Book Description
A photography how-to guide showing how ordinary kids, using ordinary film in an ordinary camera, can take truly extraordinary photographs. Attached to the book is a genuine, re-loadable 35 mm camera (not the disposable kind). It's the ideal tool for taking America's funniest home snapshots.

tricky pix lots of fun.......2007-01-15
This book was a huge hit with a 4, 8, 9, & 10 year old this Christmas. Each of the kids rec'd digital cameras and the 9 year old this book. They played around with the different "poses" for hours Xmas morning and for days after. My daughter is the book owner and has been taking pictures with her friends too. I can't comment on the camera because we never used it - but I would suggest a digital camera so they can review the great shots instantly.
not *that* clever.......2004-06-05
This was disappointing, compared to most Klutz books. It did not grab the attention of my budding-photographer eleven-year-old. The camera included was no better than a disposable one.
Tricky Pix.......2001-12-31
The ideas are outstanding. Actually getting the pictures to come out that way take some work which was a great challenge for my son and I.
Book Description
I want to thank you for helping me to exceed my goal.
As you can see, your endless talk and chatter only served as fuel for my fire.
And judging from the score, you just got burned. This major debut from a talented young writer and photographer is a righteously entertaining medley of quick stories, poems, jokes, and prose meditations focusing on The Game as played by high school and college hopefuls, street warriors, and the pros they all admire. Gritty duotone photographs of street courts and young urban players provide the perfect venue for the bold design of the text as it hums and weaves across the spreads. Inspired by his love of African-American rhythms in writing and jazz, Charles Smith has created a paean to his favorite game that will drive readers' imaginations from the page to the courts and back again.
Customer Reviews:
a bit obnoxious.......2006-05-25
This book is often rude and self-indulgent. I don't want my kids reading about humiliating opponenents, especially when the grammar is bad: "Victory for the team and I; humiliation for you." I don't care for the self-congratulatory tone: "I remember challenging the star of the freshman team and beating him in one-on-one." And the list of street court "excuses" seems lazy when half involve something wrong with the player's shoes. My wife hates this book.
But my basketball-obsessed 20 month old likes the pictures (and he's too young to pick up on the obnoxiousness). Thankfully, my four year old isn't interested.
"Rimshots" Rocks!.......2003-01-08
When I read "Rimshots" I loved the beat of the poems. Being quite involved with basketball (I'm on 3 teams), I thought the book was really cool. I am also an aspiring photographer. So when I read about the author I was amazed that Mr. Smith was able to combine a love for basketball as well as a love for photography. I think he's become my role modle now . He's awesome and all of his books are awesome. "Rimshots" Rocks!
Awesome!.......2000-03-11
Rimshots captures the feel of the NYC street game with its expressive photos and poetic commentary. Can't wait to see what the author has coming out next! Must buy for all the children and basketball fans in your life.
Must read for all hoop fans!.......1999-12-08
Rimshots is creative and witty with amazing photos. Any basketball fan will love this book!
basketball players can be authors.......1999-11-02
I just finished charles r.smith jr's book rimshots. It was a great book. it was about the authors life of basketball, and he makes it into poems that deal with different basketball situations. The reason this book was so great is because it was about basketball but in poem form. No other book that I have ever read has used basketball as content for a poem.

A clever book.......2003-05-15
I teach kindergarten, and this book caught my students' attention. The illustrations are clean and modern, and the text is amusing. The granny goes out of her what to make sure that the child has all of necessities for sleeping. It is hilarious in a dry way- an introduction to that type of humor.
Book Description
In addition to their entertainment value, comic books offered a unique world-view to a large segment of the American public in the confusing decade following World War II. Millions were distributed to service personnel during the war years, and by 1945, adults as well as children were reading an astounding 60 million comic books per month. These books treated such contemporary concerns as the atomic and hydrogen bombs, growth of international Communism, and the Korean War, and they offered heroes and heroines to deal with such problems. In response to moral criticism, the industry established a Comics Code that specified acceptable content. The code prohibited most of what had appeared in the medium prior to 1954, thus ending what has since come to be known as the "golden age" of comic books. With reproductions of five representative stories supplementing the text, William Savage's book (first published in 1990), will appeal to social historians and others interested in this vivid expression of American culture.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Look at American Through Comics.......2001-10-22
William W. Savage, Jr. had led the way in this brief volume, colourfully titled Commies, Cowboys and Jungle Queens (original title Comic Books and America, 1945 - 1954). The author was among the first the look at the content of the comic books, read and passed around by millions of children and teenagers and not just a few adults, in terms of their comments on the culture which they reflected, such as the wonderful look at the Korean conflict as reflected in the comics. This book led to the brilliant and highly recommended Comic Book Nation by Bradford W. Wright and for that it should be thanked. This particular volume by William Savage is well-written, insightful, and often very funny. Its main drawback is its brevity and lack of more comic panels for illustrative purposes. All that aside, this is an enjoyable read.

