditions of British film-making share the same distinctive stylistic and ideological characteristics, what emerges is a sometimes surprising picture of a specifically national cinema. Combining detailed analyses of film texts with studies of industrial and cultural contexts, including critical reception, Waving the Flag is an impressive and wide-ranging survey of the concept of national cinema as it has developed in Britain. `by far the best book about British film yet published', Choice `a thoughtful, stimulating, and well-researched book.' , Sunday Telegraph `this painstaking piece of scholarship, which manages to home in on the most minute narrative and stylistic details of the films under scrutiny and to excoriate notions of what "Britishness" is all about.', TLS `a valuable addition to British film writing...which adds considerably to our understanding of British cinema history', Screen `the book is packed with detailed analysis, dense arguments, and an impressive breadth of cultural reference', Media, Culture, and Society `an exciting new book...valuable to all those concerned with how the cultural analysis of film relates to the economic context.' 5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SERIES!! IS A MUST READ!.......2006-06-24

I got the entire series this past Christmas. I had read the first 2 because although my library had more, they didn't have all of them, and they didn't have the 3rd and I don't like to read things out of order so I was really sad. So then I was soo happy to find out they were being republished by Image Cascading!!!

So yea I read them all and they all rock!!! It's nice seeing what teenagers did back in the 50's. And it was also nice how different people's relationships were with their family's, I wish it were more like that today. And they are also way more responsible and mature then we are now. Making their own money, not having to depend on their parents for everything. And their parents respect and trust them more too! And they definatly treat their parents with much respect which is ALOT more then I can say about kids of today.

The first book is about Beany's older sister, Mary Fred. It is in MF's junior year of highschool, when Beany is in 8th grade. The rest of the books are all about Beany, in highschool, college, and then when she gets married. And let me just say I LOVE who she ends up with. They are SOOO cute!!!

Everyone should read these books they are amazing and are definatly one of my favorite books ever!

In an attempt to save the family name, rebuild the family legacy, hang onto Taylor Publishing, Kyle Taylor arranged a marriage between his daughter, Alicia and Darren, the son of Jonathan Whitman, in order to avoid a hostile takeover.

Alicia was only eight years old when her father arranged her marriage to Darren. Alicia was never told of this arrangement and she definitely wouldn't be pleased if she did know. While growing up, Darren was the friend of her brother and in her opinion mean . . . she hated him. Later Alicia developed a crush on Darren only to have her heart crushed when she overheard him say that he didn't like her. His words will come back to haunt him.

Darren was twelve years old when the agreement was made between their fathers. In his opinion Alicia was a brat and he made it his mission to antagonize her as much as possible. Years later, Darren had returned home for the summer and enjoyed talking with Alicia until she overheard him deny any feelings for her. Alicia cut him out of her life completely but she was constantly in Darren's thoughts.

Darren didn't find out about the arranged marriage to Alicia until the day he graduated from boarding school. His father tried making it sound like a family tradition. Darren had an image of a little girl in pigtails and braces in his head and there's no way he's going to marry "the brat." Instead his mind wanders to a woman he'd met right after graduation whom he'd invited to a party later that night. They hadn't even had time to exchange names. It isn't until they meet up at the party that Alicia admits that she is there attending her cousin's graduation. Darren realizes who she is seconds after she tells him the name of her cousin. For Alicia, recognition takes a few minutes longer and a little taunting from Darren. He's more enthusiastic about the idea of marrying `Licia now, but only if she falls in love with him. No amount of pressure from his father is going to force him into a loveless marriage. Darren knows from Alicia's past stubborn behavior that if she finds out about their fathers' agreement she won't ever give him the chance. With a hip-hop producer, Flex, escorting Alicia to various hot spots, it looks like Darren may not have a chance but he's determined to somehow get Alicia to love him.

Gwyneth Bolton's I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME is smart, sassy, and a whole lota fun! I absolutely love Alicia's determinedly stubborn streak and her outright defiance of tradition. She's a strong-willed character who isn't about to allow any man, including her father tell her what to do. Darren is just as determined but not in such an in-your-face way. What I really adore though is that Ms. Bolton's writing transcends color barriers. The characters are brilliantly represented and realistic. This is a wonderful debut story for this obviously talented author. I can't wait for Flex's story now. I'm dying to know more details about his involvement with another artist.

I am fortunate enough to have an ARC of SWEET SENSATION which releases in March and I have to tell you I'm LOVING Flex and Sweet Dee's story!

          yes I am.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut Romance Novel.......2006-11-14

I rarely and close to never give reviews but this book was worthy of it. Ms. Bolton delivered on a novel for true romance readers. This book had drama, excitement, jealousy, love, romance, steamy sex scenes and more. This was a story of a true romance that span from the first childhood crush to walking down the aisle later in adulthood. This is one book that I will not donate to my local library but keep in my personal collection because I am sure that I will revisit the Taylor-Whitman families once again the future. I am truly looking forward to future novels from this promising writer.

