Book Description

The maxim in the music industry has always been "You can't make it on talent alone," and with This Business of Music Marketing & Promotion, you don't have to. In language that is simple and direct, author Tad Lathrop details promotional skills, publicity plans, royalty guidelines, and more, all supported by real-world examples. He shows how the Web and other technological developments have revolutionized not only how music is made, but how it is marketed and promoted. The old rules still apply--create a marketing plan, know your audience, be familiar with the laws of commerce--but there are a host of new ones as well, along with new strategies on how to give your recording the exposure it deserves. This streamlined, reorganized, and updated edition features an all-new chapter ("Twenty Profile-Building Ideas to Use Right Now"), which will help readers get a running start in the recording business. They'll also find completely updated material about Internet sales and promotion techniques, the latest information available on integrated marketing and e-marketing strategies, and brand-new listings of information resources.

4 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!!!.......2007-01-17

RGEAT BOOK!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars I was less than satisfied.......2006-12-01

The book wasn't bad. It just didn't seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I'm just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that's the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.

There's some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn't already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman's book over this one - a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-05-20

A very incisive title that bites right into the flesh of the problem. All the problems that matter are discussed here in this book and no stone is left unturned. Vivid examples and real life situations are used as cased studies and as examples on which fictional problems are projected and solved. This innovative way of detailing a complicated and cruel world has to be widely appreciated, along with the easy structure and understandable language. An overall excellent book with little or now flaws, a book that should be read by all that want to have anything to do with music promoting and marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-19

There aren't a lot of eye openers when it comes to music business but this title is a revolution compared to titles of the same caliber. This book is one of those that make you stop and rethink what you've been thinking about a certain area of expertise, it really opens up some hidden pathways and certain secrets of the trade that have been hidden from outside view. Easy structure and good presentation draw the eye of the perspective buyer couple with some interesting testimonies from real life experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read........2006-05-16

Even if you're a veteran in the industry, I highly suggest reading this book. Theres something to be learned for anyone who reads it. I bought it in hopes that it would cover the business of internet marketing, but it didn't do that as well as I would have hoped. Despite this fact, it is still a great book. Book Description

In 'Acting Naturally' Lynn Voskuil argues that Victorian Britons saw themselves as "authentically performative," a paradoxical belief that focused their sense of vocation as individuals, as a public, and as a nation. Rather than confirming the customary view of Victorian England as fundamentally antitheatrical, Voskuil shows instead how the Victorians' fabled commitment to the culture of sincerity was often authorized, rather than invariably threatened, by their equally powerful fascination with acting and performance. She explores a diverse range of materials: plays, novels, drama and theater criticism, newspaper reviews and columns, theatrical memoirs, private diaries and letters, cartoons, political pamphlets, and satires. Throughout, Voskuil charts the mid-Victorian heyday of these beliefs and their late-Victorian transformations in a variety of cultural practices and controversies, among them the conduct of audiences at sensation theater in the 1860s, political debates over the Eastern Question in the 1870s, and the cult of personality that shaped the popularity of stage actors Henry Irving and Ellen Terry in the late 1880s.

By demonstrating that Britons were perceived or enjoined to "act naturally" in such cases, this pathbreaking book not only offers an innovative interpretation of Victorian culture but also challenges what has become a theoretical commonplace: the unreflective use of postmodern theatricality to explain earlier cultures and literatures. Precisely by analyzing central issues in the historical context of the nineteenth century, 'Acting Naturally' reconceives widely used theoretical models that have influenced literary, performance, and cultural studies more broadly in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

            Product Description

In early 3061, Prince Victor Steiner-Davion returned from the Clan homeworlds triumphant -- but to an Inner Sphere that was radically different. The entire Ghost Bear population had relocated to the Inner Sphere; the St. Ives Compact was under siege; Katrina Steiner-Davion was sitting on the throne of New Avalon. Even with the overwhelming threat of the Clan invasion defeated, the Inner Sphere is still poised precariously between peace and war. Who will light the spark that will set BattleMechs® marching and worlds aflame once more? Drawing on information from five scenario packs, seven sourcebooks and more than a dozen novels, Shattered Sphere represents the ultimate guide to the people and places of BattleTech, as seen through the eyes of the characters who live there. Offering a brief, comprehensive history of the universe and an in-depth look at events from the Truce of Tukayyid through early 3062, this update is a must for any BattleTech fan. Shattered Sphere also includes detailed maps showing the current state of the Inner Sphere and the Clans.