Info on Savage's book.......2005-03-22
Antiwar literature entry: Index entry (p. 53)
[...]
But the war comics of the 1950s were different from the fantasy-driven titles published during World War II. They were darker, more realistic, and less jingoistic. "One thing to keep in mind is that from the end of World War II to the early 1950s, comic books were just as much an adult medium as a children's medium," explains Benton. "Many of the readers were young males in their 20s who missed World War II but had a desire ... to see war portrayed in a realistic fashion. Comic books allowed them to do that."
A few titles of the early 1950s, particularly those published by Timely Comics (later known as Marvel Comics), trumpeted the glory of war. But for the most part, publishers emphasized the negative consequences of global conflict, particularly in terms of human loss.
"There was a certain naïveté to the superhero stories published during World War II, and that changed abruptly in the 1950s," says William Savage Jr., a professor of history at the University of Oklahoma at Norman and author of Comic Books and America: 1945-1954 (University of Oklahoma Press, 1990).
"The only explanation I can come up with is that enough people ... in the comic book industry had participated in World War II and emerged from it with firsthand knowledge of what war was really like," says Savage. "It was a 180-degree turn from the gung-ho optimism of the World War II period to an almost totally pessimistic view of the individual in a combat situation. In my opinion, the war comics published during the Korean War were really the only antiwar literature of the day."

Book Description
Improve your chess skills and outwit your chess computer, with this step-by-step introduction to the guiding principles of computer chess play. The secrets you find here are the same ones built into toughest computer chess programs in the world, like IBM's "Deeper Blue." Your biggest asset is the element of surprise--something you can bring to your game that leaves a computer clueless. (These tips work for beating people as well, and you'll get the specifics on how to find--and beat--opponents for face-to-face, through-the-mail, and over-the-modem play, across the street and around the world.) Master tricks like "the rule of the square," which will bewilder opponents who don't know it--especially computers. Increase your ability to plan, understand a goal, keep it in focus, and visualize the steps to get you there. That's how to exploit any computer's biggest weakness, the "horizon effect," its inability to look far enough ahead to see what you're up to. With each move clearly pictured, you go move by move through a basic game, learning openings that put your computer opponent off-balance right from the start. Then it's on to middlegame strategy and tactics, and to endgames no computer can see coming. There's even an exclusive interview with "Database Man," Don Maddox, designer of the Deep Blue program, who reveals its hidden weaknesses. Soon you'll be defeating your opponents, human and otherwise, more soundly than you ever dreamed possible. Sterling 128 pages, 120 b/w illus., 6 x 9.

A Fine Basic Introduction -.......2002-08-09
to the Game of Chess. Suggests and offers examples, to practice on your computer, of basic mates and elementary endgames. The book is written in a friendly style that is unlikely to intimidate one new to Chess. As such the book is suitable for individuals with no prior knowledge of the game and particularly appropriate when included with the gift of a chess computer (or chess software) to such an individual.
Unfortunately I was disappointed. I was looking for something that built on and expanded Julio Kaplan's "How to Get the Most from Your Chess Computer" RHM Press 1980. For a (more) rigorous examination of how computers play chess and advanced methods of employing the computer to improve your game I highly recommend Kaplan's work.
To read this book is to win both computer and human.......2001-01-11
This book is good for beginners and intermediate players. It doesn't give you 101 chess opening but it can lead you to more than 101 opening. The author summarizes opening ideas and clarifies middle-game stretegies. It might be better if you buy this book accompanied with a good chess-opening book, then read opening tactics and compare to this book.

Better quality and quicker delivery than expected!.......2007-05-07
Ordered 4 books - two new; two used. All of them seem perfectly unused and the order arrived sooner than promised.
Pretty good.......2007-03-08
I'm taking Cisco Communication class at school, and we had to buy this book. So I didn't have any choice :) But the book is ok, although there are some typos and stupid questions sometimes. However, everything is well exaplained.
Good Book, Gives you good practice.......2005-12-24
I am A CCNA Instructor & have used this book extensively.
There are errors but the errata is published on the ciscopress web site. Besides this, this is an excellent reference for somebody wanting to get hands on experience on cisco equipment.
For anybody studying for the CCNA exam, I highly recommend this book, along with CCNA Intro & ICND by Wendell Odom.
Typos galore.......2004-05-01
This book has excessive typographical errors, causing students to make mistakes in the Cisco lab, and ultimately making the learning experience much more difficult.
Some chapters, such as Chapter 3 (OSPF) use different IP addressing schemes in each lab, causing students to waste time reconfiguring the routers repeatly and reducing the amount of time available to spend on the more important lab portions that are specific to OSPF.
Don't use this book unless you have no alternative lab manuals.
Did anyone at Cisco Press try to complete these labs before publishing this book?