5 out of 5 stars DYNAMITE READ!!! FIVE STAR READ!!!.......2006-10-06

Gwyn's writings has captured the raw emotions of her generation and propelled a clever story line in "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." As a male reader, I was caught up in the plot and the stong imagages of her characters and could not put the book down. There were a lot of moments when I wanted to say to Alicia and Darren, "right on" and on the other hand say "what the hell are you doing, you're going to mess it up." Hats off to you Gwyneth Bolton for capturing your dreams through words. Stay strong and do not let the haters bind your freedom to express love. I've already pre-purchased your December release "Divine Destiny."

4 out of 5 stars Loved It Indeed.......2006-09-19

Since Darren Whitman was twelve and Alicia Taylor was eight, they have hated each other...or so it seemed. Each summer when Alicia's cousin, Kendrick, came to visit them, Darren, Kendrick and their friend, Troy become royal pains in Alicia's behind. When Alicia attends her cousin Kendrick's high school graduation, things suddenly take on a drastic change when she spots Darren all grown up and more gorgeous than she could have ever imagined.

Darren on the other hand cannot forget Alicia, the pretty girl wearing the red dress at his graduation. Yet, he must remind himself that she is only fourteen and that he has many more women to conquer. Unfortunately, he is quickly snapped back into reality when his father tells him of an arrangement that he and Alicia's father has made. The arrangement involves him marrying Alicia or being disinherited from the Whitman fortune and causing Alicia's father to lose his publication business. Although Darren refuses to let his father dicate his life, he finds himself being captivated by Alicia once he graduates from college and finds her all grown-up and more beautiful than the last time he saw her.

Despite what is at stake, Darren eventually finds himself genuinely falling in love with Alicia. Unable to resist Darren's charm, Alicia's preconceived notions regarding Darren quickly evaporates even though she tries to resist her newfound feelings with everything she has.

In Gwyneth Bolton's I'm Gonna Make You Love me, you will find yourself laughing, rooting and maybe even shedding a tear or two as you journey down the path of love and deception with Alicia and Darren. If you are a romance fan, this is a must read. Gwyneth Bolton will definitely make you love her, Darren and Alicia as you turn the pages on this exciting romantic thriller.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing La Tonya Williams.......2007-05-16

Boy oh boy, this was a great read! One of the best I've read during the year!

Laquisha - I loved the growth in her over the course of the book (even though I'm not feeling her name). She knew when it was time to change the outrageous hairdos, attire and her outlook on life. I was so proud of her. She had definitely been "upgraded". LOL

And didn't she luck up meeting a kind, attentive doctor? I kept thinking "he couldn't possibly be interested in Laquisha, they're from two different worlds". It was beautiful that he noticed her potential. Other than her daughter's antics, they had very little stress in their marriage.

Tate - what a selfish son of a @itch. He may have had a successful career but his personality sucked. I guess he heard the word "NO" from the females one time too many during his adolescent years. LOL

Tate definitely met his match with the beautiful, Tangela. She was a bit neurotic when it came to loving Tate. She lost herself for a moment but she bounced back when she decided to return to school and pursue her dreams.

Daneisha - this child is the perfect example of a good girl gone bad. She's off the hook. All of her home training when out of the window once she discovered boys.

I hope La Tonya doesn't make we wait long for her next book based on the trials and tribulations of Daneisha.

5 out of 5 stars LaTonya, You Made Me Love Them.......2007-04-23

I picked this book up it out of the blue and will forever be a fan of LaTonya Williams' work. The characters, Tate Gibson who was once a nerd growing up has become the complete package any woman would want. Good parents, good education, good job, and knows his way around the bedroom. Lequisha, a single mother of three kids, who works two jobs and seeking good husband. Tangela, the college student who has an agenda of her own. LaTonya made her characters come to life and made me love them. We all know a Tate, Lequisha, and a Tangela. This was a Great Read! I enjoyed it tremendously and look forward to reading Messin' Up next Spring.

5 out of 5 stars Back then they didn't want me, now I'm HOTTT, they all on me...........2007-04-21

Kudo's to Ms. Williams for this hot joint!!!

She begins it with the introduction of our central character, a true playa-playa named Tate Gibson. Tate has it going on and he knows it. Good looking, single, no children, great job, sharp ride, the whole package, and every woman wants him. The only problem is he's has too many willing and able ladies.

There's the office affair, then there's LeQuisha, who's an around the way girl that he believes is beneath his status, but she fulfills all other needs plus she has three rugrats to boot. Then enters Tangela, and she is all that he feels that he needs.

