Customer Reviews:
Revolutionizing The Home Recording Industry, One Studio At A Time!.......2007-09-19
Just when I thought I knew it all about voice-overs, my agent and producers started asking me to audition at home. Honestly, I was overwhelmed by the thought of it all. And thought that maybe this was the technological chasm, the great divide, that would separate the wheat from the chaff....and not related to voice-over abilibity.
And then I found Harlan Hogan's and Jeffrey P. Fisher's book on Home Recording. To say it has saved my derriere is putting it mildly. Harlan and Jeffrey take you through step-by-step on what affordable equipment to buy, how to set up your home studio and how to properly record and edit yourself. They even toss in chapters on ISDN and phone patch, as well as self-promoting your home studio.
A "home run" if you ask me...and you did!
A MUST HAVE!.......2007-09-05
I put a recording studio in my home in 2006 in order to build my voice over business. I must admit, I'm not sure why I didn't buy this book sooner!! This book is a MUST for anyone who is even REMOTELY considering building their own studio.
In the process of building my home studio, I came to one conclusion: there's a reason there are audio engineers... because they understand all of this equipment, and I didn't have a clue what all the knobs and sliders meant. What little I did comprehend when building my studio has now been further explained to me in this book... NOW I KNOW!!!
The text is written so that it's easy to understand. And, it's apparent, without even knowing them, that Harlan and Jeffrey included their personalities in the book. You can just tell by reading, these are guys with a great sense of humor... which is so refreshing when you're reading about things you may not necessarily understand at the onset.
Good Overview.......2007-08-31
This book provides a good overview of the process and the equipment needed. it covers some of the technical aspects well in broad strokes with enough information to point in the directions for further study if required but is sufficient in the depth of information to be up and running quickly.
The subject is huge. There are the technical aspects of the technology, which is changing monthly, and any publication will be out of date by the time it is printed, however, the underlying processes are unchanged.
I recommend it as a good reference for anyone interested in Podcasting or Voice Overs.
Hands down the BEST hands on book on subject!.......2007-08-09
From assembling your home studio (mic, pc and software) to tips on HOW to make yourself sound better, etc., this is an EXCELLENT, easy to read primer.
an invaluable resource .......2007-07-09
I have read this book cover to cover and keep comming back to it. What a Wonderful Resourse for any Voice Actor!!!! Thanks Harlan and Jeffrey for the hard work you guys put into this book! Not only is if full of good info it is easy to understand for the non-tech people out there.
Book Description
For many years, recording voiceovers was the exclusive domain of commercial studios. Even a simple voice audition meant a trip to a studio, an ad agency, or an agent's office. Today voiceover actors are increasingly producing voice tracks for corporate narration, radio spots, animation, games, and other dialogue projects from their own home studios. Many have learned that to survive in this highly competitive field, they need to learn and master basic home recording production techniques. The Voice Actor's Guide to Recording at Home and On the Road, Second Edition shows both aspiring and established voiceover actors how to set up and effectively use their own inexpensive-but professional-sounding-personal recording studio to make professional-quality home recordings quickly and easily. Everything is covered to help you get auditions and jobs, from setting up your studio with the right hardware and software, recording at home, and production basics, to promotion, podcasting, and advanced production. This new edition of this bestselling bible for voiceover home recording has been completely updated to cover all the exciting new technology and delivery options currently available.

Book Description
This book sets out to show that modern-day fears about the supposed moral threat posed to the young by violent movies or interactive computer games have their roots in nineteenth-century anxieties about the ill effects of popular forms of amusement on the "children of the lower classes." These concerns stretch in an almost unbroken line through successive "moral panics" in both Britain and America, as throughout history there have been attempts to shift the blame for social breakdown onto the entertainment forms of the age: penny theatres, "penny dreadfuls," dime novels, gangster films, horror comics. All these are discussed, evaluated, and placed in context. A postscript refers to "video nasties," violence on television, "gangsta rap," and computer games, each in turn playing the role of "folk devils" which must be causing delinquency. The book argues that since "moral panics" over popular culture are perennial, this tells us a great deal more about adult anxieties--fear of the future, technological change, and the erosion of moral absolutes--than about the nature of juvenile misbehavior.