4 out of 5 stars Good timeline update sourcebook for BT.......2003-07-05

Following his victory over the Clans in the Twilight of the Clans novel series, Victor Steiner-Davion returned home expecting to be hailed triumphant. Instead he found himself as a man without a country, as his throne had been usurped by his murderous, devious sister Katherine. Though throne-less, Victor salvages some power by being appointed Precentor Martial of Comstar and Commander of the Star League military. This sourcebook is presented as a briefing from Victor's top intel agent as an update on the present doings among the Inner Sphere realms, the Periphery, and the Clans. Including a nice military review of the Lyran and Davion halves of the former FedCom over which Victor had ruled, including unit loyalties and deployments, this book gives a good feeling of the major powers for each other as well as their internal assessments.

This is a nicely presented sourcebook that allows a good continuation of a Battletech campaign in this time of turmoil before the FedCom civil war (when Katherine finally got hers) and the Word of Blake Jihad (though the WoB has already recaptured Terra and begun their buildup). There are many hints dropped of things that came later, proving the well-developed course of events that FASA had planned. For collectors and players alike, this book serves as a good game aid.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2002-12-08

To many the BattleTech world is some useless back story to a universe of killer robots. Think again. This volume along with dozens of others offers a rich sci-fi universe rivaling that of Star Trek in complexity. Politics, combat, game scenarios and technology are dished out by the ton in this universe. This reference provides valuable information on the novel storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of info for new and old BattleTech fans!.......2001-02-12

Having followed the BattleTech universe on and off for many years, I was pleasantly surprised to find this well-written supplement. I was a bit behind the times but Shattered Sphere did a brilliant job of filling me in. The rebirth of the Star League, the destruction of Clan Smoke Jaguar, Task Force Serpent and Bulldog, the end of the Clan invasion, Sun-Tzu Liao's using SLDF peacekeepers to help him absorb the St. Ives Compact, and the Fall of Terra to the Word of Blake are just a few storylines touched on within these pages. Maps, character bios, and mission briefings all help to make the reader think they are reading a real secret report about the status of the Inner Sphere. Thanks to this book I am once again collecting BattleTech novels and sourcebooks.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2000-09-06

This book clearly explains the current situation in the Inner Sphere. Each of the Great Houses, Clans, and ComStar is given a good once-over that explains role and recent history. Although it could give a bit more information and the art is a bit so-so, it is a great resource for both new players and grizzled veterans.

5 out of 5 stars Extra Extra read all about it........2000-08-07

I have been reading most of the newer novels that have been coming out about the inner sphere's attack on the clans. I had gotten this book before I got to the novels. It's not as dramatic as the novels, but it is an excellent sorce to sum up the history that occured in them.

For the seasoned vets, who have played since 3025 or 3050 before all of the new advances, its a great way to catch up on what's going on. And if your new to the game, it gives a good starting point if you are ever interested in following any further.

            5 out of 5 stars A must-have, but where's the rest?.......2002-05-09

This book is awesome in its scope taking place pretty far in humanities future. It's the second book in the series. In the first book, a gravitational control experiment on Pluto wakes up alien machinery which steals the Earth through an artificial black hole and begins dismantling the other planets for its own purposes. It's humanties first glimpse of FTL travel, and follows the desperate struggle of those left behind to survive and halt the aliens progress towards transforming the solar system, all the while trying to duplicate the feat.

This book picks up with the efforts of the humans left behind to find and retrieve the Earth from the alien menace. It also follows the struggle of the people of Earth who find themselves in an entirely new system, with hundreds of stars and planets and ravenous alien life form/machines bent on exploiting all life and resources of the Earth. Not to mention the mysterious "enemy" that consumes all life, that has located Earths new home.