Needless to say, there is an abundance of drama in this crazy mix brimming with sexual trysts, threats, lies, cheating, you name it, Ms. Williams has 'brung it!"

          Excellent job!!

5 out of 5 stars Make You Love Me By. La Tonya Y. Williams.......2007-03-04

I really felt this book it was about real topics that occur in real life. You should never try to make a man love you if he does not feel the same way you feel, and there is somebody out there that will love you Lequisha found a good man to love her back and marry her, plus he was a doctor, and Tate will lets just say he learned the hard way " You don't know what you have until it is gone ".Read this book, Latonya you did a great job on this book it was real.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-12-04

Make You Love Me is a very good book from beginning to end. It is based on one man and his many women. The author, La Tonya Y. Williams did a great job with the characters, plot and ending. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

"How can I find TRUE love?" It is a question without gender. It is a primal need that exists in all of us. Why then do so many people erect self-imposed road blocks that keep them frustratingly alone-never figuring out why a lasting, genuine relationship eludes them? With warmth, candidness and unflinching honesty, I'm Going to Make You Love Me answers that question and provides a clear, proven method for bringing into your life a person of your own choosing in whom you can find-and maintain-lasting love. This is no cutesy, "how-to-pick-up-people" manual. This book provides the sincere person with insight into the real reason behind almost every failed relationship and how to correct the problem. Be warned: You will not remain the same after reading this book. To love and be loved takes courage. Are you up to it?

5 out of 5 stars Great, rare reprint of Frank Mentzer's RPGA modules.......2000-05-02

By far the rarest module in the I series, this one is also the most coveted by collectors and DMs alike, because it is one of the best adventures ever written for the game. High praise, but I've run this one 6 times throughout the years, and every group hailed it as one of their favorites! The Holy Grail of AD&D, the Egg of the Phoenix is a magical artifact whose true powers have grown wilder over the centuries with every retelling. Now, the heroes (levels 5-9) will have months of adventure as this 100-page epic sweeps them through caravans, thievery, diabolical machinations, and a level 20 cleric/25 arch-mage who happens to have the four Elemental Princes of Evil on his case. Impossible? Only if you don't give your heart and soul, as a team, to survive... a wonderful tale, highest recommendation.

                      Book Description

A practical and concise book that teaches XML from the ground up. This tutorial style presents various XML methodologies and techniques in an easy to understand way, building a basis for further exploration.

XML is essentially an enabling technology, dry and boring on its own. As a result, most books on the market are dry, and academic in nature teaching theory rather than practice. This book actually teaches practical, real-world applications of XML, using the very latest version of PHP (PHP 5) as the base language.

No Nonsense XML Web Development with PHP explains how XML can be put to use in real-world projects. The book also covers buzz topics such as RSS and Web Services.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-04-09

This book has a few shortcomings. The author goes about building a toy CMS that stores various content types. One of the content types is an article. A big disappointment is that he uses a CDATA section to encapsulate the content of an article - it simply contains XHTML tags. I was quite disappointed when I saw this because it cheapened the book and gave it less technical depth. A more suitable example would have been to use simplified Docbook or even come up with a simple article DTD consisting of custom element tags. Then show by example XML/PHP/XSLT on that DTD. That would have been way more useful.

For PHP developers, this book doesn't use much of it until well into the middle chapters. There are quick tutorials on DTDs, RSS, and SimpleXML that are good. The chapter on client side Javascript should have been removed (wasn't this book about PHP?). The templating framework is backwards - the author uses php includes to build out the page. He should have used XSLT to create a proper XHTML transformation instead.

The writing is generally quite good and the reading light. You can go sit outside on the porch without a computer and follow it quite nicely. The organization and topic coverage is good also. I would have liked to see more technical depth and thought put into it, rather than what appeared to be a quick surface introduction. For example, show more how you can pass variables between PHP and XSLT as well as how to cache the pages. The admin panel should also take into consideration that to see 1000 articles on one full page is silly - use a pager.

Because the author used too many shortcuts to write this book, I gave it an average rating. If you are looking for a basic book on XML/PHP development, this is a good start. For those more experienced, I'm afraid this won't suit your experience level and would be left looking for more.

4 out of 5 stars Is XML as useful as claimed?.......2006-03-23

This book is helpful and easy to understand and follow, however, the more I read about XML the less useful it seems to be. If I knew then what I know now I probably wouldn't bother learning about XML because I work with web design and nothing else. I am familiar with PHP and MYSQL so I can't really find a purpose for XML at this time. The book is great but the technology is not as useful as I thought it would be.

I may change my mind in the future but for now XML is on the back burner and PHP/MYSQL is my current focus.

My point in this review is to let others know that if you already know PHP and MYSQL and only work on the web then you may find learning XML redundant or maybe even useless. I'm sure it would look great on a resume though.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but not great.......2006-02-20

This is my revised and rewritten review of this book.