He who forgets history is doomed to repeat it..........2004-03-15
This entertaining and carefully researched book reveals the uncanny and depressing parallels between historical panics over gangster movies and horror comic books, and today's political grandstanding over violent TV and video games.
Book Description
In the mid-1970s, Ian Andersen wrote Turning the Tables on Las Vegas, the classic book on casino comportment. As the first book to broach the all-important consideration of how to get away with getting the money, Turning was the book that launched a thousand blackjack careers. After its publication, however, Andersen disappeared from the scene. Where did he go? The answer is spelled out in this long-awaited sequel, Burning the Tables in Las Vegas--Keys to Success in Blackjack and in Life.
Since 1976, Andersen has been perfecting his personal program for success in blackjack, poker, and other of life's games. His technique combines elements of mathematics, psychology, and mental and physical well-being to create a never-before-disclosed approach to winning.
Burning the Tables in Las Vegas addresses virtually every aspect of blackjack advantage play: game selection, longevity, tipping, employee relations, guises, disguises, false identification, credit, comps, risk, heat, dress, demeanor, and diet. Andersen also explains how emotions, such as guilt and anger, and skills, such as discipline and interpersonal competence, can affect your prospects for profit.
Peppered with fascinating anecdotes and stories from Andersen's forays into the great casinos of the world, Burning the Tables in Las Vegas takes you on a vicarious journey into the rarefied realm of the high-stakes blackjack pro--and shows you what it takes to be one.
Customer Reviews:
ONE GREAT BOOK.......2006-04-01
HE'S A GREAT PLAYER AND A GREAT WRITER! HE'S TRULY A WORLD CLASS PLAYER. A GREAT BOOK TO READ AND TO OWN!
Should You Buy the Second Edition?.......2003-12-20
What's new in this second edition of Burning the Tables in Las Vegas? Mostly Chapter 9 on Green Chip Play. If you have a copy already, it's probably not worth it to buy the new edition, but you might want to borrow a copy to read this short new chapter on low-roller betting. In a nutshell, Andersen tells you how to win with $25-$50 bets, but don't expect to make a living at it.
Andersen spends about half the book talking about the mechanics of blackjack, and only the first few pages cover the basics. The rest is strategy and tactics, and he brings Stanford Wong along to add his expertise. The other half of the book covers topics that are not specific to blackjack, but are just as important: history, psychology, money management, risk management, health, demeanor. It is difficult to say exactly how much of a professional gambler's success is due to playing well and how much is due to people skills, being alert, reading a room, and staying healthy.
This is an up-to-date book that takes into account the way casinos operate today, not twenty years ago. Andersen adds a lot of what should be common sense to the nuts and bolts of playing winning blackjack. You probably don't need someone to tell you not to piss off the dealer (or even shoot them a disgusted look when you're losing), but it doesn't hurt to be reminded. Especially by a proven winner.
Ian Andersen is the best!.......2002-09-17
There are simply no other players quite as experienced as Ian Andersen. Even if you are not interested in counting cards, his experiences make for great stories and wonderful anecdotes. If you are serious about card-counting, then this book will pay for itself with the Ultimate Gambit. This book is perfect for your first trip to a casino as well as the experienced card-counter.
High-roller fact and fantasy.......2002-09-13
Ian Andersen is an entertaining writer as well as a longtime high-stakes professional blackjack player. With his latest offering, "Burning the Tables in Las Vegas," Andersen has attempted to update his classic from the '70s, "Turning the Tables on Las Vegas," and make it relevant to today's game. The results are mixed. "Burning" is a good read for sure, with many fascinating vignettes about life in the high-roller fast lane, as well as quite a bit of useful information for pros on how to survive and prosper in an age of high-tech casino surveillance. But, all that aside, it still left me wanting. Andersen may write about blackjack with the entertaining talent of, say, a Bryce Carlson, but he lacks the solid mathematical knowledge of a Carlson, or a Wong, or a Schlesinger to back it up. For example, with his so-called "Ultimate Gambit," he is all too happy in the name of camouflage to reduce his edge to not much more than half a percent, and then throw even more ev out the window with fairly large bets at craps and other negative-expectation games. His whole approach smacks of a certain lack of appreciation for the harsh realities of variance and standard deviation. Don't get me wrong, "Burning" is a very good book, and I think serious bj players will find it enjoyable and useful, but in the real world of professional play--high stakes or otherwise--it laces in a little too much fantasy with the facts to rate five stars.
Excellent book for the aspiring counter.......2002-05-29
I am new to card counting and after reading this book - I feel like I have a whole new perspective on playing blackjack as a business. There is so much good information here. I would recommend this book a a must-read for anyone interested in counting as a business or just for fun!!

Well Done.......2006-03-19
This is an extremely well-written campaign, filled with tons of optional encounters. I was very impressed with the number of options many parts of this campaign had, taking the pressure off of the person running the setting. Highly recommended for a Dragonlance gamemaster without a lot of spare time to come up with homebrewed ideas.
Not a problem.......2006-02-24
Did not have a single problem with this item. Came well packed and wrapped. No complaints.

Book Description
Transformation cards, or decks of playing cards in which conventional suit signs were transformed into fanciful designs, originated in 18th century Europe. The Key to the Kingdom recreates this clever conceit with awe-inspiring flair and inventiveness. Our extraordinary book-plus, first published in 1992 (more than 70,000 copies sold) comprises a deck of richly illustrated transformation cards designed by award-winning artist and illustrator Tony Meeuwissen, plus an accompanying book of corresponding verses. Now the deluxe edition features an even more stunning package with new slipcase and book cover design. Both the book and the fabulously illustrated deck of cards draw on traditional nursery rhymes and riddles for inspiration. Meuwissen's luminous artwork is rich in visual and literary puns which tease the brain and delight the eye. This is truly a one-of-a-kind masterwork from a brilliant artist with an incredible imagination.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2005-10-02
I bought this around the holidays in 1992, and it kicked off my interest in card collecting. This is a work of art, and of all the art I own, this is my favorite. Ostensibly, it's a transformation deck of cards with an accompanying book, but it's also a series of beautifully executed paintings (the ace of spades is a spider, the 3 of diamonds is the Titanic sinking, the 4 of spades is a yellow jacket), each with an accompanying verse. Hidden inside all of the verse, however, is a puzzle to solve. This is so clever on so many levels, it's amazing. If you enjoy intellectual stimulation in your art, track this down. It's a shame it's out of print.
One of the most witty, beautiful decks you will ever see!.......1998-11-02
I highly recommend this deck to anyone who collects cards. It lives up to it's name and more! Tony Meeuwissen has very cleverly used the suits to create wonderful illustrations of traditional rhymes and verses on every card. (It's not tecnically a transformation deck, but once you've seen it, you won't care) No written review can possibly do it justice, it really has to be seen to be appreciated. Well worth hunting down an (unfortunatly) out-of-print copy!