The book ends just as things start to get REALLY good, and there has yet to be another book to finish off this story, and it's been quite a while now. So - Where's the Rest? If you don't buy it, put the series on your "watch" list and when the next one comes out - get them all!

4 out of 5 stars Shattered Series as well.......2002-04-29

Second in the series but (I must admit at the begining) surely not planned as last in the story. Earth "stolen" to alien Multisystem after gravitic experiment has triggered on wheel-like superstrucure burried deep into Moon. In the second book we can watch Earth, NaPurHab (crazy Naked Purpure Habitat) and Terra Nova ship in Multisystem strugging to survive among COREs and SCOREs - alien objects smashing nearly anything what get into their path or into collision course with any planet they guarding.
This book is one of the true hard SF with all hi-tech stuff and of course some future-stuff tech. You can find here some psychological background of main characters also, but there is also bad side. The plot is moving to slowly from the beginning and reader have to wait nearly till the end of the book for some real action. Everything before is only "getting data, sorting data, making some kind of hypothesis etc..." ocassionaly inset by short flashes about Charonians Heritage Memory or Adversary thinking.
The end is not "The End" the way we would expecting it. It seems to me as small stop before next volume which should be great conclusion of this story. May be establishing something like relationship between humans and Charonians like it is stated on last two pages of Shattered Sphere book.
Calculated together - very good book for those who like SF, but you have to expect, that there is no strong end. I hope there will be third book soon and I will be able to get one copy to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Buyer beware (But still buy it ;).......2002-03-15

This book, like its predecessor, is some of the best science fiction that I've ever had the privelege to read.

Unfortunately, the author leaves the reader hanging, waiting for a sequel to tie up all sorts of loose ends (intentionally, no doubt). The author has not, however, published the third book in the series.

It's been a 10 year wait so far. Only buy this book if you are willing to subject yourself to the heartache of needing to look for new Anderson every time you walk into a bookstore, but find nothing other than continuation of lesser men's work (Asimov, Lucas, etc).

            5 out of 5 stars A very good sci-fi book.......2001-04-07

This series (The Hunted Earth) is amazing!

Without giving out too much spoilers, the novel takes place in the year 2400+, the Earth is stolen from the Solar System, and the Hunted Earth series (The Ring of Charon, and the Shattered Sphere) covers the efforts and stories of the people left in the Solar System (on the Moon, Mars, Pluto, etc.) and the people of Earth.

I think one of the unique things about this book is that the novel jumps from one person's story to another. The perspective isn't just from one main character, but many. Roger Allen MacBride-Allen does a great job of introducing these characters, showing their challenges, and then very convincingly details how these people rise to solve them.

Specifically, the "Shattered Sphere" concentrates on the aftermath of Earth's Abduction, and the ensuing struggle of the people of Earth and the remaining people of the Solar System to get back at the alien abductors.

The book has a great story development, and it's one that I've re-read a couple of times.

I sincerely hope that Roger MacBride Allen makes a sequel to the "Shattered Sphere".

            5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss this!.......1999-04-19

This is the sequel to The Ring of Charon, and excellent science fiction. Though The Ring of Charon had some of the most horrendus cover art I've ever seen, it was an excellent book, with good characterization (though I wish he'd concentrate more on one character). The Shattered Sphere is great, and I can't wait to read the next in the series.

5 out of 5 stars The State of the Art as it Exists Today.......2006-03-31

Computer gaming continues to grow at a very rapid rate. In fact much of the development of the new higher speed chips and of course the high performance video cards are being driven by the needs of the gaming people.

Computer gaming software also continues to grow, perhaps even faster than gaming itself. Because of the rapid state of software development, no one author could possibly keep up with all of the changes that are taking place.

So in this book Steve Rabin, of Nintendo of America has gotten almost sixty of the most advanced gaming software developers to write articles explaining the state of the art as they are helping to develop it. The writers come from a mix of software companies, universities, independent consultants, and game hardware developers. This is the state of the art in the development of artificial intelligence for games.