The first review dated Feb 19 was just two stars, titled `Disjointed and Superficial', and read...

I bought Myer's book to help me move from XHTML to XML and to handle data with PHP which does not fit well in a relational database / SQL. I am not interested in writing a CMS, and therefore tried to skim or skip those parts. Unfortunately, some key points are buried in the CMS discussion. Subjects (ie: Namespace) seem to be mentioned or touched on in several places without doing a thorough job at any one point or multiple points. The subjects which are discussed, are not discussed in depth. And why is Ralph Waldo Emmerson given ink on page 59, and then included in the index??? I found myself working a little too hard to just get the important points.

I know Myer tried very hard to write a good book, and it is not a 'really bad' book. On a positive note: The editing error rate seems to be low as compared to a lot of first edition, first printing computer books. There is some good material in it, but this book does not work well for me. I have at least temporarily given up on this book a little short of the half way point. Since finding a really good XML book seems harder than it should be, I may come back to this one, and if so, I'll update this opinion.

Warning: [3 opinions given here appear to be by paid reviewers. ie: 9/14/05, 10/7/05, and 11/8/05. I now suspect some of the others are personal friends of the author. Hint: Check out the person writing the review before actually reading it. Look for how many opinions he/she writes and how many stars. I distrust all high opinions in the first few months of publication, all high opinions by people who have only written a couple of opinions, and all high opinions from people who only write high opinions. Bottom Line: Distrust all high opinions except those from people who have established some evidence of independence by posting negative as well as positive opinions about other books. Thanks for the lack of honesty Tommy &/or Sitepoint &/or big A. I would have given 3 stars if there were not so many false ones posted here. (my opinion, 2 cma).]

Now, having finished Myer's book (except for most of the CMS stuff), I have changed it to 3 stars and concluded ....

There are about an equal number of pros and cons. It is somewhat light and easy to read, and the editing error rate is good. It is kind of a quick survey of subjects which Myer thinks are important. I did like chapters 7 & 9 (Manipulating XML with PHP, & XML and Web Services).

On the con side: The Appendix listing of PHP functions / methods is not complete and no examples are given. Where he discusses ways to extract XML from a database, two different sources (tables) are used, so the results are not comparable. I wish he had spent more ink on handling XML with PHP and less on client side technologies which are not well supported yet. I found the example listings a little short and lacking some additional code which would have helped follow what was supposed to happen. More output/results listings would also have helped.

The book is not particularly complete, and could not be used as a reference, but it may be ok (not great) as an overview or introduction. A better intro book may be `Beginning XML, 3rd Edition' by David Hunter etc., although that is a much bigger book.

Lastly, do not trust any high star rating review unless the source has proven his/her impartiality by posting positive as well as not so positive reviews of other books. Too many opinions of this book do not pass that simple test. The basic problem is determining who to believe and which postings to suspect are covertly trying to sell books because they have a vested interest or undisclosed motive.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the PHP in the title fool you........2006-01-01

This is a book about XML, all the power and flexability that the language gives you. It just happends to use PHP for the database access. Which means that no matter what language you use, this is a must have reference guide.

Thomas Myer has managed to put into writing one of the very best XML primers out there. It starts so gently, dealing with the familiar (HTML), and steps you through some basic examples. By the end of chapter 2 you are doing transforms. Before you close out Chapter 6 you will have worked with XPath Queries. These are no small concepts, but I never felt overwhelmed or lost. Mainly due to the precise and comprehensive writing, but the familiar examples (for web developers they are very familiar) helped keep me on some familiar ground.

If you are using XML over the web (in any language), I urge you to pick this one up. It wil be time very well spent.

5 out of 5 stars A PRACTICAL AND NO NONSENCE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR SURE!.......2005-11-09

Do you want to teach yourself XML the easy way? Well, you're in luck! Author Thomas Myer, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that introduces readers to a large part of the XML world, and to walk them, step by step, through the creation of an XML-powered Website.

Myer begins by introducing XML. Next, the author introduces you to the XML family, namely XHTML, XML Namespaces, and Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT). Then, he covers DTDs for consistency. The author continues by talking about XSLT and how to use it to transform XML for display in a browser. In addition, the author next covers XSLT in detail. He also shows you how to manipulate XML with client-side tools. Next, the author tackles the server side, specifically addressing the question of PHP 5 as he explores the differences between SAX, DOM, and SimpleXML function libraries for working with XML. Then, he delves into the specifics of the different varieties of RSS that are available, and discusses news aggregators, the parsing of feeds with PHP, and more. The author continues by looking at XML and Web Services. Finally, he considers XML and databases.

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of presenting the fascinating topic of XML. So, with any luck, XML will serve you well for some time to come!