a great book...dark with the overwhelming feeling of doom........2006-09-30
i can't believe no one ever reviewed this book i owned it years ago, in the 90's and from the moment i picked it up i could not put it down. RAR was hands down the best source book i ever read for werewolf (apocalypse)
the entire book made you feel as if amragedon was months away and that it was unavoidable.
it really made a lot of comparisons to how americans veiwed soviet russia during the cold war, with how the garou outside of russia veiwed those stuck (trapped)behind the iron shadow (nod to the iron curtain) it was by far the darkest themed book werewolf had,
and if you ever read the Silver Crown, this book gave an all new depth to the character Arkady, and what he had to do to escape Baba Yaga's reach.
i think the new forsakken series (or new WOD in general) could probally have something similar to this story arch, given the actions Vladimir Putin has taken to consolidate the kremlin's power (as of september 2006)
or better yet they could give a peak into the world of Kim Jong-il and the DPRK (north korea)

This is an excellent book for assisting in solving all types of crosswords. It is a must have. I have an old, rather sad looking copy of this (due to lots & lots of use!). I am looking for a hardcopy which I am hoping will last better (or a better condition soft copy).

Customer Reviews:
awesome.......2004-01-24
I have been reading this book for the last 30 minutes and it's one wow after another. I just turned to my dog and said "This book is amazing!" hehe.
Seriously. The dive in and "look what you can do with ps" style of this book is very impressive. I bought it as an alternative to the more advanced wow book. This is the one I was looking for. 4 thumbs up!
Even for the well-seasoned.......2002-03-22
I **LOVE** this book! I've been using Photoshop since version 4 and i'm self-taught. I am not an expert yet but then i don't consider myself a novice either.
This book is for everyone. What i most like about this book is the easy style and sample pages, The quick shortcuts to just about doing everything, and the explanation of why one tool works better than another.
I just attended a 2-day Photoshop class and the instructor highly recommended this book. at first, i thought that it was for the very beginner, but it's some much more. It's like a dictionary... you keep it for reference.
as i glanced at the instructor's book, i noticed that it was truly worn. she said that she's had to buy a second copy because she's used it so much. you can't possibly memorize everything about photoshop.. so why not have the best resource in town?? This BOOK!
Photoshop reference extraordinaire.......2002-01-31
I love this book! I wish all software books were written this well. If you took 20 Photoshop books at random and put them through some magic process that took all the good stuff out and condensed them into 1 easy to read, well-organized, no fluff, no 1500 pages and 4 pounds of paper book, this would be what comes out.
When I picked this book off them shelf and started reading it, it was immediately obvious that the layout and organization were very good. The more I've used the book, the more I appreciate what it has to offer. Simply, a superior reference to Photoshop 6! It's really a "textbook" example of how to present information in a logical and easy to use fashion.
I didn't find having the images in black and white a problem at all. In the context of this book, color images would not add much information at all, although I'm sure they would add a lot to the price.
A superb reference book, well-written and organized. The Adobe user guide and Classroom in a book are now relegated to the back of the bookshelf.
Please please please...software book writers, use this book as a model of how to create your future books. This book shows well that less is often more. People are not buying software books by the pound, they are really more interested in quality information, not quantity!!
I'd like to give this book 10 stars, but 5 will have to suffice.
Best Photoshop book, period.......2001-09-20
Photoshop is a deep and complex program and this book makes it (almost) simple. The book has several strengths -- first is McClelland's astonishing knowldge, next is his ability to explain complex things in terms even a beginner can understand, third is the brilliant way the information is organized. Face it, no matter how much knowlege a book contains, if you can't find the knowledge it's useless to you. The publisher and book designer make McClelland's information always easy to find, even if you are looking for some obscure feature like using the Color Range command to make a mask. No matter what your skill level, this book will open the Photoshop world further to you. I'm a graphics professional and I have a dozen Photoshop books on my shelf -- and this is the one I always pull out.
Look & Learn Photoshop 6 is Great........2001-01-25
you can start learning photoshop fast and easy. This book is suitable for beginners. It's full of illustrations and pictures, and to the point. In addition, you don't have to read a lot. it's a quick start. it's so informative and you can use it as manual too. even filters are covered, what are they and how you can use them step by step. good work Deke.
